Dear Friends, It is my honor on behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire Peninsula Players Theatre company to wish you a warm welcome to our 87th season. Our stage will once again be filled with talent, light, and Ourlaughter.amazing staff has worked tirelessly on making this season possible. Our Managing Director, Brian Kelsey, continues to expertly manage a broad range of duties that make our theater top-notch. Brian wears many hats, and he wears them well. In her first season as Artistic Director, Linda Fortunato has assembled an exciting variety of shows that are sure to please. Linda has transitioned seamlessly into her new role and has quickly become a valued member of our Peninsula Players’ family. We also welcome former Artistic Director Greg Vinkler back to our stage in his acting role in The Rainmaker and his directing role in Write Me A Murder. “Once A Player, Always A Player” rings true once again! We are enthusiastically launching our “Act II” capital campaign to fulfill our dire need for new company housing. Adequate housing for our staff is a critical issue that is long past needing to be addressed. The time is right for us now to pursue this essential improvement and we are looking forward to partnering with all of you to meet this challenge. Let’s make this happen! We are blessed and grateful to have the generous support of our donors, sponsors, patrons, playbill advertisers and volunteers. We could not do it without all of you. A heartfelt thank you for your past and continued support of this magical place we call Peninsula Players Theatre. Enjoy the show! Jill Herlache, Peninsula Players Theatre Board President Welcome PeninsulatoPlayers Theatre!

I believe the most special thing about Peninsula Players Theatre is community. This means many things to me, including the vibrant arts community in Door County and all those who support us, as well as the exceptional community formed by our company as we live, eat, work and play together daily. But perhaps the most important is the community we form with you, our audience, each evening as you arrive on property to enjoy the grounds, the sunsets, the paths, the bonfire, and ultimately when we dim the lights and invite you to join us in the worlds of the stories we tell. From the hot and dusty drought of The Rainmaker, the mysterious English estate of Write Me a Murder, the eccentric retirement facility of Ripcord, the homebound teen’s bedroom in I and You, and all the way to the scene of the crime in Murder for Two – these worlds are only complete when we share them with you. Thank you for being with us. Here’s to a wonderful season back in our home down by the bay. Whether this is your first visit or your fifty-first, I am so happy you have joined us and hope you will return again and again.

Hello friends, Welcome to Peninsula Players Theatre’s 87th season. After 17 previous seasons with the company in many different positions, I am thrilled to be welcoming you now in my first season as artistic director. It is an honor to be entrusted with carrying on the legacy of this incredible theater. 2022 finds us back with our first full season since 2019, and we could not have done it without your support. This is a time to celebrate, to reconnect, and to embrace the new while honoring the history and traditions that have made this such a unique and wonderful place.

We aspire to foster a company that practices joy, humor, kindness, compassion, honesty, respect, dedication, inclusiveness, and love. One which also understands the value of a strong work ethic, ongoing professional development, as well as the value of being a member of a social and supportive campus community.

We commit ourselves to produce a wide variety of programming that remains faithful to the intentions of the theater’s founders. In addition to providing the joy of entertainment for its own sake and bringing established stories to light, we also work to produce well-known stories and new works that take an artistic risk, reflect the complexity of our shared humanity, explore social commentary, feed the soul, foster civic dialogue and fuel the curiosity of our community at large. We pledge to be a supportive and responsible member of the Door County community and an advocate for the larger arts community. We are determined to expand public awareness of the essential contributions the arts make to society as a whole. We prioritize the health (mental & physical) and safety of our company members, donors, patrons and volunteers and dedicate ourselves to providing a safe and secure environment for all. We believe in the intrinsic value of life-long learning which creates an environment of continued professional and personal growth.

Peninsula Players Theatre would like to acknowledge that the land on which we gather was nurtured for thousands of years before our residence in 1937. These peoples include the former Wildwood Camp for Boys, the Potawatomi Nation and other influential peoples/nations, including the Huron, Menominee, Ojibwe, Ottawa, Petun, Sauk and the Winnebago (or Ho-Chunk).

