La Iniciativa Roots (Raíces) E l proyecto Vida Auténtica ya está arraigado y sigue creciendo. Cuando pase por el Mercado Orgánico los martes en el salón comunal de Tinamaste, usted podrá enterarse de lo que está sucediendo con la Iniciativa de Vida Roots (raíces); nuestros talleres bimestrales, el programa de voluntariado y con nuestra campaña de recaudación de fondos. Actualmente, es uno de los mejores mercados semanales en la zona de Costa Ballena, incluso en la temporada de lluvias observamos un crecimiento constante. Hay mucho que comprar, tanto productos

orgánicos como artesanales. Es un lugar ideal para ver y conocer gente, pero tenga cuidado, podría quedarse más de lo planeado. Esta encantadora feria es otro proyecto iniciado por Vida Auténtica y fue inaugurado hace dos años como un canal de venta para los productos de los graduados de la primera clase de agricultura orgánica en Las Tumbas. La Iniciativa Roots, es un curso de jardinería integral de 15 semanas, llevado a varios pueblos por Vida Auténtica. The Roots Initiative The Vida Auténtica project is already rooted and continually growing. When you stop by the Organic Market on Tuesdays at Tinamaste’s salon communal, you will find out what is going on with Vida’s Roots Initiative; our bimonthly workshops, the volunteer program, and our fundraising campaign. This charming Feria is another project started by Vida Auténtica as an outlet to commercialize the produce harvested by the graduates of the first organic agriculture class in Las Tumbas. Currently, it is one of the best weekly markets in the Costa Ballena area. Even during the rainy season, we noticed consistent growth. There are plenty of organic and crafted products to buy. It is a great place to see and meet people, but be careful; you might stay longer than

you expect. The Roots Initiative is a comprehensive 15-week gardening course taken to several towns by Vida Auténtica. A Costa Rican expert organic agronomist carries the torch and lights the way as the instructor for the Roots classes as well as our many other workshops. We have been in Las Tumbas, Tinamastes, Alfombra, and San Salvador where we built over sixty greenhouses for the graduating participants of those courses. Starting the first week of February, we will be bringing the Roots course to Dominicalito and Platanillo Space is limited in our organic agriculture classes. Come early on Tuesdays, and find out how to bring the organic into your life. n

eaders of Ballena Tales are an adventurous group. This group likes its adventure sports: water, low lands, mountain, or jungle. They are also adventurous in a culinary way as evidenced from the area’s wide range of fine restaurants. And this adventurous group consists of dedicated practitioners of a wide span of the arts, from the handmade to the meditative. Speaking of adventure, in the last issue of Ballena Tales the editor saw fit to publish a photo of a bearded old dude sitting on a Harley Davidson, and the questions came; here are some answers to a few of them. 1. Yes, there is a Harley Davidson authorized agency in San Jose (Escazú) that has been there since 1996. For riding purposes, the roads in Costa Rica are a

million times better than in days gone by. Sure, there are still some potholes and other challenging obstacles (horses, cows, humans driving cars, trucks, etc.) but take it easy, and you’ll have no problem riding your motorcycle. All of the major roads lead to San José, so it’s hard to get lost. The best is route 34, the Pacific Coast Road, the 200 kilometers of which has a little bit of all of Costa Rica; a taste of Costa Rica one might say, and on which is the home of Ballena Tales. 2. And yes, there is a Women’s Motorcycle Riding Club, called Viudas Negras and a phone call to Roshany at the Harley Dealer will get you started there. Whatever your adventure, have fun and remember, as always, safety first: wear helmets and reflective gear. n

Contando aves en Costa Ballena

¿P

or qué la observación de aves es tan popular? Yo creo que la respuesta está en la gran diversidad de aves no solamente en el número de especies -- son aproximadamente 9800 en todo el mundo -- si no también en la diversidad de hábitat. Se encuentran en lugares tan diferentes como en las capas polares y los bosques tropicales así como también en el centro de grandes ciudades. La diversidad en apariencia es igualmente extrema, algunos muy coloridos otros sin gracia y otros más tan bien camuflados que son casi invisibles. Algunos son melodiosos y otros ofensivos o mudos. Algunos vuelan muy alto, otros como aviones de acrobacia y algunos no vuelan. Y sus tamaños varían desde el más pequeño colibrí que es apenas un poquito más grande que una abeja y pesa no más que un par de sujetapapeles (1.95 g) hasta el

enorme Cóndor de los Andes con una extensión de alas que puede llegar hasta 3 metros y puede llegar a pesar más de 13 kg. Las aves en todos sus extremos son fascinantes y por esa razón la observación de aves se ha convertido en una actividad muy popular en todo el mundo, especialmente en Costa Ballena. Por más de un siglo, la sociedad de “American Audubon” esmeradamente ha reunido, organizado y difundido información sobre las aves. Una de las actividades más conocidas de la sociedad es “Christmas Bird Count” (CBC) la cual monitorea las especies de aves en muchos lugares de las Américas desde Alaska hasta Argentina. En Costa Rica existen seis áreas de conteo. En los últimos diez años nuestra área, la Fila Costeña ha participado en seis CBC’s y ha identificado más de 425 especies de aves entre la costa y la fila de Tinamastes. n

