Smiles. There are so many smiles after a game or storytelling. It’s an amazing thing for parents, too, a moment to let their guard down and smile during a time of worry.

PARTNERS THAT HEAL,

A W.O.N.D.E.R. PROJECT Partners That Heal, A W.O.N.D.E.R. Project team is an exceptional group of theatre professionals improving the quality of life for children and their families in healthcare and crisis facilities across the Valley. Through the power of storytelling, improvisational games and song, these advocates help patients express their feelings, understand their surroundings and engage with their caregivers.

The moment Conner finished camp, he’d say, ‘When can I go again?’ All a parent of a special needs child wants is for him to be happy and accepted wherever he goes, and the camp staff really impressed me. This is not just a special needs program. It boosted my son’s confidence and evolved his love of theatre. He wants to do more when he graduates.

- Kim B., Adventure Stage parent

ADVENTURE STAGE Through an annual workshop and summer camp experience, Adventure Stage provides children with autism spectrum disorders an opportunity for creative expression. Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center trains Phoenix Theatre teaching artists and camp counselors how to instruct children on the autism spectrum. Through immersive musical theatre activities, these students learn invaluable life skills, build self-confidence, and form lasting friendships.

THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES Theatre for Young Audiences empowers thousands of children through stories that illuminate, illustrate and emphasize universal themes including kindness, acceptance, courage and diversity. These professional actors bring re-inspired children’s literature and award-winning original works to life and invite the audience of youth ages 4-12 to interact in a live theatre experience; many of them for the first time.

I really appreciate the opportunity for my students to be able to attend the theater. Honestly, it’s not something they may ever be exposed to if it wasn’t for programs like this one. I think one of the best things I saw was a young man who rarely smiles, was belly-laughing through most of the show. It was a true blessing and I’m so thankful that he was able to let go and enjoy his time there.

SUMMER CAMP, MUSICAL

THEATRE WORKSHOPS, AND MASTER CLASSES At Phoenix Theatre, we are serious about having fun and providing a supportive and creative environment for children ages 4-18 to find their voice and develop their unique talents. Led by an impressive staff of professional teaching artists, camps, workshops and master classes are now offered year round to nurture the performing artist inside every child, promote confidence, and foster teamwork.

Phoenix Theatre’s Summer Camp and year-round Musical Theatre Workshops have become a must for our young son. He has deeply connected with his teachers, the counselors and with his fellow students and we’ve been so impressed by the positive changes we’ve seen in him. He understands more about ‘putting yourself in someone else’s shoes’, working with a team and his own creativity.

– Brock Halvorson, Summer Camp Parent

This season-long experience offers budding professionals an opportunity to gain experience in technical theatre crafts, trades and arts administration; leading to sustainable employment and widely transferable skills.

“

The Pope Professional Apprenticeship Program has strengthened my skills and given me growing confidence as a stage manager. My connection with Phoenix Theatre has allowed me to work at such places as the Santa Fe Opera and Maine State Music Theatre. Thanks, Phoenix Theatre. - Becky Roscinski, Former Pope Professional Apprentice

This renewed mission not only strengthens the future of theatre but fortifies Phoenix as a principal cultural destination.

The Hormel Festival stage readings provide an incomparable testing ground for new work. Feedback after a reading provides more lessons about how well my play works. Using this information, I write a new draft and test the play again, until I’m confident I’ve gotten it right.

- Rich Orloff, Previous Festival Playwright

HORMEL FESTIVAL OF NEW PLAYS AND MUSICALS

Each year, Phoenix Theatre receives hundreds of dynamic scripts from playwrights around the country. All are searching for the first opportunity to see their new work performed for an audience. The Hormel Festival of New Plays and Musicals provides a stripped down and intimate theatre environment where the words on the page are the focus and audience feedback plays a key role.
