WELCOME TO PILCHUCK GLASS SCHOOL'S AUCTION GALA AND CELEBRATION OF GLASS
P I LC H U C K G L A S S S C H O O L Pilchuck Glass School fosters and educates a worldwide community that explores the creative use of glass in art and design. The school is located fifty miles north of Seattle, Washington, in the forested foothills of the Cascade Range, overlooking Puget Sound. Each summer, Pilchuck offers a broad spectrum of courses in the use of glass as an expressive material along with annual residencies for emerging and established artists. Pilchuck’s programs, residencies, and events emphasize experimentation, investigation, teamwork, and personal growth. Students and instructors from all over the world and across the United States come to Pilchuck. Since its founding in 1971 by Dale Chihuly, Anne Gould Hauberg (1917–2016), and John H. Hauberg (1916–2002), Pilchuck has been a creative retreat where artists teach artists in a supportive environment. Pilchuck is open to applications from novice, aspiring, and professional artists with the desire and commitment to learn in any of three dozen one-week to threeweek courses offered from May to September. The school also invites renowned artists who typically work in media other than glass to expand their art through collaboration and individual research by working with accomplished glassmakers. Fall and spring residencies provide emerging and established artists working in glass the time and space to develop new processes or create fresh bodies of work through individual and collaborative projects. Pilchuck’s outreach and special events connect our extended community of artists and supporters. Events take place on campus, in Seattle, and throughout the United States and abroad, showcasing the breadth and depth of contemporary art created with glass.

A B O U T T H E N E O N I N S TA L L AT I O N B Y M I C H A E L H E R N A N D E Z
MICHAEL HERNANDEZ Artist and instructor Michael Hernandez created the neon installations you see displayed throughout Fremont Studios tonight. Michael Hernandez is an artist and educator based in North County San Diego, CA where he heads the glass program at Palomar College and runs a private studio. He has been an active member of the Pilchuck community as a student, poleturner, staff, teaching assistant, artist-in-residence assistant, gaffer, and most recently, instructor. Hernandez’s work investigates the interpretation of landscape in natural phenomena, entropy, and environmental decline through a range of glass processes. His work has been shown throughout the US and abroad, and recently at the re-opening of the Museum of Neon Art (MONA) in Glendale, CA. Through his artwork and teaching, Hernandez promotes the reinterpretation of neon as a sculptural medium and the resurgence of this versatile, light-based medium. Imaginatively inspired by the movement of light trapped in layers of atmosphere, these expressive pieces capture a moment in time. This enigmatic motion is captured through the heating and manipulation of torch-worked neon tubes. Through this shaping process, each piece is created in a unique gesture of movement.

Hernandez created a series of twelve stunning pieces of neon sculpture – each approximately 18” x 18” – that will be displayed during the auction. Each piece has a value of $800 and can be purchased during the auction. Information about purchasing – and about shipping and installation – will be available at the registration desk.

B I D CA RD S A ND BID DING NU M BE R S Check in at registration to receive your bid card and bidding number. All sales are recorded and tracked using the assigned bidding number printed on your bid card. If you registered with a guest, you and your guest will share the same bidder number unless otherwise requested. S I L EN T AUCTION All silent auction bidding will be done this year via paper bid sheets. Silent sections close at staggered times throughout the auction gala event (see page 2 in the catalog and the evening program for silent auction closing times).
In the event of a dispute over a silent auction bid, oral bids may be taken at the discretion of the auctioneer— but only from those who have already placed bids. The auctioneer will determine the winning bid and the decision will be final. FUN D-THE- F UTURE Fund-the-Future is an opportunity to support Pilchuck with a monetary gift. This portion of the evening will take place during the Live Auction (after item number 35).
The auctioneer will invite you to hold up your card to pledge your commitment. Hold your card until your bidder number is read aloud. You may hold up your auction bid card multiple times to pledge more than one amount. Pay for your pledge along with your other auction purchases at the end of the evening.

