AW Vater enters Hall of Fame South Australian honour for respected family business

W Vater & Co recently was inducted into the South Australian chapter of Family Business Australia’s Hall of Fame. The company has a long and strong history with the agricultural industry since being established in 1957. Second generation business, AW Vater & Co is one of the most successful, respected and diversified agriculturalbased operations in the state. AW Vater & Co has established agronomic trial sites at Kadina and Saddleworth. Allen and Doris set out in 1957 with a humble dream that one day they would be able to provide a future for their children within their own business. The company entered the second generation when Allen and Doris’s first son, Roger came to work in the business in 1974. Kim followed in 1975, and their three other children, Jill, Rick and Tania, joined the team in the 1980s. Today, five siblings run the various arms of the business. AW Vater & Co will be conducting field days for growers on Tuesday, August 24 (Kadina) and Thursday, September 9 (Saddleworth). The trials showcase the latest cereal, legume and pulse varieties relevant to each region (including different seeding rates), as well as a look at various pasture options. Fertiliser applications are also a major focus, looking at improving effiencies while minimising inputs, particularly looking at new products such as Carbon Boost and Kafe-F. Other trials are the use of new pre-emergent herbicides for ryegrass control, blackspot management in field peas, seed treatment and demonstrations of new post-emergent herbicides and fungicides. “A major benefit for these two fields days is the access growers get to suppliers and members of the industry, so we encourage everyone to come along and join in the flood of knowledge that is sure to take place. “There are limited positions available with our VIP clients taking priority place. Salvos to launch Red Shield appeal THIS year’s Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal will be launched on Sunday at the Salvation Army Gawler Corps by captain Darren Cox with local MLC, John Dawkins. NeW signs have been erected at sites near Parham, Thompson Beach, Port Prime and Light Beach as part of ongoing work by Natural Resources Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges and the District Council of Mallala to protect the region’s samphire vegetation. Coast, estuary and Marine Officer, Warrick Barnes, said the signs alerted drivers to the fact vulnerable bead samphire was in the immediate vicinity and requested vehicles to stay out of the area. “Many people don’t realise the entire coastal strip north of Adelaide is one of the state’s environmental jewels – and one of Australia’s most significant breeding grounds for

Top tips for bulbs
IT is time to buy spring bulbs. Be sure to plant them into a well-drained spot in the garden. But wait until the cooler weather arrives and after the soil cools down. Before planting, dig in some bulb food. The best bulb choices for warm areas are freesias,jonquils, snowflakes and bluebells. Tulips and hyacinths usually perform better after a few weeks of chilling in the bottom of the fridge (not the freezer!). You can just about grow any bulbs in containers, providing that you select varieties which are not going to grow too tall and have comparatively neat growth. Hyacinths, tulips and dwarf daffodils are most popular, and all will ben-
efit from a few weeks in the fridge (not freezer) before planting. Start by choosing a wide top pot,which is not too deep. Fill up with a well draining bulb potting mix and then add some bulb food. Plant your bulbs quite high up in the potting mix. Although this goes against the usual planting rules, it won’t matter because the bulbs will be discarded once their display is finished. Water the mix well, drain and then place the pot into a cool, dark cupboard or move it to a shady position in the garden and cover with another pot of similar size. Keeping the pot in the dark helps it to grow the best possible root system before the flower starts to emerge. Inspect consistently and once the flower shoot
is a few centimetres tall, slowly and gradually move the pot into more light. With this action, the flower will produce a good strong stem. After flowering, most potted bulbs are completely exhausted and should go into the compost. But if you’re determined to try to save them for next year, they can be carefully transplanted into a garden bed, so do not disturb the roots while foliage still is green.

Don’t forget to prune back your fuchsias. Split up and re-plant clumps of perennials such as violets. Old woody root sections should be trimmed off

ANY garden expert will inform you autumn is the best season for planting just about everything, except the most cold sensitive varieties. Cooler temperatures mean the soil stays moist and is far less likely to dry out. The ground deep below still contains a certain amount of warmth which will stimulate new root growth of the plants you have just planted. These plants still have plenty of time to make good growth before winter arrives. New plants will be well established in time to make maximum growth next spring. Now is the time to plant seeds of sweet peas, primulas, poppies, calendulas, pansies, violas, wallflowers and cornflowers are just some of the array you can select from for your spring display stands at the Garden Centres. Sow cool season vegies – broad beans, carrots, lettuce, peas and onions into sunny beds. Plant garlic cloves in autumn for a summer harvest. Enrich the soil before planting with a slow release organic fertiliser, and some compost. If your ground is on the acid side, it might pay to add some garden lime. Autumn is the best season to start a new compost heap. Start by using the leaves that fall from deciduous trees in autumn. Sprinkle the heap with some garden lime to encourage favourable conditions for decomposition. Tidy up perennials (these are flowering plants that last for more than one year) after their flowering period’s over. Building a Royal reputation AFTER years of continuous upgrades and investment, the Royal Hotel in Balaklava is steadily evolving into a fine establishment. The hotel has been owned and managed by the Friedrichs family, Peter, his wife Sue, and son, Derek, since taking over on November 19, 2007, having run the Milang hotel for about two years before. Peter said family members have their own responsibilities; his is predominately running the front bar. It has taken years to get the hotel to where it is today, with painting, renovations and regular improvements, including the building of the beer garden and outdoor dining areas, ongoing since taking over about four years ago. “It was a bit rundown and needed some work. This was the attraction to buy the hotel – and we could get it freehold, which was a real bonus,” Peter said. “We had a plan before we got here of what needed to be done.” Further improvements are still on the
