Learning Objectives Objectives Through a class discussion, students will be able to define and apply the terms “isolationism” and “internationalism.” Through completing their packets, students will be able to analyze and identify underlying messages and themes conveyed in Dr. Seuss’ political cartoons. Through a class discussion, students will be able to identify three major themes that characterized Dr. Seuss’ WWII political cartoons. Through their exit cards, students will be able to compare and contrast the way propaganda was spread during WWII from the present. Procedure for Teaching Time Allocated: 45 minutes Procedure: Step 1: Introduction to the students: (about 8 minutes) As students enter the classroom, they will notice a political cartoon displayed on the projector. They will be encouraged to speculate the general time period and author of the political cartoon. Once the class arrives at the correct answers, I will connect the political cartoon to the unit we have been studying (WWII). Step 2: Activities: (about 30 minutes) After this introduction, the class will then be split into five groups. Each group will receive a packet with three of Dr. Seuss’ political cartoons (see group worksheets attached below). They are encouraged to discuss, analyze, and answer the questions of the packet in order to find an underlying theme that connects their political cartoons. 1

The class will then proceed into the PowerPoint which will display one political cartoon from each of the five groups. The group will identify the cartoon they found in their packet, reveal the theme they found, and explain why. In a follow-up discussion the class will then assess the theme of that group. Step 3: Closing: (about 8 minutes) Students will complete an exit card on how propaganda venues since the era of Dr. Seuss have changed and stayed the same over time. Assessment: Oral or written quiz/test Observation Self evaluation Drawing Worksheet Learning log/Quick write/Journal Peer editing/evaluation Interview/Conference Other: Exit Card
