FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

It is hard to believe that this issue marks Year Four of Pulse Magazine! What started as an amateur black and white flyer has grown into a publication to be taken seriously. Over the years we have followed the trends, seen many businesses come and go, and endeavored to improve with every issue. Thank you to everyone who has contributed, made suggestions or critiques... you have helped this magazine evolve! Pulse isn't trying to bring cutting edge news headlines to your door. Our goal is to give you the info not provided elsewhere- on nightlife, local music, happy hour specials and more! Now everything is available online... check out our interactive website at www.pulsemagazinenaples.com. As we enter the height of Season, what was old is new again. Seeing Naples through the eyes of your out-of-town guest is the best way to rediscover this town. You might find yourself going to the more cliché locations when entertaining, but it is a great reminder of why we moved here in the first place. Yes, it can be a little "Pleasantville" with its white sand beaches and immaculately manicured foliage. This is the image Naples wants to present to visitors to keep them coming back year after year. Residents, of course, know there is more depth to the perception! The past year has presented challenges for everyone, but Pulse is confident that the tide is changing. We encourage you to support local businesses, especially those advertised on these pages. In addition, enjoy the freebies that Naples has to offer... award winning beaches, the warm weather and, of course, Pulse Magazine!

When and why did Friends of the Florida Panther get started? The Friends of the Florida Panther Refuge was established in 1997, and is one of over 200 Friends groups nationwide that were established to support 544 federal wildlife refuges managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Each of these grassroots organizations provides public education, for which most refuges do not have the ÀQDQFLDO RU SHUVRQQHO UHVRXUFHV DQG E\ ZRUNLQJ DV DGYRFDWHV IRU the refuges with local, state, and federal realms. The Florida Panther Wildlife Refuge was established in 1989 under the authority of the Endangered Species Act to protect the Florida panther and its habitat. What is the mission statement of the organization? Our particular Friends group is very unique in the national system because it has a dual mission. In addition to providing education and advocacy resources, we serve as the primary private sector advocate for the

approximately 100 highly endangered Florida panthers left in the wild. The great majority of these rare animals are located in Collier County, and virtually all of them are living in SWFL. The Friends of the Florida Panther Refuge conducts a wide variety of adult and children outreach programs, both on and off the refuge, as well as advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels.

Panthers are reclusive creatures that prefer to remain in the comfort of the wilderness, and do not wish to interact with humans. Are panthers territorial and how does this trait affect them when there is less habitat? Panthers are territorial animals. The Refuge is a federally protected land established under the authority of the Endangered Species Act. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, of the U.S. Department of the Interior, it was established in 1989 primarily to protect the Florida panther and its habitat. Valentine’s Day Christmas has come and gone, the New Year was welcomed in grand style, and now Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. If you haven’t already started making those all important plans for your long-time sweetie or new crush, there’s no better time to begin than right now. You’ve been here before and you know how it works, right? A sentimental card presented with a homemade breakfast – check. Flowers delivered to her work – check. A loving mid-day text to him hinting of a hot night to come - check. An elegant meal served in a charming restaurant…you might want to pause right here. Detail and presentation is the key to any successful V-Day plan, and the restaurant you choose is no exception. The right or wrong ambiance will set the tone for the entire evening, and one wrong move may even negate any hard earned brownie points. Unless your sweetheart insists on eating at a certain restaurant for every special occasion, don’t make the mistake of repeating last year’s reservation. To ensure that your Valentine’s Day ends perfectly, read on to discover which restaurants are being frequented by young Neapolitans. Picture this…you arrive at the restaurant where you’re greeted by your own private butler, served glasses of champagne, then escorted to a private cabana nestled in the white sand and featuring a pristine view of the Gulf. You are seated at a candlelit table scattered with rose petals. After a perfect meal accompanied by the music and wine of your choice, the table is taken away, and you and your date are left alone to cuddle on the soft couch and watch the sunset. No, this isn’t a scene from a movie or a Sandals commercial. This is the type of exquisite service you can expect with the special Beach Dinner Package at Baleen, located in the LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort at 9891 Gulf Shore Drive. While offered any night of the week, these packages are especially popular during Valentine’s Day, according to General Manager Anthony Hobbs. They come at a price, $400-$600 per couple depending on the package you choose, but the cabana is yours for the night and the experience is unmatched.

