P
helps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) isn’t just a regional healthcare system. It is a source of community pride and one of our region’s largest employers, serving patients nearly 283,000 times a year at the hospital and its outpatient clinics. Ask anyone within a 60-mile radius, and you’ll likely find they were born here, had a loved one cared for here or have benefited in some way from our many outreach services. Take a closer look, and you’ll see our medical center is a direct reflection of the values we all hold dear. From our soon-to-becompleted Delbert Day Cancer Institute, to our program that pairs “doctor-less” patients with primary care physicians, to the special care we give families coping with loss, the priorities of PCRMC reflect the priorities of our region. We are people who care about each other. We are people who care for each other. We are people who stretch out a helping hand to those who need one. And we do it 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. MESSAGE from the President
A
s we look back at 2015, we can be proud of the many
accomplishments the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (Hospital Foundation) has made to provide philanthropic support to Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC). It was another year for all of us associated with the Hospital Foundation to be able to work together toward the goal of improving the health of those who live in PCRMC’s seven-county service region. We started the year with the Delbert Day Cancer Institute Campaign Celebration to honor donors who shared our vision of having a local cancer center that was second to none. It was a great event honoring those who helped us make the $7 million goal. This set a new record for the Hospital Foundation and made the April 2015 groundbreaking a total success. The June Golf Tournament also raised nearly $110,000 which set a new record for the Hospital Foundation. Thanks to all the sponsors and donors out there who made this a success, and congratulations to the hard effort of lots of folks on the hospital side for making it such a great event. A special thank you to all our wonderful hospital staff and employees who contributed more than $105,000 of their hard-earned income to the various Hospital Foundation funds that enrich the lives of folks desperately in need of those funds. Our third party fundraisers, including the Cancer Gala, Heart-2-Heart Luncheon, Cupcakes for Cancer and others contributed more than $200,000 in their efforts to the Foundation. Tremendous thanks to these groups for their tireless efforts in raising funds for our communities. Amidst the celebrations and the work over the last year, the board of directors has invested time in strengthening our governance and building our board. We welcomed new board members that share our passion. We have re-structured board committees and added additional board positions that are held by PCRMC key leadership staff members. This annual report is part of the commitment that our board has made to make certain that we share the good work of the Hospital Foundation while meeting our obligation for accountability to our friends and donors. We thank you all for your support and celebrate with you the work that we have done over the past year, and we enthusiastically look forward to a future of working together. He’s all in. INTRODUCING OUR NEW CEO, EDWARD CLAYTON We’d like to introduce you to Phelps County Regional Medical Center’s (PCRMC) new chief executive officer, Edward Clayton. While Clayton may be new to this role, he is no stranger to PCRMC. He and his wife, Sharon, both longtime employees of PCRMC, delivered their three children here and enjoy being part of such a diverse and progressive community. Clayton has been part of our family since 2001, when he joined our Accounting Department as controller. He has been rising through our ranks ever since. In 2006, Clayton was promoted to administrative director of finance, and then, four years later, to chief financial officer. Just last year, he was appointed chief operating officer. He assumed his new role as CEO on January 1, 2016. Prior to joining PCRMC, Clayton served as a consultant at Olive LLP, an Indiana consulting and accounting services firm whose clientele include hospitals, homecare agencies, nursing facilities and other healthcare specialties. He received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and an MBA from Webster University in Webster Groves, Missouri. He is registered with the state of Illinois as a certified public accountant. Clayton is an active member of the Healthcare Finance Management Association and a board member of the Rolla Regional Economic Commission, Your Community Health Center and the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (ex-officio). He serves on a number of committees associated with the Missouri Hospital Association.

