Farming in the Home final year thesis spg2010

the ifarmfinal year thesis My final year thesis at Howard University. It proposed a new kind of architecture codenamed “iFarm. It aims to explore a new typology which hopes to aid placeless food by combining modern living and farming activities; allowing the average city dweller to enjoy some of the benefits of a farm without actually owning one; empowering today’s new sustainable dweller with an alternative to his or her local foods. The iFarm investigates geometries which transform and juxtapose dependent activities from within, in an effort to discover efficient relationships between these new activity groups: living and farming. This combination was tested in Fairfax, Virginia. The advent of agriculture has ushered in an unprecedented increase in the human population and their domesticated animals. Traditional farming catalyzed our transformation from primitive hunter-gatherers to sophisticated urban dwellers in just 10,000 years. Today over 800 million hectares are committed to soil-based agriculture, or about 38% of the total landmass of the earth. Intensified agriculture feeds many, but it has rearranged our landscape at the expense of multiple natural ecosystems.

A Watersports Facility 5th yr fall09

5th year design studios are required to design a medium sized watersports facility located on the south-west waterfront in Washington, DC. This was fundamentally an exercise in tectonic relationships and an introduction to full-iterative design techniques.

This design attacks the cancer which is currently eating away at its social core leaving a disseminated community. It longs to become an institution with a multi-faceted goal; the education of the youths of Parramore and the unification of the general community. Through the use of multi-use facilities including the cafeteria, auditorium, courtyard, gym, and playfield, the school will become a place where the residents can come together, and feel a sense of pride in themselves and each other. The building is then transformed using an axis found southeast of the site. The first African American school, The Orlando Black School, was located in an old frame building at the corner of Garland Avenue and Church Street. Due to increased enrollment the Orlando Black School was moved to the corner of Jefferson Street and Chatham Avenue and renamed Johnson Academy in 1904. These two sites create an axis which shoots straight through the proposed New Urban school. This existing element along with the force of this new found axis are used to transform the structure in such a way, that its courtyard becomes the magnet to the symbolic steel of the school and community. The courtyard space becomes a location that is symbolic of the higher possibilities that will be the product of community and student fusion. courtyard reaches OrlandoThe Black School (orginal) An interior lighting shelf allows light from the hallway out to Parramore with arms of education and purposefullness. to penetrate deep into classrooms on the south.
