CONTENTS Hello,

Readers!

When I was seven years old, I received a green parakeet for Christmas. I don’t recall having ever asked for a parakeet. Mature for my age, I had likely wanted something more practical, specifically The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for the Nintendo Game Boy. But I got the bird, whom I named Ralph. Ralph’s credits were his festive plumage, ability to squawk very

loudly, and habit of tip tapping on his perch while the radio played. His demerits were his penchant for spitting seeds as far as they could go, fondness for night squawking, and unrelenting need for more and more newspaper pages. After a couple months of his tenure, my parents decided that Ralph’s work was no longer needed. Ralph was resituated to the nearby convalescent home to entertain its residents, where very much in spite of the spirit of convalescence he promptly died. This issue of

Santa Tom by David Scheller

Very few men among us are blessed with the robust physique, the saintly good looks, and the spirit of benefaction that it takes to serve as one of Santa Claus’ ambassadors from the North Pole. Fortunately for Santa Tom, he had already been gifted with the whole package when he first received his calling to portray the jolly old elf several years ago. “One day in spring, the owner of a local furniture store I shop at asked me if I would be Santa at a promotional event he was planning on Thanksgiving weekend,” Santa Tom reminisced. “That was the day I quit shaving -- and that’s all it took to complete my look.” “The first furniture store event was wonderful,” Santa Tom continued. “It was all complimentary, so a lot of kids got their pictures taken with Santa that year who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. This became a regular thing for the next seven years, where I built up a nice little following. I was asked by more and more businesses to be their Santa during the holiday season, and before long I was putting 2,000 miles on my sleigh every year making appearances at any kind of place you could imagine, from stores to houses to country clubs to daycares to nursing homes.” “Little kids’ reactions to meeting Santa run the full gamut of emotions. In our society where children are taught to be afraid of everything, it’s only natural that some should shrink away when they’re told to friendly up to the big, strange bearded man who just walked into the room. I’m lucky to be able to bring my wife Christmas Carol wherever I go, who brings a grandmotherly presence that puts wary kids at ease so they can warm up to Santa for a picture. No matter how a kid feels about Santa, though, we always get a great photo -- I’ve mastered the art of photobombing!”

Carol and I were having dinner at a pizza place one night when this little guy, about five years old, spotted me from across the dining room. You can always tell the look on a kid’s face when they realize they’ve crossed paths with Santa. Not long afterward, a woman came up to me and

asked if her grandson, Bentley, could ask me a question. I said of course he could.” “Bentley walked up to my table, eyes as wide as saucers, and asked me if I still brought toys to children who are already in heaven. I said of course I do -- that Jesus said ‘Let the little children come to me,’ so they’re always taken care of wherever they are. Bentley then showed me pictures of the fish he caught with his grandpa, and I showed him pictures of my reindeer.” “People in nursing homes are some of Santa’s

other biggest fans. Some of the ladies there, especially the ones whose Alzheimer’s has made them a little less inhibited, think nothing of asking Santa to come back with them to their rooms. They don’t even use a pick-up line! I’m always very flattered.” “My greatest joy is meeting with the sick and the handicapped. They’re the most precious souls. When I visit children’s hospitals, the little hearts make drawings and gift wrap boxes of tissue paper to give to me as presents. I see one young lady every year, who can’t talk or sit upright, but she knows and loves Santa.” “The brightness that you get to create by being

The

Raptor by David Scheller

Contrary to popular opinion, the Cold War, the energy crisis, and Nixon’s resignation were not the most significant stories of the day back in 1974. Rather, it was the startling decline of America’s wild raptor population, best exemplified by the disappearance of the peregrine falcon everywhere east of the Rockies and the near extinction of the bald eagle. A future without creatures so captivating to the imagination and vital to our country’s ecology would have been very bleak indeed. Something had to be done, quickly. As is so often the case, Minnesotans took it upon themselves to find a solution to the problem. The University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center was thus established as a place where ornithologists could study and avian veterinarians could medically treat the raptors in such dear need of help. The Raptor Center now admits around 1,000 sick and injured birds every year, as well as helping to identify emerging environmental issues related to raptor health and their populations.

“While saving birds has always been our goal, so too is raising awareness of conservation efforts.”

