Simplify the Sentimental

GARDENING & LANDSCAPING

O’Dell Landscaping ❑ Pull important items out of storage. ❑ Select 3 - 5 objects of memory that are most important; remove the rest. ❑ Make it useful. Don’t wait for a special occasion; use that china instead of your everyday ware and wear that heirloom jewelry. ❑ Put it in the cloud. Digitize photographs, documents, receipts and paperwork. ❑ Shoot your stuff. Before letting go of items, preserve them by taking photographs. Group items creatively or take pictures of your family using the objects. Collect photographs in a book with descriptive text. ❑ Tell your story. The most sentimental things aren’t things, but the stories of the people and places we love. Focus on telling that story - through photographs, journals and family blog and let go of the things that fill space, not your heart. - Courtney Carver, Writer and Fine Art Photographer, BeMoreWithLess.com, @bemorewithless

❑ Roll up your hand-knotted wool rug and exchange it for a natural seagrass rug during the summertime. ❑ Cut fresh palm leaves and put them in a large jar or vase to evoke a tropical feeling inside. ❑ “Summerize" the accessories around your home by adding coral, turtle shells or driftwood. ❑ Replace coffee table books with summer/coastal-themed options instead. ❑ Swap out the pillows around your home with bold colored options that are reminiscent of summertime like sunny yellow, turquoise, navy or grass green. ❑ Bring the outdoors inside by decorating with items like ceramic garden stools as side tables and bamboo/rattan furniture. ❑ Put away the winter duvet and add a fresh, white coverlet topped with colorful linen pillows. ❑ Get creative with your art and change out a few key pieces seasonally. For instance, hang a life preserver in the summertime or an oyster shell mirror.

ENTERTAINING OUTDOORS Michaela Mueller with HobNob Entertaining (www.hobnobentertaining.com), shares useful tips on throwing an easy, festive outdoor soiree. 1) Pre-treat your outdoor space for annoying bugs and mosquitoes several hours before you plan to entertain. Take extra care to treat any water features or fountains in your yard. Several companies make organic mosquito "doughnuts" specifically for water features. 2) Make certain to have plenty of ice on hand; at least two pounds per guest. Keep a couple of extra bags stashed in a hidden cooler. 3) Use simple linens. We love to mix Turkish towels as table covers with vintage napkins. 4) Have trays handy to avoid multiple trips for serving guests. Look for a vintage drink caddy to easily carry and serve cocktails. 5) Keep florals simple - this is the perfect time of year to use cuttings from your outdoor space. I always include fresh herbs from my cutting garden. The scent is wonderful, and herbs add interesting texture to arrangements. 6) Serve Popsicles (we love King of Pops adult pops) or mini ice cream sandwiches for dessert.

Summer Into Fall Makeup Tips •Less is more. Opt for switching out your fuller coverage foundation for something sheerer. Tinted moisturizers, tinted bb creams, or cc creams are great alternatives for a lighter look and feel or try spot concealer and go bare! •Skip the pencil eyeliner. Go for a liquid liner which won’t budge as the day wears on. Switching to waterproof mascara is also additional insurance that your looks will holdout from the heat. •Pack a Punch. Livelier colors can brighten up the face and bring a youthful glow to the skin. Pick (just) one product and go for it, just keep the rest of the face minimal. A pop of color on the cheek is usually a good place to start, but a bright lip or even a brighter eyeliner (think cobalt) can really freshen up your look. •Bronze believably. Too much of a good thing is well, too much! Lightly apply a light to medium bronzer (I prefer a matte one) just to the high points of your face where the sun would naturally hit - the forehead, cheekbones, chin, and nose. •Make the switch to liquid lipsticks. Try a long lasting liquid lipstick for a light weight, but polished pout. - Leslie Crawford Moore, www.lesliecrawfordmoore.com

Fun Favors When it comes to wedding favors, we always suggest that our clients give their guests something that is meaningful to them. We have had clients give baskets of peaches (representing the couple’s Georgia roots), homemade jam and honey, grits, BBQ spices, ornaments, boiled peanuts, splits of champagne and of course, koozies just to name a few. Don’t Stress With the Dress • Schedule bridal portrait 2-3 months before wedding. This is a trial run to see what you will look like on your wedding day everything from your hair style, makeup and your bouquet. • Schedule final fitting 2 weeks before just in case last minute alterations are needed. Wear appropriate undergarments! • Take your dress out and look at it a week before the wedding in case it needs to be steamed. • ”Know your own bustle” and have a designated person to bustle your gown for the reception. If possible, take one of your trustworthy bridesmaids to your final fitting to have the seamstress explain how to do it. • Always have a few large safety pins on hand because bustles are famous for ripping, popping or getting stepped on during the reception. Throw a couple of pins in it (underneath) and you will be good to go! - Cacky Rivers, Cacky’s Bride+Aid, “Your Wedding Day Lifesaver”, www.cackysbrideaid.com

Toast of the Town ❑ There are three generally-accepted speeches usual to a wedding reception: the bride’s father’s speech, the bridegroom’s speech and lastly the best man’s speech. ❑ No further speeches are required although other speeches certainly can be made. Many brides prefer to have additional toasts made at the rehearsal dinner. ❑ Consider making toasts earlier in the evening when the amount of alcohol that has been consumed is limited, thus making inappropriate remarks less-likely. ❑ Do not clink your crystal to get everyone's attention; stand and ask for everyone's attention in large groups. You may remain seated with smaller groups. ❑ When being toasted, wait until other guests have drunk to you, then rise and return the toast.

"The groom's cake used to be considered a southern thing (think armadillo cake in Steel Magnolias), but now it is popular at weddings throughout the country. Usually served at the rehearsal dinner or in addition to the bride's wedding cake at the reception, it is most often playfully designed to match the groom's interests. It's a fun way to get the groom involved in wedding planning or it's the perfect surprise for him!" - Haines Barksdale, For Goodness Cakes www.forgoodnesscakescharlotte.com
