Hemingway’s Various Dining Areas Provide a Moveable Feast You can t help but feel that Ernest would have approved. Papa would have fitted in nicely at the new Habana cocktail bar at the recently opened Sukhumvit eatery which bears his name, sipping a dry martini at sunset as the ornamental fountain in the lush garden provided the background to some strident jazz. The two level restaurant is a shrine to the adventurous lifestyle that the larger than life writer enjoyed, with whole sections of the establishment devoted to African, Caribbean and Spanish themes. Owner Damian Mackay, from Western Australia, has created a menu that has also been very heavily influenced by Hemingway s spheres of operation. Intriguing dishes on the rich menu include: Patatas Bravas with Mojo Rojo and Saffron Aioli, Spanish Mix, Chilli Salt Fried Squid with Hemingway s own Tartar Sauce, Classic Anchor Bar Buffalo Wings with Hot Sauce and Blue Cheese Dressing, Sea Bass with Hemingway s Oyster and Absinthe Broth, Steamed Mussels and Braised Lettuce, La Scala Chopped Salad, Imported Hard Salami, Mozzarella Cheese, Parma Ham, Pitted Olives and Shaved Parmesan on a bed of Chang Mai Cos Lettuce and Hemingway s Dressing. The beautiful old building that now houses Hemingway s was built over 90 years ago, within metres of what is now bustling Sukhumvit Road and the Sukhumvit/Asoke transport hub. Rare golden teak was used in the construction, and the building has served as a home to notable figures from Bangkok s past, including the Siamese Ambassador to Laos, the son of King Rama VIII s Royal Guardian. Hemingway s sits just inside Sukhumvit Soi 14, opens from 11.30 am until late, and provides their tempting meals and drink selections throughout the day. Diners can choose to linger in the airconditioned restaurant, the relaxing verdant garden, the Habana Bar or the upper deck Marlin Boulevard.
