A Life Lived Fully Ends Too Soon Longtime and highly respected Phillips Academy faculty member Craig Thorn IV died Monday, June 12, 2006, after a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. He was 47. Little more than a week earlier, at Andover’s commencement exercises, Head of School Barbara Landis Chase spoke of Thorn to the Class of 2006: “I have never known another human being with Craig’s capacity for work. He taught many of you to love literature, to write and edit. He barbequed with you at football games and in the front yard of Thompson House, the dorm where four of you have lived with Craig and his family. He is a talented and prolific writer and editor in his own right. Through all this, he has taught us that hard work, done well, done joyfully, lifts us out of ourselves. It takes us away from our own cares and burdens. It transports us to a new landscape, where fresh intellectual and human insights illuminate our lives with a stunning clarity. For teaching us all this, for being the person he is, we love this man.” Craig Thorn’s obituary can be found on Page 90.
