Pacific Lutheran University i' located in suburban Parkland, six miles south of Tacoma, 40 miles south of Seattle, and 20 miles north of Olympia. Surrounded by the Cascade and Olym pia ranges, Mt. Rainier, and Puget Sound, PLU's p i c tu r­ esque [42-acre c a m p us is tr uly representa­ tive of the natural grandeur of the Pacific No rthwest. With an enrollment of 3,350 students and a full-time faculty o f 250, le a rning is a p erso nal , interactive process between students and faculty.

OUR

IlJSTORY

Pacific Lutheran University was founded in [890 by a >ro u p of Scandinavian Luthe rans . They were led by Reverend

Bjug Harstad, who became PLU's first presi de nt . In naming the univer ity, these pioneers recognized the important role that a Lutheran educational institution o n the wes t ern frontier of America could p lay in the emerging fu ture of the region. Th ey wanted the institution to h elp immigrants adjust to their new land and fi n d jobs, but they also wanted it to pr odu ce grad u ates who would s erv e church and c om mu nity. Education-and ed u c a ting for service­ was a venerated part of the Scand i n a vi a n traditions from whi c h these p io n e ers c ame . PLU has been closely affiliated with the Lutheran church thro ughout its history. It is now a uni e rs ity of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, owned by the more than s.LX hundred congregations of Region [ of t h e EL The Sc and inavia n Lutheran tradition remains, yet the circle of u n derstand ing has widened. PLU receives international students from more than 20 countries and sends students off to study abroad pro­ grams in over 40 countries around the world. The diversity of the student popu­ lation, course o fferi ngs , and p ers p e cti ves continues to grow. Many influences and individ uals have combined to shape PLU and its r eg io nal , national, and increasi n gl y i nt nnat i on al rep uta tion for te ac hing , service, and

scholarship. A dedicated faculty has been an xtremely important factor. The school has enjoyed a strong musical tradition from the beginning, as well as noteworthy

alumni achievements in publ ic school teaching and administration, uni vers i ty teaching and s c h ol ars h i p , the pastoral ministry, the health sciences and hea l ing arts, and business. At PLU the liberal arts

Ten Simple Steps to Make Your Summertime Easy

1 W HERE TO PA I\K Summer parking is easiest in the Library lot. The entrance is on Wheeler St. across from Trinity Lutheran Church. Parking is also available in other lots on both upper and lower campus. Your car must be regi­ stered with Campus Safety (located in the basement of Harstad Hall on Park Ave.) if you park on campus. Campus Safety will issue a parking permit (no charge) and give instructions and directions on other lots available. ampus Safety also provides a free escort service for aU PLU students during the evening hours. The service includes all PLU facilities and any area within four blocks off campus. For further information, phone: 535-7441.

WHERE TO BUY BOOKS & SUPPLIES Besides selling required textbooks, the P LU Bookstore, located in the University Center, stocks academic supplies at a reduced price, including computers. There is an assort­ ment of reference and general books, lmique clothing, and gifts. Bookstore hours are extended the first two days of each term: 8:00am-6:30pm. Regular hours are 9:00am5 :00pm, Monday-Thursday and 9:00am. 1 2:00 pm, Friday. The Bookstore is not open on weekend during the slimmer.

This course deals with the llse and abuse of drugs in the sports world. [n a clear and concise language we will exa m i ne anabolic steroids and their effects on the human body. While many athletes use anabolic steroids to i m p rove athletic performance, the use of these substances is proving increasingly to be physically dangerous. However, steroid lise is only one aspect of the problem. The wide­ scale use of taking drugs and blood doping is also examined, as well as the use of amp het­ ami nes, cocaine and marijuana, drug testing, treatment p rograms, and aids. Non-degree students. Course Numbering Courses at PLU use the following number system:

1 01 -299. Lower division level 321 -499. Open to both graduate and upper division undergraduates. Such courses may be a part of the graduate program provided they are 110t specific requirements in preparation for graduate study.

500-599. Graduate courses. Normally open to graduate students only. Upper division students may enroll in a 500-1evel course if, during the last semester of the senior year, a candidate for the baccalaureate degree finds i t possible to complete all degree require­ ments with a registration of fewer than 1 6 semester hours o f undergraduate credit. The total registration for undergraduate requirements and elective g.raduate credit shall not exceed six semester hours during any one summer term. A memorandum stating that all baccalaureate requirements are being met dming the semester must be

signed by the appropriate department chair or school dean and presented to the grad­ uate studies office at the time of such regi­ stration. This registration does not apply toward a higher degree unless it is later approved by the student's advisor and/or advisory committee.
