On July 25 to August 2, over 7,000 athletes from over 170 countries with intellectual disabilities came together in Los Angeles to participate in the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. This world sporting event takes place every four years and highlights the athletic ability of these athletes in 21 different Olympictype sporting events. Five Special Olympics athletes and two coaches from Peoria’s Adaptive Recreation Special Olympics program were selected to be on the Special Olympics USA Softball Arizona Team. These athletes represented not only the USA, but Arizona and the City of Peoria. Peoria athlete, Vanessa Robles, was also a featured athlete on an ESPN special that aired prior to the Special Olympics World Games Opening Ceremonies. So proud and excited for our athletes!

Arizona Fall League Returns to Peoria by paul Jensen GeneSiS — Major League Baseball (MLB) created the Arizona Fall League (AFL) in 1992 to serve as an off-season “graduate school” for top prospects. The AFL often is known as a showcase league because its players have the opportunity to display their skills for baseball scouts, general managers and farm directors. For baseball fans, it’s six more weeks of professional baseball featuring many of the game’s elite prospects amid chamber-of-commerce weather in the comfort of modern Valley of the Sun spring training stadiums. arcHitect — Long-time baseball executive, current special assistant to the president of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Phoenix resident Roland Hemond is considered the “Architect of the Fall League.” overSiGHt — MLB owns and operates the AFL. Steve Cobb has been the league’s director since 1993. MLB’s Arizona Fall League oversight committee currently is comprised of four club front office executives — Michael Hill (Marlins), Dayton Moore (Royals), Terry Ryan (Twins) and Mark Shapiro (Indians). roSterS — Each major league organization sends at least seven prospects to the AFL. Five-organization groupings comprise the six AFL teams.

ScHedule — Six AFL teams each play six games per week over a six-week period beginning the second week of October and ending prior to Thanksgiving in state-of-the-art spring training stadiums in the Valley of the Sun. leGacy — Over 3,900 players have appeared in the Arizona Fall League. Nearly 2,300 have reached the big leagues. They have graduated to the major leagues to accomplish the following … 4 3 9 13 10 12 13 16 25 65 75 212

6 Questions in 60 Seconds. That's all it takes to help Peoria! The City of Peoria will conduct a Special Census in our community beginning October 1st. Since the last census in 2010, Peoria’s population has grown immensely. New homes, business, and industries have moved into our community and it is vital that we document this change with certified census counts, so Peoria residents receive their fair share of state funds. Portions of state shared revenue are allocated based on population, making this updated count critical to bring home the tax dollars that belong in our community.
