bbotsford Police are concerned after male strangers approached young girls on different occasions and tried to convince them to get inside their vehicles last week. Const. Ian MacDonald said there have been two disturbing incidents recently of drivers pulling up to young girls to offer rides. “[The drivers’ actions] are creepy and extremely concerning at the low end, and sinister and potentially criminal at the high end,” said MacDonald, adding the APD was taking the incidents very seriously. In the first instance, a 12-year-old girl was walking on McKenzie Road near Victory Boulevard on April 25 between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. when a man driving a newer model, dark SUV pulled up and asked if she wanted a lift. The girl ignored the man and continued on her way. The suspect is described as South Asian, 30 to 40 years of age, and clean-shaven with sunglasses. Four days later, on April 29, a 15year-old girl was walking home from work at 7 p.m. near Vinewood and Ware streets when she noticed a newer model, red van driving slowly beside her. A man repeatedly called out to her asking if she needed a ride and suggested that she get in the vehicle. The girl refused and the man drove away. The suspect is described as Asian, in his late 40s or early 50s, with dark hair and wrinkles, and wearing a dark-coloured jacket. see CREEPY, page A10

Child in stroller struck by truck

Man breaks leg trying to stop runaway car

Toddler unhurt, police search for driver

A 21-year-old Abbotsford man has a fractured leg after attempting to stop his runaway car on Monday night. The driver parked his Toyota Celica in a steep driveway at a home along Wagner Drive around 10:30 p.m. when it began to roll backwards down the slope, said Const. MacDonald. The young man attempted to stop the vehicle from behind without success, said MacDonald. The car careened down the driveway into another parked car and pole, breaking the driver’s leg in the process. “The good news is that he wasn’t more seriously injured,” said MacDonald.

STUCK SUMAS SEMI – JEAN KONDA-WITTE/TIMES

The Sumas Way on-ramp to Highway 1 westbound was blocked for most of Tuesday by a semi-truck that overturned in the curve midmorning. RCMP investigators and tow trucks arrived on scene early but the truck remained toppled on its side, blocking the lane, well into the evening rush hour. Drivers looking to avoid traffic snarls in the area were forced to use the McCallum or Whatcom Road highway entrances.

Mission signing 20-year deal with RCMP, final cost unknown

Wage boost could change current bill of $9M CHRISTINA TOTH CToth@abbotsfordtimes.com

T

he District of Mission will sign a 20year deal with the province to continue RCMP policing services, but the final costs of an unexpected boost to officers’ wages may not be known for some time. The district, which brought in a “zero tax increase” budget for 2012, pays just over $9 million a year for the police service, out of its operating budget of $59 million. Mission will be able to absorb some unexpected costs with a police budget reser ve fund and some cost-trimming measures undertaken in its tight 2012 budget. “We allowed for a small overall wage increase (in the 2012 budget),” said director of finance Ken Bjorgaard. As for the higher-than-expected wages, “I don’t know what or if that will impact the district,” he said. The RCMP and the federal government may still have to work out some disagreements over retroactive pay, he added. The feds negotiated the RCMP contract, but B.C. municipalities were not advised

about the details until the final deal, which could add millions of dollars to some communities’ budgets. The 62 RCMP-serviced districts in B.C. were prepared for a 1.5 per cent increase a year for police wages, but were caught off guard when the federal treasury board announced last month the RCMP will receive a salary bump of 5.25 per pent with benefits over the following years. The deal is for 1.75, 1.5 and 2 per cent increases over the next three years, plus benefit features such as shift premiums, increased service pay and other allowances, including a wellness day. Some of Mission’s policing costs are offset by $494,000 in traffic fine revenue that the district gets back from the federal government. Mayor Ted Adlem noted that if the deal doesn’t work for Mission there “is a twoyear opting out clause we can activate if we want to.” However, that’s not likely. But Adlem added, “the district will seriously look at having our own police force as opposed to RCMP. We’d be silly not to.” He noted the new deal should also give municipalities more say in determining RCMP services. – TWITTER: @ABBYTIMES

Three dog night unleashed

bbotsford city council is throwing a bone to dog lovers. On Monday night, council voted to allow owners to have three dogs per household. The city’s former bylaw allowed a maximum of two dogs per lot, which also applied to a whole rental apartment complex or a house with a secondary suite. City staff, which supported the change, noted animal control calls are generally the result of irresponsible dog owners and occur irrespective of the number of dogs kept. Animal control officers attended a total of 1,345 incidents last year, the majority for dogs at large and barking. A total of 8,500 dogs were

licensed in Abbotsford in 2011. One third of all the households with a licenced dog had two animals. However, staff suspects some households were already housing a third dog that couldn’t be licenced under the bylaws. Of 19 surrounding municipalities, 11, including Chilliwack and Mission, allow three dogs. Port Moody was the sole community to allow four dogs per household. It was suggested raising the number of allowable animals would provide more homes for unwanted dogs and increase licencing revenue. Data from a 2001 Ipsos Reid poll on pet ownership showed 50 per cent of respon-

dents believe people should be limited in the number of pets they own, according to a staff report. The poll also indicated Canadians consider animal companionship to be important, with 70 per cent believing they were beneficial to a kid’s development and 40 per cent believing they can be a good substitute for human companionship. People who have kennel licences, limited to agricultural areas, can still exceed the maximum and property owners can still impose dog limits. The new initiative was brought about after resident Diane Davies made an appeal to council. There are no restrictions on the number of cats an Abbotsford pet owner can have. The issue must go to public hearing before the new bylaw can be passed.

