Board of Trustees 2014-2015

Brother Joseph Jozwiak, FSC

Dear Alumni and Friends of CBA, In her speech given at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 27, 1996, First Lady Hilary Rodham Clinton made reference to the African proverb that “It takes a village to raise a child.” The theme of this Alumni Newsletter is the “Sights and Sounds of CBA” – a spinoff on Hilary Clinton’s “it takes a village” speech. This edition of the Alumni Newsletter will highlight the many people who help make Christian Brothers Academy a great school and whose work is oftentimes done “behind the scenes.” I hope that you will take time to acquaint yourself with our staff members from the finance office, cafeteria, nurse’s office, secretaries, maintenance department and technology department, along with our faculty members, students and volunteers. The dedication and commitment of our “behind the scenes” staff members gives new meaning to the phrase “it takes a village,” making CBA a vibrant and strong Lasallian community! In addition to the many “Sights and Sounds of CBA,” photos from our recent two alumni receptions in Florida, alumni news and notes, Honors Night, the Spring Musical and accomplishments by our student-athletes will also be featured in this newsletter. I hope that you will enjoy reading this edition of the newsletter and that it brings about a sense of ‘Brothers’ pride and nostalgia! Best wishes for a wonderful springtime!

Sincerely,

Hockey

The annual John Downes (’77) Memorial Alumni Hockey Game was held on Dec. 5 at the Tsha Hon Nonyen Dakhwa Onondaga rink. After a spirited game, the players took in the varsity game and then retired to the Change of Pace for post game refreshments and some very fine pizza and wings, courtesy of our host Bob Brazell ’73.

CBA in Florida

Hosted by Jack ’70 and Mary Morrison, the 3rd annual CBA in Naples event took place at the Bonita Bay Club! Two dozen alumni and friends attended the event on Feb. 19. The group was warmly welcomed by our host, Jack Morrison after which each of those present shared their name, graduation year and connection with the school. A fabulous roast turkey spread, passed hors d’oeuvres and a dessert bar provided ample sustenance. Later in the evening, CBA Development Director, Patti Callahan offered a school update and answered questions. Alumni in attendance ranged from Sam Vavonese ’54 to Kaley Pfohl ’08 and included 4th generation alumnus Shane Hopkins ’07! Alumni in attendance front row (l-r): Norm Vogt ’54, Sam Vavonese ’54, Ed Ferrante ’55, John Ryan ’55, (Back l to r) Don Valerino ’59, Bill Burke (CBA Lincroft), Denny Niland ’66, Shane Hopkins ’07, Dan Herrick ’65, John Brilbeck ’64, Kaley Pfohl ’08, John Stier ’70, Jack Morrison ’70.

Basketball

On Dec. 29, close to 30 alums gathered in the CBA gym for the ‘118th’ annual alumni basketball games (well, at least according to long-time announcer, Tom Niland ’65). Our most stalwart basketball alumna, Christina West ’07, made her seventh appearance at the games since graduating, but unfortunately, we did not have enough ‘Lady Brothers’ to field a woman’s game. Twenty-two guys took to the hardwood to play at an unusually competitive level, with grads from the class of 1964 (Senator John DeFrancisco) to 2010 (Jameel Balenton and Pete Corasaniti) battling it out. In the end, the Purple team was triumphant, but the Gold team had an official ‘dunk,’ perhaps the first one in alumni basketball history!

CBA in Florida

A wonderful collection of CBA alumni, family and friends gathered at the PGA Resort in Palm Beach on Feb. 20. Hosts Dan McCarthy ’66 and CBA Trustee John Sindoni, AFSC ’63 welcomed over 30 guests on a cool-for-Florida evening. It was soon evident that CBA connections bind so many of us, from Convent graduate, Sandra Chase ’64 to Rob and Lin Daino’s daughter who will start in 7th grade this fall as a member of the Class of 2021. Fundraising FUN Student Phonathon Raises More Than $6,200 For School’s Annual Fund Fourteen enthusiastic and persuasive CBA seniors joined together after school on Monday, March 2 to make calls to generous and loyal donors on behalf of the 2015 Annual Fund. Fueled by Tully’s Tenders and chocolate, these hard working students took to the phones with professionalism, energy and an impressive level of maturity. During their conversations, they clearly explained how tuition revenue does not fully cover the costs of educating a student at CBA and that the school depends on donations to the Annual Fund to support operating costs, teachers’ salaries, and financial aid, stressing the compelling statistic that this year, more than $1million has been awarded to almost half of our students.

The student callers were hugely successful...making close to 300 calls in less than two hours, and amassing gifts and pledges totaling more than $6,200. Dennis Owen, Fine Arts Wing of their Alma mater to attend the inaugural ‘Lady Brothers’ event: Bubbles & Brunch on March 21. The Pirro Family* ‘Pirro’ is a name you hear quite often throughout the Central New York community. Whether it’s in local politics, referring to Nick Pirro Jr.’s ’57 previous reign as Onondaga County Executive or in local business, where Thomas Sr. ’63 and Thomas Jr. ’89 have made quite a name for themselves in the funeral home realm. This is a family that’s built on tradition, determination and loyalty. With four generations as part of the CBA family, we’re happy their lineage has grown to be a mainstay at our school. Just as in the Pirro family, our school celebrates tradition, encourages determination and displays the utmost loyalty, each and every day.

Peer Ministry Lenten Project

Students teamed up with Andrew Lunetta, Executive Director of Tiny Homes For Good for this year’s Lenten Drive. A Tiny Home for Good builds and manages affordable, safe, and dignified homes for individuals who have faced chronic homelessness. A Tiny Home for Good project will construct and maintain tiny one-bedroom homes measuring between 150 and 200 square feet and are equipped with all the amenities of a regular house. Under the plan, three homes would be built on a vacant city lot. Students in each homeroom were asked to buy a brick for $5. Monies raised and donations, such as furniture, through the Lenten Drive, were donated to Tiny Homes For Good. It costs approximately $15,000 to build a home. As of presstime (April 9), close to $9,000 had been raised.
