STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

UD TRUCKSGROWING WITH THE REGION

UD Trucks has registered impressive growth for two consecutive years in the Middle East, East, and North Africa (MEENA) region, with sales of heavy-duty trucks up by 35% in Qatar and 32% in Saudi Arabia. The Japanese truck manufacturer is ready for the surge in market demand. Plant & Equipment’s Munawar Shariff speaks to Mourad Hedna, President UD Trucks MEENA, about the commercially rewarding past two years and the company’s consistent focus on sustainable business operations.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY 18

The Middle Eastern truck market is undergoing a transformation due to several factors, including a growing emphasis on sustainability, the adoption of new regulations by regional governments, and a rising need for digital solutions. Specifically, there is a greater demand for trucks that provide better fuel efficiency, uptime, and lower total cost of ownership. However, this shift is also being met with challenges such as a shortage of skilled drivers and increased market demand.

In response to sustainability concerns, many companies are seeking more environmentally friendly trucks that can reduce their carbon footprint. New government-enforced regulations to enforce emissions control and improve road safety are being implemented across the region.

Fleet managers are seeking to optimise operations and as always minimise cost so telematics and other digital solutions are on top of their list of requirements. Economies everywhere are enduring rapidly expanding constraints from logistics, raw materials, fuel costs, and other factors. This is leading

businesses to explore more cost-efficient ways to scale their operations without parting with quality.

UD Trucks has a variety of truck options available for a range of budgets with competitive specifications, such as Escot Automated transmission, higher tonnage amongst other choices which are comparable to those of European trucks which have been the primary preference for a number of industries in the Middle East region.

The brand has also successfully expanded into various segments, including construction, logistics, and waste management, as well as entering other critical sectors in the region such as irrigation vehicles in Kuwait, water tankers, vacuum trucks, and jet cleaners in Iraq, and a leading waste management project in Abu Dhabi. This success is attributed to the company’s focus on innovation, customer satisfaction, and understanding of the local market’s needs and trends.

Heavy-duty and waste management trucks

Rapid urbanization, driven by increasing populations, has resulted in a significant increase in waste production, making

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY www.PlantAndEquipment.com 19

waste management a critical issue that requires collective effort from various functions, including government agencies and businesses.

UD Trucks in the last two years has made a dedicated focus on expanding operations in emerging markets where there is a growing demand for heavy-duty trucks and specialized trucks for waste management and construction. This has led to a successful year (2022) in terms of sales volumes.

Furthermore, the company has proven its reliability in the waste management segment, resulting in repeated loyal customers.

UD Trucks is providing specialized trucks and services to the waste management and construction sectors in the UAE. LOADS OF POTENTIAL

Komatsu’s Yuki Sugiya and Al-Bahar’s Samer Ismail tell Plant & Equipment what it takes to supply wheel loaders capable of delivering the Middle East’s growing portfolio of megaprojects.

24 MIDDLE EAST NEWS - WHEEL LOADERS

When it comes to completing construction activities with power, speed and efficiency, there is no better tool than the wheel loader. With arm-mounted buckets capable of scooping and carrying large, heavy materials from A to B, these machines have been a common sight on construction sites the world over since time immemorial.

According to research conducted by DATAINTELO, the global wheel loader market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5% from 2022 to 2030. And thanks to the number of megaprojects currently underway in the Middle East, these units are only likely to become more prevalent over the coming years.

While large-scale developments across the region are utilising some of the most advanced construction technology on the planet, their delivery will not be possible without the triedand-tested brute strength offered by the humble wheel loader. This is clearly welcome news for the world’s leading equipment manufacturers, many of which are anticipating increased demand in the Middle East after a turbulent few years.

Yuki Sugiya, Product Marketing Manager at Tokyoheadquartered machinery manufacturer Komatsu, says: “The industry has been through a period of severe conditions,

including increases in the cost of raw materials and transportation-related disruptions. Yet despite these challenges, Komatsu has succeeded in maximising its supply volume to the Middle East region while delivering continued support to customers through its extensive aftersales service network.”