Values of Peninsula Players Theatre

We strive for excellence in all we do – endeavoring to present our patrons with the highest quality professional theater while ensuring their visit is as welcoming and positive as possible. We celebrate equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion. We value the right to be who you are and embrace differences, which makes us whole as a community. Diversity encompasses aesthetics, age, class, disability, ethnicity, gender, geography, economic status, faith, race, sexual orientation and varying points of view.

Recognition of Prior Stewardship

We cherish and value the tranquility and splendor of the forest and water which surrounds our artistic home and commit ourselves to environmental sustainability. We revere the rich legacy of Peninsula Players Theatre and embrace the great responsibility of ensuring it remains a stable business by using sound financial practices and accountability that will protect the theater for future generations.

We mentor the next generation of theater practitioners through our internship program, by way of advice, teaching, listening, example and help in making their way into the professional world, and through supporting secondary education in the arts through our scholarship program.

In I and You, Gunderson juxtaposes Whitman’s poetic semantics with the dialogue between the high school basketball star and his chronically ill classmate. Gunderson is particularly fond of how Whitman’s language contrasts with the language of youth today. “Whitman’s free verse is beautiful, but it doesn’t sound like dialogue,” she said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to contrast this youthful language with Whitman’s grand lyrical verse.” Gunderson’s work has been commissioned, produced and developed at companies across the US, including the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (The Book of Will ), South Coast Repertory (Emilie, Silent Sky), The Kennedy Center (The Amazing Adventures of Dr. Wonderful and Her Dog! ), Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Shotgun Players, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, Crowded Fire Theater, San Francisco Playhouse, Marin Theatre Company, Synchronicity, Olney Theatre Center, Geva Theatre Center and more. Her work is published by Dramatists Play Service (Silent Sky, Bauer ), Playscripts (I and You; Exit, Pursued by a Bear; and Toil and Trouble), and Samuel French (Emilie). She received a Sloan Science Script Award (2008) for her screenplay “Grand Unification.” Leap, featuring a young Isaac Newton, was published with Theatre Emory’s Playwriting Center (2004), and her first collection of plays, Deepen The Mystery: Science and the South Onstage, is published with iUniverse (2006). Her short story, “The Ascending Life,” won the Norembega Short Fiction Award and was published in the anthology, The Shape of Content. Her string theory poem “Hook of a Number” was published in the anthology Riffing On Strings, and her monologue “Mass” was published in The Science Creative Quarterly 2015. She is a Playwright in Residence at The Playwrights Foundation and a proud Dramatists Guild member. She is from Atlanta, Georgia, lives in San Francisco and writes for The Huffington Post and The Wall Street Journal. To learn more, visit LaurenGunderson.com and @LalaTellsAStory. “I’m a fan of catharsis,” Gunderson said. “I hope a community conversation happens; I think there’s lots to talk about in this play. This oneness, the sense of connectivity, appreciation for great surprise, and really how we are all in this together.”

LAUREN PlaywrightGUNDERSON–

I and You American Theatre magazine recognized Lauren Gunderson as the most produced living playwright in America in 2017 and 2019. She is the winner of the Lanford Wilson Award, the Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award and a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. She received the John Gassner Award for Playwriting and a three-year residency with Marin Theatre Company from the Mellon Foundation. She studied Southern Literature and Drama at Emory University and Dramatic Writing at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she was a Reynolds Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship.

In 2013, I and You, which centers around two teenagers working on a school project about Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass,” made its debut and, in 2014, was awarded the Steinberg Award. “Whitman was the poet I resonated with the most in high school because of his philosophy,” Gunderson said in an interview. “But mostly, it was because of the rebelliousness I could hear in the language. It’s so wild and unleashed. As a kid, that’s what I wanted art to be. It was quite profound to me at that time.”

Behind the Scenes of I and You Months before rehearsals begin, the design team and director collaborate on the overall aesthetics of a production. Caroline's bedroom and world is reflected in these renderings by Costume Designer Kyle Pingel and set model by Scenic Designer Jack Magaw. Caroline and Anthony are assigned a group project based on Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass." The title is a pun, as grass was a term given by publishers to works of minor value, and leaves is another name for the pages on which they were printed. In 1855, the first edition was published in Brooklyn at the printing shop of two Scottish immigrants, James and Andrew Rome, whom Whitman had known since the 1840s.