Counting Birds In Costa Ballena

hy is bird watching such a popular activity? I believe the answer lies in the great diversity of birds, not only in the number of species -- around 9800 worldwide -- but also in diversity of habitat, being found in places as different as the polar caps, tropical rainforests, and even the very center of large cities. Their diversity in appearance is equally extreme: some colorful, others drab, and some so well camouflaged as to be nearly invisible. Some are melodious, some obnoxious, and others mute. Some soar, others fly like stunt planes, and some are flightless. And, their sizes range from that of the tiniest humming bird, only slightly larger than a bumble bee and weighing no more than a couple of paper clips (1.95 gm,) to the enormous Andean Condor with a wing span upwards

of 3 meters and a weight of over 13 kg. Birds, in all their extremes, are fascinating, and, for that reason, bird watching has become a very popular activity all over the world, and especially in Costa Ballena. For over a century, the American Audubon Society has diligently gathered, organized, and disseminated information about birds. One of the best-known activities of the society is the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) which monitors bird species in many locations throughout the Americas, from Alaska to Argentina. In Costa Rica, there are six count areas. In the past ten years our area, the Fila Costeña, has participated in six CBCs and identified more than 425 species of birds between the coast and the Tinamastes ridge. n

ominical is the gateway to Costa Ballena. This very well known little town has a relaxed atmosphere, and it is a real surfer’s paradise. Dominical’s beaches have strong currents. Be cautious when bathing! Walking or driving along the Barú River when going to the mountains can be a true pleasure. Near the Hotel Villas Río Mar, you can find several natural pools filled with refreshing waters. If you want to take a dip, do it close to other people and keep an eye on your pet at all times. Un verano lleno de melodías de playa

l verano en Costa Ballena está colmado de festivales. Desde topes tradicionales y exposiciones hasta festivales de música multinacionales, los buenos tiempos continúan. Sin embargo, además de los festivales esperados, en Dominical continuamente hayuna gran variedad de eventos y actividades para disfrutar. Dominical siempre ha sido una ciudad vibrante conocida por su vida nocturna. Este verano todo gira alrededor de la música en vivo y vibras positivas de playa.

Hay una gran cantidad de músicos talentosos en el pueblo en estos momentos que estarán tocando regularmente durante el verano. El cantante e increíble guitarrista, Jamisun, tocará su música al atardecer en Tortilla Flats todos los miércoles. El dúo de guitarra y tambor de Drew LaPlante y sus amigos se estarán presentando los jueves. Todos los viernes por la noche las leyendas locales, Ben Jammin y los Howlers, reviven las baladas y clásicos de rock en Roca Verde. Mientras tanto, los Geckos de

Uvita, tocan una excelente mezcla de surf rock, mientras que Dave prepara una deliciosa parrillada al estilo Memphis en el Rum Bar. Si prefiere la música de DJs, Maracatú siempre tiene una mezcla ecléctica de DJs todos los miércoles durante Ladies Night. A Summer of Beach Tunes

ummer in Costa Ballena is packed with festivals. From traditional topes and expos, to multinational music festivals, the good times keep rolling. However, there are lots of events and activities to do in Dominical apart from the nearby festivals. Dominical has always been a vibrant town known for its nightlife. This summer it´s all about live music and positive beach vibes. There are a lot of talented musicians in town right now that will be playing consistently throughout the summer. Singer and guitar shredder, Jamisun, will be playing sunset jams every Wednesday at Tortilla Flats. Guitar and drum duo Drew LaPlante and friends will

be doing the same on Thursdays. Local legends, Ben Jammin’ and the Howlers, revive rock ballads and classics at Roca Verde every Friday evening. Meanwhile, Uvita locals, the Geckos, play a good blend of surf rock while Dave cooks up some Memphis style BBQ at the Rum Bar. If DJs are more your style, Maracatú always has an eclectic mix of DJs at Ladies’ Night on Wednesdays. All the bars and restaurants in Dominical will be hosting music and events. Stop and listen, or ask around. Come join the fun and enjoy our local music scene. n