L I V E AUCT I O N To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card up high with the number facing toward the auctioneer. Either the auctioneer or a bid spotter can accept your bid. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is merely a fractional advance over the previous bid. The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer is deemed a legal contract with that bidder to purchase the item.
You may preview live auction items in the entrance area of Fremont Studios on October 15, 2016 until the start of the live auction. The preview period ends once the live auction begins. C HEC KO U T Cash, personal checks, and Visa, MasterCard, and American Express credit cards are accepted as payment for purchases.
All purchases are final. Purchased items must be paid for and removed from the premises by the end of the auction gala event. Items that are not removed or are left in the care of the UPS shipper will be shipped to the purchaser at the purchaser’s expense. There are no exchanges or refunds. Pilchuck Glass School is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Please consult with your tax advisor for details. S HI PPI N G For your convenience, Pilchuck has arranged for the services of UPS to be available the night of the auction. The UPS Store shippers will pack your purchases in a
second box and ship items at standard UPS rates, plus a fee for packing materials and labor. You will have the option to purchase insurance for your artwork, which is highly recommended. A UPS Store representative will be available during the auction, and you will be able to sign up for shipment of your purchases at any time before or during the event. Pilchuck Glass School will not ship your auction purchases. If possible, please take all of your purchases home with you. This ensures safe transport for your delicate glass items. Pilchuck volunteers will pack your purchases for you to take home at no extra charge. Once you have made arrangements with the UPS Store, Pilchuck Glass School is not responsible for your artwork and cannot, by shipping company regulations, intervene on your behalf with the shipper or carrier. You must resolve any concerns regarding artwork which are lost or damaged during shipping by contacting the UPS Store directly. Items left at the auction without shipping instructions will be shipped to the purchaser by Pilchuck at the purchaser’s expense.

ANNE GOULD HAUBERG 1917 – 2016
Anne Gould Hauberg was known for her arts philanthropy and advocacy for people with learning disabilities. She played a major role in the creation of many local institutions: Pilchuck Glass School, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, the Experimental Education Unit at the University of Washington, and more. Born in Seattle, Ms. Hauberg was inspired by her father, prominent Seattle architect Carl Gould, who designed the Seattle Asian Art Museum as well as twenty-eight buildings on the University of Washington campus. Anne was once asked why she supported the arts. Her answer: “Because as my father said, ‘If you don’t support the artists, you won’t have them.’ ” In 1941, she married John Hauberg, whose extended family co-founded the Weyerhaeuser Company. In 1971, the Haubergs, with Dale Chihuly, founded Pilchuck Glass School in the foothills of the Cascades, near Stanwood, Snohomish County. “If it weren’t for Annie,” Chihuly said, “there would be no Pilchuck Glass School.” 10
In addition to her celebrated career as an ardent collector and supporter of the arts, she was known for her civic activism that pushed to preserve historic buildings. She was also instrumental to the founding of the Municipal Arts Commission, the predecessor to the Seattle Arts Commission. She gave the Tacoma Art Museum much of her art collection, as well as works to Harborview Medical Center, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and The Bush School.

Jason Christian is a glass artist living in the Seattle area. He has worked with a variety of well-known artists including Martin Blank, Preston Singletary, James Mongrain, and Nancy Callan. For almost a decade he has been an integral member of Dale Chihuly's Boathouse team, collaborating and working with international artists, including Pino Singnoretti. His individual work explores the art of reticello, classical Venetian techniques and modern simplicity. Recently, Christian has been developing art inspired by the works of Fabergé, combining the delicate complexity of reticello with the intricate detailing Fabergé's eggs are known for.

Cappy Thompson and Dick Weiss have been friends and colleagues for nearly four decades. Thompson and Weiss have impressive careers in glass, with works in private and public collections internationally. Both have public art installations in stained glass at SeaTac Airport. Nine years ago, Thompson and Weiss began a series of collaborative works in clay. This year they had three exhibitions of the fruits of that labor. The piece offered here, Lions on a Full Moon, is one of their favorites.

Dan Friday is a Seattle-based glass artist and a member of the Lummi Nation. He has spent the last twenty years working for artists such as Dale Chihuly, Paul Marioni, Preston Singletary, and many others. He has taught at Pilchuck Glass School and at Haystack Craft Center. Friday has had residencies at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, the Burke Museum in Seattle, and the Dream Community in Taiwan. Friday is a recipient of the Bill Holm Grant and the Discovery Fellowship through SWAIA. His work can be seen in galleries across the United States.

Duncan McClellan’s fascination with glass began at age five. He never forgot the image of the glowing, molten glass, formed by an expert craftsman. After working with various mediums, he began learning to blow glass in 1987. McClellan studied with Fred Kahl and John Brekke at the New York Experimental Glass Workshop. He has been honored as the second American invited to study and work at the ARS Studio in Murano, Italy. McClellan is the Founder/Director of the Duncan McClellan Gallery, the St. Petersburg Hot Glass Workshop, and the Educational 501(c)(3) the "DMG School Project" in St. Petersburg, Florida. Studio Salvadore is a collaborative glass production team headed by Muranese glass artists Mattia and Marco Salvadore. The two brothers began working as young boys alongside their father, Davide Salvadore, in the studio Campanol e Salvadore. Both Mattia and Marco inherited their father's passion for glass blowing, and thus began to work with him full time after attending college. Later, Mattia perfected his skills with various Muranese masters and at Pilchuck Glass School while Marco travelled around the world to teach glass blowing techniques.