After a five-year-long engagement, Betsworth and her husbandto-be Gary Roth have been gifted flights south along with accommodations on the Vegas strip, a chapel and a ring all thanks to generous listeners tuned in to a Country 107.1 radio contest. On April 24, Betsworth was listening to morning show host Ian Slipp stage his Hot Seat contest for a pair of Abbotsford Heat tickets. FINANCIAL ADVICE

Get Out Your Bucket List, the Prospera Valley GranFondo is Coming to the Fraser Valley Olympic cycling team, there is a shorter 80 kilometre MedioFondo which offers the same great scenery and route as the longer ride with a few less hills. There is also a fun three kilometre FamilyFondo available and the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition will be offering a cycling safety workshop for FamilyFondo participants following the ride. With more than a few cycling enthusiasts among the ranks at Prospera Credit Union, it wasn’t difficult to get the Abbotsford-based financial institution onboard as the title sponsor and once they had a sponsor committed, it didn’t take long for the Canadian Velo Event Management Society to build up support within Fraser Valley communities and the surrounding areas. “It’s amazing to bring this phenomenal event to riders in Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest,” says Jeffrey HansenCarlson, President, Canadian Velo Event Management Society. “This would not be possible without support from our community partners and sponsors.” Half of the net proceeds from The 2012 Prospera Valley GranFondo will go towards supporting the event’s charity partner, Special Olympics BC. “This partnership is unique in so many ways and we are excited to present a GranFondo to the Fraser Valley,” says

Bruce Howell, President and CEO of Prospera Credit Union. “The opportunity for all of us at Prospera to work with such a dedicated group of individuals who have the goal of developing a top-notch community cycling experience in the Fraser Valley and a strong commitment for raising funds in support of Special Olympics BC is incredible.” “We are honoured to be selected as the charity partner of the Prospera Valley GranFondo,” said Special Olympics BC President and CEO Dan Howe. “This community event aligns perfectly with the core values of Special Olympics BC, celebrating inclusion, sport and healthy lifestyles. There are more than 3,900 Special Olympics BC athletes throughout the province, and this event will support the year-round sport programs through which they experience joy and friendship and improve their health and skills. We are also excited that our longtime law enforcement partners are supporting this event.” A group of enthusiast riders who will take part in the Prospera Valley GranFondo recently held an awe-inspiring fundraiser to build awareness for the summer event and encourage people of all skill levels to participate. For 24 hours straight, eight cyclists, including Prospera Credit Union’s Dave Bickell , kept their

wheels spinning on the patio of Wendel’s Bookstore and Café in Fort Langley in support of Special Olympics BC. “Riding in a fondo is one of those bucket list experiences,” said Dave Bickell , who is also leading road-training rides to help other Prospera Credit Union employees train for the GranFondo. “As much as I love the personal accomplishment, it’s even more amazing to see other people achieve it for the first time, especially those who never imagined that they could do something this big.” With only 1,500 spaces available for the event and considering the amazing success of GranFondos across North America, an early sell-out is expected. The Prospera Valley GranFondo will also require hundreds of volunteers to make the ride a success—from manning water stations, to setting up the start and finish lines or driving a pace car, there are numerous opportunities for volunteers to enjoy the excitement of the event and be on-the-ground where the action is for a unique perspective. To register or volunteer, visit www.ValleyGranFondo. com. Post ride festivities for the Prospera Valley GranFondo will include an authentic First Nation’s feast on the grounds of the Fort Langley National Historic Site.

This summer, the Fraser Valley, long known as the road cycling mecca of British Columbia is set to host what is sure to become one of Canada’s premier cycling events. The inaugural Prospera Valley GranFondo takes place on July 22, 2012 centered in the historic village of Fort Langley. For the uninitiated, a GranFondo is a mass participation individual and team cycling event with riders of all ages taking part. For some, it is an opportunity to challenge their physical endurance in a highly competitive race, while for others it is simply a chance to get out on their bike and enjoy a day of riding with friends and family. The Prospera Valley GranFondo offers something for everyone with three different ride options. For the hardcore cyclists, there is an amazing—some would even say epic—160 kilometre ride featuring quiet country roadways, scenic farmland, historic river valleys and a challenging mountain summit. The traffic-controlled route has been chosen specifically to provide participants with a traditional European GranFondo experience and is a fully supported, timed event that includes hundreds of volunteers, enthusiastic spectators and aid stations. For those who want a challenge but aren’t planning to try out for Canada’s

