MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR CAREERS FAIR

This year our fairs are in October to help get you ahead of the game, giving you the chance to meet the employers before students at other Universities. Remember it is never too early to think about when you graduate! PREPARATION IS KEY

ON THE DAY

Research the organisations who are attending by visiting their websites and why not see if they have a Facebook, Twitter or Linked In page you can follow? This will help you to target the most relevant employers on the day and ask appropriate questions.

Although fairs are less formal than interviews, the organisations will still be on the lookout for potential candidates:

Explore the questions that you want to ask, so that you don’t end up just wandering around the stands picking up information, or asking obvious questions. Being remembered as the person who asked interesting and engaging questions can’t be a bad thing! Check our careers calendar for workshops which will help you boost your skills and confidence in preparation for the careers fair. Think about the questions that you want to ask, so that you don’t end up just wandering around the stands picking up information, or asking obvious questions. Being remembered as the person who asked interesting and engaging questions can’t be a bad thing! Consider the type of work that interests you and your skills and experience to date. Employers may ask what you want out of a placement or graduate job and what you could bring to a role.

• Dress smartly; you never get a second chance to make a first impression! • Take copies of a CV (make sure it’s a good one) and why not take along some business cards you can leave with employers? This shows you are serious and prepared and not just there for the freebies. • If someone gives you their business card and invites you to call them for a further meeting, follow it up. It may open the doors to work experience, other opportunities and developing valuable transferable skills. • Don’t forget to do your research and look at the Employer Profiles on page 7 so you know which employers you want to meet at the fair. • Keep up to date with the latest fair news from the Employability Service and exhibitors by following:

@PLYMUNIEMP #PUCAREERSFAIR PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY EMPLOYABILITY

Know your digital footprint! What do you find when you Google your name? Are you happy for employers to see your Facebook photos? Are you tweets appropriate? Is your LinkedIn profile current and professional? Employers increasingly check candidates’ online presence so it is good to be confident in yours!

ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS The questions you ask should depend on what is appropriate to the employer, the research you have done, and what you want to get out of your discussion with them. You need to develop your own ideas, but here are a few examples of questions you might want to ask: • What types of projects are currently being undertaken? • Does your organisation have any opportunities for work experience or part time vacancies? • What motivated you to work for XXX organisation? • What particular skills are you looking for? • Where do you usually advertise job vacancies and how do you like people to apply? • What is your selection process? (Such as assessment centres, interviews, tests) • Do you have any tips for the application process and interview?

GRADUATE ROLE EXAMPLE QUESTIONS: • What training opportunities are available? • How many graduates are recruited each year? • What has happened to the graduates you recruited last year? What are they doing now? • What qualification level do you require? (i.e. 2:1, postgraduate qualification etc.)

PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITY EXAMPLE QUESTIONS: • Does your organisation recruit placement students? • What experience would help a placement application succeed with your recruitment process? • Do you expect graduates to have done some work experience before applying?