Take a rustic, woodsy site outfitted with a few little cabins that once served a boys’ camp along the bay. Add a dream, a barnlike proscenium stagehouse and a hundred or so seats open to the stars above and you have the early days of Peninsula Players.

Richard and Caroline Fisher, a young novice brother-and-sister team, started the troupe in 1935 when they produced Noel Coward’s Hay Fever at a site behind the former Bonnie Brook Cottage/Motel in Fish Creek, now the Fish Creek Town Park. By 1937 the Fishers along with their parents (“Mama” who designed and made costumes and fed the company and “Papa,” the general handyman) realized the ensemble had outgrown the motel site so they purchased the 22-acre Wildwood Boys Camp, the present site of the Nowtheater.in its 87th season it is no longer a dream, we are America’s oldest theater.residentprofessionalsummer In the 87 years Peninsula Players has performed in the Theatre in a Garden, more than 1,000 actors have crossed our boards. Some had their first professional experiences at the Players. Many continued their careers in the arts, either on- or off-stage, and some have even gone onto stardom. Although Peninsula Players began under the stars, a canvas top was draped above the audience in 1946, and in 1957 Caroline’s dream of a permanent roof came true when the open-sided pavilion was built. In 1960, after 25 years of involvement, the Fishers sold the theater at public auction to Kenneth Carroad, a New York City attorney. Jim McKenzie was hired to oversee the Bolan, actressandproducer.operationsPlayers’asHehiswife,JeannebothassociatedwiththePlayerssince 1947, took on the Fisher legacy.

The non-profit organization, Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc., was formed in 1962, to operate the theater, and in 1978 Carroad sold out. McKenzie became owner of the property in 1978 and continued as the Company’s producer.

Peninsula Players A Brief History of the Theatre in a Garden Peninsula Players, circa 1937 2008 Born Yesterday with Erica Elam and Kevin McKillip 1953 Affairs of the State with Robert Thompson and Simon Scott 1941, Camille with Margot Fisher and Leo Lucker

More than a decade ago many improvements were made; this included actor housing, public restroom facilities, expanded and upgraded rehearsal hall and storage areas and a computerized box office. The close of the 2005 season brought the beginning of the Players’ largest improvement – a new stage house and audience pavilion. Through the generous support of many donors, benefactors and volunteers all intent on continuing the magic of live theater for future generations, the Players built a new facility in the exact same footprint of the first theater. In June 2006, the 621-seat audience pavilion opened. Included are up-to-date wiring, more space for actors and scenery a redesigned space to provide better sightlines for the audience, not to mention new comfy seats. The passion that Richard and Caroline shared to stretch their imaginations, provide reason for laughter and tears and furnish cutting edge theater experiences is still the hallmark at Peninsula Players.

Anticipating significant renovation and repair to the theater pavilion and surrounding support buildings as well as the need for new production and housing facilities, McKenzie decided to sell the place to the Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc. in 1993. As a member of the Players Board of Directors, McKenzie continued to help preserve and improve the theater’s facilities and environment until his death in 2002.

The Play's the Thing is part of our community outreach programming, presenting free professional play readings for the public in February, March and April. Our desire to stay connected to patrons, wherever they may be, led us to expand the program to include virtual audio recordings in addition to in-person events. We opened our 12th year of the threepart play series with the virtual reading of Kodachrome by Adam Szymkowicz, in coordination with Door County Reads and its exploration of "Population 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time" and "Truck: A Love Story" by Michael Perry. In April and March, we were able to host both in- person and virtual performances. April’s reading featured Kristine Thatcher’s A Safe House, followed by Sean Grennan’s A Rock Sails By in March.

ANNI & DEB LAMPERT Head Chefs Once upon a time, Mrs. Lampert had a beautiful daughter, then another (then another, but that’s a story for another day). One decided she was the queen and the other decided to be a princess. Now they run our kitchen and feed us all summer. God save the queen and the princess, too. You may know them as Deb Lampert and Anni Lampert. They live in a small castle in Sturgeon Bay, where they exercise active imaginations, but rarely caution.
