Flourish Like the Flowers

Josephine Nguyen Yr9

If there was anything Aster loved most in the world, it was her flower garden. There was an unspoken rule; the flowers were not to be disturbed if they wanted to flourish. But where there was love, there was hate. If there was anything Aster hated most in the world, it was leaving her flowers unattended. There was a silent fear that one day she'd see her flowers' petals wilting and withered if she didn't pay attention to them.

“Why do you visit me?” Aster asked one morning, tending to her flowers, “if all you do is disturb me and destroy my garden beds?" She scowled at Isla, who was standing on the frail, wooden bench that quivered under her weight. “Because I must come and see what my Aster is doing all day!” “I am not yours, Isla. There is only one thing that has a place in my heart, and that isn’t you.” “Would it kill you, Aster, if you spent a day away from the gardens? Your flowers do not need attention every second of the day.” Isla muttered, rolling her eyes. “This is my sanctum, Isla. My home, my hopes and dreams, the place I thrive.” Aster countered, and Isla rolled her eyes. “Must I remind you that you are a human being, not a flower? People do not flourish in dirt and plants, Aster. The fertiliser must’ve made you lose all sense,” Isla jumped down from the bench, kicking an empty pot plant over as she approached Aster. “I’m taking you to the seaside tomorrow. I will come down here and drag you if I must. Your father would want that.” “My father,” Aster spat, “knows nothing about me." “No, it’s just that you admire flora too greatly. Arrivederci, bella. I will pick you up at eleven.” ~~~ The next day, Aster was tempted to hide away in her room, knowing full well that Isla would come and drag her away. She looked out her window; her carnations were blooming, as were her petunias, and the wisteria trees at the back of the estate were growing nicely. Maybe she could go away from her garden, just this once. Suddenly, fear clutched her heart, twisting through her. “Aster,” a voice called downstairs - her father. “Isla is here to visit you. Come down at once.” A flash of panic raced through her mind. Should she stay and hide, or go with Isla? What about her flowers? What if something happened to them? Did she have separation anxiety? “Aster,” her father shouted again, “hurry up!” “Coming, Father!” She replied, replacing her gardening overalls with a pair of pants and a blouse. Aster rushed downstairs, picked up her sunglasses and hat, and came face to face with Isla at the door. “I told you eleven o’clock, did I not?” Isla smiled, “which means,” she checked her watch. “you’re twenty-four seconds late.” “Oh, hush, Isla. I’m coming with you, aren’t I?” Aster replied. Her father waved them both off, and they hopped into the car. “I’m proud of you, Aster,” Isla said after a moment of silence in the car. “You say you thrive in the garden and with your flowers, but you managed to come with me today.” “I suppose so.” Aster murmured, aware she’d actually made a change in routine for the first time in a while. “You don’t just have to bloom in the garden, bella. You can flourish everywhere.” Isla told her. The flowerbeds may have been where her heart belonged, but the world was her whole garden, and she was ready to flourish.”

The evening sky turned muddy grey, The clouds covered up the sun’s rays, The wind whispered a sorrowful tune, The humans are coming. Maple trees billow in desperation One by one, they danced their final ballet, They hit the floor like shattered glass, The humans are coming. All living creatures went to hide, Their tails hung up and their noses bent down, Their eyes scanned their surrounding around, The humans are coming. Two souls born together, Two souls bound together, Their petals and delicate leaves shivered, The humans are coming. Their roots torn up, Their leaves bent down, Humans are coming, The humans have arrived. Two souls that experience hate and anger. How could they do this to us? How could they cause misery to plants and animals? The humans are here. Time moved slowly, A hand reached forward and grabbed, The souls felt like something was tearing them apart, Life doesn’t always give you what you want. A part of the flowers disappeared, In a crate and onto a truck, The truck drove away and disappeared behind the hills, Life can be hard to see.

LIFE Oneli Gunasena Yr 7

One soul sees darkness and sinks to the floor, All his hope drowns in streams of sorrow, Its leaves cough out dew, Life can send you gloomy weather. The clouds cried The sun hid behind the clouds, The poor soul looked up at the sky with hope, Life needs you to trust it. It starts to bloom, brighter than before, It needs to show pride, It needs to show it can be brave, It can be brave to support its other half, This is a story not real at all, But, think about it, Do you feel something that related to you, Life can’t always give you what you want. The clouds cried, The sun hid behind the clouds, The poor soul looked up at the sky with hope, Life needs you to trust it. It starts to bloom, brighter than before, It needs to show pride, It needs to show it can be brave, It can be brave to support its other half, This is a story not real at all, But, think about it, Do you feel something that related to you, Life can’t always give you what you want.

