The road back to State starts tonight against Marquette By Madison Pearia, Aleigha Hornaday and Taylor Smith Pattonville finished the regular season with a 7-2 record, and will begin the MSHSAA Class 6 football playoffs tonight at home against Marquette (6-3). “We’ve been grinding all summer to make a lasting impression on future generations to come, to aspire to live up to the legacy we have left imprinted here at our school and throughout the community,” Micheal Pirrie said. Pattonville defeated Marquette 27-10 on Oct. 5 and now face the Mustangs again, just 3 weeks later. “We underestimated them last time which is why they scored so much and we want to fix the mistakes that happened and keep it rolling,” Aaron Webb said. After beating rival Ritenour 34-7 on Oct. 19 in the final regular season game of the year, the Pirates won back-to-back Conference championships for just the second time in school history. “It felt humbling and more like a blessing to win back-to-back championships,” quarterback Andre Webb said, “especially since it was Ritenour’s senior night.” After dropping contests to Hickman in the season opener and the Homecoming game against Ladue, Webb said the team has come back from adversity. “All of my experiences in my four years of high school football were either learning lessons or all fun,” Webb said. “Rather than letting a loss get to us, we have always managed to push through and come back harder the next game.” Bouncing back from their loss to the Rams on Oct. 12, the Pirates recovered smoothly in the regular season’s final game. Within the first 6 minutes of the game, running back Sam Sanderson took the ball 55 yards for a touchdown.

(Photo by Aleigha Hornaday) “It’s always that one play you do that adds momentum to the game,” Sanderson said. “I just had to turn us up.” The Pirates extended their lead with a 20-yard pass from Webb to wide receiver Vicario Upchurch. There was no sibling rivalry in this school rivalry as twin brothers Aaron Webb and Andre Webb worked together to lead Pattonville to victory against Ritenour. Wide receiver Aaron Webb scored his first offensive play touchdown with a 13yard pass from his twin brother, Andre Webb. “It was a great feeling,” Aaron Webb explained. “We did what we had to do as a team to get this W. Now we just have to continue to level up.” The road to state led the Pirates all the
way to the Class 5 championship game in 2017, and after that journey ended with a 36-35 loss to Staley High School, senior Chandler Mann said he learned what he needs to do differently in order to make sure the results are in his favor this time around. “I’ve been putting in a lot of hours of hard work and I’ve dedicated myself to become more of a leader for my team,” he said. “Getting a ring for my senior year would complete my high school football experience.” The road starts Friday, Oct. 26, against Class 6 District 1 No. 6 Marquette (6-3). 1954 A Program is Built Pirate’s football has its inaugural season under Coach Jack Wells. Their record was 2-4.
1970 Lineman of the Year Ken Jones

1970 Pattonville’s Best Lineman Ken Jones was selected to the All-District team for offense and defense. Jones went on to play for the University of Arkansas, and later played professional with the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.
1984-85 The First Star QB Scott Cooper finished fourth for passing in the St. Louis area as a junior. In 1985, Cooper finished second. He went on to be an All-Star MLB player. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, and Kansas City Royals.
1988 Making History Pattonville plays in their first playoff game under the leadership of new head coach Rick Glidewell. They advanced to the state quarterfinals and ended their season 6-6.

1991 A Hall of Famer Eddie Davis, Pattonville Class of ‘91, played 15 seasons with the Canadian Football League. After playing in four championships and winning two, Davis was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015.

On the Sidelines Coach Don Greco led the Pirates to their first appearance in the state championship game.
1992 Best Defense Yet Pirates finished their regular season undefeated, a program first. This year’s defense shined holding opponents to just 6.3 points per game, having played 11 games. They held three teams to under 35 yards. Steve Smith proved to be a dominate linebacker this year.
2000 A Dominate Year Head Coach Don Greco leads Pattonville to their first State Championship game. Greco earned the title Coach of the Year. During the season, QB Eric Stranghoener throws 1,706 yards for 17 touchdowns, setting a school record.

2017 One for the Record Book
The Pirates advanced to the Class 5 state championship game. David Ellison Jr. and Kaleb Eleby led the team. Ellison was named the Class 5 Defensive Player of the Year. He collected 112 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and set a Metro record with 10 interceptions. Eleby was the Suburban XII South Offensive Player of the Year. Over his career, he captured all of Pattonville’s passing records completing 645 passes for 9,733 yards, 89 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. He threw a total of 1,110 passes for a 58.1 percent competion rate. He was a 4-year starter with a 28-19 record. He threw 44 passes in the State Championship game, a state-wide record. He completed 29 of those passes, five for a touchdown, to tie two different state records.

Steve Smith Head Coach Head coach Steve Smith is entering his 21st season working with the Pirates football team.
Smith started coaching at his alma matter in 1998, and in 2009, he was appointed to the position of head coach. Eight years later, he led Pattonville on an impressive drive to the Missouri Class 5 state championship game where the Pirates lost to Staley High School, 36-35. Smith has been a part of the Pattonville School District since he was a student. In high school, he was an exceptional football player and was named
Alexander Hubbs Athletic Trainer Mr. Alexander Hubbs is the new Pattonville High School athletic trainer and has gone
through a lot to be there. He became an athletic trainer because he said they have the “rare ability” to see a patient’s entire injury process. “From the initial evaluation to return to play, athletic trainers get to be there every step of the way,” he said. Hubbs received his bachelors degree in exercise science from Truman State University and his

He racked up an impressive list of achievements including being named 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-Metro, and the Missouri East All-Star Game Team Captain. He left with pride and is honored as one of Pattonville’s Wall of Famers. After Pattonville, he went on to play Division I football at Northern Illinois University and was once again named a team captain and Defensive Player of the Year. He said his biggest achievements as a coach has been “sending kids to college” and “turning boys into men.” He wants people to know that personal accolades mean nothing to him. “What matters is what we do as a team.” Smith is married to his loving wife Chanelle and has three kids: Steven Smith II (12th grade), Kyah Smith (10th grade), and Samiya Smith (4th grade).
masters from Saint Louis University (SLU). While graduating from SLU, he took the board of certification exam and passed, and then applied for his license from the state of Missouri. His graduate classwork was very rigorous as he spent his mornings in classes and his afternoons at various clinical sites around St. Louis. “This didn’t leave much free time in our schedules, especially for having a job, which made it difficult to afford graduate school.” Hubbs came to Pattonville because “it was a great opportunity for me professionally.” He said he heard great things about the district and how the sports medicine program operates at Pattonville. “I was excited to join it and will help it continue to improve.”
