Welcome to the "Players!” Once again, it is my privilege on behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire Players’ company to welcome you to our 82nd season. Our directors, Greg and Brian, have arranged for another exciting season of live theater here in beautiful Door County. Selecting and obtaining rights to the productions, casting the plays with outstanding actors, assembling the behind the scenes professional staff, interviewing and selecting a new crop of interns all happens months before the curtain rises. Readying the campus for you, our patrons, after a long winter’s rest is just another task that gives urgency to and raises the anticipation for another season of performances. Over the past several years we have had many positives that encourage us to continue the heritage and legacy that the past 81 years have provided. Our increasing ticket sales is an indication that we are producing plays our audiences enjoy. The new director’s chairs provide a more enjoyable experience in the Beer Garden before the show and during intermission. Our building and grounds are looking their best, even though we know continuous improvements need to be addressed. And sunsets across Green Bay never go out of style. We have been blessed to have the support of you, our patrons, and all the financial support we receive from donors, show sponsors, and Playbill advertisers. We are encouraged by the establishment of our endowment fund held and managed by the Door County Community Foundation. And many have heard the clarion call with the closing of the theater’s Capital Campaign Fund this past April, making final contributions and increasing our ability to further reduce our long term indebtedness to a more manageable level. Thank you! A night at Peninsula Players is not just “more drama” but a blend of community, nature, art and entertainment. I encourage you to tell your friends and family to experience it for themselves. And with your continuing support, you play a role in keeping one of Door County’s artistic crown jewels shining for years to come.

Enjoy the show!

Hi and welcome to our 82nd season! I hope you’re enjoying your Players experience. If you got to see a sunset - great! But I think the view out over Green Bay is beautiful anytime - that wide open expanse of sky and water always does my heart good. As does the smell of these wonderful cedars. I hope you got to, or will, enjoy the bonfire in the Beer Garden or any of the trails you might have found, some of which are brand new this year! Nature is an amazing lobby for our theater and hard to even attempt to compete with. But, we really try to make sure that the Players experience is just as rewarding on our end of things. You come first here. We do our best to make your experience as friendly and safe as possible. Good service is very important to both Brian and me - from that parking lot introduction on to your interactions with all of our company in the box office, canteen, bar and playhouse. But, the show you are about to enjoy is the core of the Players experience. It is the main reason you’re here and the ultimate focus of our company. All our energies hone in on what will happen on that stage, and our goal - our passion - is to fill it with the best possible energy and talent we can. Months of planning, meeting, designing and preparation have gone into what you are about to see when the lights dim to start the show. Our goal is to make it all look effortless and magical, and to attain the highest level of artistry possible. All together, that is the Players experience we hope you have - inside and outside. And, we hope you will be drawn to return - for the next show or our next season. And the wide variety of stories we’re presenting this year - the romantic comedy-drama of The Actuary, the magical hilarity of Peter and the Starcatcher, the musical romance of The Bridges Of Madison County, the delightful silliness of Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, the heartwarming feeling of Almost, Maine - will continue on into future seasons of Players productions. Along with the natural beauty of our surroundings, that will always be the Players experience. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Enjoy Your Visit to Peninsula Players Seating. The grounds, canteen and Beer Garden are open 90 minutes before curtain. Seating in the theater begins 30 minutes prior to each performance. Late arrivals. To ensure the enjoyment of our patrons who arrive on time, and in respect to our performers, guests arriving late will not be seated until an appropriate break in the performance. Please note that you will be seated in the back of the house until intermission. At that point, you may move up to your assigned seats. This creates less of a distraction for other patrons. Lost ticket. If you have lost your tickets, please visit the Box Office or call (920) 868-3287 before your performance date. Re-entry during performance. If you must leave during the performance, please do so quietly through the rear house doors. Re-entry while the performance is in progress is at the discretion of the House Manager. Restrooms. Restrooms are located north of the theater near the lower parking lot. As you exit the audience pavilion on the Beer Garden side, follow the foot path past the Canteen to the next building beyond. Follow the “star lights,” for your respite. Exchanges. Tickets for exchange must be received by the Box Office no later than 24 hours before the performance. Single ticket exchanges are good only for the 2017 season while season ticket exchanges must stay within the same show. Tickets may be exchanged for tickets of comparable or greater value, provided the additional value is paid. A $1 per ticket exchange fee will be assessed (waived for season ticket holders). All exchanged tickets must be received by the Box Office before new tickets are issued. Exchanges are not available on group orders. 6

BRIAN KELSEY Managing Director

Brian celebrates his 10th season as the Peninsula Players Managing Director. He comes to the Players with a broad range of “for profit” and “not for profit” business experience, gained both in the United States and Europe, in the fields of operations, finance, marketing and public relations. Brian is engaged in the arts and tourism industries and serves on the board of the Peninsula Arts and Humanities Alliance (president), Theatre Wisconsin (president) and was appointed by the Governor to the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Wisconsin Governor’s Council on Tourism (vice chair). A graduate of Marquette University with a degree in journalism, Brian is pleased to share his business experience in the community that raised him. As a side note, he is even more pleased to be working for the organization that gave him his first performing arts experience as a child.