Drew LaPlante

antante y compositor Drew LaPlante, se considera a sí mismo un trovador descalzo; él es originario de Ohio y aterrizó recientemente en Costa Ballena. Cuando cumplió 30 años decidió que era hora de seguir adelante. En el 2012, llegó por primera vez a Costa Rica y con su mochila al hombro pasó un tiempo en el Parque Nacional Corcovado. Ahí, rodeado de naturaleza pura decidió a dejar de lado todas las frustraciones e inseguridades pasadas, incluyendo la música que había producido antes de venir a Costa Rica. En su sitio web usted podrá descargar de forma gratuita tres álbumes de su música. Costa Ballena presentó una nueva y emocionante era para Drew “el creador de música”. Muy pronto se convirtió en un entusiasta del surf y cuando no está surfeando, está escribiendo nuevas canciones, trabajando en diseño gráfico o producción de video. Él y sus compañeros entretienen la audiencia con sus creaciones llenas de vida. Le preguntamos acerca de su estilo de música: “Actualmente estoy cambiando de folk rock a folktrónic, un género que incorpora ritmos de baile. Cuando la grabamos en nuestro estudio utilizamos la tecnología computarizada”, dijo. Él siente que con su música contagiosa es capaz de moldear el momento y elevar el campo de vibración de sus espectadores. While he was there, surrounded by pure nature, he made up his mind to let go of all his past frustrations and insecurities, including the music he had produced before moving to Costa Rica. On his web site, you will find free downloads of three of his albums. His move to Costa Ballena prompted a new and exciting era for Drew “the music maker.” In no time, he became a surf enthusiast, and when he is not surfing, he is writing new songs, working with graphic design, and video productions. Drew and his fellow musicians entertain the audiences with their lively creations. We asked him about his music style: “Currently, I am shifting from folk rock to folktronic, a genre incorporating dance rhythms. We use computer technology when we record music in our studio,” he said. He feels his infectious music allows him to mold the moment and uplift his listeners’ vibrational field. This summer you will have the opportunity to experience Drew’s music at Tortilla Flats, Jolly Roger, and several other venues. n Cabinas Pacific Edge en Dominicalito se encuentra una pequeña y exclusiva galería de obras de arte realizadas por los Borucas, un grupo de indígenas que viven en el Pacífico Zona Sur de Costa Rica. Están muy orgullosos de tener una comunidad auto-sostenible, en donde 80% de los ingresos proceden de sus artesanías. Son artistas de la fibra y talladores de máscaras. En los últimos años y con la ayuda de la comunidad, han adquirido nuevas ideas para sus productos. Los propietarios de Pacific Edge, Susie y George Atkinson, durante casi 20 años, han trabajado con los Borucas ayudando a promover sus artesanías. La galería no sólo promueve exclusivas máscaras talladas, también ofrece hermosos productos tejidos y teñidos a mano con substancias orgánicas, tales como bolsos de playa,

carteras, fundas para esteras de yoga, salvamanteles para la mesa y la cómoda así como manteles. Susie muestra sólo los mejores artículos hechos a mano, seleccionando las máscaras talladas y detalladamente pintadas a mano. Considerando que su objetivo es llevar la mayor cantidad de ingresos al pueblo de Boruca, ella prefiere vender más artículos a precios accesibles en lugar de pocos artículos a precios elevados. El viaje a Boruca es de aproximadamente 2 horas, sin embargo, usted puede comprar sus artesanías aquí mismo en la galería de regalos ubicada en Pacific Edge Cabins. ocated at Pacific Edge Cabins in Dominicalito is a unique small gallery of artworks made by the Borucans, an indigenous group living in the South Pacific of Costa Rica. They are very proud that they are self-sustainable, with 80% of their income coming from their handicrafts; they are fiber artists and mask carvers. In the last few years, with help from the community, they have gained new ideas for their products. Susie and George Atkinson, owners of Pacific Edge, have worked with the Borucans nearly 20 years, helping to promote their artwork. Not only does the gallery offer one of a kind carved masks, there are also beautiful organic hand-dyed woven products, such

as beach totes, purses, yoga mat covers, table/dresser scarves and placemats. Susie displays only the finest crafted items, selecting the most detailed of the handpainted carved masks. Because her aim is to bring as much income into the village of Boruca as possible she would rather sell more items at affordable prices, than sell fewer items at marked-up prices. The journey to Boruca is about two hours each way; however, you can purchase their crafts locally at the Gallery Gift Shop, which is located at Pacific Edge Cabins. The turn off is just south of the Playa Dominicalito bridge and north of the turn-off to La Parcela restaurant. Look for the brightly painted yellow rock. n

his peculiar mammal, a “cousin” of the weasels, is a diurnal predator; it is hard to pin down because we don’t see it often here. The tayra (Eira barbara) or tolomuco, as it is known in Costa Rica, is characterized by its stretched-out body and long thick tail. Its color varies from brown to black.

