This was announced Wednesday by DOE Undersecretary Loreta G. Ayson at a press conference on the wrapping up of the project in June this year. PEEP is an Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded project with a loan amount of ,100,000 and a Philippine government counterpart fund amounting to P625 million. It is aimed at implementing energy saving measures to help curb growing energy demand. Ayson said the project involves three components which are the:1) efficient lighting initiatives thru the distribution of 8,600,000 Compact Flourescent Lamps (CFLs) in households nationwide, retrofitting of public lighting systems; 2) efficiency initiatives in buildings; and 3) communication and social mobilization focused on campaign for efficient lighting. In the public lighting retrofittings, savings generated reached about 794.5 kwh valued at P45 million a year, Ayson said adding that retrofitting of government lighting systems numbered to 150 government buildings of which 15 are in Mindanao. In Davao City, PEEP project thru CFLs and retrofitting of government buildings has generated a energy 10

consumption savings of about 37,530 KWH valued at P375,399 per year. In the first batch of 5 million CFLs, 2 million went to Mindanao distributed by electric distributors and cooperatives. In the second batch of 3.6 million CFLS, each congressional district in Davao City received 10,000 CFLs. The efficient lighting initiatives of the project also include the provision of solar home systems with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) in 223 households in selected offgrid areas. Ayson said the reduced electricity demand would consequently reduce the overall need for additional generation capacity of about 243 MW and will avoid large amount of carbon dioxide emissions. DOE hoped the PEEP project would help establish sustainable business models for large-scale replication of energy-efficiency programs in the future.