Similarly, challenging market conditions have not prevented Al-Bahar from enjoying a purple patch. Samer Ismail, Product Manager for Earthmoving and Excavation at Caterpillar’s exclusive dealer for the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, tells Cameron Hubbard: “Despite high levels of competition across the region, demand for CAT machines has remained strong, meaning that Al-Bahar’s 2022 results exceeded our expectations.”

Ismail explains that Al-Bahar’s order book has been boosted by strong construction activity spanning the GCC. “There

have been lots of new projects released recently across a broad range of sectors, including, but not limited to, oil and gas, infrastructure, roads and highways, and rail developments,” he says.

Sugiya agrees, explaining that prominent megaprojects such as NEOM in Saudi Arabia are driving increased demand for wheel loaders. In relation to Komatsu’s WA380 and WA470 units, which he describes as core machines in the Middle East market, he notes: “These models are classified as mediumsized wheel loaders, which means they boast a wide range of applications - not only on construction sites but also for quarrying and agricultural projects.”

Commenting on the Caterpillar models most sought after among Al-Bahar’s GCC customers, Ismail says: “The CAT 966 is in highest demand at present. Features such as its efficiency, productivity and speed make it the perfect fit for many end users operating in the Middle East.”

It seems that the challenges posed by the global pandemic and subsequent geopolitical crises in other regions have not been sufficient to dampen the Gulf’s appetite for wheel loaders. Both Komatsu and Al-Bahar are confident that orders for these versatile units will continue to rise throughout 2023 and beyond.

“Thanks to newly announced projects across the region, Al-Bahar is anticipating high demand for Caterpillar wheel loaders for the foreseeable future,” explains Ismail.

Sugiya concludes: “We expect the requirement for Komatsu wheel loaders to continue to increase steadily in the Middle East. We will make every possible effort to provide high levels of support for our regional customers while meeting this demand.” .

ZFM PURCHASES THIRD ECO CONCRETE BATCHING PLANT

The new ECO90 joins the existing ECO30 and ECO50 machines that belong to Z For Mining

.

34
AFRICA NEWS

Following its recent purchase of an ECO90 stationary concrete batching plant, a Mali-based contractor now owns three of the four units that make up the Eurotec ECO range. Z For Mining (ZFM) has been an enthusiastic advocate of Eurotec machinery ever since it acquired its first model, a second-hand ECO30, from a local contractor in 2013. The firm, which offers contractual services such as road construction and civil works for crushers, thickeners, and mills for mines around the West African nation, quickly put the facility to work, producing all of the concrete necessary for the SOMISY gold mine extension.

Soon after, ZFM purchased a brand-new ECO50 model, which was also placed in the Syama gold mine to aid in the shotcreting of subterranean tunnels. The daily output of both the ECO30 and the ECO50 fluctuated between 10-100m3 in response to project requirements and client requests.

Recently, ZFM acquired a brand-new Eurotec ECO90. Located in the Mali capital, Bamako, this factory has already commenced operations in January 2023, delivering ready-mix concrete to local contractors - many of whom will be involved in supporting the statewide effort to enhance public housing development.

Pinpoint accuracy

With an output of up to 90 m3/hour with mixer size at 2m3 per batch, the ECO90 features a cement weigher and water weigher, both of which are accurately metered using load cells. Optional additive weighers can also operate in conjunction with Eurotec’s in-house developed ECS process-control system software. The ECS program runs on a user-friendly Windows OS and helps to produce a precise and consistent blend. The robust steel structure and thick interior abrasion-proof linings of the ECO90’s twin-shaft mixer ensure durable performance while mixing particles of up to 150mm in diameter.

Transportation is both easy and economical. After arriving onsite, they can be quickly installed as they need little or no foundation. The aggregate bins are designed to enable materials to be loaded effortlessly, with minimal ramps. This high level of functionality, with simple operation ensuring quality concrete production, is a key advantage of the affordable Eurotec ECO series – and was instrumental in attracting ZFM’s repeat business.

