History

The course was closed during the First World War because the land was taken over and used for the grazing of mules for the military.

Enmore Park was formerly known as Cannington Park Golf Club and originally was situated roughly six miles to the north of its current location. Cannington Park was opened on Easter Monday, 1906. It was a nine-hole course, 2,200 yards in length, with a bogey score of 38 and some of the original holes can still be seen next to Cannington Quarry. Groundstaff used horse-drawn grass cutters to tend to the course and put leather shoes on the horses’ hooves to save the greens, which had the reputation of being very fast.

The course was closed during the First World War because the land was taken over and used for the grazing of mules for the military. A new pavilion was erected in 1926, but it became clear there was not enough land to accommodate possible expansion, so a new site was sought and Enmore Park identified. Enmore Park Golf Club was officially opened on Saturday, September 24, 1932 at 3pm by Mr R.P. Croom Johnson, K.C., M.P. It was initially a nine-hole course measuring about 2,500 yards.

History continued... The Bridgwater Mercury called it “a most delightful spot” and added: “The land is undulating and there are no roads, stiles or barbed wire to negotiate as on the old links at Cannington.” Mr Croom Johnson was the first to tee off and his ball was later mounted with a small silver plaque and a bird above it (it can be seen in our trophy cabinet). Five new holes were opened for play on Roughmoor in 1938 and plans were afoot for further expansion before the outbreak of the Second World War changed everything.

8

www.enmorepark.co.uk

Much of the course was ploughed up to help the war effort and despite Enmore Park eventually being reduced to seven holes, members decided to keep the club going rather than close down until the war ended. Some up-and-coming professional golfers took part in two exhibition matches at Enmore Park in 1967. Their names? Tony Jacklin, Clive Clark, Harry Weetman, Hugh Boyle, Peter Green, George Will and Peter Townsend. In 1969 Mr Philip Pensabene, the millionaire chairman of a firm in Bridgwater, donated £73,000 to expand the course to 18 holes. His gift transformed the club and his portrait hangs over the centre of the bar in the clubhouse.

The club hosted a spectacular celebrity golf tournament in October 1982. . Messrs. Fred Hawtree & Co. (golf architects) designed and laid out the new 18-hole course, which measured 6,431 yards and which was opened for play on May 16, 1972 with a local police inspector, T.C. Lane, the first man out at 4.20am. Nigel Wixon became our professional from June 6 of that year, and he is still here to this day. Four days later saw the official opening ceremony, performed by Sir Roger Hollis, the then President of the Somerset Golf Union. The club hosted a spectacular celebrity golf tournament in October 1982 which featured a host of big names from the world of showbusiness and sport, including Barry Took, Leslie

Crowther, Kevin Keegan and Ian Botham and drew more than 2,000 spectators. Somerset’s West Indies batsman Viv Richards won the event. In March 1990 there was a visit from European Ryder Cup star Jose Maria Canizares, who won a challenge match against the Club Captain, John Packer, and our professional, Nigel Wixon, 3 and 2. Tony Hill, the English Golf Union President, opened our new £450,000 clubhouse in August of that year.

Championship Golf Course Established in 1932 following a move from the club’s original site in nearby Cannington, this fabulous championship golf course was redesigned to 18 holes by Fred Hawtree in 1972. It is a hidden gem of the South West set within the lower slopes of the glorious Quantock Hills.

Two loops of nine start and finish at the clubhouse. At par 71 on 6,453 yards for men and 5,683 yards par 73 for ladies, the course offers a challenging test to all standards of golfer and is immensely entertaining. To add charm to the beautiful panorama, a delightful brook with three accompanying ponds is in play on five of the holes and, as a group, Enmore provides four of the most testing par 3s.

Enmore is a parkland course near Bridgwater in Somerset which, from its highest points, offers extensive views over nearby hills and across the Bristol Channel to Wales.

The long par 4 uphill 10th, which is well over 400 yards in length and requires the most accurate of drives to avoid finding the trees, is one of the most daunting holes in the West Country.

Championship Golf Course continued... • In 2009 Enmore Park became a championship golf course when invited to host the English Women’s Amateur Open Stroke Play Championships.

• In 2013 the Southern Regional Qualifiers of the Brabazon Trophy, the English Men’s Amateur Championship, were held here.

• In 2011 it co-hosted its first R&A event, the prestigious British Boys Open Championship.

• In addition there have been several requests from the Somerset Golf Union and Somerset Ladies Golf Association to host county competitions and championships.

• England Golf Women South West selected Enmore as the venue for their Foursomes Championships in 2012.

Take The Course Tour Prepare for your visit to Enmore Park by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. Hole 1 (Jubilee) 385 yards, par 4 No being eased into your round here, with a very testing opening hole. The opening tee shot up the hill requires accuracy, with out of bounds on the left and a gully on the right where the ball will certainly be lost, although this is the preferred side of the fairway to hit for an easier second into the green. Your approach shot is also uphill and normally is a blind shot, so wait to hear the bell before trying to reach the green.

