New Leadership at Habitat ReStore Danville, Virginia, July 29, 2016 The Danville- Pittsylvania Habitat for Humanity ReStore is pleased to announce the hiring of Gregg Mason as their new store manager. A longtime Danville resident, Mason had been volunteering at the store for over a year, and acting as the assistant manager for the last several months. According to Kristie Ballard, DPC Habitat’s Affiliate Administrator, “Gregg has been a true asset to Habitat, demonstrating his heart for this ministry first as a volunteer picking up donations, and now as a staff member, embracing all aspects of the ReStore operation. He has a lot of new ideas for growing the ReStore as well as emphasizing the life-changing work that Habitat for Humanity accomplishes in this community. We are blessed to

have him as a part of the Habitat family.” Mason is excited about his new responsibilities and looks forward to contributing to the store’s growth and impact. “The store is a great area resource for people looking for building supplies, furniture, and appliances. I see it as more than a store. It is Habitat and customers entering a partnership. This partnership begins when the ReStore provides valuable merchandise and when the customer makes a purchase. The resulting partnership creates revenue for our Habitat and its volunteers to build local affordable housing,” Mason explained. “Our inventory is always changing. Though we try to focus our niche on new and used building supplies, furniture, and appliances, our inventory is only limited to our donations that come through the door. ” The ReStore is located in the Dan River Church Plaza (formerly the Value City shopping center). The store was relocated from its Hughes Street address over a year ago to its current location. Mason stresses, “We still need to get the word out about our store’s new location and being an organization that people in the community can donate their tax deductible items to. We are humbled and encouraged by the generosity of the people and organizations that have given to the store, but we know there are potentially more out their willing to do so.” Mason will also attempt to secure more volunteers to help around the store. “Habitat for Humanity is a people-based organization, and I’m looking forward to working with more people,” Mason says with a grin. “We always need extra hands to clean, repair, price, and rearrange inventory. These hands can be of an individual, a group of friends, or an organization that is looking for a way to serve the community. I encourage folks to check out our Facebook page to see the list of volunteer opportunities.” Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity is completing their 43rd house and will begin work on the next home later this summer. For more information concerning the local ReStore and ministry of Habitat call 434.793.3630, visit the affiliate and ReStore facebook pages or visit the website at www.danvillehabitat.org.

Because of an ear infection, Little Johnny, had to go to the pediatrician. The doctor directed his comments and questions to Little Johnny in a professional manner. When he asked Little Johnny, “Is there anything you are allergic to?” Little Johnny nodded and whispered in his ear. Smiling, the pediatrician wrote out a prescription and handed it to Little Johnny’s mother. She tucked it into her purse without looking at it. As the pharmacist filled the order, he remarked on the unusual food-drug interaction Little Johnny must have. Little Johnny’s mother looked puzzled until he showed her the label on the bottle. As per the doctor’s instructions, it read, “Do not take with broccoli.”

Other religions go so far as to say that those who reject their message are to be forced to convert, and killed if they apostatize. The totality of world religions is therefore not at all like a wagon wheel. They all start at different points, take radically different paths, and end at different destinations. Our question then becomes, which one is correct? The God who made us has clearly made us to seek him out, and therefore has surely left us a revelation of himself for us to follow. We live in a free country, and everyone is welcome to peacefully and respectfully speak up as to why they believe their religion is the correct one. What one cannot logically do is claim that things which are in diametrical opposition to each other in so many essential aspects are all correct or even somehow the same thing. Having read many, many books from religions ranging from popular to obscure, and having studied their founders and history, I have concluded that what Jesus said of himself in John 14:6 is utterly, thoroughly true, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

AntiInflammatory Before Surgery

levels of anesthesia. Only some of them were given the drug. The testing was doubleblind, which means none of the participants or researchers knew who was getting what. The bottom line: All participants were tested on Days 3, 7, 21, 90 and 180 after surgery, with their cognitive and mental skills compared to their pre-surgery levels. The group that had superficial anesthesia plus the drug had 15.3 percent post-operative cognitive dysfunction, but within six months all those patients had returned to the pre-surgery testing levels. If you’re scheduled for surgery, have a talk with your doctor and your surgeon about the level of anesthesia you’re likely to receive. Deep anesthesia might not be required, and it shouldn’t be done routinely. Ask about the dexamethasone, too. Not everyone can take it, but it’s worth asking about if it helps preserve cognitive function.

