A bold new festival for Sydney, Liveworks is championing the most provocative, risky, and ambitious new developments in experimental arts practice and connecting artists and audiences with dynamic and innovative new work across the Asia Pacific. Liveworks is presented as three distinct programs, which include the Major Works, a Free Performance Program, and a series of Public Programs. WELCOME TO LIVEWORKS Welcome to Performance Space’s Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art. I am delighted to share our first Liveworks program with you. Over seventeen days, Liveworks brings together a host of artists and works from across Australia and the Asia Pacific region that forge new ground in contemporary art and propose new ways of seeing the world, and ourselves. Blurring the boundaries between artforms and disciplines, the Liveworks artists expand the possibilities of what art can be and what it can do. We present Liveworks because we believe that experimentation, risk, and new perspectives are necessary not only to the forward momentum of art, but for a thriving and healthy culture more broadly. In the early decades of the 21st Century, our increasingly global outlook is challenged by critical questions about our relationship to the world and each other – the sustainability of our way of life and our relationship to our land and environment. We are tested by our immersion in rapidlyevolving new technologies and how they are transforming our social and cultural boundaries – and indeed, our sense of what it means to be human. The struggle to transcend narrow conceptions of gender, sexuality and selfhood continues to incite protest, critique, and social debate. And the pivotal role of Indigenous and non-Western cultures in shaping our past, present and future plays an ever more crucial role in our understanding of the world we know and inhabit. The artists involved in Liveworks offer us insights into how we can see differently – and how we might orient ourselves differently in the world. The Liveworks program is designed for you to take in multiple experiences in a single visit – from exhibitions to performances, discussions with artists, workshops, soundscapes and beyond. a message from the chair It is with great pleasure and excitement that I welcome you to our 2015 Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art. This is the first major festival for Performance Space, set to consolidate our position as a world leader in experimental arts. Performance Space is excited to take this next step in connecting artists and audiences with dynamic and innovative new works from around the world. I encourage you to fully immerse yourself in the Liveworks experience and engage in experimental art that will inspire and surprise you. Liveworks in 2015 presents a spectacular program of new works, brimming with artists that continue to push boundaries, challenge cultural assumptions and question social order. With an impressive line-up that includes over ninety artists in fourteen World Premieres and two Australian premieres, Liveworks cements Performance Space’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and experimental work of the highest calibre. We are thrilled to co-present new works by Jonathan Jones and Wade Marynowsky with Carriageworks, our valued collaborator. Continued partnerships with Force Majeure and Performing Lines through Mobile States have enriched the programming for this year’s festival. We are on a journey to deepen our relationship across our region and ensure that our programming brings the best of experimental work to Sydney. This year we are delighted to present the powerful new work Triumphs and Other Alternatives from New Zealand’s Muscle Mouth and the provoking trilogy of work from The Philippines’ Eisa Jocson, an exciting step towards fulfilling our Liveworks vision. guguma guriin | black stump Jonathan Jones 10 OCT - 7 NOV SAT 24 OCT 11AM Audio Described Performance & Tactile Tour The guguma guriin exhibition is open throughout Liveworks, as per times listed at performancespace.com.au FREE “Jonathan Jones claims the whole thing – the audience, the work, and the process – as his art” – Andrew Frost, Australian Art Collector Sydney-based Indigenous artist Jonathan Jones’ work illuminates histories and knowledge systems that permeate and connect our landscapes, inscribing them in our contemporary consciousness. Jones has been commissioned by Performance Space to create a major new exhibition for Liveworks. A member of the Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi nations of southeast Australia, Jones employs an array of materials and techniques in his work to explore Indigenous cultural forms and their continuity through history into the present moment. In guguma guriin, Jones explores de-colonisation through the reclamation of the artist’s own country. From repurposing found objects that bear the marks of white settlement to reviving Wiradjuri language, Jones re-examines the current place of Indigenous culture within Australian society.

Joined by Wiradjuri lawyer and advocate Robynne Quiggin, Jones and Van Hout will discuss the protocols and challenges of sharing cultural content.

Wade Marynowsky returns to Performance Space with the world premiere of his most ambitious project to date. Performed entirely by eight custombuilt automatons, Robot Opera highlights our relationship to technology in an entertaining, unsettling, and unexpected new light. Joined by lighting and choreographic collaborators Branch Nebula, the work is set to a throbbing live electronic score composed by experimental musician Julian Knowles, featuring robots, ambient drones, sub bass and glitchy electronica. Marynowsky brings together robotics, light installation, and experimental sound to create an immersive participatory experience, inviting the audience to step onto the dance-floor and let the robots lead.

Working on the experimental edge of creative robotics, Wade Marynowsky pushes the boundaries of performance practice by exploring notions of ‘robotic performance agency’ through ‘Human-Robot Interaction’. Marynowsky will be joined by Dr Ed Scheer to unpack questions around digital technology in performance and the concept of new media dramaturgy.