14

www.enmorepark.co.uk

Hole 2 (Church) 146 yards par 3 Don’t be fooled into thinking this short par 3 offers some respite, the shot to the green looks easy but beware. On a blustery day, the smart golfer will take note of the prevailing wind direction as he walks off the first green, because with the second tee being surrounded by trees and sheltered from the wind it is easy to forget to make allowances. Hole 3 (Castle) 369 yards, par 4 The tee shot needs to be centre to slightly right as the fairway runs away to the left and into the trees, though too long and right will also block you out. Hit a 3 wood off the tee with a gentle right-to-left shape to be in a good position for the approach. Long hitters can almost drive this green, but the shot must be just left of the right-hand trees.

Two accurate shots are required here to stand much hope of making your par. Hole 4 (Lapwing) 337 yards, par 4 This hole is a dog-leg left with a bunker waiting for most shots hit to the left of the fairway. Positioning your tee shot just right of the bunker will leave a short iron to the green but beware of the pond. If you are a long hitter and like to take a risk, you can attempt to go for the green by cutting the corner from the tee over the trees and water. Hole 5 (Barford) 411 yards, par 4 Two accurate shots are required here to stand much hope of making your par. A straight drive just to the right of the fairway bunker is the preferred method of attack. The approach shot needs to hit the green, because unless you are very lucky, anything short running onto the green will be taken by the bunkers either side.

Hole 6 (Roughmoor) 491 yards, par 5 This hole is a dog-leg left with bunkers waiting for most shots hit to the right of the fairway. Positioning is important: aim at the second fairway bunker with a right-to-left shape for an easy shot into the green and a chance of birdie. Hole 7 (Kingfisher) 179 yards, par 3 This short par 3 looks easy, but the trees either side of the pond catch out many. The green is protected on the left with a long bunker. Make sure you take plenty of club and play safe to the back, because anything short is in the water.

www.enmorepark.co.uk

15

Take The Course Tour continued... Hole 8 (The Barn) 385 yards, par 4 The approach shot is uphill so take an extra club and don’t get caught out by the bank at the front of the green. Pitch your approach shot short of the green to avoid running through the back, where trouble awaits. The green looks flat but has some interesting borrows, so take the time to study your line. Hole 9 (The Pond) 408 yards, par 4 Your tee shot should be to the right side of the fairway as this is the best line into the green and it also takes the out-ofbounds on the left out of the equation. Land your approach short of the green in firm conditions as it slopes from front to back. There is also a sharp left-to-right slope that makes this arguably the trickiest green on the course.

Hole 10 (The Oak) 437 yards, par 4 Stoke Index 1 on the card and rightly so, you need to have a good drive and a good second shot to get anywhere near the green on this toughest of par 4s. The hole is tree lined most of the way so keep up the middle before admiring the majestic specimen by the green that gives the hole its name. If the green is unreachable in two, best to lay up and attack the pin with an easy pitch. Hole 11 (Durleigh) 471 yards, par 4 Despite its formidable yardage, this long par 4 is easily reachable in two. In fact, you might need one less club in the summer as the ball could run through the green. Drive down the left side, letting the fairway bring the ball back. Having likely been caught out by the fairway bunkers, you will be relieved to see there is no sand around the green.

www.enmorepark.co.uk

17

Take The Course Tour continued... Hole 12 (Pheasant) 218 yards, par 3 Those thinking this looks a relatively straightforward par 3 would be mistaken. At over 200 yards even from the yellow tees it requires a long iron hit with precision to avoid the trees and the three bunkers that guard the green on the right. Poorly-hit shots risk falling foul of the stream. Hole 13 (Quantocks) 375 yards, par 4 Bisecting the two fairway bunkers with your drive should put you in perfect position for your second shot. The green is protected by three well-placed bunkers which do plenty of business and study the pin position before choosing the club for your approach as you do not want to be left with a long putt on the undulating green.

18

www.enmorepark.co.uk

Hole 14 (The Lake) 352 yards, par 4 Not the longest of holes, success on this dog-leg is all about accuracy. Tee off over the fairway bunker on the right to leave a short approach to the green. Those not so ideally positioned may have to worry about the pond around 75 yards from the green, while the putting surface itself is protected by bunkers left and right. Hole 15 (Heron) 185 yards par 3 Choose the correct club to the final short hole on the course. The green is long and it is not easy to get close, particularly on windy days. There is water and plenty of trees to punish the particularly wayward.

You’ll need a good second shot to get to the green and the greenside bunkers are well placed. Hole 16 (Wind Town) 488 yards, par 5 A drive aimed at the marker post off the tee on this dog-leg to the right should put you in perfect position between the bunkers. Take plenty of club with your approach. You’ll need a good second shot to get to the green and the greenside bunkers are well placed. The large putting surface has lots of borrow and three-putts are not uncommon.

Hole 18 (The Tor) 496 yards, par 5 An inviting par 5 to finish which is straight downhill off the tee and tends to play shorter than its yardage. With your drive, favour the right side of the fairway as it runs away from right to left and you could find your next shot blocked out by the poplars on the left. Many approach shots go missing in the trees on the right, so avoid at all costs.