ste peculiar mamífero, “primo” de las comadrejas, es un depredador diurno, muy escurridizo al ser humano y por ende difícil de ver. Hablamos del tolomuco como popularmente se le conoce en Costa Rica; otro nombre que se le da es Tayra (Eira barbara). Se le caracteriza por su cuerpo estirado y una cola larga y espesa. Su color va de café oscuro a negro. Puede pesar entre 4 y 6 kilogramos y medir hasta unos 70 cm sin contar la cola que mide cerca de 45 cm. La cabeza es ancha y grande con relación al cuerpo y en comparación con otros mustélidos. Mustélidos son mamíferos carnívoros que habitan en bosques y zonas de vegetación abundante. Generalmente, se puede observar cazando solo o en grupos, especialmente sobre los árboles, donde son muy ágiles y se desenvuelven mucho mejor que sobre el suelo. Pueden cazar desde guatusas, conejos e inclusive algunos perezosos se han reportado como parte de su dieta, por otro lado, también se les ha visto alimentándose de los frutos del bosque. Duerme en las cavidades de los árboles o en madrigueras subterráneas de los cuales se apoderaron. Una vez al año las hembras paren dos a cuatro crías. Aún siendo escurridizos, Costa Ballena es un sitio donde se han reportado frecuentes avistamientos y las probabilidades son aún mayores cuando realizamos un paseo a pie o en bicicleta. ¡Suerte! Ojalá que logre ver a un Tolomuco. n

It can weigh between four and six kg and measures up to 70 cm without the tail, which is about 45 cm long. The head is wider and larger relative to its body and those of other mustelids. Mustelids are carnivorous mammals inhabiting forests and areas with abundant vegetation. Generally, the tayra can be seen hunting alone or in groups, especially on trees, where it is very agile and its skills are much better than on the ground. It can hunt anything: agoutis, rabbits, and even sloths, which have been reported as a part of its diet. It has also been seen feeding on berries. The tayra sleeps in tree cavities or in underground burrows which it steals from other animals. Once a year, females give birth to two to four pups. Even though Tayras are elusive, frequent sightings have been reported in Costa Ballena. The probability of seeing one is greater when walking or riding a bike. Good luck in seeing a Tolomuco! n

l fútbol de salón se creó en 1930 en Uruguay, cuando la selección de Uruguay había ganado tanto el Campeonato del Mundo como la medalla de oro en los Juegos Olímpicos. Debido a la falta de campos, los niños uruguayos comenzaron a jugar en campos de baloncesto. Así es como nació el Futsal. Cada partido dura 40 minutos, con dos periodos de veinte minutos cada uno, separados por diez minutos de descanso entre ambos. El fútbol de sala co-existe en dos entes rectores: la FIFA y la FIFUSA, reemplazada por la AMF (Asociación Mundial de Futsal). Aquí en el Rincón del Uvita, nos entrevistamos con Carlos José Arias Quiroz y Hexel Acuña, ambos entrenadores de futsal femenino (nivel 1) en la Asociación Deportiva de Costa Ballena. El futsal de Uvita reunió anteriores jugadoras de Uvita, Playa Hermosa y Bahía.

C o s ta B a l l e n a Están entrenando vigorosamente todos los lunes y viernes en el Salón Comunal de Bahía. Los sábados a las 6 pm suelen tener partidos amistosos en el Rincón de Uvita. Las muchachas lo toman muy en serio porque desean representar la zona Sur en los Campeonatos Nacionales entre abril y junio del 2015. Si quieres participar en el equipo por favor acércate al Rincón de Uvita, donde puedes hacer una prueba. Es un grupo muy emprendedor. Venden almuerzos típicos en hojas por pedido para recaudar fondos que usan en la compra de uniformes y para cubrir los gastos de transporte. El lema del grupo es “Nadie alcanza una meta en un sólo intento, ni la perfección en una sóla corrección, ni la altura en un sólo vuelo, pero si persiste podrá construir sus sueños día a día”. n

Indoor Soccer

n 1930, indoor soccer was born in Uruguay when Uruguay’s team won both the World Championships and the gold medal at the Olympics. Due to the lack of soccer fields, the Uruguayan children started to play at basketball fields. It is how “Futsal” was born. Each game lasts 40 minutes, with two periods of twenty minutes each, and there is a ten-minute break between the two periods. Futsal co-exists in two governing bodies: FIFA and FIFUSA, replaced by the AMF (World Futsal Association). Here at Rincón de Uvita we interviewed Carlos José Arias Quiroz and Hexel Acuña, both coaches for female futsal (level 1) in the Costa Ballena Sports Association. Futsal Uvita brought together former futsal players from Uvita, Playa Hermosa, and Bahía.

