Davao City School wins National Search for Eco-Friendly Schools Davao City – Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School in Matina won 3rd prize during the recently concluded National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools. The school received a total of PhP 30,000 award during the awarding ceremony held at SM North Edsa. The First prize winner is Camarines Sur National High School in Naga City and the second prize winner is San Jose Recoletos High School, Cebu City. These were schools bested all the other 14 competing high schools all over the country. Likewise, Luna Elementary School in Kapalong, Davao del Norte is among those declared regional champions for elementary level while Davao Doctors College, Davao City is the regional champion for the college level. Sponsored by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) together with the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Smart Communication Inc., the said nationwide competition aims to recognize educational

institutions from elementary to college levels with the best sustainable and environment-friendly programs and activities. It is the Philippines’ Initiative in support to the ASEAN Environmental Education Action Plan (2008-2012) and the United Nations Decade of Education for sustainable Development (2005-2014). DENR-XI Regional Executive Director Jim O Sampulna congratulates the winners from Region XI. “I am very proud of this accomplishment of the schools here in the region. It only shows their current environmental programs, activities and efforts to help save Mother Earth. These schools are worthy of emulation and they should be considered as a challenge to other schools to further improve their environmental programs. Indeed, Region XI is always in the forefront in the pursuit for environmental management,” Sampulna added. Sampulna further said that DENR-XI will go from school to school to conduct advocacy campaign on the fight against climate change. (Bing S. Cordova, DENR-XI/PR)
