Heather & Chrissy at the 2009 PLAYGROUND Music & Arts Fest

Modern families love to party and it shows! How funny is this photo of us back in ‘84 at the John’s Pass Seafood Festival? We swear Lionel Richie t-shirts and mullet haircuts were totally in! We thought it would be fun to recreate that image 25 years later, at the first ever PLAYGROUND Music & Arts Fest at Lake Eola. We created a cutting edge event complete with live music, breakdancers, puppet shows, a Mad Hatter Tea Party, a DJ dance party, the Arts Summer Camp Fair, student art exhibits, more than 150 interactive tents, a drum circle and more than 8,000 of Central Florida’s coolest families. Mission accomplished! We had such an amazing time with all of you this year, we’ve already started planning next year’s event. If you think this one rocked, get ready to kick it with us in 2010! The main stage was hosted by local comedienne, Angela Ramos.

Aiguille Rock Climbing Center brought out a rock climbing wall to give kids a challenge.

Children enjoyed activities at each of the tents at the festival. Central Florida Zoo brought out live animals for petting.

Heather’s family drove in from St. Petersburg to support the festival.

Davey Rocker's Barnyard Jam was a hit with their live music & puppet show.

Mayor Buddy Dyer came out to support Central Florida’s newest family festival.

Bringing back the '80s

They say everything comes back around, and boy - were they right. Remember Wayfarer sunglasses? They’re baaaaaaack. I grew up in the '80s playing with My Little Ponies, wearing glittery nail polish and singing along to Madonna. It hit me the other day, as my daughter was holding her stuffed Care Bear while singing along to my Lady Gaga CD, that the '80s are back. Not just in the fashion world, but for our kids, too. Embrace it! You have the chance to literally live out your childhood again through your kids. And as I look at my toes, painted blue, I think it keeps us young. xoxo, Sabrina James Stackable Jellies I wore these back in the day, layering as many as I could fit on my arm. Ahh … Lady Gaga. Her CD, The Fame, has become the soundtrack to my life. The catchy beats and tongue-in-cheek lyrics remind me of my childhood obsession with Madonna’s True Blue album. Your Kid Can

SAVE THE WORLD Written by Sabrina James

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s little Marcus from down the street – and he’s saving the world. Although saving the world may seem daunting to us, our kids, in all their wide-eyed wonderment, dream of growing up to be superheroes. Why wait? Tie on those superhero capes and help them to focus their power on the forces of good. A summer fundraising activity for charity is the perfect way for your kids to make a difference. Involving your kids in the actual choosing of a cause will surely motivate them even more. From saving puppies to curing cancer, there is a local organization that is sure to pull at their heartstrings and ignite their superhero engines. Handing over the check to the organization of their choice will show them that one small child can, indeed, save the world.

Superhero Generator Do too many choices have your Clark Kent-wannabe in a tizzy? Here are some easy superhero options that will have your child on the way to saving the world in no time.

Captain Lemonade

Wonder Washer

Super Selfless

Everyone knows that kids + lemonade stands + hot Central Florida weather = mad cash. Cash, which will benefit the cause of your child’s choice. Now isn’t that refreshing?

With some soap, a hose and a sense of purpose, your little caped crusader can raise money by holding a car or dog wash for your neighborhood. Sounds like good clean fun to us.

If your child is having a birthday party this summer, he can opt to forgo the presents and ask instead for guests to donate to charity. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving.

We were inspired by local superheroes Victoria Petrucelly and Jesse Theobald. These nine-year-olds raised $23,000 for cancer research at their Pink Lemonade Stand with help from their friends at The Christ School.

Mealtime Bliss If dinnertime has been a drag, take a look at what could be preventing a healthy, happy and harmonious meal. Table Talk Did you know the shape of your table actually influences how your family interacts? Although sitting at a circular table reinforces equality and stimulates conversation, sitting at right angles is actually the most beneficial to a family. When sitting at a square table, it is ideal for parents to sit across from each other and for kids to sit across from their siblings to provide the least confrontational interactions. A square table strengthens a sense of unity and encourages unhurried dining. If you already have a round table, you can simulate the energy of a square table by adding a square tablecloth.