“The great difficulty in what we do here is how relatively little we know about avian medicine as compared to other branches of veterinary science,” explained Dr. Julia Ponder, executive director of The Raptor Center. “The great majority of medical studies have been conducted on mammals, so we have a pretty thorough understanding of their physiologies. We know relatively little about many of the nearly 200 families of birds, however, and they are all drastically different from one another. What you might know about a chicken will only provide a rough framework for what you need to know about treating a vulture. “Fortunately, The Raptor Center has given our students and veterinarians decades of handson experience working with birds, so we are able to do great work when a falcon or owl comes to us in need of care. As the world’s leading authority on avian orthopedic surgery,

Raptors’ beauty and charisma make them the perfect poster children for that cause. While the injured raptors are not for visiting (you would probably not want to go beak to nose with an irascible wild osprey anyway), the Center is home to several sociable ambassador birds including eagles, hawks, kestrels, and owls that aren’t fit for life in the wild. Tours of the facility run every 30 minutes six days a week, and educational programs for groups of children and adults alike are held both on weekends and by special appointment. Bluestem Reindeer Ranch

by David Scheller

With the exception of the Easter Bunny, no animal is as central to a holiday as the reindeer is to Christmas. The arctic ungulate’s efforts are completely indispensable to Santa’s mission to bring toys to good girls and boys, and coal to the ones who antagonize their parents. Suppose Santa’s sleigh were powered by some other creature, like the donkey or ox or noble house cat -- it just wouldn’t be as impressive without the reindeer’s stately antlers, bulbous snoot, and inestimable charm. Christmas would be ruined. It wasn’t out of respect for Christmas that Dave Dorow and Wendy Clark of Maple Lake took in their first reindeer, however. What they wanted at first was a pet. “We’ve always liked having animals around our small acreage,” explained Dave. “Our son used to raise poultry for the 4H back when he was young, and we still have some geese running around who were grandfathered in during that time. We were looking for a new interesting pet, something lowmaintenance, and a friend told us about how much he loved his reindeer. We looked into it, liked what we learned about the animal, so got our pair seven years ago.” The couple came to run Bluestem Reindeer Ranch along with their does Teeka, Solveig, Elli, and Kaya, along with their young buck Bergen. “They’re rugged animals,” continued Dave, “But sweet and gentle, compared to other deer and elk. They each have their own unique personalities. Bergen

You’ll hear one grunt at another when she feels they’re stepping out of line. They’re content to lounge outside even in the bitterest cold, but they rest together around a fan in the warmer months. Every evening they get frisky and run laps around their pen -- the party starts when the sun goes down.” Through their involvement with the Reindeer Owners and Breeders Association, Dave and Wendy learned about a unique opportunity which their pets presented. Now they and their reindeer travel around Minnesota during the holiday season to bring a little deer cheer wherever it’s needed. “The kids’ reactions to the reindeer are the best,” said Dave. “A lot of them don’t even know that reindeer are real animals until they’ve met ours. I guess that’s ‘myth by association.’ They’re excited to learn that even the girls have antlers, and love feeding them animal crackers. One time my wife and I took Teeka into a kindergarten, where a wide-eyed little boy asked us if we were elves. Ha!” Dave and Wendy love sharing their lively reindeer’s charm, and will take two of them to anywhere they’re called in and around the Twin Cities. They’re the perfect spectacle to have outside of a business, and a festive surprise for any child -- especially if Santa Claus might be stopping by that day as well! Dave and Wendy also bring along an antique sleigh when they visit, making the year’s holiday photo shoot setting a done and dusted affair. shopdinelive.net “Well,” Chad corrected himself, “I didn’t find, in the strictest sense, a home for one of my fosters. She was a special case. A little while ago we had gotten word through the grapevine about a man in North Dakota whose husky was escaping from his property pretty often. The city didn’t approve, and the dog was becoming a bother, so the man was planning to shoot her.” “We reached out to the man and told him we would take the husky away with no questions asked. He obliged, so I was tasked with finding the admittedly mischievous dog a new master. I tried very hard to find this beautiful dog a home, but she would become what we term a ‘foster failure’ because I liked her too much so she stayed. Her name is Nala. Like I said, I didn’t technically find a home for Nala -- but Nala sure did find a home for herself.” “Huskies are an intensely social breed,” Chad continued. “Everyone knows that they were bred to pull sleds, but they served another role in the cold Siberian peninsula where they come from, which was to keep people warm at night. It’s where the phrase ‘three dog night’ comes from, meaning it’s so cold that you would need three huskies

piled on top of you to sleep comfortably.” “Because they were essentially bred as blankets, huskies absolutely adore being close to people. I’m met with total, unbridled excitement as soon as I open my front door after work, and my huskies are nearly always by my side after. They even consider my newborn baby their best friend, and follow him everywhere he goes.” “Their personalities are a riot, too. Huskies can be a little stubborn, and may argue with you sometimes, especially if you’d like them to come in from the cold. When I say argue, I mean all-out debate -- instead of barking, huskies howl and make a noise that’s hard to describe as anything other than talking. Make a husky’s reality fall short of their expectations, and they’ll treat you to this hilarious, guttural grunthuffing as they try to convince you to make it otherwise. There’s one husky in Minneapolis named Thor the Magnificent who’s gone viral a couple of times for doing the signature husky squabble.” Making a new friend through Adopt a Husky Minnesota is a simple process. You fill out an application, speak with a volunteer, let them come to your home to make sure that it’s a good one for a husky, and