Nice and easy does it every time

Lintec & Linnhoff’s responsive and intelligent approach to customer support helps operations run smoothly for ZFM.

“Beginning with our very first machine, we were very impressed with how easy it was to use the Eurotec batching plants,” says Zeidan Zeidan, Managing Director, ZFM. “Nevertheless, with our long experience and strong reputation in the construction sector, it is vital that we continue to deliver the best-possible service to our clients, and therefore we add extra value by hiring expat operators to oversee production.

“These operators have been highly trained in the art of producing concrete in the optimum way, as well as efficiently carrying out preventive maintenance to ensure our plants always remain operational and ready to serve,” explains Zeidan.

Both online and in-person customer service ensures that on the rare occasion issues do arise with the plants, they are swiftly identified and resolved. Seamless parts logistics, experienced technicians and a customer-first philosophy combine to ensure productivity and profitability remain at their maximum for the customer

“The easy contact and communication with the Lintec & Linnhoff team, and in particular the readiness of the technical team to assist in the event of any issues was another major factor in our decision to buy additional Eurotec models,” says Zeidan. “Will we ever finalise our collection with the ECO120, the biggest model in the range? Only time and infrastructure plans will tell.”.

ZERO EMISSION PARTNERSHIP

First Quantum Minerals and Hitachi Construction

Machinery have established a collaboration to accelerate the development of sustainable mining solutions at First Quantum’s flagship mining operations in Zambia.

AFRICA NEWS 36

In accordance with a Letter of Intent (LOI), Hitachi Construction Machinery will deliver the first of its rigidframe, full-battery dump trucks by the end of FY2023 for technological feasibility tests at First Quantum’s Kansanshi copper-gold mine operations, including the S3 expansion, which is slated for commissioning and first production in 2025. The battery dump trucks are equipped with an ABB battery, on-board charger, and supporting equipment.

“Hitachi Construction Machinery and First Quantum have a close and respectful working relationship - since their first equipment purchase in 2004 - and we are honored to cement this further through ongoing collaboration and support with the signing of this LOI,” says Sonosuke Ishii, Senior Vice President and Executive Officer, President of Mining Business Unit for Hitachi Construction Machinery.

Milestone partnership

This partnership represents a significant milestone for both companies. Hitachi Construction Machinery will be accelerating the validation of its zero-emission mining product

as part of its technology roadmap while First Quantum will be progressing towards reducing its operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieving its long-term sustainability goals by applying this battery-electric technology at one of its largest mine sites.

“Together with in-pit crushing and conveying and electric drilling, First Quantum saves an estimated 100,000 tonnes of CO2 a year across our Zambian operations, while delivering improved productivity, cost savings and health and safety benefits,” says John Gregory, Director of Mining for First Quantum Minerals.

Hitachi Construction Machinery and First Quantum have a long-standing relationship that will be further strengthened through this LOI and Proof of Concept (POC). The Kansanshi mine is ideally suited to these trials due to its existing trolley assist systems, which align with development of battery dump trucks. First Quantum currently operates 41 Hitachi Construction Machinery (diesel) trolley trucks at Kansanshi, meaning much of the required infrastructure for the battery dump truck is already in place.

AFRICA NEWS www.PlantAndEquipment.com 37

“The battery dump truck represents the future, not only for the Hitachi Construction Machinery Group but for the mining industry as a whole, and we are pleased to establish this proving ground on an active mine site and work with First Quantum on advancing this zero-emission solution,” explains Ishii.

Collaboration with ABB

Hitachi Construction Machinery’s battery dump truck, developed in partnership with ABB, generates power using onboard energy storage and trolley systems. Via a pantograph, the battery dump truck connects to overhead power lines, drawing power to allow the truck to run. At the same time, the generated energy is used to charge the battery system. This is separate to the regenerated power from the retarder braking system which will generate a high level of charge during haul road descent.

