Welcome to the Pet Professional Guild’s Educational Summit 2016! 016 has been another fabulous year for the Pet Professional Guild with lots of new programs rolled out, new partnerships forged, more members than ever before joining our association and some really exciting plans for the future. This will be our last year in Florida for a while because next year we will be rolling out a Summit experience like no other. Here at Pet Professional Guild we like to be innovative in our approach and blaze the trails. With that in mind, we plan to host Summits across the country in an entirely new format. We feel this will not only be fabulous in terms of education, but will also be a format that will fully support our industry partners and provide better opportunities for more members to attend. For now though, let’s all take a breath and focus on the next four days of education, fun and networking.

2

I hope to see you all at our Welcome Cocktail Party on Monday night. Please do stop by and say hello to the Board of Directors and the Pet Professional Guild Steering Committee. We will all be on site to host you. I am also very excited about our Quiz Night and Munch and Learn events. It’s not too late to attend if you can get your reservation made on Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Just visit the registration desk and we’ll organize tickets for you. Join us too for our morning and afternoon breaks. They will be hosted outside the Vendor Exhibitor area. That way you can network, meet new friends, enjoy some refreshments and browse at your own pace. Please do support our sponsors and vendors. They help us provide the means to host the Summit and, for that, we thank each and every one of them. As you can see from the schedule our format has changed somewhat this year. We will all be together each morning for the General Sessions before breaking up into smaller sessions where there is an amazing variety of presenters and topics available for you to choose from. We are so lucky to attract the names that we do, not just as outstanding presenters but fabulous ambassadors for force-free training and pet care too.

If you have any questions or comments while you are here please do not hesitate to let us know. The PPG Help Desk in the Vendor Exhibitor area will be fully manned outside session times so pop along and let us know how we can better provide for your Summit experience. Make sure too that you check out the exciting Summit Special Offers for our new Pet Dog Ambassador program (see page 5) and the Pet Professional Accreditation Board where we have waived all eligibility fees for a limited time only (see page 8)! I am so looking forward to getting to know you all and meeting old friends again. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.

General Session Presenter: Dr. Soraya Juarbe-Diaz r. Soraya Juarbe-Diaz has the longest established behavior referral practice in the state of Florida. Known as Dr. JD to pet owners throughout the state, she received her BS in biology and her DVM from Cornell University, New York. She was in mixed and small animal practice before returning to her alma mater for specialty training in veterinary behavior medicine. In 1997, she relocated to Florida and established a referral veterinary behavior practice that saw cases throughout the state (currently serving only one location in Maitland). She has been an adjunct professor at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine and an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee's College of Veterinary Medicine. For two years, she was the assistant editor of the Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research and continues

D

to be a member of its editorial board. She has also served on several committees of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and is a reviewer for several veterinary professional journals. PRESENTATIONS By The Case: Come and see what a behaviorist's caseload is like, and where you fit in the overall treatment of referred cases. Both dog and cat cases will be presented.

Spin Doctors at Large - Is It Real or Hype?: Can you believe everything you see, read or hear? So many claims of "scientific" proof are empty or faulty claims. Come and learn how to read between the lines and separate pseudo-science from the real thing. The focus will be on animal behavior, but what you will learn will apply to anything claiming scientific validity. You will also learn how to write truthfully about what you do.

The Cat's Meow - What Did She Say?: Want to get into cat behavior? Don't know where to start? A cat behavior primer will be followed by common behavior cat problems and how to treat them, including when to refer for pharmacological assistance.

General Session Presenter: Chirag Patel hirag Patel PG Cert (CAB), BSc (Hons), DipCABT runs UK-based animal behavior and training specialists Domesticated Manners and conducts consults with pet owners, organizations such as Guide Dogs for the Blind UK and The Kong Company, and zoos. He also presents seminars worldwide, writes for popular dog magazines and blogs, works part-time as an assistant head of canine training and behavior at Dogs Trust and is the scientific advisor for the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums Training Group. Patel previously worked at the university as the head

C

trainer. He is currently doing his MSc in applied behavior analysis at Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. PRESENTATIONS Behavior Science beyond the ‘Quadrant' and ‘Learning Theory’: Many dog trainers take an interest in a science based approach. However the behavior science dissemination seems to get stuck on popular psychology. Behavior science has so many more intricate details that can help empower the lives of human care givers and the animals in their care. Patel will use practical examples relevant to the work of animal trainers and behavior consultants to show how science is not just for the rat in the laboratory.