Every Monday and Friday, the team is enthusiastically training at Bahía Salón Communal. On Saturdays at 6 pm, they have friendly matches in the Rincon de Uvita. The girls take it seriously; they want to represent the Southern Zone in the National Championships from April to June 2015. If you want to become a member of this team, please go to Rincón de Uvita, where you can try out. It is a very innovative group. To raise funds for the purchase of their uniforms and to cover transportation costs, they sell typical food by request. The group’s motto is “Nobody reaches a goal in the first try, or perfection in one correction, nor height in a single flight, but if you persist you will build your dream every day.” n

“W

e just got hungry one day and decided to make donuts. It seems like we’re pretty good at it,” says Gring O’s manager, Joy. Now, after only three months of having their tiny shop, Joy and Ellie, the frosting chief, have a thriving donut “factory.” Every Saturday, Joy, Ellie, and their two friends, Nicole and José, get up at 5 am, prepare the dough, fry the donuts, and apply the glaze or the filling. By 8 am, the whole area around the Farmers Market in Uvita carries the smell of freshly baked goods. Besides the classic glazed donut, there are other flavors such as cinnamon and sugar, maple syrup, and chocolate with sprinkles; every week there is a donut special. Come early; once they are sold out, your next

chance will be Monday and Tuesday when the shop opens again at 3:30 pm. The three girls have been volunteering at the Uvita Christian Academy; they renovated their shop at Rincon de Uvita with the help of a few friends. So far, all the profits have been reinvested in kitchen accessories. Ellie, Joy, and Nicole love Uvita’s relaxed environment, and love meeting all the interesting folks visiting the donut shop. “Listening to people’s stories is the best part of this work. Costatika – Escuela de Idiomas Para estudiantes de español El uso de los pronombres reflexivos Entender los verbos con pronombres reflexivos: en español es importante ya que son muy usados. Saber cómo usarlos no es tan difícil como algunas personas piensan. Sólo debe encontrar una forma fácil y divertida de aprendérselos. Yo le recomiendo memorizarlos pero en forma de canción: me ~ te ~ se ~ nos ~ se. Repítalos varias veces y verá que se le pegan. Algunas claves que permiten saber cuándo usar un pronombre reflexivo son: 1) Verbos o acciones que indican actividades de rutina

tales como: levantarse, peinarse, lavarse, etc. 2) Cuando el sujeto principal de la oración recibe la acción. Vamos a comparar los siguientes ejemplos: a) Pedro se baña temprano para ir a trabajar.

En este ejemplo el sujeto principal de la oración, “Pedro”, recibe la acción. También, el verbo es una actividad diaria. b) Pedro baña su bebé temprano. En este caso Pedro está realizando la acción, sin embargo, él no la recibe, sino que más bien el bebé es el que la recibe. Esta es la razón por la cual el pronombre reflexivo no se usa, aunque es el mismo verbo. Espero que esta pequeña explicación le ayude a mejorar su español. Recuerde que si usted disfruta el proceso de aprendizaje de un nuevo idioma obtendrá mejores y más rápidos resultados. Así que, ¡disfrútelo! n

Costatika Language School For those learning Spanish How to use reflexive pronouns Understanding verbs with reflexive pronouns: in Spanish is important, mainly because they are used very often. Knowing how to use them is not as hard as some people might think. All you need to do is find an easy and fun way to learn them. I recommend memorizing the reflexive pronouns as a jingle: me ~ te ~ se ~ nos ~ se (myself, yourself, [herself, himself, and itself], ourselves, yourselves, and themselves). Repeat them several times and they will stick in your mind. Some clues for you to know when to use reflexive pronouns are: 1) verbs indicating daily activities such as: to get up, to comb one’s hair, to wash oneself, etc. 2) when the main subject of the sentence receives the action.

Let’s compare the following examples: a) Pedro se baña temprano para ir a trabajar. (Peter showers himself early in the morning to go to work). In this example, the main subject of the sentence, “Pedro,” receives the action. Additionally, the verb is a daily activity. In this example, the use of the reflexive pronoun is required. b) Pedro baña su bebé temprano. (Peter bathes his baby in the morning). In this case, Peter is performing the action; however, he does not receive it, but the baby. This is why the verb does not need the reflexive pronoun. Costa Ballena y la región del Pacifico Sur cuenta con una gran cantidad de lugares hermosos para practicar este deporte. Existen 2 tipos de disciplinas: SUP surf y SUP recreativo. Contamos con playas y ríos excelentes para practicar ambas disciplinas. Entre los más conocidos están las playas a lo largo de Costa Ballena; los ríos Terraba y Sierpe, Bahía de Drake y el Golfo Dulce-Golfito.

