DESCRIPTION The 34,000 sq u a re foot H i n d e rl i e H a l l i s a t h ree sto ry T-s h a ped b u i l d i n g centered on a N orth -South axis with Ordal H a l l and l ocated o n t h e edge of t h e b l uff t h a t sepa rates t h e Upper Ca m p u s from the Lower Ca m p u s . H i n d e r l i e H a l l fo rms one wa l l of a l a rge c o u rt with Hong H a l l and Kreidler H a l l ; the two L-s h a ped b u i l d i ngs a re located o n e i t h e r side of t h e axis between H i nderJie H a l l and Ordal H a l l . T h is e n s e m b l e of residence h a l l s b reaks u p t h e western p o rtion of t h e upper ca m p u s into d iscrete but con nected o utdoor rooms. H i n d e r l i e H a l l is s h eathed i n a ru n n i ng bond m a s o n ry ve neer and t h e w i n d ows appear to be the o rigi n a l metal fra m e a n d sa s h . The o rigi n a l roofs were fl a t but were rep l a ced with a hip roof i n t h e l a st 30 yea rs. H i n d e r l i e H a l l i s a contri buting structure to the overa l l t ra d itio n a l a rra ngement of the PLU u p per campus. The flat roofed ve rsion of t h i s comp lex wou l d have been eligible for the National Register i n 2007 and would l i kely h a ve been n o m i n a ted due to t h e i r significa n ce a s exa m p les of modern post WW II d esign by a nota ble Tacoma firm. H owever, due to c h a nges i n sentiment and mec h a n i c a l fa i l u re, the roof struct u res w e re c h a nged from fl a t to hip o n all t h ree b u i l d ings. 'By the time t hese a ltered b u i l d i ngs reach t h e 50 year mark they may o n ce a ga i n be e l i g i b l e for n o m i n a t i o n to t h e N a t i o n a l Registe r .

HISTORY O rig i n a l ly named South H a l l when it was b u i lt in 1954, the b u i l d i ng was r e n a m ed H i nd erlie H a l l in 1966 to h o n o r Berent and Ragna H i n d e rl i e . I n 1924 Berent H i nderlie joi ned the staff of PLU a s a J a n itor a n d worked for P L U u nt i l h i s reti rement i n 1955. Origi n a l ly designed a s a women's o n ly d o rmitory, t h e b u i l d i n g h o u sed men d u ri n g the 1 9 8 0 ' s a n d t h e n w e n t c o e d i n 1 9 9 3 . I n 1958, PLU President Seth C l a re n c e a n d M rs. Eastvo l d c e l e b rated thei r 40th wed d i n g a n n iversa ry b y gift i n g a n outdoor i n-gro u n d swi m mi n g pool to t h e school. I t was l ocated between H i n d e r l i e Hall and Eastvold Chapel and was d u b b ed "Seth ' s Pool". I t h a d a b u b b l e sha ped p l a st i, c r o o f that could be erected a ro u n d it d u r i n g bad weather. T h e p o o l was removed when t h e swi m m i n g pool b u i lt next to the gym n a s i u m . H i n derlie H a l l i s representative of t h e l a rge post WW I I e x p a n s i o n that w e n t o n at collegiate e d u ca ti o n a l fac i lities t h roughout the U n ited States. H ,i n d e r l i e H a l l a l so p l ays a key p a rt i n fo r m i n g d i screte outdoor spa ces and m a i nta i n i n g a coh esive c a m p u s ba sed o n ma ssi ng, s i t i n g a n d c o m m o n m a te ri a ls. Th e architect, Lea, Pearson a n d R i c h a rds, was a Ta coma based fi rm com posed of three p a rtners : Cha rles W i n t h ro p Lea, J r. ( 1903 - 1990), C h a r l es T h eo d o re Pea rson ( 1905 - 1994) a n d J o h n G reenway R i c h a rd s ( 1908 - 1985 ) . The offi ce was started in 1937 a n d was the l a rgest firm i n Tacoma for m a n y d e ca d es. Th e fi rm d i d a l most all t h e bu ild ings i n t h e Upper Ca m p u s a n d m a n y i n t h e rower; some e x a m p les i n c l u d e M e m o r i a l G y m ( 1947) a n d Ra mstad H a l l ( 1947).
