The wolf is the symbol of the natural heritage in the northwest of Zamora. The Sierra de la Culebra and Sanabria, area with the largest densities of this specie in the European Union, therefore, it is the ideal place to leam about its biology, its ecology, and to know about the wolves threats and its interactions with men, which generate a huge cultural heritage. The twilight and nocturnal habits of the wolf advise the best moments during the day for try to see it, so that, at sunrise and at sunset (when wolves finish or start their nocturnal activity) is the best time to do the sighting of wolf in the Sierra de la Culebra or in the mountains of Sanabria. With telescopes and binoculars, from high with good visibility, enjoying amidst breathtaking scenary, we will do several sightings of the wolf, the deer and the groups or red deer females or wid boars.

We will listen to the experiences and point of view of a sheep herder which has a lot of chance encounters with the wolves which protects his flock with the wonderful spanish mastiff. Regarding to the cultural legacy of the wolf, we will visit Barjacoba. Barjacoba is a small and isolated village of upper Sanabria. One kilometer from the town, on a hillside, there are a historic stone trap to capture wolves known as “Curro de los lobos�. With probably medieval origin, it was used until the middle of the last century. This magnificent trap will introduce us into the coexistence between wolves and men, and into the mythical and legendary wolf. Around the fireplace we will enjoy the stories and tales of the traditional culture from Sanabria, where the wolf is the protagonist.

Program FRIDAY 19:30 Reception of participants - Conference: “The prospect for the Iberian wolf: Sierra de la Culebra and Natural Park of Lago de Sanabria”. Dinner - The grandfather’s legacy: Traditional stories of Sanabria about the wolf around the fireplace.
Guide 24h. OO Includes: activities, accident insurance, full board accommodation and traditional cuisine (if allergy or incompatibility with some food, contact with us before arrival). OO Excludes vehicles, but if you need it is possible to rent a car. OO Optical material is available for observation, but it is recommended that participants bring their binoculars or telescopes also. It is important to be well equipped with dark and shelterclothing. OO All activities are directed and guided by Javier Talegón (Biologist) and / or Jose Luis Santiago (Forest Engineer), both with extensive experience and knowledge of the wolf and the natural values of the Northwest of Zamora.
