Here are two juvenile books by Northwest writers that have passed the "neighborhood" test-and they're grade A. The first is Mystery of Catesby Island, by Lucile McDonald and IIcleu Ross (Thu1nas Nelsun & Suns). Early- and mid-teeners will enjoy this mystery, which is fast-paced, has bits of philosophy, and good unforced lrnmor. One appealing element of the book is its wonderful atmosphere. Although the action takes place on a I Puget Sound island, there is the feel Iof world-wide adventure in it. The I very, names of the characters have the flavor of distant ports. Sparville, for example. And Aunt Persia! Skylark Farm, by Oregon's Joan L:ckman (Whittlesey House), will appeal to a younger group, beginning with 11-year-olcls and continuing into the eru·ly teens. The main character is a 13-yeai-old girl on Skylark Farm in the Skykomish Valley. There's a rather inysterious boy, horses, a stolen horSe, vanishing n1onejr, and a satisfactory county fair-all of which acids ., up to good entertainment. Pers Crowell's fine illustrations lend interest.