All sales are final; there are no refunds. Returned tickets may qualify as a tax-deductible donation if received by the Box Office at least 30 minutes prior to show time. Children. At Peninsula Players we generally follow the school-age and up rule. One or two of our shows have adult themes that may be inappropriate for young children. In general, we suggest ages seven and over for attention span purposes. Everybody attending a performance must purchase a seat. Babes in arms will not be allowed in the theater. For further information regarding age-appropriateness of any of our shows, contact the Box Office at (920) 868-3287 or visit the play pages at www.peninsulaplayers.com. To purchase tickets for wheelchair or limited access seating, call the Box Office at (920) 868-3287. We are better able to handle special needs in person or over the phone. We require that you attest to your need for any seats set aside for ADA by agreeing to terms and conditions. Assisted listening devices are available at the canteen for the hearing impaired. A driver’s license or credit card is requested as a security deposit for the use of these devices.

Peninsula Players A Brief History of the Theatre in a Garden Take a rustic, woodsy site outfitted with a few little cabins that once served a boys camp along the bay. Add a dream, a barnlike proscenium stagehouse and a hundred or so seats open to the stars above and you have the early days of Peninsula Players. Richard and Caroline Fisher, a young novice brother-and-sister team, started the troupe in 1935 when they produced Noel Coward’s Hay Fever at a site behind the former Bonnie Brook Cottage/Motel in Fish Creek, now the Fish Creek Town Park.

Peninsula Players, circa 1937

continued their careers in the arts, either on- or off-stage, and some have even gone onto stardom.

By 1937 the Fishers along with their parents (“Mama” who designed and made costumes and fed the company and “Papa,” the general handyman) realized the 1939 The Circle with Jacqueline ensemble had Wells (Julie Bishop) and Marden McBroom (David Bruce). outgrown the motel site so they purchased the 22-acre Wildwood Boys Camp, the present site of the theater.

Although Peninsula Players began under the stars, a canvas top was draped above the audience in 1946, and in 1957 Caroline’s dream of a permanent roof came true when the open-sided pavilion was built. In 1960, after 25 years of involvement, the Fishers sold the theater at public auction to Kenneth Carroad, a New York City attorney. Jim McKenzie was hired to oversee the Players’ operations as producer. He and his wife, actress J e a n n e Bolan, both associated with the Players since 1947, took on 1995 You Can’t Take It with You with Howard Platt, Sharon Carlson and Guy Barile. the Fisher legacy.

Anticipating significant renovation and repair to the theater pavilion and surrounding support buildings as well as the need for new production and housing facilities, McKenzie decided to sell the place to the Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc. in 1993. As a member of the Players Board of Directors, McKenzie continued to help preserve and improve the theater’s facilities and environment until his death in 2002.

• Preserve America’s oldest professional resident summer theatre; • Support the most exciting theatre company possible; • Provide freedom, tools, and facilities so artists may entertain, uplift and inform audiences; and

More than a decade ago many improvements were made, including actor housing and public restroom facilities, expanded and upgraded rehearsal and storage areas and a computerized box office. The close of the 2005 season brought the beginning of the Players’ largest improvement – a new stage house and audience pavilion.

• Foster future generations of theater professionals through internships. hope We you enjoy your visit as you explore the theater where the sun sets, the curtain rises and the stars shine.

Through the generous support of many donors, benefactors and volunteers all intent on continuing the magic of live theater for future generations, the Players built a new facility in the exact same foot-print of the first theater. In June 2006, the 621-seat audience pavilion opened. Included are up-to-date wiring, more space for actors and scenery and a redesigned space to provide better sightlines for the audience, not to mention new comfy seats.