Color Consumption You can use color in your dining room to encourage healthy eating. Too much red in a dining room stimulates hunger and speeds up the eating process. It can also cause blood pressure and heart rate to increase. Orange, gold and peach on the ceiling or in table linens will make healthy food appear more appealing. Adding blue dinnerware to your table lowers your blood pressure and encourages slower eating. Be careful not to add too much blue, as it can slow your metabolism. Spotlight on Family Light is one of the most important details in a dining room. Make sure that you have a well-lit dining table that infuses the center of the table with light and envelops the food and the diners. This will give focus to the family and prevent eyes from wandering to distant places. Some natural light is important, but too much can be distracting. Art and Accents A large still life of a quiet nature scene will display a sense of calm that your family needs to slow down and connect. Rummage through your kid’s art pile to find a large still life of nature that your super-talented art student created. Be careful not to hang a still life of food because it will add to overeating.

Bedtime Calm Watch your little one go into the bedroom like a lion and come out like a lamb. Calm Your Child with Color Your kid’s bedroom should help transition his energy from hyper to calm. Add soft colors to the wall to relax the eye and encourage the body to desire rest and sleep. Softcolored rooms also reflect light that encourages morning alertness. On the walls, use soothing colors with peach and cream bases. Add more lively color to drapes, pillows and pictures. Eliminate Electronics Keep computers and televisions out of the bedroom. Not only do they encourage passive entertainment, they also transmit electromagnetic radiation. Children exposed to too much electromagnetic radiation are more prone to insomnia, night sweats, irritability, muscle aches and bedwetting. Make sure any necessary electronics are several feet away from the bed, and if you use an alarm clock make sure it is a battery operated one. Fix it with Furniture In a corner of your child’s bedroom, situate a low, square table, a bookcase with books and baskets filled with quiet activities. The square table will ground your child and encourage endurance in activities. Baskets filled with puzzles, art supplies and books will supply sensory stimulation in the room while encouraging quiet, independent activity. If you have a sleepyhead who needs encouragement in the morning, place a picture across from her bed that reflects sunny and bright images. This will be the first thing she sees in the morning and will help boost her energy. A small rug on the floor next to the bed will also help give a soft start to the morning.

A Place to Bond Put the family back in the family room.

Make Family the Focus When your family room’s furniture arrangement is focused on electronics, the focus for your family will be television and video games. Place couches and chairs in a grouping or circle to encourage conversation and family activities. A round coffee table in the middle with storage underneath will become the nucleus for family oriented activities such as games, puzzles and crafts. Place a fun heavy object on the table like a ceramic bowl the kids made for Mother’s Day. This object will act as “gravity” to pull your attention to the seating area. The Natural Touch What you and your little ones stretch, roll and tumble on in your family room can either help or hinder your activities. Since skin is the largest organ in the body, the texture of your flooring and furniture can have a huge effect on behavior and tolerance. Materials that are natural, like wood flooring, bamboo rugs and cotton fabrics, hold less uncomfortable heat. Using patterns that incorporate natural forms like leaves, landscapes and wildlife will also emotionally support the family and balance any harsh lines from windows and furniture. Color Me Red Adding red to your family room will spunk up romance between you and your honey, and gratify your kids too. Children between the ages of 5 and 19 prefer red to any other color in the rainbow. There is no need to go overboard; the color should be subtly placed to add just a touch of excitement. Incorporate it with red accessories like pillows, lampshades and candles. PLAYGROUND Summer 09

Served in traditional paper cups, the selections at Rainbow Sno-Cones include everything from the usual “rainbow” to crazy creations like Tiger’s Blood. Beware: While lounging out in front of the store enjoying your treat, flying snowballs may be tossed by Mr. Homer, the owner. We like to think it adds to the charm of the place. 3116 Corrine Dr., Orlando 407-896-9105