¡Caminar sobre el agua! Ésta es la mejor manera de explicar la sensación que se experimenta al llevar a cabo este deporte. En los dos últimos años Bahía Ballena ha sido sede del circuito Nacional de SUP, uno de los eventos más populares debido a que nuestra playa no sólo cuenta con una gran belleza sino también con un grado de dificultad mayor a las demás fechas de competencia. There are two types of disciplines: SUP surfing and recreational SUP. We have excellent beaches and rivers where both disciplines can be practiced. Among the best known are the beaches along Costa Ballena; the Terraba and Sierpe Rivers; and Drake Bay and the Golfo DulceGolfito. Walk on water! This is the best way to explain the feeling you experience when you practice this sport. For the past two years, Bahía Ballena has hosted the National SUP circuit; it has been one of the most popular events, not only because our beach is gorgeous, but it also has a higher degree of difficulty than other locations. Our community has a SUP champion, Diego Chévez; he is the National Champion in category SUP 4.5 kilometers, and a great advocate of the sport in our area. n recent years, national surfing has been booming, especially because in 2014 our local surfers have placed our country at a high-level in the international ranking. Surfers from all over Costa Rica, and in particular, Noe Mar and Leilani McGonagle, brother and sister from Pavones, represented Costa Rica in several competitions worldwide with the support of their father. In December 2014, Leilani won a copper medal becoming number four in the female open category of the ISA (International Surfing Association) China cup in Hainan. To continue the family success, her brother Noah Mar was able to get into the quarterfinal at the World Junior ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals). Their hometown Pavones, located in the beautiful South Pacific, has exquisite and highly graded waves. The Chamber of Tourism Osa (CATUOSA) is promoting surfing and other related activities. Second Annual Costa Ballena Craft Beer Tasting the Festival is focused on two communities. First is the Costa Rican craft beer community: “There will be 17 brewers from all over the country as well as local brewers represented. The entire craft beer community is working and growing together. Second is the Costa Ballena community which benefits by hosting the tasting as well as enjoying the immense variety of beers available. Because every beer is different from all others, there is something new to learn about the style, flavor, and body with each tasting. Playa Ventanas abrió sus ventanas de nuevo

l acceso público a una de las más bellas playas de la costa del Pacífico Sur, se interrumpió hace dos años, cuando un puente fue arrastrado por las fuertes lluvias y dejó un hundimiento infranqueable en el camino. La única manera de llegar era atravesando una propiedad privada cuyos dueños cobraban una tarifa por el estacionamiento. Cuando la Municipalidad de Osa la clausuró el pasado mes de noviembre por no cumplir con los requisitos, ADI Ojochal (la Asociación de Desarrollo) decidió actuar. El proyecto para nivelar el lecho del río y recuperar el antiguo sen-

dero indígena que lleva a Ventanas, se discutió en la nueva junta directiva de ADI y fue propuesto a la Municipalidad. Posteriormente todo comenzó a suceder a un ritmo increíble. A los pocos días, la maquinaria pesada y los materiales de construcción donados por esta entidad llegaron. Numerosos voluntarios comenzaron a trabajar cortando el chaparral y la comunidad de Ojochal recaudó alrededor de $ 5,000 para financiar obras adicionales tales como la preparación de un estacionamiento en la playa. ADI logró obtener una concesión provisional y renovable de la Mu-

nicipalidad para operar la playa. Gracias a un acuerdo con la Asada de Ojochal (Acueducto), Playa Ventanas contará con agua, servicios sanitarios y duchas. El 20 de diciembre fue un placer comprobar que el acceso a la hermosa playa es adecuado para cualquier tipo de vehículo ahora que nuevamente está abierta al público. ADI Ojochal y el Comité de Playas están muy agradecidos con la comunidad de Ojochal, la Municipalidad de Osa, el MINAE y la policía por su valiosa colaboración en el esfuerzo para devolver este pedazo de paraíso a quienes realmente pertenece. n

Playa Ventanas opened its windows again

he public access to one of the most beautiful beaches along the South Pacific coast was interrupted two years ago, when a bridge was washed away by the heavy rain, leaving a deep sinkhole in the road. The only way in was through a private property whose owners were charging parking fees. When the Municipality of Osa closed it last November because of the lack of compliance with the law, ADI Ojochal (Development Association), decided to take action. The project of flattening the riverbed and recovering the old indigenous trail leading to Ventanas was discussed at the new ADI board of directors and was proposed to the Municipality. Shortly after, everything started happening very fast. A few days later, the heavy machinery and construction materials donated by this entity,