I might blow up someday is the premiere full-length performance work by fearless all-girl art collective, Hissy Fit. The collective will reclaim the ‘hysterical woman’ through the energy, intensity and politics of the all-female punk and metal music culture of the 1980’s and 90’s. Traversing choreography, sound, and live video, Hissy Fit will seduce the audience into a collective episode of mass hysteria – a live-art experience that will blow minds and shake bodies.

Join choreographer Victoria Hunt to explore the physical processes developed for her breathtaking new work Tangi Wai... the cry of water. Open to movers of all kinds, Hunt will use techniques informed by her BodyWeather practice to contemplate the connections between mind, body, creativity and culture in each individual.

Keren is an artist/curator and Creative Producer with the Australian Museum. Her tribal affiliations are to Nga¯ti Maniapoto, Tuwharetoa and Nga¯ti Mahanga. In conversation with Maori elder Graham Anderson, Keren will discuss the cultural richness of the terms Tangi and Wai and their significance to Maori people.

“It is a triumph [...] a work of visceral power, at once disturbing and weird, yet possessing a strange beauty that compels our attention” — Ann Hunt, Dominion Post Sculpture collides with live performance in Triumphs and Other Alternatives, the latest offering by multidisciplinary New Zealand company Muscle Mouth, directed by choreographer and Les Ballets C de la B performer, Ross McCormack. A grand parable, Triumphs and Other Alternatives explores the inherent obsession and traps that exist at the core of the creative process. Muscle Mouth’s second full-length work, Triumphs and Other Alternatives fuses the tactility and visceral nature of sculpture with the choreography of physical theatre to create a movement style unique to this exciting new company.

Ross McCormack will share tools for conceiving work and choreography, gained from his incredible ten-year performance history with Les Ballets C de la B, as well as his many independent choreographic works. Participants should prepare for physical improvisations, observing demonstrations, and be open to discussions throughout the workshop.

An introduction to Muscle Mouth guided by Australia’s foremost dance academic, Dr Erin Brannigan. Erin is Senior Lecturer in Dance at the University of New South Wales and works in the fields of dance and film as an academic and curator.

In Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster, Nicola Gunn seeks to question, probe and examine power relations and the very function of ‘art’ in a social context - with a hefty dose of activism, satire, and self-awareness. In Piece For Person and Ghetto Blaster, accompanied live by composer Kelly Ryall, Gunn sets up a space for dialogue with the audience in order to examine the possibility of personal liberation. The work considers conflict and friction as fundamental aspects of human interaction, revealing one woman’s attempt at navigating the moral complexities of becoming a better person.

Death of the Pole Dancer interrogates the gaze, provoking the audience to reflect on what they are observing, a woman in the throes of a pole-dancing routine. In Macho Dancer, Jocson embodies the “macho dance”, which investigates the domain of young men performing in nightclubs throughout the Philippines. Host uncovers the world of “Japayuki” – foreign entertainers hired from the Philippines to perform for the pleasure of ‘salary-men’ in clubs throughout Japan.

In a masterclass led by Jocson, participants will learn the sensual yet physically demanding vocabulary of macho dance. Jocson will also address the social phenomena, specific to the Philippines, out of which macho dance is born. Bold movers of all skill levels welcome!

Eisa Jocson discusses her celebrated and challenging trilogy of works with Australian radio and television presenter Fenella Kernebone, who will delve into the politics and economics that drive the exploitation of male and female bodies globally.

LIVEWORKS FREE PERFORMANCE PROGRAM Sited-works are brought to the fore in the Liveworks Free Performances Program with a bevy of short-form and durational works by local artists, taking place in the Carriageworks public space and corridors.

Dancing with Drones Starrs & Cmielewski 22 – 25 OCT The premiere of Starrs & Cmielewski’s Dancing With Drones will pit woman against drone in collaboration with dancer Alison Plevey, exploring the paradoxical intimacies of scale and speed, movement and size, enabled by drone technology through both filmed and live performance.

Nemeton Garth Knight 28 OCT – 1 NOV Visual artist Garth Knight’s Nemeton is a durational performance installation where ropes, rocks and human bodies interweave to form an evolving tableau in the Carriageworks public space. Working over a seven day period, Knight will construct the web-like sculpture in public throughout the day, employing live bodies to become ensnared in the installation at the culmination of his work each evening in a meditation on the connections between humans, nature, the built environment and desire.


25 MURA BUAI (Everyone, Everyone) Ghenoa Gela 4 – 7 NOV In partnership with Force Majeure, Performance Space presents dancer and choreographer Ghenoa Gela’s re-interpretation of the widely recognised Viewpoints structure for composition through the lens of her Torres Strait Islander culture and dance practice. Gela will lead an ensemble of dancers in a performance installation that invites the audience to engage with improvised movement vocabulary in a choreographed yet playful environment.