Nothing hot about a cold sore I

’m not sure what I’ll end up regretting when I’m on my death bed, but kissing Jeff Bennett in Grade 6 will likely rank in the top 10. It’s not that he was such a bad guy (as far as Grade 6 guys go) but he did have one tiny flaw. He had a cold sore. Alas, caught up in the peer pressure of a middle-school game that called for boy-girl pairs to disappear around a corner of the school and hook up for 10 seconds of closedmouth “ziplock” kissing, I went for it. My life since has been a cautionary tale for all who engage in such sexy, risk-taking behaviours. From the moment I emerged (not totally satisfied) from behind that school, orofacial herpes has been my lifelong companion. Lying dormant in my facial nerves, the virus waits only for weakness, stress and sunlight to bloom and instantly vaporize all forms of intimacy for at least a week. I feel the lip-tingle that signals another “episode” like a medieval Genoan might have felt the buboes under his arm signaling the Black Death. The outcome is just as inevitable: the soreness, the blistery-ness, the scabbiness—all

CORNELIA NAYLOR

Be our guest immortalized in my next yearbook picture or family Christmas photo. I don’t expect pity from those who steered clear of the virus in their wild middle-school years; I just don’t want Grade 6ers today to make the same mistake I did. Give in to peer pressure kids, and one day, you too might find yourself lurking with scabby lips near a group of people who were once your friends sharing an ice cream bar. You too could one day feel the transformation coming on like a werewolf squinting at a full moon rising and wake up a week later, dazed and starved for human contact. And don’t think just because we’ve sent a man to the moon and invented smart phones that someone out there has come up with a cure or even a decent way to cover up your lesions. Like comedian Mitch Hedberg once said: “When I get a cold sore, I put Carmex on it because Carmex

is supposed to heal cold sores. “I don’t know if it does, but it will make them more shiny and noticeable. It’s like a coldsore highlighter. “Maybe they could come up with an arrow that heals cold sores.” Now, I know a lot of people get cold sores (almost 58 per cent, if a U.S. study cited on Wikipedia can be trusted), so maybe catching the virus sometime in my life was inevitable anyway. But I just can’t shake the feeling that things would have been a lot better if I hadn’t succumbed to peer pressure and kissing curiosity in my middleschool days. So I say chose abstinence kids, because, when it comes down to it, even one conversation spent watching someone else’s eyes watching your throbbing, blistery lip while you talk is too many. And no one should have to end up hunched bitterly over a keyboard in her later years, looking back on all the New Years Eve countdowns that could have ended so differently if she hadn’t kissed Jeff Bennett in Grade 6. ■ Cornelia Naylor is a reporter and photographer with our sister paper, the Chilliwack Times.

here’s something seriously amiss with the attitude that underlies the way British Columbia enforces its laws, especially as they pertain to offences committed with motor vehicles wielded as weapons. That will come as no surprise to the majority of motorists who try to stick to the rules – or close to them – and every day encounter jerks who flaunt their disregard for the limbs and lives of others. High profile cases such as Grant De Patie’s, across the river in Maple Ridge, highlight the problem. The young gas station attendant was dragged to his death beneath a stolen car by a driver stealing $12 worth of gas. Grant’s killer, convicted of manslaughter in 2006, will be free this July. He was banned from driving for 10 years. A special law, “Grant’s Law,” was instituted to prevent similar occurrences – and only a handful of years after Grant’s death, it is already watered down and fading out. In another high-profile case, in Langley, Brent Parent stands convicted of using his vehicle to run down and kill Silas O’Brien of Abbotsford. The Crown has asked for eight years of jail time and a 15-year driving ban. Parent has 64 driving convictions (and a few others) under his belt, including numerous speeding offences and actions that prompted temporary bans - including driving while banned. The Crown has asked for eight years of jail time and a 15-year driving ban. Parent’s defence attorney is asking for perhaps three years in jail and a three-year driving ban, restricted to employment-only use. We’d like to ask how anyone could justify ever giving this guy his licence back. Indeed, we’d like to ask how it is that he hasn’t been banned permanently, a long time ago – since before he killed Silas OBrien, in fact. There’s an attitude problem at play here, and it is not just the attitude of the offenders that is problematic.

One way to end this reefer madness

Editor, the Times:

It is good that a Lower Mainland coalition of eight mayors is asking for the decriminalization of marijuana. While there are those who oppose this move on the grounds that pot is a gateway drug to more dangerous drugs, here is my opinion as to why they are both right, and wrong. If pot were a gateway drug then a large percentage of those over 50 would be either dead from overdose, criminally supporting a habit or just totally wasted each day from their addictions. That is my argument against the ‘gateway’ concept. On the other hand, with pot as an illegal substance the only way to obtain it is through the criminal element, the pusher. The pusher, like any good salesperson/entrepreneur, will try to up sell you to a more addictive and higher profit product because the pusher’s only interest is making money. That then is my view supporting the idea that yes, pot is a gateway drug, but only if it is illegal. I hope the mayors’ initiative

will spread to other mayors MLAs, premiers and MPs throughout the country bringing an end to the madness. Gary Huntbatch Abbotsford

Editor, the Times:

I’d like to ask you, Mr. Claxton, to consider changing your opinion about what the fundamental qualifications of our elected government officials should be (MPs may not get passing grade, Times, April 26). Your contention that to be effective in their roles, they should be “well rounded and informed in key areas”, is essentially missing out on the vital characteristics that I would like to see in our government representatives. It is my opinion that someone with personal integrity, leadership abilities, servant attitude and other basic characteristics, would serve us better than someone with basic knowledge as their “tool box”. PM was off base with treatment of CFF Editor, the Times:

Open Letter to Prime Minister Harper: Dear Mr. Harper, It is unbelievable that you could malign the CCF for being against the war with Hitler. Not only have you maligned the party but you have maligned all those members who hated war but fought anyway to protect your way of life! My father was one of these members, and I am proud of him for knowing that there is more to dealing with other nations than

constant confrontation. War is the last resort Mr. Harper, not the answer to petty demagogues stamping their feet because they can’t get their own way quickly enough. Mr. Harper, your contempt for these CCF members is appalling, especially since all you have done your whole life is belittle people. Remember Mr. Harper, it is CCF members like my father who fought and died who are providing you with your cushy position. How small minded of you to abuse them in such a cowardly way. No Mr. Harper, I am not a New Democrat, I follow the Green Party which, of course, will give you fodder for your vitriol against another person who disagrees with you. May I recommend at this time that you apologise to all the fine CCF members

who fought and died for you, and that you cease and desist from using USA tactics to bolster your ego? Signed, the proud daughter of a fine CCF soldier. Irene Cawson Mission

UBC religious study makes sense to him Editor, the Times:

There were two reports that certainly sum up why it’s my mission in writing to do battle with the religious right and its evil twin the extremist conservatives who push their reactionary beliefs. From UBC comes a study that shows analytic thinking can decrease religious belief. That certainly is nothing new to us freethinkers as it’s painfully obvious that religious people on the far right just don’t think beyond their emotions, but now it has been scientifically backed up, which is hugely important. To me, this report ties in well with a second one linking far right political conservative positions with

what the researchers called ‘low-effort thinking’. This isn’t to say that I haven’t read brilliantly argued conservative positions, but more and more conservative debate in this country has followed their American counterparts right down the toilet. A lot of people in Alberta clearly saw the dangers of uniting the religious right with political extremism and voted en masse to reject the Wild Rose Party, a party which is also pure Harperite in its low-effort thinking and its emotional worship of the failed political and economic mantras of the Republicans pure libertarian philosophy that has unleashed so much misery in our world. What those two reports show is that both the far right religious literalists and the Reform Party people hiding under the Conservative banner in Ottawa can be fought back against successfully when people aren’t swayed by the low-effort thinking of the majority on the right Robert T. CREEPY, from page A1

Crook collared in crisper Abbotsford Police and the emergency response team stormed a house in the 32100 block of George FergusonWay early Wednesday morning to find their 31-year-old robbery suspect hiding in the fridge. The man allegedly held up a pizza parlour on Old Yale Road with a gun just after midnight May 1. Police traced the suspect, who refused to surrender, to the house after locating the getaway car nearby. It seems the man gave his hiding place away by leaving the fridge’s contents immediately in front of its door. – ROCHELLE BAKER

He spoke with a distinct accent and struggled with his English. The APD also has another report of a 15-year-old girl being approached a couple of weeks ago by a man matching the description of the van driver near Townline and Maclure roads. As a result of the incidents, the APD is reminding parents to discuss personal safety with their kids and encourages them to walk with their children, or to arrange for their children to walk in pairs or groups. Investigators are looking to identify these men and anyone with information should call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225. More safety information can be found on the APD website at www. abbypd.ca or by following the link http://www.abbypd.ca/Crime-Prevention-Tips-For-Individuals.

Wakeboarders and waterskiers pull together at Albert Dyck Park Business could bring new people to the sport

MIKE HAGER Vancouver Sun

N

ext summer Abbotsford’s wakeboarders and water-skiers could be skimming across a lake boatless, pulled by a system of cables. On Monday, city council approved a request by staff to solicit plans from private companies to build and operate a public cable water ski park at Albert Dyck Park. Stu McKeown, a 32-year-old businessman and wakeboard enthusiast from Surrey, lobbied the park board to submit a request for proposals. “It’s good location right off the highway near the airport, near the boarder,” said McKeown, who plans

to submit his proposal soon. “Unfortunately with the high cost of boats, insurance, gas and that sort of thing and with our limited summer — wakeboarding is not as big up here [in Canada] as it could be.” McKeown said by charging riders about $25 an hour, a cable park could open up the sport to the masses, much like chairlifts did for the sport of skiing. Existing cable parks, many with large jumps, are predominantly used by wakeboarders, something not lost on the Fraser Valley Water Ski Club, which has been skiing on the lake for years.

Initially opposed to the idea, the club agreed to support the request for proposals after negotiating a way to share the lake with any proposed cable park said Mayor Bruce Banman. “Lo and behold they were able to come together so that they feel like it would be a benefit to one another,” Banman said. Any proposed cable park would have to be built and run at the cost of the private company Banman said, while stressing that it is still in the proposal stage and would be ready by next summer at the earliest.

God loves his kids . . . and misses them too

L

ike most parents, we are close to our kids – we miss them when they are out of town or we can’t talk to them regularly. Each fall, our eldest son is a guide in remote Northern B.C. and Yukon for three months and our only contact is an infrequent and raspy call on satellite phone. My heart goes out to parents who don’t get to see their kids for years and are sometimes separated by oceans or continents.

DAVE SCHAPANSKY

Faith that matters The longing to see our son increases as the months go on and we begin to do things in our household like: Leave his last message on the answering machine just to hear his voice.

