Giornalista di un rotocalco scandalistico, Marcello spera di poter diventare un giorno scrittore serio. Nel frattempo si trova completamente immerso nella “dolce vita” romana, tra avventure sentimentali con un’aristocratica sempre alla ricerca di emozioni nuove, il tentato suicidio di Emma - la compagna che lo opprime con la sua gelosia - e il vano corteggiare Sylvia, celebre ed esplosiva diva dello schermo che si esibisce in un sensuale bagno nella Fontana di Trevi. Poi, la falsa visione della Madonna inventata da due bambini e l’incontro con un raffinato intellettuale, Steiner: Marcello ammira la sua famiglia e quella che crede un’esistenza ideale. Ma Steiner si toglie la vita, dopo aver ucciso i figlioletti. Le vicende esistenziali di Marcello si susseguono senza sosta: il malore del vecchio padre che è venuto a trovarlo, l’abbandono di Emma. Dopo l’ennesima orgia notturna, all’alba gli stanchi e stralunati partecipanti trovano la carcassa di un mostro marino arenatosi sulla spiaggia. “E poi, doveva succedere, il film ormai pronto diventò una cosa di tutti. Deflagrò come una bomba nel febbraio ’60 e il giorno dopo qualcuno si accorse che l’Italia non era più la stessa. Marcello, a journalist of a tabloid, dreams to become a serious writer. In the meantime, is totally immersed in the Rome “dolce vita”, including romances with an aristocrat woman always looking for new emotions, the attempted suicide of Emma - his mistress that crushes him with her jealousy - and the vain courting of Sylvia, a famous American film star and pin-up girl who performs in a sensual bath in the Trevi Fountain. Then, two children lyingly claim to have seen the Madonna and the meeting with a refined intellectual Mr. Steiner, truly the only friend Marcello has: in his home and amongst his intellectual friends, Marcello finds real harmony. But Steiner commits suicide after killing his sons. Besides, the illness of Marcello’s old father who came to see him, the abandonment of Emma: though these events have stunned Marcello profoundly, they have not been enough to transform him. Following yet another orgy night, at dawn the tired and dazed party guests found a monstrous fish stranded on a shore. “And then the film was ready and all we owed it. Like a bomb it exploded in February ‘60 and the day after someone noticed that Italy was no longer the same.
