The forgotten — the unwanted — the unloved — how many animals are sitting in our shelters feeling this way? The once beloved puppy who became a nuisance, the family cat who was left behind when the family moved, and the adorable bunny who was given as a gift in a child’s Easter basket — all forgotten and left to feel unwanted and unloved. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of giving an animal a forever home. This is easily achieved by researching the care and maintenance needs of any animal to which you are thinking of becoming a guardian to, as well as asking yourself if you are ready for the commitment. In this article we’ll cover some of the issues associated with the surgical sterilization of dogs and cats, “spaying” of females and “neutering” of males. But first, let’s see if a couple common thoughts about spaying and neutering are true or false.

True or False?

• It is a good idea to let your cat or dog have at least one heat cycle prior to spaying.

False: There are no medical advantages to letting your pet go through one heat cycle.

• Spaying or neutering will make my pet fat and lazy.

False: Rarely. Far more commonly, obesity is simply the result of too many calories and too little exercise.

• I should breed my pet because she is so cute and I’m sure I can easily sell her litter.

False: Shelters are full of darling and often purebred puppies and kittens. And medical expenses associated with birth can become quite expensive if there are complications.

Spaying or neutering your dog or cat is one of the most important things you can do for your pet, and not just for their health, but also for the benefit of the community. Every year, millions of unwanted dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens, are needlessly euthanized. The good news is that every pet owner can help make a difference. By having your dog or cat surgically sterilized so it cannot reproduce, you will do your part to prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens and can enhance your pet’s health and quality of life.

In addition to the prevention of unwanted litters, spaying and neutering may reduce many behavioral problems associated with the mating instinct (e.g., marking territory, humping, roaming, and aggression). Yet another set of benefits directly relate to the health of your pet: in males, reduction or elimination of the risk of conditions such as testicular cancer and prostatic hyperplasia; and in females, prevention of heat cycles and the nuisance associated with them, and reduction or elimination of the risk of conditions such as ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, and uterine infection. Reducing roaming may lower the risks of your dog being hit by a car, fighting, or biting people or other dogs.

Spaying and neutering are considered major surgical procedures.

General anesthesia is administered during the surgery. Like any surgical procedure, sterilization is associated with some anesthetic and surgical risk, but the overall incidence of complications is very, very low, especially when proper precautions are taken, such as a thorough physical examination, pre-surgical blood screening, intravenous fluids, continuous monitoring of patient vital signs and anesthetic depth by a dedicated technician anesthetist, and continuous observation during recovery from anesthesia.

Additionally, pain-relieving medications should be administered. Ask your veterinarian to confirm that these precautions are used at their facility.

The American Veterinary Medical Association supports early (8 to 16 weeks of age) spay/neuter in dogs and cats in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted animals of these species and to reduce or eliminate the incidence of the adverse health conditions mentioned above. You’ll want to consult with your veterinarian about the most appropriate time to spay or neuter your pet based upon its breed, age, and physical condition.

April Harris, Division Director of Salt Lake County Animal Services, says that the county shelter is continually battling the pet overpopulation problem. They consume significant resources to ensure that the majority of animals presenting to the shelter are returned to their owner or adopted into a new home. They are successful in doing so with close to 90% of the animals, but their goal is to keep animals from coming to the shelters at all. She feels their best weapon in reducing overpopulation is to prevent more births through spaying and neutering of as many dogs and cats as possible.

Diabetes mellitus is the disease that results from consistently elevated levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. You may think diabetes is a condition that primarily affects humans; however, it also impacts our four-legged companions. Taking your pet to the veterinarian if you notice the classic clinical signs and following his or her recommendations for follow-up care ensures the best care for your pet. Similar to us, our dog and cat family members can experience numerous secondary health problems as a result of uncontrolled or poorly managed diabetes.

This “negative energy balance” causes the body to turn to other sources for energy — mainly protein and fat stores. This eventually causes two of the four cardinal signs of diabetes: weight loss and normal or increased appetite. The other two classic signs are increased drinking and urination. This occurs when excessive

Two main hormones regulate the blood glucose level: insulin and glucagon. When blood glucose is high, the pancreas secretes insulin, which is the protein “key” that drives glucose into your cells to be used as energy. However, when blood glucose is low, the pancreas secretes glucagon to release glucose into the blood from the liver.