Answer every phone call on the first ring, even if it might be one of those pesky telemarketers. The tension builds till the day our son finally comes home . . . then, at the first tinkle of the metal latch on the front gate, our house is instantly vacated as we run for the driveway to welcome him home. This reminded me of the well-known story that Jesus told about a father yearning to see his prodigal son return home again.

Jesus said that after a wayward life, the son “got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him”. Luke 15:20 The father saw his son while he was still a long ways off. I am convinced that the father was looking out the window, straining for even a glimpse of his wayward yet precious son

coming down the road. I wonder, how many times did the father drop what he was doing just to look down that road? A thousand times? Maybe more? Knowing that there is a prodigal son in each of us, I wonder if our heavenly Father listens to his answering machine, just to hear your voice again? Is He looking down the road for you? I do know that God actually will see your very first step on your road back to Him.

He is looking for it, He is waiting for it. Even a baby step. And then God, your Father will run to you, wrap His arms around you and kiss you. There is an old saying that “when we take one step towards God, He takes two”. It is true. Take that step today! ■ Dave Schapansky is a pastor at Abbotsford Christian Assembly.

MAY IS CNIB VISION HEALTH MONTH

Seeing beyond vision loss CNIB helps teen succeed with vision loss

Jeremy was born with bilateral corneal opacities, an eye condition that left him blind in his left eye and partially sighted in his right. Upon his diagnosis Jeremy’s family was referred to CNIB (the Canadian National Institute for the Blind), a charity that provides support to Canadians who are blind or partially sighted. When Jeremy was young, CNIB taught him how to read Braille and to use a white cane to walk around safely by himself - and he continues to receive these orientation lessons once a week. Jeremy also attends CNIB’s summer camp and says that he can’t wait for it each year. CNIB camps give children and youth with vision loss the opportunity to learn new skills and try new activities in a safe and accessible environment.

sources, and CNIB relies on charitable donations to provide services at no cost to people who are blind or partially sighted.

A bold adventurer at heart, Jeremy says that one of his favourite activities last year at camp was the high-ropes course – a web of platforms and ropes that campers navigate from above ground.

To make a donation or learn more about how you can support CNIB British Columbia programs and services, visit www.cnib.ca or call our toll-free CNIB Helpline at 1-800-563-2642.

Jeremy also explains that, using his sense of touch and direction from camp counsellors, he was able to kayak, rock climb and even ride a horse.

Exposure to sunlight is associated with a higher risk of developing eye disease, which can cause vision loss. Wear sunglasses that block 99% of UVA and UVB rays.

In order to stay active throughout the year between camps, Jeremy attends CNIB’s monthly youth group for kids who are blind or partially sighted. Jeremy’s mom, Gloria, says that these social activities have boosted Jeremy’s confidence and independence more than she could have ever imagined.

Jeremy Ferrer faces the same big decisions most teens do in their final year of high school. But the Surrey teen also faces challenges many of his peers will never understand – because like thousands of others scattered across BC, Jeremy is blind.

“It makes me feel like I’m not the only one with vision loss,” he explains. “There’s other kids with vision loss too.”

New program helps seniors, people with disabilities modify homes

Would a new ramp, handrails or walk-in shower help you maintain your independence at home? BC Housing’s new Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program helps low-income B.C. seniors and people with disabilities make home modifications that will allow them to continue living at home. Through HAFI, homeowners and landlords with eligible tenants can apply for financial assistance of up to $20,000 for improvements that make their home more accessible and safe. The goal of the program is to enable people who have physical limitations to live at home longer. People’s physical needs change over time – sometimes, a small improvement to a home can make the difference between being able to live independently or not. Types of eligible projects include: 1 A=95!=G?J G9 I=??B='J &! JH=G!B='J0 1 E=<%J "&! $=J$ &" =77$JJ0 1 .=J'/H&/!$=7I B&!C &! JH&!=K$ =!$=J in the kitchen, 1 6$D$! As well, the total household income and assets must be below a certain limit. BC Housing can tell you the income and house value limits for your area when you apply. A gift for bringing clay to life CLAYMATION, from page A1 above and beyond the rest. “One judge from Vancouver Film School said his video had all the elements in one; story, humour and quality of the actual filming.” The video’s storyline centres around the Beautiful British Columbia Blueberry Fusion Supreme with Buttercream Icing, a fictitious doughnut that the benevolent old man, a sassy squirrel and an evil eagle each want. As the old man and squirrel get into an argument over the sweet treat, an eagle swoops down to attack the squirrel. The old man has to make a tough decision: will he sacrifice his doughnut to the eagle for an undeserving squirrel? It took 10-12 hours a day for more than 10 days for Marcus to complete the filming — moving parts of the clay figures for each frame.

“Very few people have the patience for this,” said his mom. Voicing the characters was one of his favourite tasks, taking 11 hours to complete. Marcus wanted to include B.C. content; photos of Manning Park, the Stanley Park totem pole and The Vancouver Sun masthead on the old man’s newspaper. For his efforts, Marcus won a $1,000 Best Buy gift card, a trophy and the video was played on CBC News with Tony Parsons last week. But perhaps the biggest thrill was how people reacted to his video at the awards gala. “My favourite thing is to see the audience reaction,” he said. “It’s like a pat on the back that I did something right. Even if I didn’t win, I know the audience liked it. That’s worth so much.” ■ To view Sweet Sacrifice go to http://bit.ly/x5AsZJ.