“ABB is delighted to continue its collaborative partnership with Hitachi Construction Machinery through the supply of highly energy-efficient DC/DC converters, fitting state of the art traction batteries forming together the most efficient package to electrify rigid dump trucks,” says Fabiana Cavalcante, Head of eMobility for ABB’s Traction Division. “Together, we look forward to advancing our co-creation efforts to develop solutions that enable all-electric mine operations and support customers like First Quantum in the achievement of their sustainability ambitions.”

Proven tech

By transferring a proven technology from its present trolley truck system to the battery dump truck, Hitachi Construction

Machinery has been able to accelerate the development of its product to market. The retrofittable system design is also an added advantage, allowing current diesel truck fleets to be converted in the future to utilize the battery system, offering scalable fleet capability, minimal operational impact, and greater value for customers such as First Quantum.

First Quantum’s fleet of Hitachi Construction Machinery equipment includes 39 EH3500ACII and two EH3500AC-3 rigid dump trucks across its mining operations in Zambia, as well as several construction-sized machineries across global operations. A further 40 EH4000AC-3 dump trucks equipped with the latest HCM/Bradken robust tray designs are on order for first delivery to Kansanshi in 2023, to support its S3 expansion project as it’s scaled up. Six new EX5600-7E (electric) excavators equipped with Bradken Eclipse buckets and incorporating loss tooth detection technology are also to be supplied, demonstrating the company’s long-term commitment to reducing GHG emissions across its operations.

Continued collaboration through this battery dump truck trial is expected to directly contribute to ongoing optimization of technology, infrastructure, safety and onsite deployment strategies and processes for mining sector benefit as we approach a future of energy transition and increased demand for low-carbon equipment.

Beyond the mine site, the partnership is expected to facilitate significant investment in Zambia to deliver social and economic benefits. An in-country engine repair facility is planned for establishment, supported by both companies, which will provide an increase in employment and skills development opportunities within the local community..

THE ROAD TO BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE

LiuGong and High Power Equipment outline the important role their motor graders are playing in the improvement of Africa’s road transport infrastructure.

AFRICA NEWS - MOTOR GRADERS 40

Few would deny that there is room for improvement when it comes to Africa’s highway infrastructure, both in terms of quantity and quality. Data published by the World Bank shows that average road density on the continent is just 20.4km per 100km2. Only 25% of these roads are paved and poor maintenance represents a persistent problem.

This situation has led to a number of disadvantages, including higher export costs and slower transit times between locations. Fortunately, equipment experts understand that this is both a challenge and an opportunity. Manufacturers, dealers and contractors are working together to supply tools capable of improving Africa’s transport links, and motor graders are leading the charge.

AFRICA NEWS - MOTOR GRADERS www.PlantAndEquipment.com 41
Yi Li, General Manager at LiuGong Africa and Middle East.

The value of the global motor grader market stood at $30 billion in 2021, according to research published by Mordor Intelligence, and is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.7% during the period 2022-27. Many of these new units are likely to be deployed in Africa, which will come as welcome news to manufacturers and their dealers – especially given the market uncertainty that resulted from the global pandemic and subsequent geopolitical crises.

Yi Li, General Manager at LiuGong Africa and Middle East, tells Plant & Equipment: “LiuGong’s overseas markets have achieved very good results in the past year, and Africa is no exception. We were pleasantly surprised to see that, in addition to

increased orders for motor graders, the performance of our accessories has been even better with a year-on-year sales increase of 181%. This demonstrates that the quality of our products, logistics and services has been recognised by our customers. It’s been a tough time, but LiuGong has tough equipment and a tough mindset.”

As has been the case for many dealers, High Power Equipment Africa (HPE Africa), the exclusive distributor of Hyundai Construction Equipment in Southern Africa, has also experienced a turbulent period of late. Ross Collard, Managing Director, says: “The past couple of years have been riddled with challenges. South Africa has had to deal with a range of difficulties, including systemic supply chain disruptions, rampant inflation and the beginnings of a global recession – all of which have been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.

