Welcome to the "Players! Another year, and once again it is my privilege to welcome you to our 83rd season. If you have been a patron in past years, you have probably read my introduction about what it takes to run a theater such as ours / and yours! I have written about the need for continuous improvement in our facilities. I have referred to all the behind scenes activities needed to bring productions to life. I have mentioned the generous support of our sponsors, playbill advertisers and donors, which we cannot do without. In addition to the contributed support, ticket sales from you and your neighbors/friends continue to make up a significant part of our operating revenues. And each year I continue to be awed by what our directors, Greg and Brian, pull out of their collective hats to make another season not only possible, but truly enjoyable on so many fronts. Over the past year we have continued to upgrade various aspects of our campus. I hope you like the rebuilt bridge from the parking area to the upper level of the theater, the additional comfort facilities in Beer Garden restrooms, and we also completed a very necessary upgrade to our kitchen facilities for the company. In addition to all of that, the gardens are better than ever. You should be very proud as it has been your support that has made this all possible. And now we are very excited to explore the idea of building new staff housing. While building can be a significant financial undertaking, we are in an excellent position to consider such a project. I am confident that the Peninsula Players community will help us rise to the challenge. There will be more on this in the coming year as plans are developed and considered. Thank you for all the support you have provided in the past and we look forward to partnering with you as we make future plans. Door County, with its abundance of performing and visual arts, is truly an amazing place to be. We support and encourage all of our colleagues to be the best they can be. A vibrant arts community will benefit us all. With your support, Peninsula Players can continue as one of the artistic crown jewels in the Door County tiara, shining for years to come.

Thank you and enjoy the show!

A warm welcome from Peninsula Players Theatre! We’re delighted that you’re here for our 83rd season! And delighted that we can enhance your visit to Door County in our beautiful venue. With the great variety of entertaining plays we have this season and the natural beauty of our forested setting by the bay, we hope you will have a complete and satisfying experience to take home with you. When I say variety, I mean variety. If you came and saw every show this season, you would walk into a very different world each time you sat down in your seat. A neighborhood Irish bar in the world premiere of Now And Then, where a story of love lost and then regained beautifully and humorously unfolds. The dark streets of 1881 London in Miss Holmes, where Sherlock and Watson have a lot more to deal with than just murder. A tiny old Manhattan apartment in The Drowsy Chaperone, where a lonely guy puts a favorite record on and the stage bursts forth into a smart and silly tap-dancing, 1920’s musical. A glamorous and glorious 1957 penthouse in Living On Love, where a beautiful opera diva and her fiery maestro husband duke it out in a battle of the sexes. A collectibles store crammed to its gills with monster models, movie memorabilia and reams of stuff in Salvage, where romance and mystery blossom and take twists and turns you never, ever expected. And when I say natural beauty is part of your experience, well, we couldn’t get luckier. Here for you is a sweet-smelling cedar forest with a beer garden, trails, shoreline and spectacular sunsets. Mother Nature has blessed us with splendor and infinite variety in her own way for you to enjoy before, during and after the show. And one more thing to add to your experience. As you get ready to enjoy the upcoming performance I wanted to share a little something that has stuck with me recently. Last year University College London conducted research and found that watching a live theatre performance can synchronize your heartbeat with other people in the audience, regardless of if you know them or not. I thought that was remarkable. “The team found that as well as alongside individuals’ emotional responses, the audience members’ hearts were also responding in unison.” That’s amazing - and beautiful. Another layer of experience on top of the others you can take home with you from the Players. So, please enjoy the plays and the performers, enjoy the sunset and the grounds, and especially enjoy the hearts you’re sharing with each other. Have a beautiful evening in the theatre!

