In these pages you will find examples of many different arts organizations that exist in and around Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun. The Phoenix Festival of the Arts, the first signature arts festival in the city of Phoenix, is designed with the theme “unifying the arts” – bringing together the Valley’s numerous arts organizations, performers, vendors, adults and youth so that you can see just how much art the City has to offer. This year, as many as 80 local artists and arts organizations are featured along with as many as 80 performing artists from a diverse array of genres. Hosted by Phoenix Center for the Arts, the Phoenix Festival of the Arts will become an annual tradition. Please take this book home or to your office. Use it to find arts events and activities. Plan to attend, support and share. Be sure to look in the back for some special coupons! Thank you and enjoy the festival!

Welcome to the inaugural

Thank you for attending and for your interest in the arts. I have a personal connection to the power of the arts to change and save lives because it’s what kept me in school as a young man. Arts and culture are an integral part of my personal and professional life. What are some of your early memories from school? Were they exams or assignments? They were probably a school recital, play, or performance. As children we feel the power of the arts as we learn about ourselves and each other through the natural play that happens. However, as we grow not everyone becomes an artist and that’s what makes this world work. Some people will sing a song and realize that they were meant to be a chemist! Arts and culture exist all around us: here at the festival; on the walls of your home or office; but also in architecture, clothing, and in the digital realm. As our theme “Unifying the Arts” suggests, it’s my hope that you will use this weekend and this book to expand your own horizons a bit and invite art into your life. See the difference it makes. Enjoy the festival, and we look forward to seeing you next year as well as throughout the year at The Center, which has been dedicated to making the arts truly unique, affordable and enjoyable since 1975. Special thank yous to Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and his staff, Lou & Evelyn Grubb, and our sponsors and partners, and much appreciation to the coordinators and volunteers for their tireless efforts in making this event a reality.
