Gaming aids local groups Grants go to support community social services, sports and arts

bbotsford and Mission non-profit groups have received more than $ 8 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n gaming grants from the p r ov i n c i a l M i n i s t r y o f Public Safety and Solicitor General. Mission groups received $130,510 in the latest round of gaming grants. They are: Mission Arts Council, $10,000; Long-Term Inmates Now in the Community (L.I.N.C.), $20,950; Mission Association for

Community Living, $46,260; Mission Community Services, $32,000; Mission Adopta-Block Society, $11,300; and the Sweet Adelines International, $10,000. Seventeen Abbotsford non-profit groups were awarded $735,810. These include many social service groups, such as the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre, $160,00; Abbotsford Youth Commission, $83,500; the Centre for Epilepsy and Sei-

zure Education B.C., $200,000; Abbotsford International Airshow, $50,000; Pacificsport Regional Sport Centre, Fraser Valley, $50,000; the John Howard Society, $45,000; Abbotsford Hospice Society, $40,000; and Abbotsford Community Services, $30,000. Others are Special Olympics B. C. Society Abbotsford, $18,750; B.C. Schizophrenia Society, $2,400; Fraser Valley Invasive Plant Council, $5,000; Kinsmen Club of Abbotsford, $3,500; Mount Lehman Community Asso-

ciation, $6,060; Valley Echoes Chorus Society, $10,000; Abbotsford Arts Council, $22,000; Abbotsford Judo Club, $7,600; and the Fraser Valley Water Colour Society, $2,000. In B.C., 178 recipient groups will share $8,367,982 in provincial gaming grants. Grant recipients offer programs in the areas of sports, arts and culture, public safety, environment, human and social services, and parent advisory and district parent advisory councils. Many of those groups provide important services for British Columbia families.

Sign up for camp Registration is open for the University of the Fraser Valley’s popular Science Rocks summer camps. The program is for Grade 4-6 students, with five camps structured to encourage the development of scientific skills and led by senior UFV science students or recent alumni. A week-long camp is $250 ($200 for first session as it is a short week). The camps start July 3, the last starts on July 30.
