Long live the hot summers! If you are like most Permanent residents of Phoenix, AZ you don’t look forward to the hot summer in the Valley of the Sun. However, It is a great time for outdoor family activities. Water Parks, Swimming, and Traveling are among the most popular. Picture google. Com/images

There is nothing like trying to keep the kids entertained for the summer. So here are a few ideas.. 1. Park Time.. Arizona has many parks that offer a number of beautiful scenery. Pack up a picnic, the sunscreen, a Frisbee, and the family dog and head for a day to remember! 2. Water Day.. Yay! Cool off in your backyard or head to your favorite water park. You’re sure to wear out the kids. Be sure to watch your children around water! 3.Bike Riding.. Get up early and find the perfect bike path and roll on. Don’t forget to wear a helmet. 4. Hiking… Arizona offers some of the most prestige hiking trails. Fresh air, and exercise can be refreshing and rejuvenating. 5. Backyard fun in the Sun! Play tag football, light up the grill, swim like a fish or hook up the waterslide. Just remember to protect yourself from the harsh rays of the sun..

G

oal Setting Strategies By Carmen Parks with Life By Design, LLC

2015 is almost halfway over. How are you doing on your 2015 New Year’s Resolutions? Have you forgotten about them or maybe you’re not quite where you want to be. Maybe after 6 months you’ve changed them completely and have a whole new set of goals. Either way, you are in luck. Here is a proven 6-step system that can get you to your goals faster, easier and without unnecessary stress.

Step 1: Believe In Yourself. Believing in yourself is a choice. Doubting yourself only means you are standing in the way of your own progress. You can choose to believe the voices that say “you can’t” “it’s too hard” “who are you do be great?” Or you can have a rebuttal. Responses to the discouraging self-talk can be “I’m not there yet but I’m making progress” “It is hard but I’m getting better every day” “I am great and honestly it’s time for me to shine!” Part of believing in yourself is being able to imagine what it will be like when you reach your goal. Write down what you will see, hear, feel when you reach your goal. Who will be there with you? How will you feel? It is a great motivator to imagine this moment every single day! If you want some guidance you can download a free step-by-step worksheet for believing in yourself at HowToBelieveInYourself.com

Step 2: Outline SMART Goals. SMART Goals are Specific, Measurable, Attractive, Realistic and Timely. Specific – well defined, clear to anyone that has a basic knowledge of the subject. Measurable – Know if the goal is obtainable and how far away completion is. Know when it has been achieved. Attractive – Know why it’s important to reach this goal. Realistic – Within the availability of resources, knowledge and time. Time Based – enough time to achieve the goal, not too much time, which can affect performance. For additional guidance, download a free SMART Goal worksheet at ImproveYourGoalSettingSkills.com

Ultimate Woman International June/ July 2015

Step 3: Create Plan. It’s time to create action steps. What do you want to accomplish each day, each week or each month? This is for you to decide. How are you going to get from where you are now to where you want to be? Also make sure to include milestones so that you can celebrate when you get to Step 6.

Step 4: Take Action. This is the step that most people forget and it is a step that must be done. We tend to have all of these great ideas and amazing goals but we forget that we must actually DO something in order to get to that “somewhere.” This is sometimes the hardest part. But once you get going, momentum starts to build and before you know it you’re taking action and visualizing your way to your goals.

Step 5: Adjust As Needed. Sometimes life happens and our original plan gets derailed. That doesn’t mean we need to stop moving. We can recognize these events as opportunities to adjust. Unexpected obstacles aren’t reasons to turn back. Adjustments may require self-improvement changes as well as changes in time frame, action steps or even a change in the final goal itself. And that’s ok.

Step 6: Celebrate Little and Big Successes. These are milestones you included in your plan. When you reach a milestone, have a reward for yourself identified. Sweeten the deal for yourself. You’ve been working hard and deserve to celebrate. Remember that it’s not easy to reach a goal you’ve never achieved before. The key is to always be patient and kind to yourself. If you have a setback, it’s simply an opportunity to adjust. Identify what caused the setback so you can be better prepared next time a similar situation arises.

Five Tips for the Busy Woman to Balance Work and Home Life Are you a self-employed woman or you have a demanding position where you have to be “on” all the time? Congratulations! You have worked hard and made your dreams a reality. Now the part that no one warns you about; you have grown heavy with responsibilities and you feel torn in several directions. What can you do?