Abby couple ready to wed in Vegas WEDDING, from page A6 Van Empel, who owns a condo at the Platinum Hotel in the heart of Las Vegas, phoned up Slipp and told him he’d offer it to the couple and kick in the flights to boot. Slipp, spurred on by the generous gift contacted the Chapel of Bells in Vegas, which also agreed to offer up a deluxe package to the couple for free. Slipp then turned to Abbotsford jeweller Brian Lee who jumped on board to provide a ring for Roth. The team then presented the couple with the surprise wedding package, and next, the jewelry gift on the air last Friday and Monday – but with a catch. They could have their dream wedding but they had to get married in a month. It was a done deal as far as Betsworth and Roth were concerned. They are getting married on the May long weekend. “We were blown away. We’re so grateful I just can’t put it into words,” said Betsworth.

“I couldn’t believe somebody would do this for us. It’s just so surreal, I can barely believe it’s happening.” Van Empel said he couldn’t let obstacles to something as special as a wedding go on if he could help. “They just seemed to be the best people and the [fiancé] said he really wanted to get married,” said Van Empel, adding many members of the community teamed up to help the couple out. “This wasn’t about me . . . It’s not just one person doing one thing. It’s everybody doing it together.” Lee also said he was pleased to help. What’s more, for every $50 dollars people donate to the couple’s upcoming trip, Lee will add a diamond to Roth’s wedding band. Betsworth said there’s little for her to do except organize her dress. “I don’t think anybody could have dreamed [the Hot Seat call] would get this kind of attention,” she said. “All the pieces have come together for us.”

Interest could lead to inquest TRAGEDY, from page A3 Bond to look into the regulations around hang gliding, which falls under Transport Canada but is largely selfregulated compared with the restrictions placed on larger aircraft, float planes, skydivers, ultralights and even hotair balloons. There have been five hang gliding fatalities across Canada in the past decade, three of those in B.C. Calling Saturday’s fatal flight “an absolutely horrific tragedy,” Bond said Tuesday she has asked staff for backgound on the regulations around the sport. But she added she will wait

until investigations by the police and B.C. Coroners Service have been wrapped up before she considers whether to pursue any changes. The Coroners Ser vice, she added, may potentially provide recommendations around regulation, depending on its investigation. “There are a number of parallel investigations underway as we speak. Obviously I have to be very careful,” Bond said in Victoria. Barb McLintock, spokeswoman for the B.C. Coroners Service, said Tuesday the high interest around the case could possibly also lead to an inquest but no decision has been made on that yet.

picture is worth a thousand words, and it becomes a powerful medium to convey human experience, especially in times of strife and suffering. Bearing Witness in the Great Hall at The Reach Gallery and Museum tells those stories through socially engaged images and works of art that offer a powerful means of communicating that human experience. Drawn entirely from the Vancouver Art Gallery’s permanent collection, this exhibition brings together the work of 27 artists of the 20th century who examine industrial exploitation, large-scale government action, the atrocities of warfare, the history of slavery and the representation of women in society.

The Reach will also present a series of free, high calibre films in conjunction with the Bearing Witness exhibit until its completion in June. These include Mandela: Son of Africa - Father of a Nation, on May 24 at 7 p.m. The film tells the moving story of Nelson Mandela’s lifelong struggle against the racist oppression of his homeland. Other films are: Hearts and Minds, about the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, May 3 at 7 p.m. and June 9, at 3 p.m.; The Atomic Café, a dark comedic take on the paranoia of the Cold War era in the United States, which is resurging today, on May 10 and May 31 at 7 p.m.; and Omagh, which dramatizes the Real lRA’s bomb attack in 1998 in Omagh, Ireland, on May 17 at 7 p.m. and June 9 at 1 p.m. see REACH, page A22

Wide variety of informative art REACH, from page A21 Also in conjunction with the Bearing Witness exhibit is an interactive program that aims to engage very young artists and older ones in creating art as a vehicle for social change. The Arts Action Heritage Project Postcards from the Edge draws together young people from 15 to 30 years old and adults who are 50-plus to learn about the arts and social action, and then engages them in the creation of their own art work. Participants will attend a tour of the exhibition led by Mission writer Marion Quednau, and Abbotsford visual artist Linda Klippenstein. The artists will lead a short

presentation on art and social action, a discussion of the art in Bearing Witness and an art session. Participants will create “postcards from the edge” with a short story or poem on one side and visual art on the other that is inspired by their own experiences. These will be displayed in a virtual gallery on-line and at The Reach during the first week of June. The AAH Postcard sessions are on through May. Those who participate are invited to an evening reception on June 7. ■ For more information and to participate contact AAH artistic director Kat Wahamaa at aahproject@ thereach.ca