Diabetes occurs when there is insufficient insulin to drive glucose into the cells, resulting in an elevation of blood glucose levels, as well as an inability of the cells to use glucose as a source of energy.

The cells are starving in the midst of plenty — think of it as if you are the cell, and there is a lock on your fridge or pantry, and you do not have the key!

All tests are not equal. Get out the red pen because some are badly designed, destined to be poorly graded. These tests are simply: • Unnecessary • Cruel • Deadly

No, not referring to those torturous math tests in eighth grade. I’m talking about animal testing.

Since the 1920s, animals from insects, fish, and birds to mice, rats, rabbits, sheep, cats, dogs, and primates have been subjected to testing in the name of public safety. The numbers boggle the mind. According to the ASPCA, more than 15 million mammals are used in research every year, with roughly half of them in painful and/or distressing studies. Many are not given pain medicines or even anesthesia for surgeries, particularly rats and mice that have no protections under the Animal Welfare Act, and they make up 90% of test subjects.

Where Do Research Animals Come From?

Some animals are bred specifically for research. Others are bought from breeders, collected as strays, or taken from animal shelters, and then sold to laboratories.

Utah is one of five states that requires shelters to surrender animals to known dealers who will resell them to research facilities.

But, it’s a necessary evil, right?

No. In many cases, the science is

questionable, with results that are unreliable or not applicable to humans. Bizarrely, despite decades of use, the Lethal Dose 50 test has never been scientifically validated, confirming results are predictive of chemical effects in people. One estimate is that 92% of tests “passed” on animals failed on humans, because animals and humans react differently to various substances.

If you believe we have the right to subject animals to such, some tests were arguably justified in delivering beneficial vaccines (e.g., polio and hepatitis B), medical procedures, medicine, nutrition, etc. But just because some research has proved useful doesn’t mean all research has been.

Cosmetic testing is a case in point.

Humane alternatives also exist, and they can be cheaper, faster, and more accurate at predicting human responses. Scientifically validated alternatives include using cell and tissue cultures (such as EpiDerm™) and corneas from eye banks to identify corrosive substances, eye and skin irritants, and skin toxicity and penetration. Computer models can replicate chemical activity within the human body and interaction with different cells.

Common cosmetic tests include the Draize Test (drops put in the eyes) and Lethal Dose 50 (force feeding product until 50% of animals die). Draize tested animals, traditionally rabbits whose cornea structure differs significantly from that of humans, have been known to break their spines trying to escape the pain. Lethally dosed animals typically experience convulsions, vomiting, paralysis, and bleeding as they die.

And many more are subjected to a gamut of other tests – some too horrible to describe – only to be “euthanized” when done.

Because of the questionable science and alternatives available, many recognize that testing cosmetics on animals is antiquated and unethical. Some countries mandate that cosmetics be “cruelty free.” For example, the European Union’s ban on any animaltested cosmetics or ingredients, regardless of location of said testing, that will take effect next month, and Israel’s ban became law in January. Progressive companies – such as Paul Mitchell, Merle Norman, Dermatologica, Trader Joe’s, and Urban Decay – produce quality, safe products available in stores everywhere.

As individual consumers, we can make a difference too with how we spend our money.

One, we’ll feel better about the products we use. Two, companies will pay attention. If companies aren’t motivated by principles, they certainly are by profits.

glucose in the blood spills over into the urine, which also pulls more body water into the urine. In other words, they urinate more and have to drink more to stay hydrated. If you notice these classic clinical signs, your pet could have diabetes and should be taken to your veterinarian for an exam.

Your veterinarian will likely collect blood and urine from your pet to check for elevated glucose levels. The diagnosis of diabetes is based on the classic signs and your pet’s history in conjunction with corresponding laboratory findings. Your veterinarian may need to do additional diagnostic tests to determine if your pet has diabetes.