arrived. Many volunteers started working cutting the shrubbery; the Ojochal community raised about $5,000 to pay for additional work, such as a parking area by the beach. ADI obtained a provisional and renewable concession from the Municipality to operate the beach. Thanks to an agreement with the Asada Ojochal (Aqueduct) Playa Ventanas will have water, sanitary services, and showers. On December 20th, we were pleased to verify the easy access to our beautiful Ventanas beach in any type of vehicle now that it is open to the public again. ADI Ojochal and the Beach Committee are very grateful to the Ojochal community, the Osa Municipality, MINAE, and the police for their valuable collaboration in the effort to return this slice of paradise to those to whom it really belongs. n

ut why Ojoche? The Ojoche (Brosimum alicastrum) is a tree that gave its name to the village of Ojochal, a place where this species was abundant; however, today there are very few of them left. The first settlers came to the village 80 years ago. Since they found many Ojoche trees around, they decided to give the village the name of Ojochal. Gradually, more people settled in the area and required more space for agriculture and livestock. At that point, the era of deforestation of the ojoche tree began; and as a result, the symbol of the town disappeared. Today, the Ojoche Committee aims to reintroduce the tree in the landscape of Ojochal to honor its history. The “Viva el ojoche - el ojoche vive” project is a good example of solidarity and intercultural participation; the purpose is to connect the visitors and the inhabitants through this worthy project. The committee, together with the school kids and volunteers, produced a new brochure and hiking map. The trail will lead you through the center of the village and up to the trees planted at the waterfall. The road through the village of Ojochal is about 9.5 kilometers long, and takes at least 2.5 hours. n

on una nutrida asistencia, se llevó a cabo la última reunión del año de la Junta Directiva de la Cámara de Turismo de Osa (CATUOSA) en el nuevo Hostal del Mar en Golfito. También estuvo presente la Cámara de Turismo de Golfito representada por el Sr. Elberth Barrantes, Director Ejecutivo. El Sr. Luis Centeno, Presidente de CATUOSA se refirió al esquema de comisiones con que están trabajando diligentemente y se mostró satisfecho de los resultados presentados. Representantes de diferentes comisiones mostraron su informe, el directivo Andrés Vargas expuso sobre las actividades de marketing que están realizando a fin de promover el destino y la labor que lleva a cabo CATUOSA a favor del empresariado turístico del Pacifico Sur de Costa Rica. Especial atención tuvo el tema de los planes reguladores en Osa y Golfito, se comentó la promulgación de la nueva ley que impone plazo a los municipios para resolver este asunto. CATUOSA propone crear una comisión bi-cantonal Osa-Golfito, con la presencia de los respectivos Alcaldes, se acordó realizar reunión específica en Puerto Jiménez Península de Osa. La bienvenida estuvo a cargo de la Sra. Catalina Torres Portela, gerente de Hostal del Mar, quienes con esta actividad también dieron marco a la inauguración del hotel. En esta ocasión se disfrutó una alegre velada, cortesía del hotel. La amabilidad y profesionalismo del personal de Hostal del Mar fueron ingrediente fundamental para que la celebración fuera un éxito. n

he last board meeting of the Chamber of Tourism of Osa (CATUOSA) took place in the new Hostal del Mar in Golfito. Among the numerous participants, was Golfito’s Chamber of Tourism, represented by Elberth Barrantes, the Executive Director. Mr. Luis Centeno, CATUOSA’s President, talked about the framework under which the committees are diligently working and showing satisfactory results. Delegates of several committees introduced their state of affairs. Appointee Andrés Vargas talked about the marketing activities taking place to promote the destination, and the work performed by CATUOSA in favor of the tourism industry of Costa Rica’s Southern Pacific.

The regulatory plans in Osa and Golfito received special attention, specifically the enactment of the new law imposing deadlines to the municipalities to resolve this matter. CATUOSA proposes to create a bi-cantonal commission Osa-Golfito, with the participation of the respective Mayors. They agreed on meeting in Puerto Jimenez - Osa Peninsula. Ms. Catalina Torres Portela, manager of Hostal del Mar, welcomed the participants, celebrating at the same time the grand opening of the hotel with a cheerful evening dinnerand music; all of it courtesy of the hotel. The friendliness and professionalism of the Hostal del Mar management and staff were key ingredients for the success of this celebration. n

a lancha nos estaba esperando en el atracadero de Golfito, y el capitán Alan nos llevó a una gran bahía rodeada de altas palmeras a través de las serenas aguas del Golfo Dulce. El personal extendió frente a nosotros un pequeño puente portátil lo que consideramos la “alfombra roja”, que nos permitió bajar del barco sin mojarnos los pies. Todo el personal encabezado por el gerente Luis Pardo, estuvo presente para darnos la bienvenida. El edificio principal y las cabañas están bellamente construidos con madera nativa. Nuestra habitación era espaciosa, elegantemente

decorada, fresca y muy cómoda. Tanto la vista del golfo asi como el gran jardín cubierto de vegetación exuberante son algo fabuloso. La cena a la luz de las velas en el Restaurante Gavilán fue muy romántica. Los platillos siempre se preparan con productos frescos de la granja del hotel, aspecto que permitió al Chef Víctor deleitarnos con sus exquisitas recetas costarricenses acompañadas de excelente vino. Por la mañana, después de tomar una exquisita taza de café, Mario fue nuestro guía y nos llevó por los alrededores del hotel a través del valle de los saínos. Observamos