Late arrivals. To ensure the enjoyment of our patrons who arrive on time, and in respect to our performers, guests arriving late will not be seated until an appropriate break in the performance. Please note that you will be seated in the back of the house until intermission. At that point, you may move to your assigned seats. This minimizes distraction for other patrons. Lost ticket. Follow the “star lights,” for your respite. Exchanges. Tickets for exchange must be received by the Box Office no later than 24 hours before the performance. Single ticket exchanges are good only for the 2018 season while season ticket exchanges must stay within the same show. In Memory of Ellsworth Peterson … Once a Player, Always a Player Ellsworth Peterson, an iconic shipbuilder and Door County philanthropist, died Wednesday, May 2, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Peterson was Chair of Peterson Builders (PBI) in Sturgeon Bay, which was known globally for building naval and private ships. He was admired and loved by his family, friends and many employees as a role model for his quality of character, integrity and civic dedication. Ellsworth was born in Sturgeon Bay, the son of Fred and Irene Peterson. Continuing his father Martin’s tradition of boatbuilding, Fred started Peterson Boatworks in 1933 and renamed the company in 1946. Ellsworth and his brother Bob started in the family business by cleaning out bilges, and at age 17 he starting working the stockroom. After high school, Ellsworth entered King’s Point Merchant Marine Academy in New York. Ellsworth hoped to continue traveling the world in the Merchant Marine at the close of World War II, but his father needed him home at the shipyard. In 1956, Ellsworth took the helm of the company and spent the next 40 years building on his father’s success, billing the company as “The world’s most versatile shipbuilder,” with a workforce that could handle any job. Ellsworth followed in his father’s footsteps in many ways, including always looking for ways to give back to the community and keeping an open ear for new ideas. While Ellsworth’s name can be found on plaques and buildings throughout the county, there are countless other quiet gifts which have gone unheralded. Led by his father’s charitable example, Ellsworth embraced the ethic of giving back to the community. Carla & Ellsworth Peterson’s generosity continues to impact the entirety of Door County. Carla and Ellsworth provided a $1 million challenge grant to spur fundraising for a capital campaign to rebuild the theater at Peninsula Players. In 2006, future generations of Door County audiences were ensured quality live theater when a new stagehouse, audience pavilion, canteen and scene shop opened. “Peninsula Players is not just a unique entity in Door County,” the Petersons said. “It is unlike any other summer theater in the United States. By protecting this treasure, we are not only preserving local history, but also preserving national history.” Ellsworth is survived by his wife, Carla, and daughter Marsha Kerley. He was preceded in death by his sons Gary Peterson and Brian McKown. Ellsworth will be missed by the entire Peninsula Players family. 24

Peninsula Players A Brief History of the Theatre in a Garden Take a rustic, woodsy site outfitted with a few little cabins that once served a boys’ camp along the bay. Add a dream, a barnlike proscenium stagehouse and a hundred or so seats open to the stars above and you have the early days of Peninsula Players. Richard and Caroline Fisher, a young novice brother-and-sister team, started the troupe in 1935 when they produced Noel Coward’s Hay Fever at a site behind the former Bonnie Brook Cottage/Motel in Fish Creek, now the Fish Creek Town Park.

Peninsula Players, circa 1937

continued their careers in the arts, either on- or off-stage, and some have even gone onto stardom.

By 1937 the Fishers along with their parents (“Mama” who designed and made costumes and fed the company and “Papa,” the general handyman) realized the ensemble had outgrown the motel site so they purchased the 1941, Camille with Margot Fisher and Leo Lucker 22-acre Wildwood Boys Camp, the present site of the theater.

Although Peninsula Players began under the stars, a canvas top was draped above the audience in 1946, and in 1957 Caroline’s dream of a permanent roof came true when the open-sided pavilion was built. In 1960, after 25 years of involvement, the Fishers sold the theater at public auction to Kenneth Carroad, a New York City attorney. Jim McKenzie was hired to oversee the Players’ operations as producer. He and his wife, actress Jeanne Bolan, both associated with the Players since 1947, took on 2008 Born Yesterday with Erica Elam and Kevin McKillip the Fisher legacy.

Now in its 83rd season it is no longer a dream, we are America’s oldest professional resident summer 1953 Affairs of the State with Robert theater. Thompson and Simon Scott

The non-profit organization, Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc., was formed in 1962, to operate the theater, and in 1978 Carroad sold out. McKenzie became owner of the property in 1978 and continued as the Company’s producer.