If your pet is diagnosed with diabetes there are multiple methods of therapy, depending on whether your pet is a dog or a cat. The mainstay of therapy is administering insulin injections to your pet once or twice daily. However, it has been estimated that up to 80% of affected cats have non-insulin-dependent diabetes (Type II), which may be managed eventually with a diet change. Dogs are more likely to have insulin-dependent diabetes (Type I) and usually require insulin injections for life. Your veterinarian will decide which type and how much insulin to use; but be patient, the appropriate insulin dose needs to be determined by starting low and slowly raising it to the required dose. This is based on the way your pet reacts at home and the results of rechecked blood tests. The risk with starting too high is a potentially fatal low blood glucose level.

Regular and moderate exercise, appropriate type and quantity of food, as well as regular veterinary checkups, are important steps to ensure the health and longevity of your beloved feline or canine companion.

Any pet with diabetes can develop complications. The most common ones include the following: urinary tract infections, kidney infections, pancreatitis, cataracts in the eyes (dogs only), and fatty liver disease (usually in cats). A severe and sometimes fatal form of uncontrolled diabetes called diabetic ketoacidosis can occur in both dogs and cats.

From the moment I saw him I was in love. Wiggling blindly underneath a Christmas tree, searching for his mom and screaming for his brothers and sisters.

I think my husband knew it was all over, the look in my eyes must have said it all. We were about to add another member to our already crowded family. Now here I was, only a week later, on my way to the vet with what should be a healthy four week old puppy in my arms, but something was wrong. The breeder had called us only a day earlier, telling us that Otto was slipping fast.

He wasn’t keeping his food or water down, out of energy, and running out of time. My emotions were already fragile, I had been suffering from a dark depression I didn’t think would ever end. Maybe that’s why I wanted him so badly, I just wanted something to make me happy, even if for a little while.

The vet told us we had to take Otto away from the breeder, this little guy would need some extra attention, and even then there were no guarantees. She informed us that Otto may have a condition called Megaesophagus (a surprisingly common condition that affects Germen Shepherds), and would never lead a normal life. His esophagus hadn’t formed correctly and instead of working like a muscle to push food down into his stomach, it filled up like a balloon and then came right back out. Whenever I touched his neck he cried out in obvious pain and discomfort.

“That dog would be dead if it was up to me.” Chad, my husband’s son-in-law, says. He’s just watched me spoon feed Otto another combination of food we’re trying, probably the third of fourth different concoctions this week. I’m holding Otto upright while he wiggles and screams in apparent agony, filling the house with ear shattering noise. We laughed at the videos on the internet of dogs sitting up in what’s called a “bailey chair,” a device used to keep a dog upright for 20 minutes or more, allowing the food to be taken down into his stomach by gravity. After about 15 minutes Otto’s cries suddenly stop, and I can see his puppy belly become extended with the food I’d just fed him. I had already been doing this for weeks, even taking him to work every

day so I could feed Otto a smaller amount more often. Some days his food seems to go down perfectly and sometimes we fight for every meal. Our carpets are already wrecked at this point and my emotions are on edge. Our vet has told us that one of the deadly consequences of Megaesophagus is a fluid buildup in the lungs caused by the constant throwing up. Otto often will get a fluid cough causing me to panic and we are often taking emergency trips to the vet.

The weeks and months started to pass, Otto’s puppyhood was filled with vet visits and failed attempts at new kinds of food and new ways to feed him, usually with a wooden spoon and holding him in my lap for extended periods of time while I massage his neck. One of the major contributors to my depression was an eating disorder that I’d struggled with for almost 7years, and it was strange to me to watch Otto struggle for his life and every morsel of food. I didn’t realize it then, but Otto was changing me. During that time I struggled often, sometimes having no motivation to live or try and succeed in life or my new marriage. Otto’s presence gave me a reason to carry on. I’d often heard from friends and relatives that Otto would be better off if we just put him down, that it was unfair to allow him to struggle like he did. I knew it would be hard to find someone else to take care of him if I was no longer around. Sometimes the best motivation to get out of bed when you’re feeling down is a wet tongue by an enthusiastic puppy on your face.

