È il 1955. Stalin è morto da due anni, ma nemmeno il disgelo di Kruščev può evitare che gli amanti dei ritmi jazz e della moda americana vengano perseguitati. Lo studente Mels (il cui nome è l‘acronimo di Marx-Engels-Lenin-Stalin, nientemeno) si trova coinvolto in una di queste spedizioni punitive quando si imbatte nella bella Polya, Polly per gli amici. Inizialmente per conquistarla, ma poi con sempre maggior convinzione, si unisce al suo gruppo di stiljagi, giovani moscoviti come lui che preferiscono passare il proprio tempo libero in un locale che si chiama “Broadway”, un microcosmo catapultato nel cuore della capitale sovietica direttamente dalle strade di New York. Mels (divenuto ora Mel) scopre un mondo nuovo, fatto di vestiti dai colori sgargianti che spiccano tremendamente nel grigiore delle persone “normali”, di musica d’oltreoceano e di Polly. Cacciato dal partito, si consola con il sassofono, che impara a suonare da virtuoso nel giro di una notte. Si fa nuovi amici, fra cui Fred, figlio di un diplomatico, uno dei pochi del gruppo a sapere l’inglese e l’unico che riuscirà ad andare veramente nella amata America. Fred tornerà anche indietro, ma le notizie dalla vera Broadway non saranno così buone... Primo musical prodotto dopo la caduta della Cortina di ferro, il film è stato presentato e accolto con entusiasmo in diversi festival internazionali, fra cui Toronto e Karlovy Vary, e ha fatto incetta di premi NIKA, gli Oscar russi (Miglior Film, Miglior Suono, Miglior Scenografia, Migliori Costumi).

It’s 1955. Stalin has been dead two years, but not even the thaw introduced by Khrushchev can avoid the gangs from Komsomol, the youth section of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, hounding those who love jazz and follow American fashion. The student Mels (the name being an acronym of Marx-Engels-Lenin-Stalin, no less) gets caught up in one of these raids when he meets the beautiful Polya, Polly to her friends. At first he’s just after a fling, but she soon gets under his skin and Mels joins her group of stiljagi, young Moscovites like himself who prefer to spend their free time in a dive called “Broadway”, a tiny piece of New York grafted onto the heart of the Soviet capital. Mels (who has now become just Mel) discovers a whole new world, made of brightly coloured clothes that stand out sharply against the dreadful greyness of “normal” people, transatlantic music and Polly. Expelled from the Party, he finds consolation in his saxophone, which he learns to play to virtuoso standards overnight. He makes new friends, including Fred. Fred is the son of a diplomat, one of the very few in the group who really does speak English and the only one who actually manages to get to the yearned-for America. He even comes back, but the news from the real Broadway is not so good… This is the first musical produced after the fall of the Iron Curtain and has been screened and very well received at several international festivals, including Toronto and Karlovy Vary, and has been awarded a hatful of NIKA prizes in Russia (Best Film, Best Soundtrack, Best Set Design, Best Costumes).