Firstly, I want you all to realize one thing before

Schedule your time. Schedule everything. Set

you read any further. You are not alone. Every woman feels the pressure balancing a career or a business with your personal life. You think you can do it all and you multitask like a pro….the laundry is cooked, the dinner is cleaned, and the bills are scrubbed, while all the time you are on the phone with THAT client. Wait, what? It is easy to become Twitchy. We have all had those days where we feel overwhelmed with life and work feeling like we are drowning.

blocks of time for household chores just like you would a client. It doesn’t have to be a large chunk of time, but if it is scheduled it stops you from going down the household “rabbit hole.” One load of laundry turns into finishing the laundry, ironing, scrubbing the floors and straightening the family room. Before you know it, your entire day has been eaten up and you weren’t productive in your business. This doesn’t apply only to chores, it applies to everything! You can even schedule family time. Schedule special dinners, school events, and kid’s sporting events, fun events with the kids or your spouse or just kid reading time. Scheduling this time may sound like overkill to some of you, but trust me it works. It absolves the guilt while being with your family instead of working your business. It’s on your schedule after all – so you are being productive and not ignoring your family. It’s a Win-Win! And remember, you are in charge of your own schedule so you don’t have to be tied to the 9-5 time limitations. If you need two hours in the middle of the day to attend your child’s talent show – you have that freedom. Just remember to replace that two hours somewhere else on your schedule. Maybe it means you have to work after dinner or early in the morning. Guess what? It is your schedule, you control it. Organize it as you need to.

YOU must come first. You cannot take care of your clients or your family without taking care of yourself. Eat right, exercise, and never compromise your “ME” time. Schedule at least a half hour a day where you can journal, walk, do yoga, paint, read or whatever it is that helps you center yourself. I take an hour every morning to walk my dogs and write in my journal. It grounds me and starts my day on a positive note. Because I refuse to let go of this hour, I do not schedule events before 9:00 am and I often refuse to answer my phone or emails before then as well. There has been the inevitable event that I HAVE to attend, but for the most part I start my day off with this important “Me” time. I do not compromise on this because once I compromise it is easy to head down a slippery slope and I end up with no time for myself. Ultimate Woman International June/ July 2015

Pay yourself a salary and give yourself permission to treat yourself. So many of us business owners make sure the bills are paid, payroll is met, the clients are taken care of, and we forget our most precious employee – ourselves. Give yourself permission to treat yourself – whatever that means to you. Pay yourself a salary each month. If your business is just starting out, it can be a token amount, but transfer it to your personal account and log it as salary. You worked hard and you earned it! Now you have the choice about what to do with it. Splurge on that pedicure or put the money in savings. The choice is yours. Because you deserve it.

When you are working, work hard and focus (no time for “Squirrel!”). You scheduled this work time, so give it your all. You wouldn’t want one of your employees or one of your vendors to do a half-baked job on your assignment, so don’t do it to them. Block out distractions and keep on task. Sometimes this is harder than it sounds. For example, as part of my business, I comb the internet looking for inspirational quotes, pictures, articles and whatever. I use social media in my business so I block out time in my schedule for Facebook and Linkedin. BUT there are days I can easily get distracted with the latest detox water recipe, the cute pictures my niece posted or the rant my sister went off on. FOCUS. Stay on task and avoid sabotaging yourself and your most precious commodity. Your time. Finally, say NO with a smile. Do not overextend yourself. NO is not a dirty word, and it is a complete sentence. Do you work with three different non-profit organizations that are eating into your family and work schedule? Figure out which one feeds your passion and focus on just that one. Did you guilt-commit and agree to not only be on the PTA but to become the president? Learn to say thank you, but NO for both personal and professional requests. If it doesn’t fit into your schedule, then the answer is no. The time you spend on your business needs to produce income, and the time with your family needs to be quality time. If that is where you want to focus, then take the steps to make it happen. Advertising isn't sexy it’s Necessary Many Business owners dread advertising their business. But the truth is that if you don’t put the word out about your business you won’t be in Business. It really comes down to what avenues are available, how effective they will be, timing and cost. Let’s talk about the different types of advertising for just a moment. You could put an ad in print, like a newspaper, magazine, social media, or if you like even stand on the corner dressed up, but depending on your budget some of these will cost money, others will cost time. However, they can reach your target market instantaneously and be effective. So try some and see which ones you like best and stick with them. Do try other things you might be surprised at who you might meet.

Next, Understanding the importance of advertising in a multitude of places will be key to your success and maximize your exposure. Learn about the timing of advertising for your businesses. For instance in certain parts of the country business slows down. Like Arizona, it’s HOT! So What, right? I find that some business owners are charging full speed ahead with not boundaries. Wise! That way you are staying consistent and being an efficient marketer. Congratulations. It’s takes years to achieve this critical part of your business. Now let’s not forget about the cost of advertising. If you have a business plan like most do or need too, you can stay on budget for the most part but, this also needs to have some flexibility. Advertising costs can get out of control. Find some of the best avenues that have a cost that will allow you to advertise in several places at one time.

There will come the occasional time when you find a new venue for advertising your business. If it makes sense make it happen! Now let’s wrap up with these final thoughts. To get the results you desire, have a plan and stick to it. You will of course need follow through. I like the article “Goal Setting” by Carmen Parks featured in this issue of Ultimate Woman International.