Tres Formas de Geometria 33 x 12 x 16 in Signed, 2010 Glass and mixed media Therman Statom is a sculptor, glass artist, and painter most notably known as a pioneer of the contemporary glass movement for his life-size glass ladders, chairs, tables, constructed box-like paintings, and small scale houses; all created through the technique of gluing glass plates together. Much of the latter half of Statom’s career has focused on the importance of educational programming within the arts. Zynsky collaborated with Mathijs Teunissen Van Manen to create a glass thread-pulling machine concurrently developing her unique filet de verre technique. She has received two National Endowment for the Arts grants, the Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts 2006, the Smithsonian Institute Visonary Award 2015 and most recently, she was the third recipient of Corning’s prestigious new Specialty Glass Residency. Zynsky’s work is represented in museums and private collections around the world. This piece is donated by the artist and Austin Art Projects in honor of Dorothy and George Saxe. Matthew Szösz discovers new forms through material innovation. Born in Rhode Island, he received a BFA, BID, and an MFA/Glass from Rhode Island School of Design. He has taught at Toyama, Penland School of Crafts, Pilchuck Glass School, VCU, Pittsburgh Glass Center, and Public Glass. Fritz Dreisbach lives on Whidbey Island and works in his new glass studio in Freeland, WA. Pilchuck Glass School presented their 2015 Libenský | Brychtová Award to Dreisbach, “acknowledging his extraordinary talent and high achievement in the world of contemporary glass.” Coined the “Johnny Appleseed of Glass” by his peers, Dreisbach has presented hundreds of lectures and demonstrations in over 185 individual institutions for over 50 years in North America, Europe and Asia. Ben Sharp, originally from Gainesville, Florida, began working as a scientific glassmaker in 1997, where he assisted on projects for the University of Florida, the USDA, and NASA. Glass lit a fire within Sharp to work with molten materials and study several ways to work glass. Sharp received his BFA from Alfred University in 2006 in New York. He was the technician at Pilchuck Glass School for seven years, and is currently Production Manager at CannedHeat Glass in Portland, OR.

Antoine Pierini’s father was a glass artist and he grew up working the kilns beside him. Cassandria Blackmore is acclaimed for her unconventional approach to reverse painting on glass. In 1979, Lino Tagliapietra went to Pilchuck Glass School for the first time and American glassblowing was changed forever. He has received numerous awards including two honorary doctoral degrees. His work has been exhibited and included in many collections including the Biennale di Venezia, the M. Chihuly is credited with revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and elevating the perception of the glass medium from craft to fine art. He is globally renowned for his ambitious, site-specific architectural installations in public spaces, and in exhibitions presented in more than 250 museums and gardens worldwide. Major exhibitions include Chihuly Over Venice (1995-96), Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem (1999), Garden Cycle (2001– present), de Young Museum, San Francisco (2008), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2011), Montreal Museum of Fine Art (2013) and Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto (2016). Chihuly Garden and Glass opened at Seattle Center in 2012. Chihuly’s Soft Cylinders, a series that began 30 years ago, demonstrates a pick-up technique of drawing on glass which uses a series of colored glass shards, carefully placed on a hotplate and then gathered onto the molten piece before the final gather of glass from the furnace. These drawings reflect the early influence American Indian trade blankets had on his works. Born in 1952 in Olympia, Washington with a BFA from California College of the Arts and an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, Benjamin Moore’s work is in numerous museums and private collections throughout the world. Moore is a recipient of a NEA grant, a 2006 Libenský Award, was an American Craft Council Fellow, and worked as a designer at the Venini Factory, Murano-Venice, Italy and J&L Lobmeyr, Vienna, Austria. Moore has been affiliated with Pilchuck Glass School for more than three decades as its Interim Executive Director, Artistic Director, faculty, and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees. Moore is the owner of Benjamin Moore, Inc. (BMI), where he has produced his work since 1985.

Jeffrey Sarmiento is Artistic Director at North Lands Creative Glass in Scotland and a Reader in Glass at the University of Sunderland, where he was awarded a PhD in 2011. Pietro and Riccardo Ferro, born respectively in 1975 and 1980, followed in the footsteps of their father, Paolo Ferro, and under his leadership, they learned the art of grinding. In 2000, they opened Moleria, where all artists who work in grinding can be followed. The Ferro brothers see glass as a valuable canvas for creating and expressing their ideas. They specialize in developing new vessels and special artistic structures. The brothers have collaborated with worldrenowned artists such as Lino Tagliapietra, Davide Salvadore, Pino Signoretto, and many others. Currently, they work to create artistic pieces that focus on modern and innovative design.