In the 83 years Peninsula Players has performed in the Theatre in a Garden, more than 1,000 actors have crossed our boards. Some had their first professional experiences at the Players. Many 34

Anticipating significant renovation and repair to the theater pavilion and surrounding support buildings as well as the need for new production and housing facilities, McKenzie decided to sell the place to the Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc. in 1993. As a member of the Players Board of Directors, McKenzie continued to help preserve and improve the theater’s facilities and environment until his death in 2002.

furnish cutting edge theater experiences is still the hallmark at Peninsula Players. Safeguarding that dream and this lovely Theatre in a Garden is paramount to the Players Board of Directors which is committed to – • Preserve America’s oldest professional resident summer theater; • Support the most exciting theater company possible; • Provide freedom, tools and facilities so artists may entertain, uplift and inform audiences; and

2012 Chicago with Jennifer Knox and Erica Mack

More than a decade ago many improvements were made; this included actor housing, and public restroom facilities, expanded and upgraded rehearsal hall and storage areas and a computerized box office. The close of the 2005 season brought the beginning of the Players’ largest improvement – a new stage house and audience pavilion.

• Foster future generations of theater professionals through internships. We hope you enjoy your visit as you explore the theater where the sun sets, the curtain rises and the stars shine.

Through the generous support of many donors, benefactors and volunteers all intent on continuing the magic of live theater for future generations, the Players built a new facility in the exact same footprint of the first theater. In June 2006, the 621-seat audience pavilion opened. Included are up-to-date wiring, more space for actors and scenery a redesigned space to provide better sightlines for the audience, not to mention new comfy seats. PENINSULA PLAYERS AWARDS LOCAL STUDENTS

Peninsula Players Theatre is pleased to announce the inaugural recipients of the Peninsula Players Outstanding Student Award. This award was created by Peninsula Players Theatre and its Board of Directors to recognize and reward graduating high school students across Door County for their achievements in and enthusiasm for the performing arts. “The arts are such a critical part of a student’s overall education as well as personal development,” said Peninsula Players Managing Director, Brian Kelsey. “It is with great pride that we reflect on and reward the great performing arts achievements these four students have exemplified during their high school career. With the great wealth of visual and performing arts organizations that line this diverse peninsula, our communities are perfectly situated to play a critical role in the continued education of our students and adult population. It is so rewarding to see that our schools in Door County still value the arts as part of core learning and embrace STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) instead of simply the common STEM approach seen in far too many schools today.”

The four recipients of the Peninsula Players Outstanding Student Award are from top left Kekoa Bicoy, a recent graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School; Lola Kummer, a recent graduate of Gibraltar High School; bottom left is Alexandra Le Clair, a recent graduate of Sevastopol High School; and Cameron Friehe, a recent graduate of Southern Door High School. Each student has demonstrated a high level of participation and creativity in the arts, including drama, music or chorale, during their academic matriculation.

“We depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity,” said the National Standards for Arts Education. “We value them for themselves, and because we do, we believe knowing and practicing them is fundamental to the healthy development of our children's minds and spirits. That is why, in any civilization - ours included - the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term 'education.' We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts."

Congratulations All! 36

The Play’s the Thing …

The Peninsula Players Winter Play Reading Series

Join the Peninsula Players in the winter months for its eighth season of free public play readings. The Play’s the Thing is part of the Players’ winter outreach programming, presenting professional play readings for the public. In 2018 the Peninsula Players presented Go Save Your Life by Nasir Bin Zakaria, as Pictured are Rom Barkhordar, Demetrios E. Troy and Cheryl Hamada as they perform in a reading of Go Save told to Laura Toffenetti, in conjunction Your Life by Nasir Bin Zakaria, as told to Laura Toffenetti with Door County Reads and its before a capacity crowd at Björklunden in February of 2018. exploration of “The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir” by Kao Kalia Yang. Nasir Bin Zakaria’s harrowing and inspiring story as a Rohingyan refugee from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, opened the three-part play series. The play series also included A Trick of the Light, a new comedy that examines of the ordinariness of the extraordinary and exactly what constitutes a meaningful life, by Minneapolis-based playwright Peter Moore and A Fine Bright Day Today, a warm and gently funny play about love, loss and second chances, British playwright Philip Goulding. The 2018 The Play’s the Thing was funded in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin, as well as generous grants from Door County Medical Center, Friends of Door County Libraries and operating funds from Peninsula Players Theatre. The play reading series provides an opportunity to introduce patrons to new works or to present works which do not quite fit into a season due to challenging production requirements. The readings also provide an opportunity for audience feedback. The overwhelmingly positive response to the readings of Miss Holmes by Christopher M. Walsh and Salvage by Joseph Zettelmaier in 2017 encouraged Artistic Director Greg Vinkler to produce them as full-stage productions this season. To learn more about the forthcoming 2019 winter play readings, sign-up for E-news on www.peninsulaplayers.com, then log into your online ticket account and register for an email notification under “Yes! I am interested in Winter Play Readings.” You can also keep an eye on the Community Programing section of the Peninsula Players website for forthcoming information on the readings February 4, March 4 and April 1, 2019. 67