Otto and I survived those hard first months. He turned one last November, and is now a happy, healthy German Shepherd. Sometimes he gets into the chicken food, which in turn clogs him up, and we have a bad couple of days where Otto and our carpets suffer. Believe me it’s no easy task to hold up a full-grown dog until his food goes down, but over all we’ve found success. Many told me to give up on Otto, that the struggle wasn’t worth the time or the hassle, but I wouldn’t have my life any other way. Otto and I have struggled together. He has taught me so much about what it means to be a good person and what it means to love unconditionally. Many times Otto has been there for me, a strong quiet presence consoling me while I cried. He has never given up on me and it would be unfair for me to give up on him.

People have told me that I saved Otto’s life, but I think we saved each other’s.

Farm animals have the same emotional capacity as traditional companions like dogs and cats, yet modern cruelty laws do not apply to them. Under the law, they are seen as mere objects for human use.

Because bunnies express their feelings a little differently than dogs and cats, researching bunny body language can help you decode what your bunny is saying, which will lead to a deeper bond.

Housing: Despite the popularity of outdoor rabbit hutches,

bunnies belong inside. In fact, the best situation for a bunny is to have full access to your living areas when you’re home. This may not be possible because it requires extensive rabbit-proofing – including securing all electrical wires and protecting wood furniture from chewing. You can still offer a bunny an ideal home if you can bunny-proof just one of the rooms in which you spend the most time. In addition to bunny-proofing the space you’ll share with your bunny, you also need a safe, confined space for your bunny. This could be a small, completely bunny-proofed room, or could be a “rabbit condo” with a solid (not wire) floor.

Finally, to make your bunny a successful house rabbit, you’ll need to provide a litter box – and training if your bunny is new to indoor life.

Other Companion Animals: Though some cats and dogs do

get along with some bunnies, these relationships generally need patient and careful fostering, especially relationships between dogs and bunnies. Don’t expect an immediate friendship to bloom – but if you are willing to devote the time, and your companion animals are open to it, these can become rewarding relationships for everyone involved.

acho the cockatiel had lived as part of my little flock for about a year when we discovered his liver was failing. I’d taken guardianship of this feisty, whistling charmer from a rescue organization and grown to love him greatly, so the vet’s diagnosis of liver failure was difficult to hear.

When antibiotics didn’t cure the issue, and the stress of multiple vet visits seemed to make him more ragged than healthy, I faced the inevitability that Nacho would pass away soon. I decided his last days would be as comfy as possible, full of favorite treats and peace and quiet at home. To help increase his comfort, I decided to try giving him Reiki treatments.

Giving Nacho Reiki treatments ended up being both simple and effective. When I put my hands up to share the energy, he got very calm and seemed to enjoy the comforting Reiki energy, as well as the time with me.

I expected Nacho would pass after a few months. I was wrong.

He lived another three years. He had some low times, but would quickly perk up with a Reiki treatment. I truly believe Reiki, along with his sheer feistiness, is what kept him alive so much longer than I’d expected.

--Puppies For Profit--

One of the many things that makes this country great is its’

entrepreneurial spirit. Everyone is free to start a business and make as much money as they possibly can. It is the American way.

But is it ethical or morale to use puppies in pursuit of profits?

Even more troubling? The safety and overall welfare of the animals.

While some of the people “renting” these puppies may be well meaning and responsible, there is always the risk that they will be placed in dangerous situations. Anyone who has worked in animal welfare for any length of time knows only too well what can possibly happen.

Another concern? Where is this college student getting these puppies and what will she do with them when they no longer serve her purpose of making money?

This issue came up recently when a college student established a small company renting puppies, by the hour or the day, to fellow students. For that matter, she will rent them to anyone willing to sign a “contract.”

The Humane Society of Utah believes puppies, and for that matter all dogs, need stability and consistency in their lives. Moreover, while Several media outlets contacted the Humane Society of Utah, some have theorized that it would be “better to have puppies abused including the Los Angeles Times, and asked for a statement. This fledgling business owner believes that having people take care of a dog for a few hours might give them a better idea of what it’s like to own one. While there may be some limited merit to this line of thinking, the Humane Society is concerned about a business arranging unsupervised visits off premises with clients who have only received a cursory screening.