Ask Joey

Advice Column

Photography by Robert Hayman

I have been with my fiancé for almost five years and we typically get along great. Recently, I have been really stressed at work and find myself bringing the stress home. I know I shouldn't and I'm working on that. Last week, my fiancé and I had the worst argument in the history of our relationship. Even though we have both since apologized, I am finding it hard to move past some of the things he said since his words were really severe and personal. It is starting to affect our daily lives because I continue to feel defensive and keep hearing his comments going through my head. I understand that these things were said in the heat of the moment, but they can't be taken back now and I am having a lot of trouble moving on. What can I do? - Verbally Scarred

Dear Joey,

Many times when we are angry we say things we regret. Typically, we take it out on those closest to us. It sounds as though you are usually in sync with your fiancé and these verbal battles are not an everyday occurrence. Did you express your feelings about the specific statements that hurt you this much? Did you lash out and say things that you regret as well? If the answer is yes, then it is time to move on. If you are defensive because there is an element of truth in something he said, then you need to look inside yourself to find that reality and address it. Because your fiancé knows you so well, he is able to pinpoint the issues that hit closest to home during an argument. Try taking some time out for yourself after work. Hit the gym, vent to friends, or write out your frustrations in a journal before taking them out on your fiancé. It is time to be extra attentive to your relationship. Maybe go to sunset or do something with just the two of you to bring the relationship back to a normal level. Look for the good instead of the bad, and remember why you have been so close for so long. Make sure you have made clear how unacceptable it is to say those harsh things to each other, and put it behind you. It's all part of a bigger picture, which is learning about each other and growing together as a couple.

Dear Verbally Scarred,

- Joey

I recently had the opportunity to chat with international dj / producer, Mickey Nightrain, in his Naples music studio. The amicable thirty-yearold is animated and vivacious, yet humble. 2008 MOONY MANN BATTLE OF THE BANDS

A

four piece hometown classic rock band claims the 2008 Moony Mann Battle of the Bands championship trophy and the $2000 in Cash and Prizes on November 25. Pete, Tom, Chris and Art, collectively known as Weathered Souls, earned the title by performing strong bluesy rock tunes and promoting their shows. Their supporters turned out consistently to vote for them throughout the sometimes grueling competition which began in early August of 2008. The Blue Monkey Bar & Grill at 7750 Mission Hills Dr, hosted the event. The battle finale featured three well known "working" bands from Naples. The finalists included BOZ & BON, a husband and wife acoustic duo whose spot on vocal harmonies and quick wit make them an instant hit with crowds. You can see them perform at local venues and occasionally in downtown Naples on Fifth Ave S. BACKLASH, a

veteran band who performed in the 2007 and 2008 finals, managed to fit the 2008 Battle of the Bands into their busy work schedule. Their classic rock covers brought out loyal supporters throughout the five month long event. This group can be seen at area venues and recently performed at the Swamp Buggy Races. With strong vocals and amazing guitar licks, Weathered Souls turned up the heat at the right time and received more votes in the final show than any other band during the entire five month Battle! After the victory, the group took home $1000 in cash, a $500 gift certificate from Gator Music Supply, a $500 studio recording package from Ultimate Force Records and the 2008 Moony Mann Battle of the Bands Championship Trophy. The event ended in classic rock-n-roll fashion as a last minute controversy led to a heated discussion about an infraction of the offi-

Stressed?