Peninsula Players Internship Program Theater is one of the few professions where apprentices can learn from those who practice their art. The internship program at Peninsula Players Theatre is part of a tradition which runs as deep as the roots of the theater itself. Since the Peninsula Players launched its first season in 1935, interns, then called apprentices, have been given the opportunity to work side-by-side with professionals, learning the craft by observing and participating in it. Working in theater necessitates honing very well-rounded skills. Gaining experience in a professional setting, such as the Peninsula Players, develops communication skills, provides hands-on training and builds networking opportunities with working professionals. Participants in the internship program work with the theater’s professional actors, managers and technicians for 14 to 20 weeks in all facets of theater, from backstage to front office, making the Peninsula Players Internship Program unique among theater programs. The program provides participants a chance to explore many aspects of theater production. As each show opens, the intern’s daytime and evening assignments rotate, thus creating a constant path of growth throughout the season. The program’s diversity and atmosphere attracts applicants from across the country. Mixing work and responsibilities, interns are offered opportunities to enhance their résumés, try different areas in theater production and make contacts with working actors, designers and managers. Interns participating in our 2018 season came from a variety of academic programs in Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Wyoming and Wisconsin. For information about our internship program, phone the Box Office at (920) 868-3287 or visit our website www.peninsulaplayers.com for an application for the 2019 season.

Join the Post-Show Discussions at Peninsula Players The Players will host post-show discussions after select performances in 2018. Audiences are invited to stay after the shows and chat with the actors, designers and directors. Please watch the Players website for pre-show seminar dates. Post show discussions are scheduled on: Thursday, June 14 - Now and Then Tuesday, July 10 – Miss Holmes Wednesday, August 1 – The Drowsy Chaperone Friday, August 24 – Living on Love Saturday, September 8 – Salvage For tickets to these performances visit www.peninsulaplayers.com or phone the box office at (920) 868-3287 69

OUR 2018 SEASON June 12 – July 1 NOW AND THEN

The world première of a magical comedy-drama by Sean Grennan. Jamie, an aspiring pianist, is ready to close the bar and meet Abby, his girlfriend. Unexpectedly, an amiable older gentleman, who seems to know the place very well, enters and a friendly conversation ensues. Abby joins them and soon the gentleman offers them each $1,000 to stay, sit and talk with him for one hour. With reluctance they agree, and then hear an incredible story that changes their lives. A surprising and funny fable about what it means to really love someone.

July 4 – July 22

MISS HOLMES

A riveting murder mystery by Christopher M. Walsh. Based on characters by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In this deadly and thrilling story, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are brave, intelligent and independent women in Victorian England. Neither abides by the social class conventions of their time - to their peril. Instead, they pursue helping those in desperate need. Trapped in an era that refuses to accept them, these unconventional professionals help a young wife whose husband, a corrupt high-ranking Scotland Yard investigator, is suspected of murdering his previous two wives.

July 25 – Aug 12 THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

Music & Lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. Book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar. A delightfully smart and funny musical with show-stopping song and dance numbers. As a rare recording plays, a musical theater fan’s sparse apartment transforms into a glittering Broadway set. Transported into the bubbly musical, we meet a young couple in love, a harried best man, a Broadway impresario, an absent-minded dowager, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a ditzy chorus girl, a very misguided Don Juan and a tipsy chaperone. Sit back and enjoy this entertaining fictional gem from musical theater’s Golden Age.