The Humane Society believes anyone considering adoption should come to a shelter and spend at least an hour or two or three with an animal. Bring the entire family, including cats and dogs that are already in the home. These encounters should take place in a controlled environment where trained personnel can monitor the interaction and answer any questions. When people truly invest time and effort they understand full well the lifetime commitment they are making. “Renting” an animal requires no commitment.

But here’s the crux of this matter. This business deals with puppies.

This is a critical time of life. They are susceptible to illness and disease and the likelihood of getting sick increases exponentially if they are moved from one place or person to another. As for house training, that is challenging enough when a pup is in a stable environment with owners willing to spend the time required to teach them where to go to the bathroom. They cannot learn this lesson if the “bathroom” is always in a different place.

Each year the HSU places more than 7,000 homeless animals. When they are adopted, it is only after someone has spent a good deal of time with the animal, filled out an extensive application (some of which are denied in the best interests of the animal), and have gone through a thorough session with an adoption counselor. Since animal welfare organizations operate on a non-profit basis the “bottom line” is not the driving factor. Decisions are based on what’s best for the animals.

Obviously, no sane person would tolerate a business renting human babies so people could see what it’s like to parent an infant. For that same reason, those of us who love and care for animals should not remain silent on this issue.

If a prospective pet owner really wants to spend time with a cat or dog, please encourage them to come and volunteer at the Humane Society of Utah or one of the many other worthy shelters in our community. It costs nothing but time. There is no “rental fee.” The help will be most welcome and would improve the life of a shelter animal desperately in need of the time, attention, and care.

Linnies come in a variety of colors and live about 10-20 years. Aside from a “terrible twos” stage during their first molt at about six months of age, they’re calm, sweet companions who get along easily with other birds. Because they’re indigenous to the mountainous regions in South America, they do well in higher elevations and are more comfortable with colder temperatures than other parrots.

Because linnies aren’t strong flyers, they spend a lot of time on the ground, so be careful not to step on them. It’s easy to train them to stay on a platform when they are out of the cage, especially if there are toys for them to play with. They’re also drawn to snuggling in couch cushions or blankets, so be sure to look before you sit to keep your bird safe.

If you’re looking for a companion bird, one linnie is plenty. They are very keen to snuggle with you and will treat you as if you are their soul mate. Linnies spend most of their time on the bottom of their cage or upside down, so do not be alarmed if your linnie doesn’t like to sit on his perches all the time. They are less active than budgerigars (parakeets, parrotlets, etc.) and do not sit in the same posture. In fact, it is not uncommon to see linnies sleeping on their perch horizontally with their head down and their tail in the air.

ave you ever thought about snowshoeing? The snow is still here despite what the groundhog said, so you might as well enjoy it. You can still hit the trails, a snow-layered golf course or city park, or a closed canyon road, such as the one a few miles up Millcreek Canyon.

The cold is no excuse to stay home. Dress appropriately, and you’re good to go. Believe me, once you get moving, you’ll be comfortable and warm.

WITH YOUR

Gloves or Mittens

Gloves allow more finger flexibility, nice when strapping on the snow shoes. Mittens are warmer because they trap body heat inside.

Headwear

Take along a warm fitted hat that covers your ears. On a warmer day, a headband covering your ears will be adequate.

Snowshoes

Fluffy is ready with her fur coat, but you can give her extra protection with a coat and booties. Here are some tips to ensure you’re both ready to romp in the white stuff.

Clothing

Layer, layer, layer: long johns, long sleeved shirt and pants, and a coat. Pockets of air will do the rest by trapping body heat.

Traction devices are useful for packed snow or intermittent patches of snow and slush. I use “Yak Trak” which are made of springy rubber with wound steel coils. There are other brands/ variations.

Boots

Feet easily get cold. And wet. While you can get away with tennis shoes for a short excursion, I highly recommend insulated, waterproof boots that are at least ankle high.

Gaiters

If you don’t have ski pants, get leg gaiters.

Gaiters connect to your boots and provide

protection against the cold. Read reviews so you can buy with confidence.