Puppy Socialization (Lecture and LAB): What does socialization actually mean behaviorally and in practice? In this lecture Patel will discuss the topic of socialization in puppies and, in the LAB session, demonstrate how he puts the theory into practice. Areas covered will include the pitfalls of poor socialization practices; behavioral outcomes of well socialized dogs; and how humans and treats can get in the way. Six puppies, aged 12-16 weeks, can be registered for working spots. Contact Rebekah King: membership@petprofessionalguild.com.

eronica Boutelle is the founder of business consultancy dog*tec, and has been helping dog trainers help dogs since 2003. She is also a published author and writes on business topics for many dog training industry journals, as well as being a sought-after speaker. Her background as a trainer, her business expertise and her work as an educator have put her in a unique position to help professional dog trainers learn to become as skilled in business as they are in training.

V

PRESENTATION Tackle Your Teaching: This session will help you develop new approaches to tackle your teaching challenges and set your students up for success. It will cover classroom management quandaries, such as how to handle the students who insist on talking all through class; how to more actively engage students; how to find smoother ways to handle the widely varied skill and experience levels of your human and canine students and more.

MALENA DEMARTINI PRICE

alena DeMartini Price is renowned for her expertise in canine separation anxiety disorder. She is an honors graduate of the San Francisco SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers, author of Treating Separation Anxiety in Dogs, and has contributed articles on separation anxiety to numerous publications. Her particular strengths lie in reading the subtleties of dog body language and guiding owners patiently through the gentle process of healing their dogs.

M

PRESENTATION Separation Anxiety - Three Key Elements and a Pink Elephant: This session will examine the severity of separation anxiety and what that might mean for professionals taking on such cases. It will discuss whether or not using interactive feeding toys as part of a protocol can affect overall success, given the large role technology can play. It will also examine the common question – managing absences while working with separation anxiety, a disorder that is far more effectively remedied than is commonly believed.

JANIS BRADLEY

J

PRESENTATIONS Who Do You Trust? Cutting through the Confusion of Reading Research Studies: Uncritical acceptance of study results because they appeared in a scientific journal or were mentioned in a popular blog can lead to biased perceptions and expectations of behavior. This session will help you determine the strengths and weaknesses in how authors arrived at their conclusions. Do the Math: Behavior Evaluations Flunk: Attendees will learn why, when a shelter dog tests positive for dangerous behavior, it is much more likely that the test has failed the dog, rather than the dog has failed the test. Behavior evaluations of dogs in shelters are unlikely to be better than tossing a coin in predicting whether dogs, once adopted, are prone to being aggressive.

PAMELA DENNISON

amela Dennison CDBC CWRI is a member of the Dog Writers Association of America and a certified dog behavior consultant. She started her own business, Positive Motivation Dog Training, in 1996, and since then has helped thousands of dogs and handlers build their relationships and solve problems by teaching basic obedience through competition and working with a myriad of behavioral problems. She teaches puppy K, basic obedience through the Canine Good Citizen test, competition obedience, Rally-O and holds regular classes and seminars for aggressive dogs.

P

PRESENTATION Teach the Leash!: Walking on a loose leash is not a simple behavior. You cannot just teach your dog to walk on a loose leash. Additional skills need to be trained before you can get your dog to walk nicely. Loose leash walking requires teamwork from both sides and some dogs make pulling an art form. To that end, many “tools of torture” may be used to rectify the problem. How loose leash walking is handled (or mishandled) can set the stage for other behaviors too. To gain control, one must give it up as much as possible, and this presentation will show you how.
