Mini Whiteboards About the strategy

Top tips

Using mini whiteboards can aid teaching and learning for many reasons. Here are some of the many benefits:

• Store the mini whiteboards, pens and rubbers in packs of two to avoid hassle when handing them out

• Whole class engagement - less confident students are a lot more likely to participate

• Remember that Sixth Formers benefit in the same way lower school students do

• Accountability - students have to display their work and cannot opt out of activities

• Be explicit and train students on how to use them e.g. When not using them, insist that lids are put on the pens

• Quick and regular formative assessment

• Be consistent with your expectations - the more you use them, the less likely students are to mistreat them

• Sharing ideas - they facilitate group work and then sharing ideas with other groups • Removing stress and pressure - students know they will erase their answers • Retrieval Practice - you can quickly analyse where any gaps in knowledge are

• Try them out over a series of lessons so you can get used to them and iron out any issues

Speak to an expert If you would like to know more about using mini whiteboards and/or see them in action, contact Meg Sherman

• Better engagement - students like using them

“The main advantages of using mini whiteboards is that I can easily see that all students are participating and thinking about the task in hand.” - Mrs Sherman, Head of Spanish
