The drawings of Michaël Borremans represent an unsettling juxtaposition of enigmatic characters with bizarre, often desolate landscapes that nevertheless convey a sense of something ordinary, like a window into the quotidian routine of another reality. Borremans uses a range of media for his drawings, the everyday materials from our own reality, such as old photographs, torn-off book covers and envelopes, together with a subdued palette of brown, black and green that evoke a certain banality in the depicted scene. This creates a void and a sense of confusion for the viewer as he is left to confront and accept the image that provides no explanation, but leaves a sense of surreal familiarity.

“Borremans’ oeuvre displays a very peculiar specificity in his use of draftsmanship, where one observes a kind of roman à clef of the artistic process. The map of his world is located in drawing, be it in the use of the same imagery as in his paintings (although in a more explicit form), in the pervasive graphemes that introduce the word, or the long, narrative captions. It is therefore in drawing that the subtly transformed body of characters is transgressed by incision, inscription, and sign. And it is also in Borremans’ drawings that one finds the creation – in a more radical way – of spaces that manipulate the representational scale, transforming it into a paradoxical scale that in turn itself becomes a theme. “This theme (the recurrence of the inadequacy of the body with respect to space and the unsuitableness of the precise gesture) becomes central, because the rigor exercised in its graphic rendering is intensified by the importance of the particular, the detail, the fragment.” (D. Marc Quinn first came to prominence as one of the YBAs in the late 1980s

Bruce Nauman’s acclaimed oeuvre comprises a vast range of media, including video, installation, neon lighting, drawing, sculpture, sound pieces and performances. His practice demonstrates an interest in the nature of communication, language and its intrinsic problems, issues that are often expressed in a playful and wicked way. As one of the most influential living artists, Bruce Nauman’s work is considered by most critics to be provocative, inventive and challenging, although some, such as Blake Gponik, refer to him as a contemporary classic. The American artist was recently awarded the prestigious Golden Lion as the US representative in the Venice Biennale 2009. The present lot, a graphite drawing depicting two pairs of disembodied and elegant hands resembles a later work entitled Fifteen Pairs of Hands (1996), presented at the Venice Biennale in 2009. The simple, graceful lines are characteristic in Nauman’s drawing, which make him come across as a “Post-minimalist artist, whose drawings are made with a minimum of fuss in order to record an idea or to see what something will look like” (R. Smith, ‘Art: Bruce Nauman Retrospective’, New York Times, 30 October 1987). Indeed, the one of the traits in Bruce Nauman’s oeuvre is the power ideas over formal resolution.

Roy Lichtenstein’s Untitled (Sheets of Studies for Leda & the Swan) shows a fusion of the style of the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s, and the theme of Greek mythology. The drawing has a two-dimensional static quality reminiscent of 1930s art, in which a careful balance is observed in the relationship between verticals, diagonals, curves and straight edges, to achieve a feeling of dynamic movement as well as a frieze-like stillness. The theme of Leda and the Swan, based on the Greek myth of Leda who was seduced by Zeus in the form of a swan, gained popularity in the 16th century and was revisited in the 1960s by artists such as Cy Twombly and Hermann Nitsch. Lichtenstein’s drawing of studies shows his ability to understand the subject matter and the organization and division of space to create an energetic composition.