--In too many senior patients, going under general anesthesia for surgery can leave a lingering problem with impaired concentration or memory. It’s called post-operative cognitive dysfunction, and in some cases, the effects might be permanent. The potential damage can depend on the degree of anesthesia. Add that to the trauma of the surgery itself, and there can be damage to the central nervous system. A study done in Brazil might have an answer to this growing problem: a drug called dexamethasone, an antiinflammatory. If given before an operation, the drug can help avoid problems while under anesthesia. (c) 2016 King Features For this study, Synd., Inc. researchers looked at 140 patients (ages 60 to 87) and gave pre-surgery tests to determine their mental status. During surgery itself, the patients were Red Bird Times divided into four groups Sponsored and were given varying

After about seven years, the three young men were able to make almost the whole movie -- except for the killer airplane fight scene. Now in their 40s, two of those Dr. Jones fanatics reunite to finish what they started. 1. Were the McGuire Sisters really related? 2. Who had a hit with “Fool Number One”? 3. Which group wrote and released “I Want to Make the World Turn Around,” and when? 4. Name the singer who was born Ernest Evans. 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “The wild and windy night that the rain washed away, Has left a pool of tears crying for the day.” Answers 1. Yes. Dorothy, Phyllis and Christine were sisters from Ohio. It’s said the group broke up when they were blackballed because one of them was in a personal relationship with a famous mobster. 2. Brenda Lee, in 1961. She was only 16 at the time, fully a professional even at that age. 3. The Steve Miller Band, in 1986. Kenny G did a sax solo on the song. 4. Chubby Checker, of “Twist” fame. 5. “The Long and Winding Road,” by the Beatles, 1970. It was their last of 20 U.S. No. 1 singles. A short time later when co-writer Paul McCartney went to court to legally dissolve the band, he pointed to producer Phil Spector’s modifications to the song as being one reason why. When shopping for a home, it’s easy for buyers to fall in love with a property. A well-maintained home with updated features can be hard to resist, but buyers must consider more than just a home’s appearance before submitting an offer. One variable prospective home buyers tend to value more highly than others is the neighborhood where they will ultimately choose to live. Many buyers even value neighborhoods more than homes, feeling they can always fix a home but cannot necessarily fix an undesirable neighborhood. When considering which neighborhood to begin a home search, buyers should research a host of factors. Crime Crime statistics are public domain, meaning buyers can examine crime figures for any neighborhood where they are considering buying a home. Some real estate websites list neighborhood crime ratings among the information they offer about a given property. In addition, buyers interested in learning about crime in a given neighborhood can visit a site such as CrimeReports.com to access data on crimes committed near a particular address. Home values Home values are another factor to consider when choosing a neighborhood in which to buy a home. Buyers can work with a local realtor to find a neighborhood or area where real estate prices are trending upwards. While buyers might be able to find a great deal on a home in a neighborhood where home prices are dropping, it’s important to remember those home prices are dropping for a reason. Work with your realtor to find a neighborhood where you can afford a home and where property values are not in decline. Realtors will have access to recent sales figures so you can get an idea of whether a neighborhood is trending upward or in decline. Amenities The proximity of amenities such as shopping, restaurants and parks is attractive to many buyers, and that’s something all buyers should consider before buying a home. Even if you prefer a home in a remote location, that could limit your market of buyers when you want to sell the home down the road. While your own comfort and preferences should ultimately prevail over potential resale value, it’s important that you at least consider access to amenities before making a decision. You might be able to find a compromise in a home that is a short drive away from a town center, but still remote enough that you are not in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Commute Quality of life is heavily influenced by commute time. Many men and women feel their quality of life improves dramatically the shorter their daily commute is. When considering a particular neighborhood, do a test run before making an offer on a home. Wake up early and drive to the area where you are thinking of buying, and then commute from there during rush hour. Also, do the reverse commute come quitting time. You might be able to get an estimated commute time online, but a test run can give you a more accurate idea of what your daily trips to and from the office will be like. Choosing a neighborhood where you will enjoy living requires some forethought and research.