then once everything is greenlit you go and meet some of the scamps. “I tell people not to fall in love with the first husky they meet right away,” said Chad. “A husky will be your bosom friend for years to come. It’s important to take some time to meet with one you connect with on an emotional level.” You can learn more about rescuing a husky at adoptahuskyminnesota. org. There you can also take a glance at their charity events, like their upcoming photo shoot where your pup can pose with Santa -- perfect for the Christmas card list or your mantel. The

Comedy Roast of Mr. Scrooge by David Scheller

When I was a little boy, my dad used to read A Christmas Carol to me every Christmas Eve. I remember asking what gruel was, being frightened by Jacob Marley’s clanking ghost, and wondering what all the fuss about goose was. It was one of my favorite stories ever. But then I got older and started watching a lot of television. This meant being bombarded yearly by countless made for TV movies and holiday specials offering their own renditions of Dickens’ classic. I watched Yosemite Sam, Kermit the Frog, Fred Flintstone, Mister Magoo, and even The Animaniacs reprise A Christmas Carol year after year until it felt stale. I no longer wanted to revisit the story. I know it by heart thanks to Bugs and the gang. The Comedy Roast of Mr. Scrooge, a refreshing approach to A Christmas Carol courtesy of Camp Bar’s in-house theater company Actors Theater of Minnesota, is the perfect remedy for that Dickens ennui. The show, now celebrating its tenth year in production, in no way attempts to recount a story that is already burned into everyone’s memory. Rather, it takes the form of a traditional celebrity roast with the cast of the story stepping up to do the honors. Jacob Marley is the roast master, Scrooge is the guest of honor, and the Cratchit family and the Ghosts of Christmas Present, Past, and Future team up to tear one another to shreds.

If you are easily offended, or for that matter offendable at all, then this play will offend you. That makes it great. “I would argue that it’s the dirtiest show in Minnesota,” said Adam Fielitz, local comedian and Jacob Marley in the show. “I recommend you put your concerns aside and laugh.

The world is messed up

enough as it is.” “This time of year, we’re all giving things to others, we’re going to parties,” Adam continued.

“Your Christmas postcard photo

encapsulates a great moment in the year, but I’d rather see a bad moment. Show me a photo of your family fighting, of your car breaking down.

That’s not true Christmas nature -- it’s

human, and that kind of tension is beautiful to me.” If you would like a brief reprieve from this time of year’s omnipresent sense of good will, benefaction, and schmalz, The Comedy Roast of Mr. Scrooge is the perfect opportunity to go watch people acting perfectly horrible to each other. Information about and tickets to all of The Cabaret @ Camp’s performances are available at camp-bar.net.

JLaceofbsse Bakeri by David Scheller

Wherever Norwegians go, so too will lefse. Legend has it that the traditional flatbread served as a field ration for Vikings over a thousand years ago as they traipsed around Europe in search of new people to trade with and occasionally raid. It only follows that Minnesota and the Midwest, with its vast strategic reserve of Norskies, should be inundated with lefse. And when Norwegians one day follow their calling to take to the stars and explore the cosmos, you can be certain lefse will be the first thing they have for lunch after they plant their flag on each new alien world they’ve discovered. Bonnie Jacobs of Jacobs Lefse Bakeri grew up baking lefse. (Say that ten times fast.) The recipe had been handed down by her ancestors since their arrival in Minnesota in the 1800s, and not a holiday in her childhood passed by without the three generations of ladies in her family laboring intensely to flatten the lefse dough out just so. Her bakery in Osakis, MN now offers lefse on-site, online, and at the state fair as it has done since Bonnie’s father-in-law carved the store’s first pastry board in 1972. The little bakery regularly cranks out 1,000 14” diameter lefse a day, and can triple that output if an upcoming church dinner or wedding reception demands it.