Jean-Pierre Canlis draws inspiration from nature, most often the ocean. Growing up a competitive surfer on Oahu, and surrounded by nature, his passion for the ocean and nature in general runs deep. In January, Canlis was invited to be Artist in Residence and speaker at TEDxVail 2016, and had full reign of the set design. It was here that Canlis made his very first ‘Rain’ sculpture; a piece that had lived in his head for close to 10 years. When It Rains, It Pours is the very first time Canlis has shown this new sculpture to the art world.

GLOSSARY OF GLASS TERMS
BITS Pieces of molten glass snipped off a blowpipe or punty and applied hot to a glass form.
MOLDBLOWN Glass formed into a shape by being blown into a mold, typically made of wood, metal, or plaster.
CANE Thin rods of glass, usually with a twisted pattern in multiple colors used to add pattern to blown glass.
MURRINE Patterned glass cane cut into sections in order to form small disks that are used in decorating glass or constructing glass forms.
DICHROIC Manufactured glass that is one color when seen by reflected light and another color when light shines through it. The effect can be achieved by applying a dichroic coating to glass that otherwise would not have this property. ELECTROPLATE The process of adhering metal to glass by dipping the glass into an electrically charged solution.
OVERLAY A thin layer of clear or colored glass on the outside of a piece. OFF-HAND Formed freehand on the end of a punty or blowpipe. No mold is used.
ETCH To create a design by cutting away the surface of finished glass with a tool or by treating it with acid.
PÂTE DE VERRE From French, meaning “glass paste.” The paste is made from crushed glass and enamel paint. It is applied to the surface of a mold and fired in a kiln at high temperature.
FLAMEWORKING OR LAMPWORKING The process of using a gas-fueled torch or lamp to heat glass rods for sculpting, blowing, and beadmaking.
ROLL-UP In this process, multiple pieces of flat glass are fused into a tile. The tile is reheated, rolled up onto a gather, and then blown into a three-dimensional object.
FUSE To melt together two or more pieces of glass in a kiln.
SANDBLAST To blow or blast sand onto a piece, etching away layers of glass. Masking is used to create patterns.
GRAAL A glassblowing technique wherein a thick “blank” or core form is blown, usually with two or more layers of color. The blank is then engraved, bringing out the underlying color, much as is done with a cameo. The engraved blank is subsequently reheated and blown to its full shape.
SANDCAST To ladle hot glass into a formed mold made of specialized sand.
HOT CAST To ladle hot glass from a furnace into a mold made of sand, steel, or plaster. INCALMO A glassblowing process that joins two or more bubbles of hot glass together, resulting in defined bands of color in a vessel or object. INSCISO A technique for patterning the surface of glass by creating deep incisions, usually with handengraving tools. KILN A high-temperature electric oven used for casting, fusing, and slumping glass. KILNCAST The use of a mold, usually plaster, filled with crushed glass, which is melted in a kiln to produce a solid glass form. LAMINATE To use heat or glue to join pieces of glass. LAMPWORKING See flameworking. LOST WAX A method of casting whereby a wax or waxcoated model is embedded in clay and then baked so that the wax melts and is “lost,” leaving a mold into which hot glass is poured. The mold must be broken in order to retrieve the cast object.
SCAVO Corrosive chemical material applied to the surface of hot glass that gives the final piece a matte finish. SCRUFFITTO The technique of adding color to the surface of glass and then scratching it away, causing a reverse image to appear. SHARD A small fragment of glass. Colored shards may be melted into a piece for decoration. SLUMP To heat a sheet of glass in a kiln until it is soft enough to assume the shape of a mold without becoming molten. SMALTI A soft, intensely colored Venetian glass that is chipped into squares for use in creating traditional mosaics. THREADS Thin strands of glass, usually colored, that may be added to the glass in a variety of ways for different effects. VITREOGRAPHY The process of creating a print from a glass plate. WRAP A strand of glass, typically but not always of a contrasting color, applied hot to a vessel. ZANFIRICO A multi-colored cane made by gathering a bundle of rods of different colors, and heating it until it is soft. The bundle is attached to two pontils and elongated by drawing. At the same time, the bundle is twisted to produce a spiral pattern. Zanfirico, is a synonym for vetro a retorti.