Be sure to size the booties for best fit. Sizing depends on the manufacturer. Some base it on the width of the paw. Others on the length, from the front edge of the small pads to the back edge of the large pad. So, if ordering online, be sure to check out their sizing guidelines. If possible, I recommend trying on booties at a store for a good fit.

Coat or Sweater

For a short-haired dog, consider covering her with an outer layer to protect against the cold and wet. Take her to a couple of pet stores and outdoor recreation outfitters and try on coats before investing. You’ll want something comfortable, snug, and easy to put on. *************************

Avian Sanctuary and Protection of Utah Jennafer Martin

Whether it’s in an abandoned lot or in the business parks of downtown Salt Lake City, if there’s a wild or domesticated bird in need of help along the Wasatch Front, the Avian Sanctuary and Protection of Utah (ASAP) will come to its rescue. Dedicated to the well-being of birds in the urban environments they share with people, this organization has been advocating for and educating about the safety of birds -- both wild and domestic – since 2008.

Not only do they regularly check areas where birds gather and nest to make sure that the area and water are free of chemicals and pollutants, they also work with local animal control organizations to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome ducks, pigeons, peacocks, parrots, geese, guinea fowl, turkeys and more.

Richard Nowak, ASAP’s President and Executive Director, has been interested in birds since his mother gave him a cockatiel when he was a boy. This fascination began 39 years’ experience with birds that grew into a private bird sanctuary and rehabilitation center, as well as ASAP. In 2012, the group took in 177 birds and found homes for 163 of them. At the time of this interview, the group had taken in 54 birds so far in 2013, starting off this year busier than the last. Taking care of dozens of different kinds of birds takes a great deal of time and dedication. Local grocers Reams and Smiths donate produce and other food for the birds, which helps defray costs, but they still depend on donations and volunteers to keep the birds healthy and the organization going.

1. Am I willing to put in the time?

Chicks live to be 12-20 years old, so taking care of them is a dedication of decades. For the first four weeks, your chicks will need to be checked on five times a day and require multiple feedings. They’ll need to be kept in a warm environment constantly, usually under a heat lamp. And after the first weeks, as they grow, they’ll need to be fed daily and their coop cleaned regularly to keep them healthy and safe.

2. Will my city allow me to have chickens?

Check your city’s guidelines and zoning ordinances before bringing home a chick so you’re able to keep your chicks throughout their lives. Many cities allow people to keep chickens but not roosters, and you may not know the sex of your chick till it’s too late to keep him.

Donations and volunteers also help to keep the education arm of this organization going strong. They present courses on keeping areas safe for birds to groups at day cares, charter schools and senior centers, bringing along birds to give people experience with them. A newly hatched emu is currently being trained to go along on these educational outings to give attendees upclose contact with a wild bird.

ASAP has plans to expand their education outreach as they grow over the years.

Irish dog Breeds James Maughan

Since St. Patrick’s Day is quickly approaching, we must celebrate dogs of Irish descent. Ireland has quite a diversity of loving, fourlegged companions. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), established in 1884, the following dogs are considered to be of Irish origin:

• Irish Terrier

for apartment-dwellers. They are excellent hunters with pleasant personalities. Unfortunately, they have a short-life span – the average being about 7 years.

The Water Spaniel has a bushy, hypoallergenic coat, which makes it ideal for allergy sufferers. Excellent swimmers, these energetic companions are wonderful hunting dogs, both on land and in the water. Their tales are bare and whip-like, earning them nicknames such as Rat-Tail or Whip-Tail Spaniels. Their heavy coats require regular brushing and trimming.

The beautiful Irish Setter is a popular family dog. Its flowing, silky red coat always causes heads to turn. While they can be great with older children, each Setter has a distinct personality. They may be extremely docile, or pushy and energetic. In any case, they love to be included in family activities. As with most Irish breeds, Setters were traditionally bred for hunting, specifically retrieving. If you decide to add a Setter puppy to your household, be prepared for three rambunctious years before it reaches adulthood.

The Irish Red and White Setter was added to the AKC official list Two of these breeds, the Irish Setter and the Irish Water Spaniel, of breeds in 2009. The Glen of Imaal Terrier, named after a region in the Wicklow Mountains, is one of the most recent additions to the breed list (2004).

