Artist rendering of Jasper Gates Condominiums located at 10140 -150 street. The project will commence this Summer with completion in Winter of 2012.

JASPER GATES CONDOMINIUMS A Luxurious Take on Sustainable Living Located in the desirable west-end community of Canora, Jasper Gates Condominiums is Edmonton’s newest address for the 40-plus urban dweller. The three-story condo complex combines the luxury of commercial amenities on its first floor, with exceptionally designed residential condos located above. Beljan Development president and Jasper Gates Condominiums developer, Ivan Beljan, is committed to building sustainable residences within Edmonton which will “revitalize and rejuvenate the older neighbourhoods in the city, and ultimately bring Edmontonians back to living closer to the city’s core.” His vision for reviving Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods, and providing a sustainable living environment and lifestyle is a refreshing initiative for the city. Strategically situated off Stony Plain Rd. and 150th St., the property is near the newly approved west LRT leg, allowing residents to enjoy easy access to public transportation. There is also no shortage of amenities nearby, with the neighbourhood boasting numerous shopping, grocery and pharmacy locations. The scenic River Valley is a short walk away, providing any outdoor enthusiast with plenty of bike and walking trails through the numerous picturesque parks. For those more interested in the urban lifestyle, West Edmonton Mall is a few minutes away offering the ultimate shopping and entertainment destinations, and a quick commute will take residents to the city centre.

Insidethis issue

The 20 suites have been professionally designed by Edmonton-based CK Design Associates Inc., and offer three finish packages to choose from. Floor plans maximize space and functionality, with the choice of one-bedroom or one-bedroom-plus-den suites. Each modern condo also features a convenient in-suite laundry room, and spacious balcony complete with barbecue outlet – perfect for entertaining! Condos, which range from 658 to 777 sq. ft., have the added benefit of nine-ft. ceilings that complement the openconcept design. A doublesided fireplace adds warmth to the home, while hardwood floors, upgraded stainless steel appliances and attractive granite countertops all enhance the interior eye appeal. Visual charm and outstanding location aren’t the only features Jasper Gates Condominiums has to offer. The development has been designed with superior engineering that pays detailed attention to the sound environment of the homeowners. Concrete separates each of the three levels of the condominiums, dramatically eliminating sound between each floor. Also, residents can be sure their home maintains a private atmosphere with the upgraded sound insulation feature separating their suite from their neighbours’. Beljan has taken into account that security is an integral component to a condo owner’s peace of mind, and is providing residents with a secure

underground parking garage that is protected by card entry. Jasper Gates residents will also benefit from monitoring the parkade through security cameras, streaming live images to their personal televisions. Plus, with the abundance of street-level parking situated around the condominiums, homeowners don’t need to worry about visitor parking space limitations for their guests. Jasper Gates Condominiums seamlessly balances the needs of Edmonton’s mature condo seeker, providing a modern and sustainable living environment with the feeling of luxury. Beljan is “dedicated to providing a superior product” to all condo owners, and with prices starting at $239,000 with a $10,000 discount on all presales, now is the time to become a part of the Jasper Gates Condominiums Community!

While we're probably due for a last gasp snowfall from winter this month, I think it's warmed up enough to safely discuss leaving hibernation and venturing out into spring/construction season. In that vein, I'd like to talk about things to do here in our own backyard. One of the topics currently being championed by a number of organizations and Community Leagues across the city are the benefits to be had by “Living Local”. What does this entail? It means taking full advantage of the services and amenities close to home, the benefits of which can go far beyond simply being able to put to better use, time, which could have been used raising blood-pressure while being stuck in traffic.

One of the obvious benefits of being out and about in your home community is the sense of vibrancy it can create - not just for the viability and sustainability of local business and local economies, but the interaction within a community. The activity, the “eyes on the street”, Photo by Jim Wooley makes for a safer community. The demand for and halls, it's great. If you would like to join us in playing in the dirt, give me a call at (780)484-1777. We will supply coffee and goodies when the work is done. The 4th annual Mini-Carnival is fast approaching. J P R U P D AT E Community Clean Up Back for the Second Time

TISHA RAJ

A rotting sofa in the back alley, a discarded bed on the sidewalk or planks with rusty nails sticking out can definitely be a sight for the eyes. In an effort to enhance community wellness and beautify the communities surrounding Stony Plain Road, last June, the Jasper Place Revitalization with other key community partners and volunteers held a community clean up event. A grand total of 20 tonnes of garbage was collected from the neighbourhoods of West Jasper Place, Canora, Britannia-Youngstown and Glenwood. The event was organized by the City of Edmonton and coordinators from St. Paul's Anglican Church. St. Paul's Anglican Church also recruited their own youth volunteers from other neighbouring churches.

Ten refuse dumpsters were designated at various locations with many community residents volunteering their time to assist local residents dropping off unwanted household items. Meanwhile there were groups of volunteers who went round the neighbourhoods to pick up litter and garbage scattered on the ground.

Two U-Haul trucks collected discarded items in the back alleys along Stony Plain Road and from some residents who needed an extra hand removing large household items from their homes. The day ended with a volunteer appreciation and community barbeque to celebrate the success of the event.

Due to the success of the event, another clean up will be held June 11, 2011. We will be renting refuse bins and strategically placing them throughout the area. The June SPURR will contain the locations of the bins. If you would like further info, or to volunteer, contact Steve Gauley at 944-5417, or email steve.gauley@edmonton.ca.

COLD WEATHER CROPS Spring in Edmonton is slow to show itself this year. I still have mounds of snow in the shady spots of my yard, but have faith that they will soon disappear. This may be the perfect year for cold weather veggies, some tried and true, and some new ones such as Bok Choi, Rapini or Leeks. Crops that I've grown before in early Spring are the usual peas, lettuce, spinach. Not very interesting or unusual, but fairly easy to grow and reliable. I will grow them again this year, of course, but am going to try a couple of cold weather veggies I haven't grown before such as leeks and rapini.

S P U R R M AY 2 0 1 1

Leeks (a national emblem of Wales) are the mildest of the onion family. They can be started indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost which, in Edmonton, is anywhere from mid May to early June, or (my preference) buy the seedlings and transplant into your garden. I found a ham and leek quiche recipe I'm itching to try once my leeks are harvested, usually in early to mid September. It is an essential ingredient in Cock-aleekie soup and in vichyssoise. Leeks were Emperor Nero's favourite vegetable, and he claimed they improved his voice. They are a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin K and folate. Rapini is a member of the cabbage family. It looks like very thin young broccoli and is often called broccholini, broccoli raab and spring broccoli, but is not broccoli at all. It can be used raw in salads, or steamed lightly, or used in stir fry. Do not overcook. It is a very good source of phytochemicals, which help protect Continued on page 5

against cancer. Rapini needs to grow in fertile, well drained soil in cool temperatures, as hot weather will cause it to bolt. One cold weather veggie that I have grown the past couple of years, with great success, is bok choi. I have planted it from seed directly into the garden, but it does have a tendency to bolt (like rapini and spinach) with hot temperatures. Seed three weeks before the frost free date, and again in late August or early

September for a fall crop. It can be eaten at every stage from baby greens to mature plants, and is wonderful braised, in stir frys and soups, and raw in salads. Try something different this year in your garden. For the price of a package of seeds or a few seedlings, you might find a new favourite veggie and (heaven forbid) your kids or grandkids might like it!!! Until next month, Happy Gardening.
