IN MEMORY OF HELOISE RATHBONE Beloved Company Member (May 19, 1942 – January 28, 2023)

Heloise was the eldest daughter of Rodion and Caroline Fisher Rathbone, who owned and operated the theater until 1960. While Caroline operated the theater, Rodion flew to and from Rome or Paris as a TWA pilot. Heloise attended school in Fish Creek when her parents were in Door County and took piano lessons with Mrs. Uno Nyman at Silver Poplar in Ellison Bay. Heloise performed in a few shows, including Happy Times and Teahouse of the August Moon with Harvey Korman. But the stage was not her calling; Heloise was drawn to music. She attended Kenosha’s Kemper Hall, was a member of the Junior Schubert Club while attending, gave recitals at Silver Poplar and Kemper, and continued to play piano throughout her life.

In 1959, at the age of 17, Heloise was called upon to step in for her ill mother and run the theater. With grit and determination, she arrived with her younger brother via the bus from Chicago to break into locked buildings and open the theater with $72.16 she found in change in a coffee can. In adulthood, Heloise settled into a quiet life of teaching in Brooklyn, and, in 1987, helped found a soup kitchen for the less fortunate in her neighborhood. In 2008, she spoke to The Baker Street Irregulars Trust’s dinner celebrating Sherlock Holmes’s 154th birthday about her grandfather Basil Rathbone and what it was like to be part of the Rathbone family. A few years ago, she retired from teaching at Grace Church School, the oldest preschool in Brooklyn. Heloise quietly passed away earlier this year in California, and we extend our deepest condolences to her daughter Dounia and the entire family. She was preceded in death by her parents Caroline, in 1985, and Rodion, in 1996. Heloise is survived by her siblings Grace (Dounia) Clearsen and Richard Rodion Rathbone.