The Godfather of Wakeboarding Scott Byerly is idolized in his industry. But at home, the man behind the name is known simply as Dad. Intro by Sabrina James Interview by Jana Waring Family Portraits by Katie Meehan Artwork by Son Duong The wakeboarding industry has affectionately dubbed Scott Byerly the Godfather. The founder. The innovator. The star. Featured on FUSE TV and ESPN and having graced countless magazine covers (covered in tattoos and sporting an entire wardrobe of board shorts and oversized t-shirts), this 36-year-old looks like a kid himself. But behind his bad boy image is a down-to-earth family man.

PLAYGROUND’S Jana Waring sat down with Scott and Kim to find out what the Byerly family is all about.

It is no coincidence that Central Florida is now known as the Mecca of wakeboarding – after all, the Godfather grew up here. Living on a lake, right here in Casselberry, spending time doing water sports with his family, cultivated Scott’s talent. From the age of four, he found his calling on the water, surfing and waterskiing. Scott may not get the local credit that Walt Disney does for creating an industry, but he should. Now, talented riders from all over the world move here to pursue their dreams on the countless lakes and waterways that fill our area.

Where did you go to high school? I went to Lyman. School wasn’t my passion. My “education” was being on the water. That is how I learned to be successful. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I had gone to college.

Nestled in the midst of this “scene” is the Byerly’s home on Lake Georgia in Winter Park. Scott shares his home with his wife Kim and three daughters: Chelsea (15), Kirra (8) and Raina (2). Scott met Kim in 1996 and was immediately smitten. He asked her on a date and Kim politely declined. Later he courageously asked her out again. Kim wasn’t used to guys like Scott. At the time, his hair was dyed fire engine red. “He had this crazy colored hair and tattoos. I didn’t date guys like him,” Kim explains. She finally agreed, on one condition: That he dye his hair a different color. Scott obliged, and dyed it dark blue. “It looked black to me,” laughs Kim. “We got pizza, went to Rocky’s Arcade and have been together ever since. I married my best friend.” Scott and Kim have turned the Byerly name into an empire. With the Byerly Toe Jam (an annual wakeskating contest in Central Florida) and the 2009 Byerly Bus Tour, Scott is increasing the awareness of wakeboarding and wakeskating across the country. He’s had his hand in designing signature Byerly versions of board shorts, t-shirts, wakeboards and shoes for well-known brands like O’Neill and Reef. In 2005 he took it one step further with the creation of his own board company – Byerly Boards. Scott has successfully evolved from star rider with raw talent, to hard-core, respected businessman. Scott may seem like an unlikely parent, but it only takes a moment to realize that wakeboarding is not the only thing that comes naturally to him. He was meant to be a dad. And his girls are his most important achievements. Even though he is living a life that every teenaged boy would envy, the legacy this Godfather will leave is happy children who grew up as he did: On a lake, together as a family ... living the dream.

Tell me about your life growing up here in Central Florida? I really just remember being outside all the time with my family especially on the lake. That is what I did my whole life.

What is the significance behind your tattoos? I have my kids’ names on me, and my name tattooed on my back. Those are the most significant. Oh yeah, and I have my wedding ring tattooed on my finger—that’s meaningful, too. [Laughs] My girls are pretty used to the tattoos because I have always had them, but the other kids at their private school always stare at me when I drop my kids off. Whatever. Tell us about your girls… what are they like? Kirra has so much energy and is really athletic. She is on the volleyball team and wakeskates a lot. Chelsea is in high school. She likes hanging out with her friends and her boyfriend. She is almost 16 and is doing what high school kids do. She is the most like a girly girl, even though she likes to wakeboard. She always has her nails and hair done and looks really nice. The little one, Raina, is much more of a handful than the other girls were at her age, for sure. But she’s only two. So you’re the only guy stuck in a house full of girls? I guess technically I am, but a lot of my team riders come and ride at the house. We’re always riding, filming or doing something here. And my 5-year-old English Bulldog Deuce is the other guy in the house. He loves the water. He’s a really good dog. What is the hardest part of being a parent for you? Trying to tell my kids what to do, like the whole, “Don’t do what I did” thing. I wasn’t always the best kid. I also think the boyfriend thing is tough. I know exactly what the guys are thinking and I really want to teach my daughters to respect themselves. I don’t want to be that super strict dad, but … I guess it’s all about finding that balance. I am just going to take it one daughter at a time. Sometimes I feel though, that by having three girls, I am somehow getting paid back for something I did when I was younger. PLAYGROUND Summer 09

