Going to new heights in Burnaby Heights Janaya Fuller-Evans
staff reporter
Heights in the Heights could change now that Burnaby council has passed a motion to vary the number of storeys allowed for development in the area. Building heights along the Hastings Street corridor have been limited to four storeys and 52.5 feet, as part of the Hastings Street area plan, adopted by council in 1991. The new policy plan would allow for a fifth storey, a residential mezzanine floor, in the rear portion of new developments.
Animal control
Burnaby council passed a motion approving plans to extend the city’s current contract with the British Columbia Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for two more years. The proposed contract would be $520,383 for this year, but would be adjusted accordingly based on this year’sVancouverConsumer Price Index numbers, once those are in.

Court date set
Burnaby council has set a date for a Court of Revision, to hear appeals against local area services and sewer assessment rolls. Residents can appeal local area services and sewer parcel taxes that are being charged for the first time, according to a report from the department of engineering. The court is being held on Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. in council chambers.
Correction The NOW published some incorrect information in a Jan. 2 story on pipeline safety around schools. Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion wrote a letter to the Education Minister stating that there were evacuations during the 2009 Kinder Morgan tank farm spill. According to the Burnaby Fire Department, there were no evacuations for that spill. The NOW regrets the error.
