UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL

Clan lose close one at the buzzer Simon Fraser University dropped its first game in Great Northwest conference play following a 5957 loss at the buzzer to No. 11-ranked Western Washington University on Saturday. Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe picked up her ninth double-double of the season and 50th over her collegiate career, leading all Clan players with 14 points and 21 rebounds. Kristina Collins and Erin Chambers added 13 and 11 points, respectively, to the SFU scoreline. In a low scoring, defensively played first half, SFU took a 29-23 advantage into the dressing room at the half-time interval. But Western Washington opened the second half on a 12-5 run and held onto a slim lead until Chambers hit a three-pointer with less than seven minutes left to regain the lead for the visiting Clan. SFU kept the lead until the final minute, setting up a wild finish. Raincock-Ekunwe tied the score on a layup with just six seconds left on the

clock, but the home team took back the lead on a twopointer from Britt Harris as time expired. SFU’s conference record fell to 4-1 and 11-2 overall, following the loss.

Goal getter:

Burnaby Girls Elite Eva Custeau, in white, scored the gamewinning goal in a 2-0 under-14 Metro soccer victory against Richmond at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West last Sunday.

The game, which began last Thursday evening, was halted due to a power outage and postponed until the following afternoon. Elijah Matthews led the Clan with 19 points, while Anto Olah added 18 points and eight rebounds. Taylor Dunn chipped in with 16 points. The following night, SFU lost a closer 89-84 decision to Central Washington in conference play at home. Dunn led the Clan with 24 points. Olah and Matthews had 14 and 13 points, respectively. Dillon Hamilton also scored in double figures with 10 points. The losses dropped SFU’s overall record to 5-7.