Do you think any of your girls will follow in your footsteps? I want them to be involved in the company, Byerly Boards, for sure. But not like what I did with contests and stuff like that. They should focus on education and doing something they are passionate about. But I do want them out there on the water enjoying it. The 2009 Byerly Bus Tour started in May, promoting wakeboarding, wakeskating and Byerly Boards across the country. What’s it like? You wake up to being in a new place every day, new lake, different people. Everyone wants to ride behind the boat, try all the new products and hang with the team and me. That’s pretty much the typical day. Just being out on the water all day. It’s cool to wake up in a new city, new lake, new atmosphere, and everyone’s there for the same reason. What age groups are coming out to ride with you? Last year, we had younger kids, from the age of 7, to guys in their fifties come out. Anyone can do the sport. There are people who have been following me since I first started. They hear that I’m coming to town and turn out just to see me. Then there are people who don’t know who I am. They have a Byerly board because it was at the shop. You get all different types of people.

With the creation of Byerly Boards with Scott Bouchard in 2005, your name has become a brand. How does that feel? It feels really good. I have been in the industry a long time as a rider, and this was the next step for me. It makes me feel good that people still like to see me out there in their towns and in the magazines. Now I am trying to make the best boards and have the best team. It just feels really cool to see my stuff all over the world everywhere I go. I never would have dreamt that I would have all of this. Your wife helps runs the business. What is it like mixing business with pleasure? In marriage, you are partners in everything you do, so it’s only natural to partner with her on the business side. Another event you have coming up is the 2009 Toe Jam right here in Orlando. Can you tell us about that? I used to wakeboard a lot, wakeskating was something I did on the side. Then I started wakeskating a lot more and got into it. So, Sean Dishman and I started The Toe Jam. It’s a wakeskate-only contest that started out at The Projects [a privately-owned lake in Bithlo]. This is our sixth year coming up. It’s grown larger every year, with more and more people riding in it. More tricks are getting landed. It’s even on FUEL TV now. It’s been really good.

Kevin Michael, Editor of Wakeboarding Magazine, dishes on why Scott is known as “The Godfather” of Wakeboarding: “Scott stormed onto the scene In the early 90s with a relaxed “wakeboarding” style that resembled what was happening in skateboarding and snowboarding. He was really focused on grabbing his board while in the air and tweaking his moves into a true art form. That, combined with his long hair and tattoos, created an industry image that drew a lot of people to the sport. As time went on, Scott’s style became universally accepted as the most appealing way to ride and he invented moves that are still some of the most respected. That’s when people started to look at him as a type of 'Godfather to wakeboarding. Outside of his celebrity status and contributions to the industry, Scott’s reputation as a loyal and genuine person has transcended the sport and really added to his legend.”