The Play’s the Thing …

The Peninsula Players Winter Play Reading Series

Join the Peninsula Players in the winter months for its seventh season of free public play readings. The Play’s the Thing is part of the Players’ winter outreach programming, presenting professional play readings for the public. In 2017 the Peninsula Players presented Population 485 by Michael Perry in conjunction with Door County Reads and its exploration of are McKinley Carter, Cassandra Bissell and the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “Empire Falls” Pictured Maggie Kettering as they perform in a reading of Miss by Richard Russo. Population 485 is newly Holmes by Christopher M. Walsh before a capacity crowd at adapted by Perry from his book “Population: Björklunden in April of 2017. 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time.” Also presented was Salvage by Joseph Zettelmaier, a romantic-comedy-mystery-drama set in a collectible shop in contemporary Detroit and Miss Holmes by Christopher M. Walsh, which offers audiences a twist on the Holmesian legend as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are female. The 2017 Play’s the Thing was funded in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin, as well as generous grants from the Door County Community Foundation, Door County Medical Center and Friends of Door County Libraries and operating funds from Peninsula Players Theatre. The play reading series provides an opportunity to introduce patrons to new works or to present works which do not quite fit into a season due to challenging production requirements. The readings also provide an opportunity for audience feedback. The overwhelmingly positive response to the readings of Chapatti by Christian O’Reilly and Butler by Richard Strand encouraged Artistic Director Greg Vinkler to produce them as full-stage productions. To learn more about the forthcoming 2018 winter play readings, sign-up for E-news on www.peninsulaplayers.com then log into your online ticket account and register for an email notification under “Yes! I am interested in Winter Play Readings.” You can also keep an eye on the Community Programing section of the Peninsula Players website for forthcoming information on the readings February 5, March 5 and April 2, 2018.

Peninsula Players Internship Program Theater is one of the few professions where apprentices can learn from those who practice their art. The internship program at Peninsula Players Theatre is part of a tradition which runs as deep as the roots of the theater itself. Since the Peninsula Players launched its first season in 1935, interns, then called apprentices, have been given the opportunity to work sideby-side with professionals, learning the craft by observing and participating in it. Working in theater necessitates honing very well-rounded skills. Gaining experience in a professional setting, such as the Peninsula Players, develops communication skills, provides hands-on training and builds networking opportunities with working professionals. Participants in the internship program work with the theater’s professional actors, managers and technicians for 14 to 20 weeks in all facets of theater, from backstage to front office, making the Peninsula Players internship program unique among theater programs. The program provides participants a chance to explore many aspects of theater production. As each show opens, the intern’s daytime and evening assignments rotate, thus creating a constant path of growth throughout the season. The program’s diversity and atmosphere attracts applicants from across the country. Mixing work and responsibilities, interns are offered opportunities to enhance their résumés, try different areas in theater production and make contacts with working actors, designers and managers. Interns participating in our 2017 season come from a variety of academic programs in Colorado, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, Utah and Wisconsin. For information about our internship program, phone the Box Office at (920) 868-3287 or visit our website www.peninsulaplayers.com for an application for the 2018 season.

Join the Post-Show Discussions at Peninsula Players The Players will host pre-show seminars and post-show discussions after certain performances in 2017. Audiences are invited to arrive early for special seminars on topics related to the shows or to stay after the shows and chat with the actors, designers and directors. Please watch the Players website for pre-show seminar dates. Post show discussions are set for: Friday, June 16 for The Actuary Tuesday, July 11 for Peter and the Starcatcher Thursday, Aug. 3 for The Bridges of Madison County Wednesday, Aug. 23 for Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime Saturday, Sept. 9 for Almost, Maine For tickets to these performances visit www.peninsulaplayers.com or phone the box office at (920) 868-3287 63

This is her fourth season at Peninsula Players where she was an intern in 2014 and Production Assistant in 2015. Flagstone Staircase – A Historical Magical Gateway

You may have descended this historic flagstone staircase or by the new footpath in the far garden south of the theater this evening to join the Players. We hope you arrived early to enjoy the beautiful gardens and grounds. Since 1937 the flagstone staircase has been a gateway for generations of theatergoers. At first, patrons descended into an open grassy knoll and they sat on garden chairs to be enchanted by Flagstone staircase 1937. performances under the stars. The staircase was the original entrance to Camp Wildwood for Boys, which occupied the property prior to 1937 when the Players moved in. In the 1920s, Door County boomed with summer camps for girls and boys including Camp Wildwood. Boys from all over the country graced the Juddville/Fish Creek area and would descend the flagstone staircase anticipating their summer adventures. Girls from Wildwood’s sister camp, Camp Meenahga in Peninsula State Park, would visit the boys camp and use the grand staircase. Many memories were made on the Camp Wildwood/Peninsula Players properties and continue to evoke memories in patrons today. The stairs, canopied by cedar trees and stained-glass star lights, were an iconic, nostalgic and functional element of the Peninsula Players experience. Some ventured down those stairs for the first time tonight while others recall their first descent. Many were heartbroken when the stairs were unexpectedly lost during the demolition, excavation and construction of the new theater in 2006. The upper portion survived but remained roped off, unable to be safely used by patrons until the 2015 season. Peninsula Players, with support from the Raibrook Foundation, was able to rebuild a portion of the Players past. We are thrilled, once again, to greet patrons “under the stars” The flagstone staircase today. via this magical entryway to the theater-in-agarden for generations to come. 65

Go Behind the Footlights at Peninsula Players Since 1935, Peninsula Players has entertained and delighted Door County audiences. In this walking tour, patrons see for themselves the work environment, from production to a bird’s eye view of the stage from the tech gallery.