Record day of golf ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES NEARLY $110,000 By nature, golfers tend to be a little competitive – and extraordinarily generous. That may explain why, for the 17th year in a row, the community set a new fundraising record at the Hospital Foundation’s annual golf tournament, bringing in nearly $110,000. Held at Rolla’s Oak Meadow Country Club on June 1, 2015, the annual golf tournament attracted 51 teams – that’s more than 200 golfers – also a record number. McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., and G2N, Inc., both from St. Louis, were title sponsors for the 2015 event. Also stepping up as major sponsors were specialty glass manufacturer Mo-Sci Corp. from Rolla, as well as several companies from the design and construction industry, including Esterly, Schneider & Associates, Inc. from Springfield and Guarantee Electrical Co. and Murphy Company, both from St. Louis. In all, 65 local and out-of-town companies provided donations for the event. After the golfers came in from the links, they enjoyed a dinner and awards ceremony where major sponsors were recognized and participants had a chance to win great prizes. The 18-hole tournament is one of the primary fundraisers the Hospital Foundation hosts each year. The money raised in 2015 was designated to support PCRMC’s new Delbert Day Cancer Institute.

PCRMC Employee Generosity RECORD NUMBER CONTRIBUTE TO 2015 EMPLOYEE GIVING CAMPAIGN Plenty of hospitals have generous employees who say they care deeply about their community and the patients they serve. The employees of Phelps County Regional Medical Center go a step further and support our medical center financially as well. In October 2015, we asked our employees to contribute to our annual Employee Giving Campaign. Nearly 330 PCRMC employees – that’s 20% of our work force -reached down deep to donate more than $105,000 through either one-time pledges or payroll deductions. That is record participation. Employees have the opportunity to designate how their contributions are used. This year most earmarked their donations for the Delbert Day Cancer Institute and the Greatest Needs Fund, with the remainder distributed among the Hospital Foundation’s other funds. “We are so grateful for the great work our employees do every day,” says Lorrie Hartley, the Hospital Foundation’s executive director. “Their generous support of this campaign is just further proof of the compassion and care they exhibit every day.”

Guardian Angels SAYING THANKS TO THOSE WHO GO THE EXTRA MILE A guardian angel is a protector -- a person who looks after or is concerned with the welfare of another. PCRMC is brimming with them. They include doctors, nurses and other caregivers who go out of their way to make our patients feel special, safe and cared for during their stay. They are real-life Guardian Angels. In 2010, we created the Guardian Angel program as a way for grateful patients to recognize and thank their providers for the extraordinary care they received, while making a contribution to our Hospital Foundation. Today it is one of the most successful programs of its kind in the country. How successful is it? In 2015, we recognized a total of 195 Guardian Angels. That included 144 individuals and groups. (Some of our Guardian Angels were recognized more than once during the year.) Our Guardian Angel Fund received 218 gifts, totaling $43,884. We wish there were space to recognize all of our Guardian Angels. But instead, we’ll share just a handful of the comments we received throughout the year from grateful patients and their families.

The Daisy Award EXCEPTIONAL NURSING CARE IS CELEBRATED We believe all PCRMC nurses are extraordinary, working long hours with few breaks to provide the compassionate care our patients need and deserve. But some nurses go a step further and are remembered by patients and staff alike for the exceptional – often heroic – care they deliver. Breaking new ground CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON DELBERT DAY CANCER INSTITUTE It was a day that was many years in the making. But on a bright spring afternoon in April 2015, well over 200 friends, donors and community members of PCRMC assembled on our grounds to witness the ground-breaking for the Delbert Day Cancer Institute (DDCI). Attendees included hospital administrators and board members, Hospital Foundation staff and board members, county officials, Rolla City Council and Chamber of Commerce members, Missouri University of Science and Technology administrators, community members and donors. The cancer institute is named in honor of famed cancer researcher, Dr. Delbert Day, who developed and patented Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT). SIRT increases tumor targeting, reduces side effects and treats tumors inaccessible by surgery. He coinvented special purpose glass microspheres, TheraSphere™, which is now being used at over 100 sites to treat patients with inoperable liver cancer. Dr. Delbert Day
Dr. Day’s son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Kim Day, provided the seed gift to honor the achievements of Dr. Day. Their generous gift, along with 1,169 additional donors, helped raise the initial $7 million toward the creation of the DDCI. Scheduled to open in January 2017, the DDCI will bring the best cancer services together under one roof in our own back yard, according to Edward Clayton, CEO of PCRMC. “We are excited about the opportunities the Delbert Day Cancer Institute brings to patients in our community. It provides a platform for our world-class physicians and clinicians to deliver cancer treatments in a way that is different than others. In the DDCI, the patient’s experience was the number one consideration in every step of the design.” Housed on the main Rolla campus, the DDCI is designed to provide the best possible patient experiences, while easing the travel burden that many patients face. It will feature state-of-the-art treatment services, patient-centered care, access to clinical trials and navigation, education and support for our patients.