36

PLAYGROUND Summer 09

How did wakeskating evolve from wakeboarding? You ride on a wakeboard strapped in all the time. It kind of got repetitive. I started wakeskating to get away from it. We always kind of copied skateboarding stuff when we wakeboarded and now wakeskating is more like skateboarding, but in the water. I enjoy wakeskating more, I think. I used to skateboard when I was kid. Wakeskating is more free form. You do fall more, and it requires more practice, but it’s a nice change. Are families welcome to come out and watch The Toe Jam? It’s definitely a family-oriented contest. All of my kids will be there. Half of the kids entered in the contest are under 18 years old. What direction do you see these sports heading? With the economy like it is, people are doing more family stuff. I think we’re going to see a lot more people going on the boat with their kids, which is a good thing since the kids are the future, especially in wakeboarding and wakeskating. As for me, I just want to keep doing the contest, keep it simple, and keep it to the roots. I want to progress the sport and the awareness of it. What is the legacy you hope to leave? I want to be remembered as someone who put everything into a sport he believed in and who was a good father and role model. Looking back, is there anything you would do differently? No way. I like my life just the way it is. If I didn’t have kids, I probably wouldn’t be where I am right now. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am without my wife, that’s for sure. Kim: You’re sweet. [Scott laughs] I’m serious.

Local Byerly Favorites Places to shop: Home Depot and Publix. I don’t have to shop for clothing because I get clothes and accessories from my sponsors. We usually wear O’Neill clothing, the whole family does. I’ll go to the mall, but I don’t really like to. Date Night Spots: We go to the Orlando Magic games a lot for our nights out. The last place we went to dinner alone was the Ravenous Pig, and it was for Valentine's Day. Family Dinner Spots: Fujiyama Sushi on University Boulevard. The girls love sushi. We don’t go out to dinner very much with our toddler, but we do a lot of take out from Outback and Thai Villa. Kirra loves Kobe Steakhouse. Places to go as a family: We enjoy going to Lake Eola. Chelsea really likes to go shopping at the mall. And Raina loves Sea World.

Theme Park: We like to go to the Not So Scary Halloween and the Mickey’s Very Christmas at Disney. It is great to go to the park when the crowds are so much smaller. But the rest of the year, we love Sea World. Place to go unwind: I unwind at home and on the lake with my family, but the beach is probably the only other place that I get to unwind.

Family Travel Destination: We love the Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Texas. But we also went snowboarding a couple of years ago in North Carolina and had such a great time getting the kids to try and ride. PLAYGROUND Summer 09

What’s For Dinner?

Summer is Sizzlin’

BBQ is so much more than a style of food – it’s a way of life. From backyard barbecues with dad grilling, kids playing in the yard and a margarita in your hand to partaking in some of our local BBQ delicacies, it’s all about family bonding time. Whether you fire up the grill yourself or let an expert do the dirty work for you, create some delicious summer memories your whole family will remember every time they encounter that smell.

Local Sauce

Written by Sabrina James

Who would’ve thought that John Rivers, former corporate president turned “Pit Boss,” would turn his BBQ passion into a career? It all started with that oh-so-familiar quest for the perfect sauce coupled with a cause near and dear to John’s heart. He organized a successful BBQ fundraiser for a friend’s daughter who was fighting cancer. It was his turning point. John left his office job to pursue his BBQ dreams. John purchased a commercial smoker, set it up in his garage, and began catering fundraisers and parties. Now, his secret-recipe 4Rivers Barbecue Sauce (which has a cult following and is known for its fusion of sweet and tangy flavors with a smoky spice finish) has catapulted him into BBQ stardom. His website launched in March, selling mouth-watering BBQ delicacies and sauce nationwide. In July, he will open 4Rivers Smokehouse in Winter Park, serving his signature BBQ specialties. Ten percent of all proceeds benefit local schools and organizations. That’s right - 4Rivers is giving back to our community AND making mouths water at the same time. www.4rbbq.com

No bones about it, we are fans of the new and improved rebrand at the downtown and Waterford Lakes locations. With flat screen TVs everywhere for your game-of-choice viewing pleasure, a menu that includes all of your favorite BBQ indulgences and hot donuts with chocolate dipping sauce for dessert, you’re going to need the bibs they offer to avoid any spills or inevitable drooling. www.smokeybones.com