No queríamos partir, sin embargo, nuestro vuelo salía esta misma mañana. Hay tanto que ver y experimentar, recomiendo alojarse por lo menos dos noches. Quisiera regresar y remar el golfo en stand up paddle. Nos sentimos como en casa con amigos, el servicio fue excelente y recibimos muchas sonrisas de amabilidad totalmente autenticas. he boat was waiting for us at Golfito’s dock where we boarded Captain Alan’s boat to cross the serene waters of Golfo Dulce to a large bay surrounded by tall palm trees. The staff spread a small portable bridge in front of us, what we considered the "red carpet," and that allowed us to get off the boat without getting our feet wet. The whole staff led by manager Luis Pardo was there welcoming us. The main lodge and the bungalows are beautifully built from native wood. Our room was spacious, tastefully decorated, fresh, and very comfortable. Both the view of the Gulf and the large gardens covered with dazzling vegetation, are exquisite. The candlelight dinner in the Gavilán Restaurant was very romantic. The dishes are always prepared with fresh produce from the hotel's farm; this feature allowed Chef Víctor to delight us with his superb Costa Rican recipes and fine wine. In the morning, after having a delicious cup of coffee, guide Mario gave us a tour around the hotel and through the peccaries´ valley. We spotted monkeys, tayras, one raccoon, and countless birds. When we returned, a delicious breakfast with fresh juices was waiting for us. We did not want to leave; however, our flight was scheduled for that morning. There is so much to see and experience, I recommend you stay for at least two nights. I want to return, and stand up paddle the Golfo. We felt at home with friends; the service was excellent, and we received many authentic friendly smiles. Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas

l Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas tiene una extensión de 143 km2, está situado en la provincia de Puntarenas en el Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica, cerca de la localidad de La Gamba y forma parte del Área de Conservación Osa. Originalmente fue parte del Parque Nacional Corcovado y en 1999 fue nombrado Piedras Blancas. Actualmente es un parque nacional independiente. El Corredor Biológico de Osa (CBO) forma parte de la Reserva Forestal Golfo Dulce y es un pasaje entre el Parque Nacional Corcovado y Piedras Blancas. En 1991 el músico vienés Michael Schnitzler fundó la organización “Bosque de los Austriacos”. La organización compró largas extensiones de la selva tropical y las playas adyacentes que se vieron gravemente amenazada por la tala hasta mediados de los años 90. Su objetivo es asegurar la continuidad de los procesos biológicos preservando la biodiversidad me-

diante reforestación de todas las áreas así como la contratación de guardabosques. El pueblo de La Gamba participa en esta gran iniciativa ambiental y cuenta con buenos albergues así como el conocido “Esquinas Rainforest Lodge”. La cordillera de los ríos Esquinas y Piedras Blancas, está cubierta por un denso bosque constantemente verde que es el hogar de una increíble diversidad de raros árboles tropicales así como aves, mamíferos y reptiles. La caza clandestina solía ser un gran problema que ahora está controlado por los guardabosques. Adicionalmente, el Gobierno de Costa Rica, la empresa hidroeléctrica Tenaska, la asociación Conservación de la Naturaleza, así como las Fundaciones Gordon y Betty Moore han comprado tierras en Piedras Blancas, lo cual incrementa con ello el total del área protegida hasta un 80%. n

iedras Blancas National Park has a surface of 143 km2; it is located in Puntarenas Province within southern Costa Rica, close to a little town called La Gamba, and it belongs to the Osa Conservation Area. Originallya section of the Corcovado National Park, it was named Piedras Blancas in 1999 when it became an independent national park. In 1991 the Viennese musician Michael Schnitzler founded the “Rainforest of the Austrians.” This organization bought large pieces of the rainforest and the bordering beaches which were being severely endangered by the clear cutting taking place up to the mid-90s. The organization’s goal is to ensure the continuity of the biological processes while preserving biodiversity by reforesting all the areas as well

as hiring park rangers. La Gamba village is part of this great environmental initiative, and it has good hostels, as well as the well-known Esquinas Rainforest Lodge. The area encompassing the Esquinas and Piedras Blancas rivers and surrounding mountains is covered with thick evergreen forest, habitat to an amazing variety of birds, mammals, and reptiles. oaching was a big problem that is now controlled by the park rangers.