But when our Hospital Foundation made it known that we needed that amount to make the Delbert Day Cancer Institute a reality, friends and neighbors – old and new – stepped up like they’ve never stepped up before. And Good Golly Miss Molly, they not only met, but EXCEEDED our ambitious goal. There is no way we could ever fully express our appreciation and thanks for this incredible show of support. So we did the next best thing: we threw an old-fashioned 1950s sock hop in January 2015 to celebrate the many people who made it all possible. Donors – many of whom dressed the part – embraced the throwback spirit and rocked around the clock that cold January evening. Elvis may have even entered the building. But amid all the fun, no one forgot the REAL cause for celebration – being part of a community that pulled together so that the cancer patients among us might have a place close-to-home where they can receive top-notch treatment.

In 2015, our Hospital Foundation received a record $204,391 raised by 11 events and fundraisers involving everything from cupcakes and bagels, to quilt raffles and butterflies. Our deep thanks go out to each and every person involved in these “third-party” events. Without you, these generous donations would not be possible. Beyond the dollars they raise, there is another reason why these events are meaningful to us. We know how much hard work you put into making them successful. For all the effort made on our behalf, we send a heartfelt THANK YOU.

Cancer Gala surpasses $1 million milestone after 30 years The 30th Annual Cancer Gala held on February 21, 2015 will be remembered for two things: 1) the frigid temperatures attendees braved just to make it to the Missouri University of Science & Technology’s Havener Center that evening, and 2) bringing in proceeds of more than $150,000 for the first time ever. The Hospital Foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year, the 2015 Cancer Gala began with a challenge from Gala Committee Member Lonna Sowers, who noted that the annual event had raised a total of $997,000 over its 30-year history, including the $136,000 raised through ticket sales and sponsorships for the 2015 event. Speaking to the sell-out crowd of more than 500, she noted that their enthusiastic participation in the silent auction, 50/50 raffles and Hurricane drinking glass sales that evening would send the 30-year total over the $1 million mark. And participate they did! When the evening was over, the 30-year total had risen to $1,044,000. Proceeds went primarily toward the Delbert Day Cancer Institute, which is currently under construction on the PCRMC campus. Also benefiting was the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund, which helps cancer patients pay for everyday essentials needed while they are receiving cancer treatment. On behalf of the many people in our community who will ultimately benefit from these funds, we humbly thank the Cancer Gala Committee for their extraordinary efforts on our behalf.