“Slow cooked and served fast” is the motto behind this delicious and moderately priced establishment. The BBQ is insanely delicious, their big yellow drink cups literally have their own fan club, and the unlimited pickles and soft-serve ice cream will delight everyone in your group, not just the preggos. Kids eat free on Mondays, and who wants to cook dinner that night anyway? www.dickeys.com

If you think BBQ isn’t hip, you haven’t been to Wildside in Thornton Park. This neighborhood hot spot combines great barbecue with the feel of a being out on the town. Sit outside and enjoy their BBQ Chicken Crostini or St. Louis Ribs and wash it all down with a cold beer. Come on Friday or Saturday night to enjoy live entertainment while your kids enjoy the steak fries that come with every kids’ meal. www.wildsidebbqorlando.com

If you’re like us, canceling your summer retreat this year is NOT an option (recession or no), but spending money wisely is a definite must. We have an idea: Skip the airfare, shorten the time away from work and take a long family weekend in paradise. Clearwater Beach is only a two-hour drive, but a world away from it all. Written by Heather Reneau No, we wouldn’t recommend you go to just any beach town. This little community along the Gulf Coast has it all when it comes to family fun: Unique activities, restaurants and shops are all within walking distance. You can even jump on the beach trolley for a faster ride and a great adventure for the kiddies. Either way, for a laid-back beach town, Clearwater is the PLAYGROUND destination of choice for a great extended weekend getaway this summer.

Hands-down, the only place for you to stay is the Sandpearl Resort. This brand new property is the only one of its class in the area. Seriously, don’t even bother researching other places. Just stay here. Not only is it the nicest resort for families, it has THE BEST spa in the area, a chic restaurant, a beach bar & grill, the most impressive service we’ve experienced, the perfect location along Mandalay Avenue, and (wait for it...) childcare. We’re telling you, IT ROCKS! So, you can have a killer three days in Clearwater Beach, however, here’s the rule: Traveling time isn’t included. Figure in one travel day on each end of your itinerary and you will have a great little vacation that will be relaxing for you and a blast for the kids.

Day 1 |

Kids Highlight: The “fire eater” at the Sunset Celebration Parents Highlight: The Starbucks that’s in the lobby of the resort We recommend getting your bearings the first day. Explore the hotel, enjoy the totally kidfriendly pool, bond with that other family you’re sure to befriend during your stay, take a dip in the Gulf of Mexico, just let the sand settle in between your toes and start living in the “now.” We know the best part of vacation is the food. And remember we’re on a limited time frame here, so drag the kids out of the pool and head over to Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill for lunch. It’s easily accessed by taking a quick stroll down the beach (heading north). It’s conveniently located next door to the Sandpearl, and is a local favorite. (All savvy travelers know to hang out where the locals go.) Your evening activity is a toss-up, since there are two really cool options. The SandPearl has a killer fire pit right on the beach where families can gather around to cook s'mores and take in the vibrant West Coast sunset. Then there’s the nightly Sunset Celebration (Key West-style) at Pier 60 that is NOT to be missed during your stay. Pier 60 has the biggest sandy playground that we’ve ever seen, and it's covered by a giant pavillion. Street performers, Captain Jack Sparrow, Jamaican-style hair braids, great chotchkies to browse and live music make this a really great (and free) family activity. TRAVEL TIP: If your kids are still at napping age (lucky you), make arrangements to rent a poolside cabana for the day. These luxurious indoor/outdoor living spaces are a great spot for the kids to take a siesta while you enjoy the poolside amenities.

Day 2 |

Kids Highlight: The ferry ride to Caledesi Island Parents Highlight: The pure white "sugar" sand A trip to Caledesi Island will be a unique activity for your day. This Florida State Park was rated the best in the United States in 2008. (Seriously, look it up on www.drbeach.org.) You can only access this natural wonder by ferry or kayak. We recommend letting Sandpearl Resort coordinate the excursion for you, which will include a picnic lunch and your transportation from the hotel. (Sweet!) While you’re there, it’s easy to play “castaway” or enjoy the three-mile nature trail running through the center of the island. After a full day on a secluded, primitive island, it will be nice to go back to the resort and enjoy an awesome dinner at Caretta on the Gulf. This isn’t just any ol’ resort restaurant. It’s been highly ranked as one of the best places to dine in the area, and is trés chic! TRAVEL TIP: Opt for outside seating at dinner, with a bird’s-eye view of the Gulf at sunset.

