Nel corso della sua storia ormai lunga (21 edizioni), e a onor del vero anche ricca di tante belle soddisfazioni, il nostro Festival ha dimostrato di sapere sempre superare i momenti di difficoltà incontrati strada facendo (e ce ne sono stati...) e sempre è riuscito a presentarsi con puntualità all’appuntamento annuale di gennaio con il proprio pubblico, con la città e il mondo degli appassionati di cinema e sempre – compatibilmente con le risorse a propria disposizione e con la qualità della produzione cinematografica dell’annata presa in esame – ha saputo non deludere le attese. Mi auguro che ciò si ripeta anche quest’anno, nonostante i non pochi problemi che hanno pesato come non mai sul nostro lavoro di preparazione: un budget in parte ridotto rispetto all’edizione precedente, qualche nuova incertezza per il futuro derivata dalle misure di economia previste per il bilancio del 2010 dalle leggi finanziarie degli enti pubblici che ci sostengono, ma soprattutto il trauma della chiusura definitiva (per destinazione ad altro uso) di un Cinema storico della nostra città, l’Excelsior, che con i suoi due schermi e i suoi quasi settecento posti, ha costituto fin dalla prima edizione del nostro Festival la sede primaria per la programmazione ormai necessariamente articolata, per ricchezza di proposte, su quattro sale. Per noi è stato questo un evento drammatico, che ancora una volta ci ha messo di fronte all’annoso problema della mancanza a Trieste di spazi di spettacolo calibrati sulle necessità di un festival e all’inadeguatezza delle strutture di questa città che con indifferenza dà vita a tanti festival cinematografici senza preoccuparsi di dotarli di un ‘luogo’ destinato a un loro dignitoso accoglimento, come invece è successo altrove nella nostra Regione, grazie alla partecipazione diretta degli enti locali. Superato il disorientamento della insufficienza logistica, abbiamo fatto di necessità virtù, ridimensionando un po’ il programma di questa edizione, senza però snaturare l’identità della manifestazione. Abbiamo concentrato la programmazione nelle due sale (Cinema Ariston e Teatro Miela) che affiancavano l’Excelsior nelle edizioni precedenti e dove da sempre ci siamo sentiti di casa, perché offrono la garanzia di una collaborazione operativa scrupolosa e di fiducia.
During the course of its now substantial history (21 editions), a rich succession of events that has given us great satisfaction, our Festival has shown itself always able to overcome moments of difficulty encountered on the way (and there have been plenty…), and it has always raised the curtain punctually in early January for its public, the city and world of film enthusiasts. To the extent of its available resources and the quality of the film production of the year under examination, it has always succeeded in meeting expectations. I hope that the same will be true this year, despite the many problems that have weighed as never before on our preparatory work: a lower budget than for last year’s edition, some doubts concerning the future deriving from the belt-tightening measures planned for 2010 by the public authorities that support us, but above all by the blow caused by the definitive closure of a historic cinema in our city, the Excelsior (which will now be used for other activities); with its two screens and almost 700 seats, it has been the main venue for our Festival since the very first edition, even though the necessarily complex and rich programme latterly required the use of four auditoria. For us, this was a dramatic event, which once again put us face to face with the problem of the lack in Trieste of spaces appropriate for a festival, and the inadequate nature of infrastructure in a city that nonchalantly gives birth to many film festivals without bothering to endow them with an appropriate ‘venue’, as instead occurs elsewhere, even in our own region, thanks to the direct participation of the local authorities. Having overcome the difficulties of the logistical shortfall, we have made a virtue of necessity, by downsizing this edition’s programme to some extent, without, however, distorting the identity of the event. We have concentrated the programme into the two auditoria (Cinema Ariston and Teatro Miela) that were used along with the Excelsior in preceding editions, and in which we have always felt at home, as they offer the guarantee of a scrupulous and trustworthy working collaboration.