It is a focused hunter and a gentle companion for families with older children.

The Kerry Blue Terrier is a noble-looking dog, considered by many to be the unofficial National Terrier of Ireland. WORK THAT WADDLE Basset Hounds on Parade

How do you begin your St. Patrick’s Day celebration? Do you whip up a fresh batch of green pancakes? Throw on your favorite grasscolored shirt? Try to convince people that you’re Irish to steal a kiss?

Imagine kicking off the festivities by howling back at a parade of a hundred floppy-eared, droopy-eyed Basset Hounds waddling through the middle of The Gateway mall. The Utah Friends of Basset Hounds invite all to attend their 10th annual Wasatch Waddle on March 16.

The Wasatch Waddle continues to be a favorite feature in the Hibernian Society’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Salt Lake City. They show up rain or shine, and it is a spectacle to behold. The concourse of Basset Hounds parading by on stubby legs always elicits howls from the crowd. “We do love to show them off!” says Peggy Chudd, President of UFBH. “Basset Hounds are a very social breed, and they love the attention.”

The Bassets on parade are made up mostly of those available for adoption, hounds previously adopted through the organization, and UFBH’s “Forever Fosters” (hounds less likely to be adopted due to health issues or age). Parade goers will even see a few “wannabe Bassets” sporting long silk ears, and a “Pooped Pooch Pickup” for hounds unable to waddle the entire route. All dogs participating wear a traditional green derby in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, with extra decoration worn by potential adoptees. All dogs in the Wasatch Waddle are accompanied by their families and foster families.

“One of the wonderful things about the day is seeing the Bassets who have been adopted from UFBH over the years,” says Chudd. “Last year we saw Barney who came to us from a shelter out of state after he had been tased by an employee who couldn’t catch him. He stayed with us

for over a year, slowly learning to trust people. He came back for the parade about eight months after he had been adopted. I squatted down near him, and he snuggled up against me and gave me kisses. It was amazing to see him so happy.”

For anyone looking to get involved with UFBH, there are many opportunities. All Basset Hound owners are welcome to be part of the Wasatch Waddle with a $15 registration fee (After March 6 the fee is $20. A T-shirt comes with the first $75 in pledges). UFBH is always looking for foster families and volunteers to help with events. To volunteer or adopt a Basset Hound, visit UFBH at their website or on Facebook, or give them a call (contact information below).

“We’re a 24/7 organization,” says Chudd. “When adopting or fostering you can be sure that we’re here for you and your new family member.”

UFBH is willing to help with behavior and training issues, and will even take their hounds back if the family is unable to care for them for any reason.

“Since cofounding UFBH, I’m pretty hooked on these short, wrinkly, big footed, long eared hounds,” Chudd admits. UFBH looks forward to showing off their beloved Basset Hounds at this year’s parade.

Doing The Right Thing James Maughan “A lie don’t seem a lie anymore when it’s meant to save a dog . . .” (pg. 61) “Shiloh” is a must-read for any dog lover, from age 5 to 95. You can purchase it at nearly any bookstore, or borrow it from your local library.

Marty, the main character in Phyllis Reynolds Naylor’s charming young adult novel “Shiloh,” proves the old saying, “The ends justify the means.”

From the beginning, the reader recognizes young Marty’s kind-hearted personality. He likes to shoot his gun, but refuses to hunt. He worries about the creatures on his family’s property, especially when they end up as dinner.

He mentions to his Dad that he wants to be a traveling veterinarian when he grows up.

It is only natural, then, that he take Shiloh, a quiet runaway beagle pup, under his wing. He discovers that his neighbor Judd Travers – notorious for the mistreatment of animals, has abused the puppy. Seeking to save the tiny creature, Marty constructs a pen and begins sneaking him food.

In order to keep the secret, Marty finds himself stretching the truth. He feels bad about deceiving his parents, but sincerely believes that he is doing the right thing.

“Shiloh” is an excellent opportunity for parents and children and children to bond.

While discussing the ending, my son Noah explained why he liked the ending: “Judd Travers learns to be a nice person.” I couldn’t agree more. Don’t miss out on this touching tale!