Day 3 |

Kids Highlight: Touching the sea urchins in Camp Ridley’s aquarium Parents Highlight: The complimentary beer & wine on the pirate ship You might want to cash in your “Kid-Free Card” and let them enjoy a half- or full-day experience at Camp Ridley, another awesome amenity at the Sandpearl. They will love the underwaterthemed kids’ lounge, and enjoy coastal activities with camp counselors. (Shh... Don’t tell them, but it's educational too.) Not only is Camp Ridley available during the day, they are also open on weekend evenings. Score! We highly recommend that you take this opportunity to get in some Spa-Ahhh time for both of you. This very relaxing (and romantic) experience will start with a dip in the co-ed hot tub that’s nestled between the men's and women’s lounges. It’s complete with a plunge shower, if you’d like to take it to the extreme. Then, follow up with a treatment together in the couple’s room. It will be a bonding experience like no other. We’ve saved the best for last. Your evening activity will blow your kid’s mind (and ease your guilt for sticking him in “daycare”). Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Your family will become true buccaneers when the pirate crew hands out hats and (squirt) guns upon boarding. There is pirate face painting, treasure hunting, pirate stories and dancing during this two-hour sail. By the end of the cruise, everyone will be acting like pirates and having an awesome time. TRAVEL TIP: We recommend going on the Sunset Cruise that sails from the intracoastal out to the Gulf of Mexico. You will have front row seats to the sunset and the added bonus of a champagne toast to a great vacation, PLAYGROUND-style. PLAYGROUND Summer 09

Escapein 90 Orlando minutes or less

Hop in the car, crank the tunes and take a trip back to your dating years when getaways were simpler and required much less “baggage.” Road trips are the perfect escape from the everyday (and who are we kidding … the kids). Orlando is surrounded by many quaint and quirky towns just waiting to be explored. So book Grandma, tank up and hit the highway. Written by Kristen Manieri

Eccentric Excursion: Cassadaga . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ETA: 40 minutes Did you know we live in very close proximity to the “Psychic Center of the World?” Cassadaga’s old-world streets are where you’ll find more than 40 mediums, psychics and healers. With roads named Séance Circle and Metaphysical Street, this is a very interesting corner of the world to get lost in. Must Do Desperate times call for desperate measures. If you’ve been wondering what the future might hold (or what your stock portfolio might do), perhaps it’s time to consult the experts at the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp. Check out their website ahead of time to pre-book a session with one of their world-renowned spiritual healers and psychic mediums. www.cassadaga.org Must See Legend has it that spirits can reveal themselves to us as glowing balls of light called “orbs.” Experience this phenomenon during the 90-minute Orb Photography Tour, each Saturday beginning at 8 p.m. $25/person. RSVP by calling 386-228-2880. Must Eat If your psychic experiences put you in the mood for some food and liquid enlightenment, head over to the Lost in Time Cafe (located in the Cassadaga Hotel) for some “Spirit” burgers and real-life characters sure to entertain you. www.cassadagahotel.net Make it Special Arrange a couple’s astrology consultation through the Cassadaga Hotel and Psychic Center. In this one-hour session, local astrologists will consult the stars to chart out your fate. Uh oh… is that another bambino on the horizon? www.cassadagahotel.net

But we think you’ll be surprised to find a ton of delightful day trip diversions on and off the water. Must Do Ever dream about hitting the open road on a Harley? Stormy Hill Harley in Clermont runs a weekend motorcycle course in this ideal locale, thanks to its hilly terrain and lack of traffic. Once certified, easy riders can rent gear and bikes onsite.