“The demand for motor graders is slow at the moment,” he adds. “We have, however, noticed that there has been an increase in market activity over the past 12 months.”

While it is certainly encouraging to note that Africa’s motor grader segment is showing signs of recovery, it will be impossible to meet fresh demand without productive, efficient and reliable machines that are fit for purpose. Wei Haifeng, Product Application Expert at LiuGong Africa and Middle East, tells Plant & Equipment that the 4215D and 4180D are the manufacturer’s most popular motor grader models in the region at present.

42
AFRICA NEWS - MOTOR GRADERS
Ross Collard, Managing Director at High Power Equipment Africa (HPE Africa).

“The 4180D, which won the Red Dot Industrial Design Award in 2019, has a five-pillar cab that gives the operator a 324° view, providing full visibility of both the left and right blades,” explains Wei. “Its one-piece hood opens to a 50° angle, offering superb accessibility and plenty of space to work.”

Li adds: “Road engineering and mine transportation are currently driving greatest demand for LiuGong motor graders in Africa. For highways, our star models are the 4180D and 4215D, whereas the heavy-duty 4230D is ideal for the maintenance of roads on mining sites.”

HPE Africa supplies just one motor grader to its customers: the Hyundai HG190. However, as Collard points out, the model is a great fit for typical applications on the continent. “This robust machine features a power rating of up to 142kW, an operating weight of 15.6 tons and a 4,268mm moldboard,” he explains. “Its turbocharged Cummins engine offers high productivity and low fuel consumption, while its durable mechanical inline fuel injection system provides precise throttle control. As a result, this unit is capable of delivering both speed and power, and the optimal curvature of its moldboard moves all soil types quickly and efficiently.”

So, what are LiuGong and HPE Africa’s expectations for 2023? Are we likely to witness an uptick in demand for motor graders among customers in Africa?

HPE Africa’s Collard remains cautious about the segment’s short-term prospects, commenting: “Local markets will

continue to experience challenges due to the volatility of the South African rand, load-shedding and reduced economic growth. All of these factors will have an effect on the sale of motor graders.”

LiuGong’s Wei, on the other hand, appears optimistic about the coming year as he and his colleagues look to capitalise on the regional launch of a popular model.

“At present, the 4260D is available in China, Indonesia and Russia, and we are planning to introduce this motor grader to Africa this year,” he concludes. “Equipped with greater power and traction, the unit will be an effective heavyweight helper for customers in this region.”.

HYUNDAI CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT BEGINS OPERATIONS OF ITS PARTS DISTRIBUTION CENTER

Hyundai Construction Equipment announced that it has recently completed and officially started operations of its Parts Distribution Center (PDC) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The PDC will serve as a logistical center for construction equipment parts such as excavators and wheel loaders. Additional Hyundai Construction Equipment PDCs are now placed in significant sales markets such as the United States, China, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, and Brazil.

The PDC located in Jakarta will be Hyundai Construction Equipment’s ninth PDC, responsible for over 9,000 parts. With the new PDC, the time consumed to procure parts will reduce substantially from five to two days. The delivery period for regular parts orders will also expand from once to twice a month, enhancing convenience for customers.

The company will also be providing more financial support to expand local sales. Hyundai Construction Equipment established a partnership with KB Capital last January and released an installment finance product in Indonesia with low interest rates for those purchasing construction equipment.

Hyundai Doosan Infracore is also planning to build a sales entity in Jakarta late this month to create a sales network that will help target local markets. Along with building its own PDC in May to enhance its parts procurement capabilities, the company plans to create a collaborative equipment parts system with Hyundai Construction Equipment for improved customer satisfaction and brand value. Hyundai Doosan

Infracore also plans to participate in the international mining equipment exhibition, Mining Indonesia, which will be held in September 2023, to showcase its new brand DEVELON.

The reason Hyundai’s construction equipment business is putting this much effort into the region is due to the market value Indonesia possesses. The Indonesian market is a large market in Asia, selling an average of more than 9,000 units per year for twelve consecutive years from 2010 to 2022. It is also expected to sell around 15,000 machines during the upcoming five years.