Experiences from PLC students Duke of Ed really helped me step out of my comfort zone and buil perseverance and diligence. I created so many unforgettable memories during the adventure. The volunteering component allowed me to give back to the community, which was a rewarding experience. The Duke of Ed program has been a really rewarding experience for me, as I have been able to visually track my progress in the skills and physical recreation sections, whilst also reaching out to a broader circle of people in my community. Duke of Ed has taught me a lot about leadership and commitment and has motivated me to do things I wouldn't have tried if it wasn't for the program (e.g. seeking volunteer placements. The skills I've gained are also super applicable for studying at tertiary institutions and other future endeavours. The YAL team

The Hunger Games In the ruins of a place once known as North America, lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

She becomes more open and develops her relationship with others. An example of this is her relationship with her mother. At the start of the book, Katniss does not interact with her mother as much as she does with Prim. But when she is in the arena of the Games, she realises just how important her mother is and how much she cares about her.

This book is narrated from the perspective of Katniss. It takes you through the struggles that she faces, physically and mentally, as she tries to survive the Hunger Games. The book is split into three parts: The Tributes, The Games, The Victors. Each part focuses on different things: the first focuses on the day of the reaping and training, the second focuses on the first half of the Games, and the third focuses on the second half as well as what happens after. The book contains lots of action and adventure and suspense. It keeps readers intrigued and eager to continue, as it is very fast-paced, with plot twists around every corner.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars because I enjoyed reading it and the plot is well thought out. It was easy to follow and there weren't many plot holes. There are two sequels, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, and all three of these books have been turned into four movies with actress Jennifer Lawrence playing Katniss Everdeen. The Hunger Games is suitable for anyone above the age of 13, but before reading this book, keep in mind that there is a lot of physical violence, fighting, and battling involved.

Throughout this book, Katniss flourishes as a person. In the beginning, she keeps to herself and tries her best not to bother others. However, as she progresses through the Hunger Games, she becomes more confident and stronger in everything she does.

Suzanne Collins’ novel, The Hunger Games is a suspenseful, entertaining and highly addictive dystopian novel. It tells the story of a sixteen-year-old girl who has to survive the brutal Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is an annual event held by the Capitol that 12 boys and 12 girls are forced to enter. Each year, all children aged 12 to 18 have to place slips of paper containing their name into a huge glass ball, and the kids who have their name picked out must compete.

By Suzanne Collins

There are only two rules: kill, or be killed. Of the 24 who compete, only one will survive. To win at the Hunger Games you must kill all your opponents, even if they become your friends.

DEGREES IN ASTROLOGY Hi guys! It’s Jing and Evelyn, and in this issue, we will be talking about degrees in astrology! Have you ever looked at a birth chart and wondered what all the weird numbers and symbols were? Well... your natal birth chart is arranged in a 360-degree geometric circle. This circle is divided by twelve segments for each sign, each with a 30-degree angle. The signs are then divided into subdivisions, called decans. In each 30 degree segment, there are three decans of ten degrees each. For reference, attached below is Jingyi’s horoscope. Different degrees of separation are referred to as aspects and degrees of orb. The degrees in your birth chart can not only determine your personality and appearance, but can also determine events in your life, such as your career path, your income, your marriage and more! Most importantly, the degrees in astrology provide the precise timing of crucial events. Each degree in each sign has its own meaning, and remember, astrology is subjective so you can take it however you want. Astrologers refer to critical degrees as the degrees which hold greater meaning and are more potent than other degrees. For Aries, Libra, Cancer, and Capricorn, the critical degrees are 0,13, and 26. For Taurus, Leo, Aquarius and Scorpio, the critical degrees are 8-9, and 21-22. For Sagittarius, Gemini, Pisces and Virgo the critical degrees are 4 and 17. If you find that you have these specific degrees in one of these signs, then it means that the energy of this sign is very dominant and a great focus for you. Furthermore, another important degree in astrology is 0 degrees. This is the purest and most undiluted nature of the sign, which represents innocence. A native with this placement can appear very childlike.

12

Another way to interpret 0 degrees is the rawest stereotype or association you have with a specific sign. A Leo, for example, is said to be a passionate and dramatic individual. A Leo with a 0 degree placement may appear stereotypicla of the sign. Another interesting fact about 0 degrees in astrology is that 0 degrees in cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, Cancer and Capricorn) can prove that one will receive great recognition. This is called the Aries point. As a result of their Aries point gift, individuals with the Aries point have the ability to create an impression and be noticed. An Anaretic Degree, on the other hand, occurs when a planet or point is at 29 degrees of any sign, and it indicates karmic completion related to the energies of that planet or point. This is because the 19th degree of a sign is the very last degree of the sign. Individuals who hold many placements of the 29 degrees are said to be old souls, who have lived many lifetimes already. It signifies that you have lived through the sign in multiple lifetimes, where many lessons were taught. There is no good or bad in astrology, but the 29th degree in a sign is often an indication of physical or mental weakness in a specific area. However, many people with the 29th degree feel as though they are very experienced in life, or have come into life with a strong purpose or values. Overall, the degrees in astrology help us to understand ourselves better and to discover more about your own placements on an online astrology website or you could ask us!

Thank you!