Cupcakes for Cancer CUPCAKE QUEEN BAKES AGAIN! Most 14-year-old girls are focused on hanging out at the pool and watching Netflix during their summer break from school. But not Brenna Heavin. Brenna is focused on baking cupcakes. Lots and LOTS of cupcakes. At age 14, the Rolla eighth-grader is the mastermind behind Cupcakes for Cancer, an annual fundraiser she started back in 2011 to support our Hospital Foundation’s Joy of Caring Cancer Fund. The fund, which helps with expenses for local cancer patients in need, was originally started by Brenna’s aunt, Renee Joy Heavin, an Edgar Springs resident who battled breast cancer in the 1990s. Since 2011, Brenna has devoted each July to her cupcake campaign. Customers place their orders in the weeks preceding delivery, choosing from chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, peanut butter, lemon and red velvet flavors. Each is sold for $1. And then Brenna takes to the kitchen and starts baking. In 2015, it took her an entire week. And when she was finished, she had baked nearly 2,500 cupcakes and raised more then $2,600 – a new record. She is a shining example of how to do what you love – and help others in the process.
Panera Pink Ribbon Bagels EVERYONE IS SEEING PINK – BAGELS, THAT IS October is the month when the rest of the world wears pink ribbons to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness. But here at PCRMC, we go the extra mile. We, along with others in our community, celebrate by enjoying pink bagels. Sponsored each year by Panera Bread, the annual Pink Ribbon Bagel sale gives Panera customers the chance to purchase a “pink” cranberry bagel. Panera donates a portion of the proceeds to our Breast Center Mammography Fund. In 2015, Pink Ribbon Bagel sales resulted in a $335 donation, which was used to support mammography and related services for low-income residents.

Honoring our loved ones BUTTERFLY RELEASE CELEBRATES THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO RECEIVED HOSPICE CARE How does one become a butterfly? You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar. It was in this spirit that some 40 people gathered at Huffman’s Flowers of the Field Gardening Center in St. James on May 21, 2015. All had lost loved ones who had once received hospice care. They had gathered there for Phelps Regional Homecare and Hospice’s first-ever Hospice Butterfly Release Celebration. Phelps Regional Homecare and Hospice serves patients who face life-limiting illnesses, helping to ensure they are cared for and comforted during this difficult time. Following food and fellowship, the group gathered in the field to release 60 butterflies that they had purchased in honor of their loved ones. Proceeds from the event, which raised nearly $7,000, went to our Hospital Foundation’s Hospice Fund. In 2015, the Hospice Fund provided low-income hospice patients with food vouchers, gas cards, utility and phone payments and other cost-of-living expenses, according to Hospice Director Cindy Van Woeart. In all, more than 70 patients benefited from this fund in 2015, for which their families will be eternally grateful.

Heart-2-Heart Luncheon HEART-2-HEART FUND GETS A BOOST FROM ANNUAL LUNCHEON When a record is broken at our Hospital Foundation, it’s guaranteed to be good news. It means we can provide more services and help more members of our community. That is certainly true of the Heart-2-Heart Luncheon hosted by the Heart-2-Heart Committee last December. Thanks to the record $34,434 raised, more people will benefit from the free heart health services our Heart-2-Heart Fund provides. That includes everything from health and wellness screenings to diabetic educational materials and cardiac rehab services at PCRMC.

The 2015 Luncheon featured a keynote speech by neurologist Dr. Mignon Makos. Lunch-goers also enjoyed music by local musicians as they bid on silent auction items and took chances on raffles. Many took home great prizes. But we think the big winner in this wonderful annual event is the PCRMC community!
Nurses Week ANNUAL WEEK-LONG CELEBRATION RAISES $2,350 During the second week of May each year, we at PCRMC do something that we ought to be doing 365 days a year: say THANKS to our wonderful nurses. During National Nurses Week each May, our nurses’ hard work and caring spirit is in the spotlight. Along with honoring them for all they do, PCRMC also encourages employees and community members to participate in a raffle to benefit our Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund, which recognizes and promotes nursing culture at PCRMC. IN THE SPOTLIGHT Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund In 2015, our nurses’ mission became a little clearer – literally. That’s because we revisited and streamlined PCRMC’s nursing mission statement. It is now, simply: To provide world-class, compassionate, patient-centered nursing care. Our Hospital Foundation’s Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund exists to support this mission and PCRMC’s efforts to recruit and retain top talent. We do so by providing our nurses the tools they need to give exceptional care and publicly recognizing their successes in delivering it. But it isn’t just our nurses who need to understand our mission. It’s important to educate PCRMC patients on the kind of care they should expect at our hospital. That’s why in 2015 we used money from the Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund to create the new placards now posted in every unit. These posters include not only our updated nursing mission statement, but also a photo of that unit’s nursing director, along with their own note about patient satisfaction. These public notices of our nursing mission are good reminders for our staff as well, and help create a more personal connection between our patients and staff.