by Jessica Cudar

Everyone has their share of stress in today's technologically advanced and fast-paced world. We are plugged into society 24/7, and if you are not engaged at the moment, there is certainly a call, page, fax, email or text on the way. It is no wonder that countless individuals are feeling excessive amounts of pressure and anxiety. Each of us can be affected by both internal and external stress. Internal stress is based on societal programming from family, teachers, friends, and media networks. These are the emotions governing us whether we are aware of them or not, such as worry or fear. External stress comes from our physical environment, and it is produced by the daily expectations and difficulties that we typically confront. These are factors that we are conscious of, such as work, personal relationships and finances. Both forms of stress can be detrimental to us mentally and physically. Stress can be difficult to address because it is a subjective sensation with various symptoms. The ability to handle stress effectively is determined by overall physical and mental health. Proper nutrition combined with adequate amounts of exercise and sleep are vital components to the health and well-being of every individual. These are the building blocks to obtaining optimal health. Some examples of unmanaged stress might be weight gain, decreased immunity, and insomnia. It's also important to recognize unhealthy ways of coping with stress. Certain individuals may use anger as a form of stress relief and lash out at others. Many people internalize their stress and deal with it through addiction or emotional eating. Others may have been suppressing their stress for so long that it shows up in the form of a chronic illness that worsens when they are under intense amounts of stress. The key to handling stress appropriately is to find healthy outlets. What works for one person may not be suitable for another. If you have tried to deal with your stress and you are not experiencing relief, acupuncture might alleviate this unwanted tension. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of conditions. When practiced by a qualified Acupuncture Physician, it is an extremely safe healing modality with no serious side effects. Acupuncture works by inserting very tiny, sterile, disposable needles into the points of the body necessary to correct the underlying dysfunction, and to restore the balance of the body. Most patients feel a slight sensation while the needles are being inserted, and then do not feel the presence of the needles at all. In fact, many people are so comfortable during the treatment that they fall asleep. Treatment times vary from person to person, but most acupuncture sessions take approximately 20-30 minutes. Studies indicate that acupuncture works by releasing endorphins (natural anti-stress chemicals) into the body, thereby decreasing healing time; relieving pain and bringing the patient back to a state of health. These endorphins promote relaxation, create a sense of well-being and enhance immunity. Acupuncture is routinely and successfully used to treat stress, anxiety and depression as well as a multitude of other conditions. It is crucial that we find ways to deal with our anxieties instead of just covering them up with a substance or pretending that they do not exist at all. For more information or to schedule an acupuncture appointment with a board certified Acupuncture Physician, call The Spa at Absolute Health at 239-261-8033. PULSE MAGAZINE

Owner Jamie calls this new restaurant "cheap & cheerful," a laid-back Jimmy Buffet style eatery that caters to locals. You can count on authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwiches from the Philadelphia natives. Other dinner entrees include homemade pizza, chicken pot pie, meatloaf and fish & chips. This is your neighborhood bar! Bring the kids, relax, have a drink and watch a game on their 17 TVs.

NEW: NOODLES $5 HH MENU

Finally, an upscale restaurant recognizes that everyone loves a bargain! Noodles Cafe, located at 1585 Pine Ridge Rd, has launched a new Happy Hour menu with thirty $5 items.

NEW: TAVERN ON THE BAY

In case there weren’t enough sports bars in town, Tavern on the Bay, located at 489 Bayfront Place, boasts the largest big screen HD TV in SWFL. It’s supposedly better than “being there”, so sports fans check it out! Don’t let the downtown address make you nervous, the drinks are quite affordable.

intense competition. The pageant included three competition categories: personality and interview, swimsuit, and evening gown. The winners now proceed to the Miss Florida pageant and possibly on to Miss USA! Pulse Magazine's Editor, Pamela Lazarto, was a judge along with five other judges from the areas of beauty, fashion, television and business. Suzi Hosfeld is the volunteer Director, as well as a nationally recognized pageant coach and the 1983 Miss Wisconsin USA. The emcees were Maria deMoya and Brad Dohack. The goal of these pageants is to offer local girls and young women a chance to build the confidence and determination to make their personal dreams come true. They learn positive ways to proceed under stress; practice poise, grace, and public speaking skills. This experience can also open doors to career opportunities, further development of life interests and new friendships. The annual Miss Naples USA pageant offers a prize package valued at over $14,000. For more information on the Miss Naples USA or Miss Naples Teen USA pageants, or to request an application, please contact Envy Pageant Productions at missnaplesusa@yahoo.com or call the pageant offices at 822-4661.