Heat take Toronto 3-1

Abbotsford rides 11-game win streak into Game 2 on road CAM TUCKER Vancouver Sun

T

he Abbotsford Heat got scoring from a rookie forward, a sophomore defenceman and a grizzled veteran, to go along with clutch goaltending from Danny Taylor. All totalled, the Heat scored a 3-1 road victory Tuesday over the Toronto Marlies to take a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-seven American Hockey League Western Conference semifinal. The win makes it 11 in a row for the Fraser Valley franchise, dating back to the regular season. Chris Breen’s first goal of the playoffs at 8: 17 of the second period proved to be the winner. Now in his second full season with the Heat, Breen’s goal - his first since Dec. 29 – came just over two minutes after Abbotsford successfully killed off a J.P. Testwuide minor for tripping. Rookie Max Reinhart, the Calgary Flames third-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft who joined the Heat after the Kootenay Ice were eliminated from the WHL playoffs, opened scoring late in the first period. Reinhart was the beneficiary of some good work around the net from linemates Greg Nemisz and Hugh Jessiman, eventually lifting a loose puck over a sprawled-out Ben Scrivens for his first goal of the Heat’s play-off run. The Vancouver product now has three goals and four points in two

– GREG ABEL/TORONTO MARLIES/FOR THE TIMES

Abbotsford Heat’s Carter Bancks digs along the boards during the Heat’s 3-1 win against the Marlies Tuesday night in Toronto. Game 2 goes tonight before the series comes back to Abbotsford for Game 3 on Saturday night at the AESC. games, regular season and playoffs, against the Marlies since being recalled from the WHL. Guillaume Desbiens scored the insurance marker into an empty net with 1: 21 left in the third period. His first goal of these play-offs, Desbiens slid the puck into a wide open cage from around the centre

red-line. It wasn’t at all pretty, but what a goal it turned out to be, as the Heat withstood almost 20 minutes of pressure from a Marlies team desperate for the equalizer. Toronto cut Abbotsford’s two-goal lead in half just 1: 27 into the third period. Matt Frattin neatly deflected

home a Joe Colborne centering pass to give the Marlies life. Game 2 of the series goes Thursday (4 p.m. PDT) in Toronto. The Heat host Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary) at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre on Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday (if needed) at 7 p.m.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of Brenda. Brenda Schettler (nee Collins) was born in Neepawa, Manitoba, July 24, 1949, and passed away April, 21, 2012 at Christine Morrison Hospice after a courageous three year battle against cancer. She spent her childhood on the family farm in Arden, MB. She was Don and Vivian’s first child and enjoyed many of the activities that rural life afforded. Among those riding her pony to Winchester School and having a multitude of pets. She completed her elementary grades at Winchester School and started her high school in Arden, but to her dismay was forced by a school closure to finish grade 12 in Plumas, where she first met her husband, Grant. She furthered her education at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, which lead to employment in Brandon and later Winnipeg. Brenda and Grant were married in 1974. Grant’s teaching assignments lead to stops in Morden and Elkhorn, Manitoba. While in Elkhorn, Brenda worked for Steve Hegion (Copperhead Oil) and she had great memories of that time. Brenda had acquired a miniature schnauzer (K.K.) and Steve suggested she could take him to the office and from that time onward, K.K. went to work with Brenda. Alas, it was time to move on and Brenda and Grant headed to British Columbia. The move had been discussed and made possible by John and Della. Their friendship with John and Della also included the first trips to Mexico and Hawaii. Thank you! Brenda continued to work in Abbotsford and she planned her retirement for the summer of 2008 to coincide with Grant’s in order that trips of longer duration could be undertaken in their motorhome. The discovery of cancer in the fall of 2008 meant a change of plans although she persevered through the pain and did manage several more trips and two extended stays in Hawaii. Brenda enjoyed romantic dinners with Grant, visiting and dining with friends, laughter, good food and spirits, camping with the RV, exercising, walking, beaches, oceans and Hawaii. It remained her favourite holiday destination. Thank you to friends, family and medical staff for their care and consideration over the last three years. A special thank you to the staff at Christine Morrison Hospice for the compassion and care shown to Brenda during the last week of her life. They treated her with respect and dignity and it was a great comfort to her family to receive such tremendous support during this difficult time. Brenda leaves behind husband, Grant, father, Don, sisters: Jan, Nancy (Dwight), Diane (Martin) and brothers, Randy (Judy), Brent (Ginny), aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Brenda was predeceased in 2006 by her mother, Vivian. At Brenda’s request there will be no service, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Brenda’s name to The Christine Morrison Hospice Society, Mission, BC or The BC Cancer Foundation would be greatly appreciated. A celebration of Brenda’s life will be held at a later date.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Continue to chase money, seek more work at better pay, cultivate new clients, buy and sell. You have treated others with ambition (or caution) more than love, these past two years. You’ve wanted a “working partnership.” This will change in October, when more normally affectionate links return. Until then, you can improve relations by communicating – and by travelling to visit the other. But remember, in communicating, focus on ideas, not “facts.” Wisdom, gentle love and travel prospects arise Monday/Tuesday. Be ambitious midweek. Happiness, friends, flirtations Friday onward. Taurus April 20-May 20: Your energy, charisma, effectiveness and clout remain high. Don’t waste this time – get out, apply for a job, impress the boss, ask favours, start important projects. Think: what, realistically, would most improve your life? Set this as a goal, and begin the steps toward it. Sunday’s for relationships. Delve deep Monday/Tuesday: secrets, large finances, intimacy, lifestyle commitments and sexual desires all hold benefits. Wisdom, love, intellectual, travel and broadcasting themes bless you midweek – but they run into opposition Thursday noon. Be ambitious Friday/Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Lie low, rest and recuperate. June will begin one of the luckiest, most expansive years of your life, so get your beauty sleep now, physically and emotionally. Home continues to be a bit friction-prone. You remain attractive to others. Tackle routine chores (nothing new) Sunday. This night and Monday/Tuesday feature relationships – be diplomatic, co-operate. Midweek brings depths, mysteries, and potential profit. Subconscious desires rise to the surface. But after 9 a.m. Thursday (PDT) fortify against problems, rather than expand. A gentle, mellow mood sweetens Friday/Saturday.