Hyundai Construction Equipment is maintaining its growth momentum in Indonesia, with a revenue of KRW 76.2 billion in 2022, a 54% increase over the previous year, while Hyundai Doosan Infracore also recorded a revenue of KRW 102 billion, its highest revenue since entering the Indonesian market..

It is a multi-purpose crane suitable for a wide range of vertical and horizontal lifting jobs that can be performed safely and precisely even at high speeds.

The dodecagonal V12-Power boom profile is used in EFFER’s latest loader cranes. Combined with a JIB it offers extra vertical and horizontal reach. The EFFER iQ.950 HP dimensions and weight makes it suitable for installation on several trucks.

The precision and safety of the crane are enhanced by the SPACEevo control system, which provides advanced functions for veteran and novice operators alike. The lifting capacity can be increased with the VSL+ (Variable Stability Logic-plus) function that uses the load as an active part of the stabilisation setup, while the DLC-S (Dynamic Load Chart) reduces the time it takes to configure the stabilisation setup. .

IVECO, PLUS BEGIN PUBLIC ROAD TESTING OF THEIR HIGHLY AUTOMATED TRUCK IN GERMANY

ASHOK LEYLAND, RIL UNVEIL INDIA’S FIRST HEAVY-DUTY TRUCK WITH HYDROGEN COMBUSTION ENGINE TECHNOLOGY

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) & Ashok Leyland unveiled India’s first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) powered Heavy Duty truck. The vehicle was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangalore during the India Energy Week.

IVECO, an Iveco Group commercial vehicle brand, and Plus, a global provider of highly automated driving and autonomous driving solutions, announced that the companies are starting public road testing of their jointly developed next generation highly automated trucks in Germany.

As a part of the public road testing, the companies will collect road data to validate their autonomous truck’s operations and start designing the potential factory production. The PlusDrive-enabled IVECO S-WAY truck is designed to improve safety, efficiency, driver experience, and to provide a more sustainable option for fleets.

“Germany is a leader and trendsetter in autonomous driving, so we are excited to launch our public testing program in a country that has long embraced technology innovation and the life-changing impact of safety solutions like highly automated trucks,” said Marco Liccardo, Chief Technology & Digital Officer, Iveco Group. “This is an important phase in our plans to bring highly automated trucks to market.”

The public road testing starts in Germany, and will expand to Austria, Italy, and Switzerland in the coming months. Each country’s unique roadways and driving conditions will expose the highly automated truck to a broad range of terrains, road gradients, weather conditions and driving scenarios. This will help to continuously expand the capabilities and features of Plus’s autonomous driving technology.

“Real-world experience is an invaluable part of the testing and validation of our technology as we prepare our autonomous driving product for commercial deployment in Europe,” said Shawn Kerrigan, COO and Co-founder at Plus. “Given that Germany alone faces a shortage of 60,000 truck drivers, our highly automated driving solution, PlusDrive, will help improve road safety, sustainability, and driver recruitment and retention issues confronting fleets in the region.”.

Ashok Leyland, the Indian flagship company of the Hinduja Group and India’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, along with RIL, has been developing this unique technology over the past year and has been under test since August 2022.

The Ashok Leyland H2-ICE heavy-duty truck range (1935 Ton) is powered by Hydrogen, a renewable and clean energy source, maintaining overall architecture similar to a conventional diesel-based combustion engine thus helping quicker migration to cleaner energy sources at relatively lower cost delta.

“Ashok Leyland has always been a pioneer in introducing state-of-the-art technologies in the commercial vehicle space,” said N Saravanan, President and Chief Technology Officer, Ashok Leyland. “Working with RIL, we have once again demonstrated our technological leadership, and our commitment to the Clean Mobility Mission.”

Ashok Leyland has been a forerunner in introducing cutting-edge technologies, and had recently demonstrated its futuristic vehicle range, powered by electric and hydrogen options at the Auto Expo 2023..