TOP 10 TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME By Jeff Gunning, PGA Professional at

6281 Naples Blvd. (239) 254-1230 The following are 10 simple tips that will help any golfer to improve his or her game. To supplement any of these suggestions, golfers might also consider getting lessons from a PGA Professional.

1. EXERCISE YOUR GOLF MUSCLES. Both precision muscles and athletic muscles need to be exercised on a regular basis. Consult a professional to begin a yoga or ongoing exercise program to improve your performance. 2. PRACTICE ALL OF THE SHOTS. Your golf swing needs to be versatile, and the best way to make it versatile is practice, practice, practice. Practice with all of your clubs and hit them different distances while at the driving range or short game area.

3. KNOW THE GOLF COURSE. Golf courses and holes each have different personalities. Be prepared for different distances, visuals and terrains by knowing your yardages before you strike the ball. A yardage indicator is a great accessory to have in your golf bag.

4. RULES OF PLAY & FACILITY. To help improve pace, enjoyment level, and safety, golfers should know the various forms of play. USGA Rules of Golf speaks to many forms. Also, facilities have common rules and local rules, so contact the facility to avoid any unnecessary problems.

5. CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT. Before a round of golf, golfers should have the proper number of clubs and set makeup as well as balls, tees, gloves, shoes and any other necessary equipment. After the round, check for lost clubs and/or damages.

6. DOES YOUR EQUIPMENT FIT YOU? Most golfers do a good job preparing for their round of golf, but do not realize their oncourse potential because of an improper fit. A certified fitting expert can ensure your clubs are specifically fitted to you, which will improve your on-course performance.

7. TEE SHOTS. Select the widest part of the fairway as your landing area or channel. Upon choosing the proper landing area, let tempo and balance be your most important swing thought. Most successful players have a good finish position.

8. IRON PLAY. Precision and steadiness lead to good iron play. A steady head throughout the swing and controlled hand action are the ultimate combination for hitting the ball crisply. Practice hitting balls with your feet together to feel the action.

9. PROPER BALL POSITION & POSTURE. It is very necessary to combine the appropriate muscle movement (affected by width of stance) with proper use of clubhead (affected by ball position). Keep your method simple, yet effective.

10. VERSATILITY = GOOD SHORT GAME. Learn to hit different scoring (short game area) shots with all clubs, including your putter, wedges and hybrids. It is extremely important that your putter and wedges be properly fitted in order to adjust to different courses, grasses and conditions. PULSE MAGAZINE

creative force behind "NRS ORIGINALS", Nicole Rae Styer, while she was in Naples visiting family.

C: Tell me a little about yourself... where did you grow up?

for the arts. C: How did you get into fashion design?

Perspectives

NRS: I have been creating since I was little. I loved art.

C: Where did you go to school? NRS: I went to school in

MA for painting, and then on to The University of the Arts, in Philly, where I received a BFA in textiles.

NRS: Very sexy panties and corsets that are embellished and hand dyed as well as

boy shorts and bra sets! C: Did you always want to be a designer? NRS: No, when I was little, I wanted to be a bag lady! I

liked the way they dressed in layers and carried bags of treasures! I laugh to myself every time I go out the door juggling bags of designs and fabrics! C: Describe your personal style in one word NRS: Hard one... Fantastic! C: What is your

favorite magazine? NRS: Whenever I am in town, the first thing I pick up is the current issue of Pulse! C: Thanks Nicole.