Cancer June 21-July 22: News – of a friendship, perhaps a light romance prospect – arrives over the next few weeks. But it might arrive too late for you to do anything about it. Be inquisitive, contact those you haven’t seen for awhile, etc. This is a month of popularity, social delights, flirtations and entertainment – visit, invite, join or create a party. Sunday’s romantic: enjoy the beauty of nature. Tackle chores Monday/Tuesday (start no tasks Sunday night). Relationships, exciting meetings and opposition might both come midweek. Be diplomatic: love is possible. Intimacy, finances Friday/Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Until early July, money will come: bank it; only buy essentials. In the weeks ahead (through June) a former friend or “lite lover” might return. Spend Sunday at home or in nature. Romance, a creative surge, speculation, joys with children fill Monday/Tuesday. Tackle chores Wednesday/Thursday. Relationships, exciting meetings, perhaps a challenge, arrive Friday/Saturday. Be diplomatic – realize partners or competitors have more sway than you do, right now, over the “big people.” For this entire week, be ambitious, forward your career, seek to impress bosses or launch strong projects. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Bosses, parents still favour you, although they’ll be indecisive through late June, leaving you wondering which way they want you to go. But the “favour” lasts right into early August, so you’ll have sufficient time to firm things up. In fact, despite the slowness and dead-ends of your career over the last year, these bosses are considering you for a promotion. It likely won’t come through until September onward, so be on your good behaviour. (Best isn’t attainable right now, you’re too intense.) All week, welcome love, legal, travel openings. Your sexuality radiates midweek.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Though legal matters might have bugged you over the past 14 months, a kind of healing entered in April, and continues into August. At the very least, you feel less traumatized; perhaps you’ve started to forgive your “enemy.” By September onward, you might even begin winning the suit. (Chances switch from 80 per cent against you, to 80 for you.) Talk comes, about sex, intimacy, or financial situations. You might seize a major success, in money or intimacy, by May 11 to 14. Sunday’s shopping yields empty results. Forgo it. Travel, talk Monday/Tuesday. Home, midweek. Romance, Friday on. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Exciting relationships and exciting opportunities – welcome these wherever they appear. Someone you know might hold a “gold key” for you. You’re energetic, charming Sunday, but don’t tackle new things. Money, earnings, purchases, possessions – and a sensual urge – fill Monday/Tuesday. Chase what you want! Travel, communications, errands and paperwork arise Tuesday night to Thursday. Don’t invest, these few days. Home, children, property, security and retirement come into focus Friday/ Saturday. Someone who talks more than usual, wants something with (not from) you. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Bosses are shorttempered, but peers are sweet and affectionate. Be careful – don’t get involved with the boss, nor mix sex and power. (If you ever act unethically in a career, you’ll likely abandon that career sooner than later.) This is a good week to tackle big chores, and to buy machinery (Monday to Wednesday, and Saturday evening). Lie low, rest Sunday. Your energy and charisma return this night to Tuesday. Start things Monday. Chase money, spend and “recount possessions” Wednesday/Thursday. DON’T invest. Friends, short trips, communications grow lively Friday/Saturday.

May 6 - 12, 2012 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: A trend of romance, creativity, speculation, art, beauty, charming kids, still fills your days. Of course, romance will only come in as far and wide as your expectation or hope. Resentment or despair can defeat the best of prospects. Coworkers are affectionate. Still, wait until September onward to make a bid for a workplace “appointment” (e.g., union designation or promotion). Be optimistic, social Sunday. Retreat this eve for contemplation and rest – to Tuesday eve. Then, you’ll emerge strong, vibrant and ready to start things Wednesday/Thursday – do! Money, late week. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Take power naps. You’re in “hibernation mode” these weeks. You could be building to a lucky climax in real estate, home, family, security, retirement, agriculture, gardening and similar zones. Remember, this luck only lasts to early June, so if you want/need a better home, get out and look for it a.s.a.p. An opportunity virtually confronts you this week (it reaches peak intensity May 13). Cool your jets Sunday: results are elusive. Your optimism, popularity and social joys grow Monday/Tuesday. Retreat, rest, study and think midweek. Your energy, charisma return Friday/Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: This is a busy but not important time. Messages surround you, you run repeated errands. Two areas are important: relationships, which remain more intense until early July) and family/real estate, which have begun to please you but might still hold a “trap” until late August. Take advantage of relationships (form money partnerships) now forward, but hold off on major home/realty action until September onward. Sunday’s mellow. Be ambitious Tuesday/Wednesday. Wishes come true, popularity soars, Wednesday/Thursday. Retreat, rest and plan late week. Soon, good career news. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 604-727-3673