Abbie Cobb Photo credit: abbiecobb.com Q: I love seeing “Suburgatory” co-star Carly Chaikin in USA’s “Mr. Robot.” Can you tell me what some of the other cast members are up to now? -- Linda F., via email A: Abbie Cobb, who played Kimantha in the hilarious ABC comedy, currently stars in the movie “Boy in the Attic,” along with Max Lloyd-Jones and Gina Holden. Abbie stars as Callie, a 17-year-old girl who, following the death of her grandmother, inherits her grandmother’s house with her mother, Rachel. As they get ready to put it up for sale, she discovers an 18-year-old boy has been living in the attic for months. When the boy tells Callie why he has been hiding there, she agrees to keep his secret from everyone, including her mother. The movie premieres Saturday, Aug. 20, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime. *** Q: I loved “The Following,” especially because it starred my favorite actor, Kevin Bacon. Can you tell me what he’s doing now? -- Sally T., via email A: Kevin is teaming up with his equally talented wife, Kyra Sedwick, in “Story of a Girl,” which is slated to begin production for Lifetime in September and is based on the book of the same name by Sara Zarr. With this film, Kyra makes her directorial debut, and Kevin stars in this powerful coming-ofage story about a teen who must deal with the ramifications of a sex video that

goes viral. When the sex video of 13-year-old Deanna Lambert and Tommy, her older brother’s best friend, hits the Internet, her life of carefree innocence is changed forever. Three years later, Deanna is still dealing with the fallout of the video, including being branded the school slut and bearing the burden of the daily taunts from her classmates. Her home life is even more troublesome because her father’s anger and disappointment over the incident has left him unable to look her in the eye. Ready to move on, Deanna longs to escape a life defined by the mistakes of her past. *** Q: Rick Springfield was absolutely awesome on ABC’s “Greatest Hits” premiere. What else does he have in the pipeline? -Marian E. in Florida A: The producers of the CW’s long-running fantasy drama “Supernatural” confirmed that the ‘80s rock star will play the role of Lucifer in the show’s first few episodes of the 12th season, which premieres Thursday, Oct. 13, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Rick -- who’s been gaining solid acting cred for his much-talked-about roles in “Ricki and the Flash” opposite Meryl Streep, as well as “True Detective” -- will play Vince Vincente, whose body the devil decides to use as his vessel now that he’s done possessing Castiel. “The first vessel that [Lucifer] feels comfortable with is a rock star who’s a little bit on the down side who’s trying to come back,” executive producer Robert Singer revealed during the “Supernatural” panel at Comic-Con in July. Using Credit Cards Wisely credit = better credit score Increasing available

30% of your credit score is infl uenced by the amount of credit that is available to you. For this reason you do not want your credit cards to be near their limit. Example: If you have a credit card that has a $1,000.00 limit and you have a balance of $200.00 then you have 80% of credit available to you on that credit card. If you have a balance of $999.99 then you have no credit available. Keep balances low to increase the capacity you have on your credit report. In addition to this do not close accounts that you are not using. When you close those accounts you are decreasing the credit that is available. Increasing your capacity (available credit) is the second largest factor on your credit report. Remember keep balances low and keep accounts open.

For the pasta and the remainder of the dish: Bring a large pot of water to a boil, and cook the pasta accordion toe the directions on the package.