Hole 17 (Quarry Copse) 320 yards, par 4 This fairway runs away to the right, so the shot needs to draw to the left side, missing the left-hand fairway bunker. A fairway wood off the tee towards the marker pole should leave you up at the top of the hill from where it’s a short iron to the green. One of the easier holes on the course and a definite birdie chance.

Professional Nigel Wixon is something of a golfing institution in Somerset and is probably among the longest serving club professionals in the country having joined Enmore Park in 1972. Nigel recently celebrated his 40th anniversary as the Club Professional and it is little surprise that he is very popular with members and visitors alike. He will always offer a good deal on golf equipment and sound advice on your golf game.

2012 marked Nigel’s 40th anniversary as the Club Professional. He and his son David, also a qualified professional, have spent many years promoting and assisting with junior golf and teaching the delights of the game to beginners. David is a Somerset County Golf Partnership Academy coach and with the club being a Somerset Golf Coaching Centre as well it is the ideal place to come if you are determined to reduce your handicap by improving the weaker areas of your game.

In 2009, Nigel had the honour of being named Club Captain, which is a golfing rarity for a club professional. His chosen charity that year was the Ups and Downs Charity for Downs Syndrome children and he ran several coaching sessions for the youngsters. The children still continue to come once a year for an afternoon’s activity.

Enmore Park Hall Of Fame We do not say we are a club that champions younger golfers without justification, because Enmore Park has produced numerous young players who have gone on to receive recognition at national level. Current European Tour player David Dixon learnt his golf here. David was an England Amateur International in 2000-2001, the same year in which he was selected for the Walker Cup squad. In 2001 he became South African Open Amateur Champion and won the Silver Medal for leading amateur at The Open Championship, which was played at Royal Lytham & St Annes. David turned professional later that year and in 2008 claimed his first win on the European Tour, winning the St Omer Open in France. He booked his place on the 2012 European Tour by winning the qualifying school in Spain in 2011.

Photographs of all our other famous golfers adorn our foyer, and the Enmore Hall of Fame includes: Pat Rodgers - English Seniors Ladies matchplay Champion 1993, English Seniors International 1993 Andrew March - England Schools International 1994 (now PGA Pro) David Wixon - England Schools International 1994, Daily Telegraph Junior Champion 1995 (now PGA Pro) Laura Wixon - England Girls International 1993-94, England Schools International 1994 Gavin Legg - England Schools International 1998 Hannah Grant - England Schools International 2003 Becky Dowell - England Schools International 2003 Matt Kippen - England Schools International 2006, English Schools Champion 2008 www.enmorepark.co.uk 35

Members’ Golf Men You will find that Enmore Park is a very friendly club, and we encourage new golfers to participate in our competitions which are mainly played at weekends with a few in midweek. We also have a number of knockout competitions which is a great way to meet other club members. During the summer months there are Enmore teams competing in the county knockouts, as well as the Avalon League. We also have some friendly matches throughout the year played against local clubs as well as several mixed matches and competitions.

www.enmorepark.co.uk

For those who don’t want to play competitive golf there’s ample time to enjoy playing socially in some of the best scenery anywhere in Britain. The condition of the course is second to none.

Ladies Enmore Park has a very friendly Ladies Section that meets every week for competition and social golf and ladies of all handicaps are welcome to play our beautiful course. Over the years our female members have been successful in county and national competitions. In 2010 the ladies won the Rogers Cup and Centenary Trophy, the first club to hold both trophies in the same year.

Enmore Park has a very willing group of adults who support our young people to play golf. Seniors This is a thriving section for the over-60s with more than 120 members who play in weekly matches at home and away. There are also a number of informal roll-ups throughout the week. Many members of the section play in the various seniors open competitions arranged by other clubs in the region.

Juniors Enmore Park has a very willing group of adults who support our young people to play golf. We have been awarded the GolfMark accreditation which means all our adults are vetted (DBS checked) and adhere to a code of conduct to make sure our juniors are properly looked after at the golf club.

We have and have always had an active junior section of both boys and girls. Over the years at least nine of our junior members have gone on to become PGA professionals. One of these is our assistant pro David Wixon and another is David Dixon, who has played on the European Tour. Others have worked at golf clubs all over the world including Austria, France and Portugal. There are regular juniors-only coaching sessions from PGA professional David Wixon, who is also a Somerset County Academy coach. Throughout the year there are many competitions and club nights. Additional competitions are run during the school holidays. We play matches against other clubs and have a team in the Somerset Junior League.

The manager and staff in the office will be here to welcome you and ensure your day goes well. Prizes for your competitions may be purchased from the Pro Shop and a discount of 10 per cent will be given on non-sale items.

For corporate guests, the Pro Shop can also provide goods featuring corporate logos, if you phone in advance. When a date has been agreed, a booking form needs to be completed and a deposit paid.

Players are expected to have handicap certificates or to be able to play to a reasonable standard, to know and to uphold the rules of golf and follow good course etiquette so that they do not hold up play. Stableford is the preferred form of competition.

If you wish to know more contact the office on 01278 672100 option 4 or email us on manager@enmorepark.co.uk A form is also available to download from our website.