EMMA RAMSAY Liveworks Soundtrack 22 OCT – 7 NOV Emma Ramsay has long been intertwined in experimental arts and music in Sydney, and is a member of wayward dance band Holy Balm (Not Not Fun) and art band The Rangoons (Paradise Daily). Her soundtrack for the Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art will provide threads of Australian post punk, uplifting bohemia, eccentric disco and oddball percussive boogie to illustrate the diverse thoughts, textures and timbres of the festival program.

Repatriate Latai Taumoepeau 22 – 24 OCT A woman dances the inherited collective vocabulary of the Pacific Island Nations in a perspex tank. Swathed in flotation devices, the body is protected, as the tank fills with water and submerges the artist. In an embodied response to climate change, Repatriate highlights the ever-nearing possibility of dispossession for island communities. With her own body as the central focus, Taumoepeau probes existing power structures that perpetuate violence and lead to the devastating loss of cultural heritage.


Each Other ZIN 22 & 25 OCT & 30 – 31 OCT Each Other is an interactive, durational performance work by emerging Sydney based artists, zin. A single pop song plays on loop into noise cancelling headphones. zin begin to mirror each other’s movements, generating an intimate choreographic language that invites the audience to join in on the action. Equal parts seduction and celebration, Each Other explores the transformative power of pop music and our secret love for tunes that make you want to throw down on the d-floor.

Wall Of Sound Bree van Reyk 23 & 28 – 29 OCT Percussionist Bree van Reyk sits in front of a gong and invites an audience member to join her on the other side of the bronze structure. Wall of Sound is an experiential sound work that places the instrument between two bodies, as divider and conduit – the artist’s hands moving the gong, moving the air, moving into the audience member’s chest and through their bones. Through an immersive and intimate experience, van Reyk gifts each participant a rich tapestry of felt sound.

No Performance Today Lauren Brincat & Bree van Reyk 6 – 7 NOV Brincat and van Reyk will present the next iteration of the acclaimed work No Performance Today, which sees the pair collaborating with the New South Wales Police Band to stage a choreographed sound portrait, moving between the bustling Eveleigh Markets into the cavernous Carriageworks public space. No Performance Today gently unravels the sonic and movement cohesion of the marching band – a regimented, rigid entity – to draw attention to the idiosyncrasies that lie within this collective of individuals.


27 Sean Reid’s OptimaL Trajectory Colin Kinchela 30 OCT – 1 NOV Performer and theatre-maker Colin Kinchela will activate the Carriageworks public space with a time-based performance installation. Audience will be invited onto a fabricated basketball court and encouraged to join Kinchela in shootin’ some hoops with basketballs that carry provocative, political statements. As subversive as it is playful, Kinchela’s work draws on the artist’s own experience as an Indigenous man in a contemporary, urban environment.

Behind your eyes, between your ears – a neurofeedback portrait studio George (Poonkhin) Khut 4 – 7 NOV Explore the dynamics of your attention and create an intimate, luminous video portrait of your brainwaves in acclaimed new media artist, George (Poonkhin) Khut’s latest work. One at a time, audiences step into an interactive studio. Wearing a wireless brainwave sensor, they will quieten their attention to unfold a delicate electronic soundscape, in which different layers of sound are revealed according to the intensity and duration of their alpha brainwave patterns. Behind your eyes, between your ears probes the changing nature of human relationships to biomedical imaging technologies, exploring notions of embodiment, and the role of contemplative practices in contemporary culture.

ACCESSIBILITY Performance Space is striving for equity of access for all performances and events to ensure that everyone can fully participate and enjoy everything Liveworks has to offer.

Unassisted Access Wheelchair access is via the access ramp at the main entrance to Carriageworks, 245 Wilson Street. Accessible carparks are located in the internal Carriageworks carpark.

AUSLAN Interpreted and Audio Described Performances

ACCESSIBLE SEATING Wheelchair bookings can be made for performances in any of the venues within Carriageworks. Patrons are welcome to transfer to a seat or remain in their chair. Performance Space is happy to reserve a space next to this position for up to four companions or friends attending the performance. A number of access seats in each Carriageworks venue.

Accessible Facilities

Accessible seating can be booked via Ticketmaster Customer Services Centre on 136 100 (option 8) between 9am and 9pm, Monday to Saturday and 9am to 5pm Sunday. Outside these hours, requests for accessible seating can be submitted via the Ticketmaster Accessible Tickets button. This button is located on the right hand side of the page of each Carriageworks event listed on the Ticketmaster website.

There is an accessible toilet located next to the public toilets within the Carriageworks complex. Please note that Robot Opera, I might blow up someday and Death of the Pole Dancer are standing performances. Please wear comfortable shoes and do not hesitate to contact us if you have specific access requirements.