CONTROL YOUR CREDIT, DON’T LET IT CONTROL YOU

By Brett Donley

Some people may start as early as in their teen years and others may wait well into their twenties before deciding to borrow money and create what we all know as debt. With this debt comes the responsibility to pay it back and bigger responsibility to be held accountable for any errors or payments along the way. From the moment you start borrowing money to buy items such as education, electronics, transportation, or even a home, there are scorecards that keep track of your timeliness, and become a digital imprint that follows you through your entire life. The score range is 300-850, and where you fall in there can determine how many hundreds of dollars you will save or spend. What does it take to build credit and to keep your score high? Your Fico or credit score is affected by five main factors. The first is your Payment History, which makes up about 35% of a typical score. The dates of late payments (the newer a late payment, the more it affects your score), frequency (compare a person who has one or two late payments versus someone who has a dozen), severity (are they only 30 days late or have they not made a payment in 120 days). The only time you are reported to an agency as late is if you are late by 30 days or more. The second most important is How Much You Owe which covers 30% of your score. This is the gap between each individual account on credit cards (revolving debt), and across your total amount of debt combined versus how much is available. The score will also look into how much you originally borrowed on installments loans such as cars and automobiles, and how much you owe currently. The third and fourth factors are How Long You've Had Credit and Your Last Application for Credit. The total combined for those two accounts is 25% of your credit. The first focuses on the age of your oldest account (the older the accounts on your credit in good standing the better), and the average age of all your accounts. The other looks into how many accounts you have applied for, how many have opened recently, and the time passed since applying and opening those accounts. The more credit you apply for and open within a certain amount of time can have adverse affects on your credit score. The fifth and final factor is something Fair Isaac has kept pretty vague, but luckily only encompasses 10% of your credit score. The types of credit that you use play a major role in building strong credit. One certainty is that you need to develop different trade lines, such as revolving and non-revolving accounts. A solid mix of accounts would be an auto loan, student loan, mortgage and credit cards. Just obtaining credit cards or auto loans by themselves will not push your score to perfection. A Visa, MasterCard or other major accepted credit card is typically better for your score than a department store card.

CREDIT SCORE TIPS:

1. Shop around for your auto loan and mortgage. You have 14 days from your first credit pull to shop as many companies as possible to find the best deal. This will only count as one credit pull, or check. For example, go to 30 banks to get a car loan in 14 days, and it will only count as one credit pull. 2. Check your credit report at least every 6 to 12 months. It doesn't cost anything, and you might find inaccurate information that needs to be addressed. This will also help to curb and to fight identity theft. 3. Call every credit card you have and ask them to lower their rate for you. It doesn't hurt to ask, and you will find that they quite possibly will. I lowered my credit card two months ago from a 19.99% to an 8.99% with one quick phone call. Aran Financial, backed by Edison College, is offering FREE Credit Education Classes for Pulse Magazine readers. Traditional education in high school or college regarding this subject matter is non-existent, even though it impacts every aspect of your life. The usual fee is $99 for the course, giving you "peace of mind that you can afford", lasting a lifetime. Please email or call Danny Gabriel or Brett Donley for class schedules and locations. A donation to cover the costs of holding the class will be appreciated, but not expected. We want to make this class available in order to help Naples residents stay ahead of the current credit crisis. Please mention in your email that you are responding to Pulse Magazine's article.

the peppermint fragrance is a great pick-me-up for the winter blues. By: Kelly Andersen The fa-la-la’s of Christmas have passed, but the weather outside is still frightful! After all the Christmas packages have been opened, I’m sure there is still something you “need” to keep you fashionable! Post holiday shopping is my favorite time of year. The one thing that should top the list of must-haves this season is the classic Burberry cashmere scarf. Most of us can’t afford the trench coat, but just having a piece of this famous plaid will be the spark your wardrobe needs to stay cutting edge! Aside from the traditional red and black tartan, Burberry offers a delightful pastel pink or baby blue plaid to appeal to anyone’s taste. While this scarf is more expensive than other woolen scarves, it is well worth the price tag and will last you a lifetime! My mother has been wearing her traditional tan tartan scarf for thirty years and it looks brand new. My personal style steered me towards the pastel pink plaid so I could match my Burberry rain boots that Santa brought me last year! These scarves are fabulous, and can be worn casually to a football game or for a dressed up night in the city. Trust me, splurge! I don’t know about you, but this time of year my skin needs a little more attention than in the summer months. Luckily, I have discovered two great product lines that renew and start the healing process for any skin damage.