shopdinelive.net “Great lefse needs good ingredients, for sure,” said Bonnie. “We get all of our potatoes, flour, butter, sugar, and salt from the best sources. But even with the finest things to make it from, lefse just isn’t lefse without the equipment and the skill to make it just right. We roll every lefse we make by hand, making sure it’s exactly thin and round so it will bake perfectly in the oven and be presentable on the table, too.” “How you serve lefse is entirely up to you,” Bonnie continued. “The Norwegians are purists, and insist that only butter or lutefisk belongs on it. Swedes, who are more liberal, say that cinnamon and sugar are good additions as well. It’s the greatest controversy of our time. I say that anything can go on lefse, and use it just like bread to make any kind of sandwich you could imagine, like its a Scandinavian tortilla. It’s very versatile.” Jacobs Lefse Bakeri ships their precious lefse around the country to Midwesterners who’ve strayed so far from home that they’ve found themselves in places so remote that Norwegians never deigned to settle there. Speak of it as an island paradise all you like, but Hawaii would be little more than some pitiful volcanic pustule were it not for Jacobs Lefse Bakeri’s ability to FedEx the goods there. It makes one wonder if pineapple jam has ever found itself spread over the stuff. If it has, then humanity has truly completed our circuit of global conquest. “I grew up with lefse,” said Bonnie. “Lefse has been all my years. I hear people fearing that lefse won’t be made anymore one day, and as the last of the Jacobs, I’m afraid of that too. I’m not ready to leave yet, but when I am, I hope to find someone just as passionate about lefse as I am. I’d love to keep this little family business going, so we can keep this one important aspect of our heritage alive into the future.” Jacob’s Lefse Bakeri also sell packs of dry mix for their delicious lefse so you can try your hand at it at home, as well as Swedish coconut cookies, almond cakes, and biscotti. (The Italians somehow snuck their way in.) If you would like to serve your holiday dinners the proper Norwegian way, you can order any of their outstanding baked goods at gotlefse.com. The Vikings will smile down on you from Valhalla if you do.

hen cavemen discovered fire, humanity split into two distinct types of people. The first were those who observed fire and at once realized its tremendous power. They roasted meat over it,

tapping into its nutritious potential. They smelted ore with it, unlocking the secrets of bronze, iron, and steel. They would go on to create Apollo 11 and Little Boy, miracles and horrors, mushing ever onward into the future, courtesy of their faculty of insight. It is thanks to them that we will one day take to the stars. That first type of people are nerds. The second type of people saw fire for the first time and thought “Wouldn’t that look neat if I spun it around

Ase’s moment of realization came when he saw fire poi for the first time. (Fire poi is essentially two giant, burning pom poms suspended by chains and rhythmically swung around the body so their trails make hypnotic

patterns.) Ase knew that he must have it, so he delved into the world of fire dancing. He founded a blog, fell into the company of like-minded people, befriended them, started performing professionally with them, and now heads Insphyre Performance, a hundreds strong community of professional entertainers. Ase and his droogs are well-versed in many schools of fire performance. They practice the fire whip, a kevlar lash that scatters smoke and flames with a sonic boom. And if you manage to successfully blow it out, but the wind blows it back...well, no one likes it when that happens to them.” “People always ask if we get burned,” continued Ase. “The truth is, if you’re afraid of getting burned, you probably shouldn’t be playing with fire.” Insphyre Performance’s latest innovation is their LED equipment. With this marvel their performers may not only perform indoors, they may also clothe themselves in electric technicolor, twirl intricate designs into thin air before them, and otherwise put on an ethereal human light show which, in front of a dark backdrop, looks like the kind of thing Jerry Garcia could only induce dreams about. “Little kids always run up to our performers after shows and ask if they can play with fire, too,” said Ase. “We always tell them the same thing: ‘Only with your parents’ permission.’ That has probably put a halt to a lot of aspiring fire dancing careers.” Insphyre Performance has so far performed for big names like Best Buy, Cargill, and W Hotels, and they perform at all private engagements as well. They’ll travel to anywhere in the country, so if you would like to hire the cool guys for your next big box social, corporate event, or party, you

TEDDY ROOSEVELT by David Scheller To try to summarize the life of Teddy Roosevelt in the introductory paragraph of this article would do him a disservice. He was once shot yet delivered his speech anyway before going to the hospital. He was blinded in one

eye while boxing with an artillery officer in the White House. He ate up to a dozen eggs for breakfast a day. He completed the Panama Canal, dedicated over 100 million acres of national forests, won the Nobel Peace Prize, passed the first workmen’s compensation laws, and sent the Great White Fleet around the world as a display of America’s power. He was an author, soldier, adventurer, athlete, naturalist, president, and force of nature. Sadly, interviews with the president are no longer possible without the aid of a psychic medium, but there is a man in Minnesota who channels the Bull Moose’s spirit in a different way. A longtime admirer

of Teddy Roosevelt, Adam Lindquist was as pleased as punch to see how much he resembled his hero while looking at a photo of himself one day in 2007. He realized that his hair color, eye color, build, and height were all Teddy’s too, so he asked himself:
