Local governments have learned a lot from Typhoon ‘Yolanda’, says Palace official MANILA - Local government units (LGUs) have learned to follow the safety guidelines set by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) following the onslaught of Typhoon ‘Yolanda’ last year, a Palace official said on Wednesday.

Now that the country is facing another strong storm, to be called Typhoon ‘Ruby’ once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility, LGUs are expected to prepare and coordinate with national agencies to minimize damage and avoid casualties,

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said during the daily press briefing. The administration’s goal, he said, is to ensure zero casualty during typhoons and other calamities.

Caraga RDC meets the private sector for Corporate Partners’ Forum By: Sherwin E. Verdun

BUTUAN CITY - The Caraga Regional Development Council (RDC) met the private sector for the first-ever Corporate Partners’ Forum, Tuesday, December 2. The participants were oriented on the Regional Development Council and its roles and functions. They were also introduced to the Revised Caraga Regional Development Plan (RDP) 2013-2016 and their role in its implementation. The Caraga RDC believes that the attainment of inclusive growth depends on the participation of the private sector. The private sector generates jobs, provides goods and services, and contributes to public revenue necessary for economic and social welfare. Thus, the private sector helps fight poverty by providing income to households from jobs in the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises established. With jobs, people are able to buy goods and services that would improve their quality of life. The revenues generated from the enterprises created help the government provide better social services

to the people. The private sector is also seen as an important external income source and a domestic resource influencer. They provide micro-financing, savings deposit, and access to loan opportunities. However, for the private sector to continuously support socio-economic progress, they need enabling environment and mechanism to support business development. Hence, they needed to be oriented on the Revised Caraga RDP 2013-2016.

through the Integrated Gender and Development Division (IGDD). Prior to the signing, three women leaders from the K’Lata tribe, Moro and Christian communities shared different experiences and views on women abuses in their respective societies. Atty. IGDD officer-incharge Lorna Mandin said eradicating VAWC remains an urgent task even with the crafting and implementation of international, national and local legislations aiming at comprehensively addressing the issue. Mandin bared that IGDD recorded 1,041 cases of VAWC from the office’s walk-in clients in 2013, which included mostly rape, physical assault, and economic abuse. Mandin underscored the intensified advocacy among various sectors in the locality as one of the essential mechanisms to address the pressing issue. The IGDD has been spearheading since November 12 this year, several activities such as fora/orientation on VAWC, political and public rights of women and human trafficking, and VAWC trainers’ training.