Have van, will travel PATIENT TRANSPORTATION FUND IS A LIFESAVER FOR SOME Being diagnosed with cancer or undergoing major surgery is challenging enough. But recovery is even more difficult – if not impossible – if a patient doesn’t have a way to get to and from their medical appointments and treatments. That is why our Hospital Foundation’s Patient Transportation Fund was created. The need for it is great. PCRMC’s transport vans complete thousands of patient trips per year, logging tens of thousands of miles in the process. “Our drivers pick up and drop off patients in a 30-mile radius of Rolla,” explains Cindy Butler, fund administrator. “So these vans put on a lot of miles in a year.” Two of the vans in the current fleet, in fact, have more than 150,000 miles on them and are due for replacement. “This service means so much to our patients,” says Butler. “If you don’t have a vehicle, or gas money, or a family member who can drive you, you are going to have a hard time making an appointment. Our drivers become friends with our patients, building relationships over years. They take a lot of pride in making sure they get our patients where they need to be safely and on time.” The Patient Transportation Fund, in other words, is truly a lifesaver for some. These funds allow them to receive the care they need, improving their overall quality of life.

Baby Steps Fund supports families in good times and bad When a new baby enters the world, the experience for the parents can be overwhelming. If the baby does not survive, it can be devastating. Our Baby Steps Fund exists to help these families cope with the effects these events have on their lives. •
Forever My Child – Through our Forever My Child program, we serve families coping with fetal or infant loss with tangible reminders of their baby. “We make sure they leave the hospital with mementos they can hold on to,” explains Angela Christesen, fund administrator. That includes plaster of paris molds of their infant’s footprints, photographs and other items. “We also provide a teddy bear, so mom doesn’t leave the hospital without something in her arms,” Christesen says. In 2015, the Baby Steps Fund supported six families that experienced fetal or neonatal deaths. In one case, the fund also paid $900 for funeral expenses for a family that lacked the financial means to bury their infant daughter. “This small act brought this grieving family some level of comfort,” says Christesen. “And that’s why we’re here.”

Lactation Center – New moms have a lot to learn – especially if they want to breastfeed their baby. But with so many changes in their lives, many will give up. That’s why we created our fund-supported Lactation Center, which provides new moms with breastfeeding training and support, as well as breast pumps and other supplies. “Our goal is to make breastfeeding a success for both a mother and her child,” explains Christesen.
The Baby Steps Fund is invaluable in other ways as well. For parents who have infants weighing less than five pounds, it provides the “angel car beds” needed to transport them safely home. “No one anticipates having a baby this small,” says Christesen. “And it’s a $100 cost, in addition to what they’ve already spent on a regular car seat. These angel car beds are designed especially for their small size.” In 2015, 20 new mothers benefited from Baby Steps services. “We are so fortunate to have the Hospital Foundation to help families in these situations,” says Christesen. “It takes a little of the stress out of a difficult situation.”

hen we think about the thousands of people from our region who contribute to PCRMC and our Hospital Foundation each year, we are overwhelmed. Of course, the funding each of you provide is important. Without it, we couldn’t provide the many “unfunded” services that are necessary to meet the needs of our population and build a happy, healthy community. But we are often more overwhelmed by the sheer breadth of the support we receive. It comes from the young and the old, from people with substantial resources and people with few. It comes from mothers who have had babies and grandfathers who have undergone cancer treatment here. It comes from grieving families who have had to tell their dearest loved ones goodbye – and from grateful patients who got a second chance at life. Our support comes from businesses, private donors and charitable organizations across Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Texas counties. That’s because people here understand that when one of us suffers, we all suffer. We are fortunate to live in a community where we all have each other’s backs. We are fortunate to live in a community that is
