Welcome to the "Players!” It is another year, and once again it is an honor and privilege to welcome you to our 84th season. Experiencing live theater can and should be invigorating on many levels, whether making us laugh, cry, or feel other or even new emotions. Every now and then, you may hear from “professional consultants” that live performances are financially doomed because they cannot be replicated in a cost efficient manner. Yet arts organizations continue to thrive. Why? Maybe because we do not give standing ovations to film or electronic versions, no matter how entertaining they may be. And each year, Greg and Brian seek to give us all another season of great theater. We have been busy during our quiet period in improving and building amenities for you, our patrons, and for our actors, professional theater staff and interns who all live on campus during our season. Seasonal housing continues to be a challenge for all organizations in Door County. Given the condition of much of our decades-old housing, we continue to explore building new staff housing. I mentioned this in last year’s letter, and progress has been made. But we need to act prudently and consider available options to assure ultimate success. So for now, all I can say is “stay tuned.” Peninsula Players has been fortunate to have the support of many, whether through attendance at performances, being a sponsor or playbill advertiser, or contributing to our Annual Fund drive. Even a kind word now and again is inspiring. This support is the life blood of all performing arts organizations, and your dedication has meant and will continue to mean the world to all of us at the Players. Door County is fortunate to have an abundance of exceptional performing and visual arts organizations, making our community a truly amazing place to be. We encourage all of our artistic colleagues to be the best they can be giving us a vibrant arts community for all to enjoy. And with your continuing support, Peninsula Players will surely be one of the crown jewels in the Door County’s artistic tiara.

Welcome to the 84th season of Peninsula Players’ entertaining shows, crackling bonfires and gorgeous sunsets! The warmest of welcomes to all of you new faces who are experiencing the Players for the first time - we truly hope you enjoy your stay with us! And the heartiest of welcomes to old Players - to you returning friends who have relished the Peninsula Players experience, some of you for many decades! We are very happy you are and continue making us part of your Door County adventure. I am delighted with the variety of shows we’re presenting this season, from the world premiere of A Trick Of The Light, a comedy about a man who finds he has the ability to make himself invisible (and what does he do with that?!) to a classic Agatha Christie in which the inimitable Miss Marple, with much danger to herself, discovers why A Murder Is Announced. From there we rocket into the rambunctious world of Ghost The Musical, a romantic fantasy thriller based on the iconic 1990 film, and then we travel to 1898 Harvard for the beautiful Silent Sky, where a troupe of intrepid lady astronomers bravely change the course of science. Lastly, we snagged the Midwest première of George Washington’s Teeth, a madcap comedy that is, shall we say, somewhat historical. It’s a lineup I’m especially fond of for lots of reasons, one of which I didn’t realize till after I’d put the season together. And that’s the fact that, I think probably for the first time since I started at the Players in 1988, the number of women’s roles outnumber the men’s two-to-one! Nice to see the tables turned for a change! I love all these shows and hope you will have a terrific time with them as you enjoy the whole experience here at Peninsula Players Theatre! BRIAN KELSEY Managing Director

Brian celebrates his 12th season as the Peninsula Players Managing Director. He comes to the Players with a broad range of “for profit” and “not for profit” business experience, gained both in the United States and Europe, in the fields of operations, finance, marketing and public relations. Brian is engaged in the arts and tourism industries and serves on the board of the Peninsula Arts and Humanities Alliance (president), Theatre Wisconsin (president) and was appointed by the Governor to the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Wisconsin Governor’s Council on Tourism (vice chair). A graduate of Marquette University with a degree in journalism, Brian is pleased to share his business experience in the community that raised him. As a side note, he is even more pleased to be working for the organization that gave him his first performing arts experience as a child.

Enjoy Your Visit to Peninsula Players Seating. The grounds, canteen and Beer Garden are open 90 minutes before curtain. Seating in the theater begins 30 minutes prior to each performance. Late arrivals. To ensure the enjoyment of our patrons who arrive on time, and in respect to our performers, guests arriving late will not be seated until an appropriate break in the performance. Please note that you will be seated in the back of the house until intermission. At that point, you may move to your assigned seats. This minimizes distraction for other patrons. Lost ticket. If you have lost your tickets, please visit the Box Office or call (920) 868-3287 before your performance date. Re-entry during performance. If you must leave during the performance, please do so quietly through the rear house doors. Re-entry while the performance is in progress is at the discretion of the House Manager. Restrooms. Restrooms are located north of the theater near the lower parking lot. As you exit the audience pavilion on the Beer Garden side, follow the foot path past the canteen to the next building beyond. Follow the “star lights” for your respite. Exchanges. Tickets for exchange must be received by the Box Office no later than 24 hours before the performance. Single ticket exchanges are good only for the 2019 season while season ticket exchanges must stay within the same show. Tickets may be exchanged for tickets of comparable or greater value, provided the additional value is paid. A $1 per ticket exchange fee will be assessed (waived for season ticket holders). All exchanged tickets must be received by the Box Office before new tickets are issued. Exchanges are not available on group orders. 6

Greg is delighted to have played a part in the Peninsula Players’ wonderful history for 31 years. Besides putting the seasons together, as well as the winter play reading series, he has directed 32 productions (including Chicago, Lombardi and The Full Monty) and performed in 51 shows. For his work with the Peninsula Players, he was honored with the inaugural Door County Artist of the Year Award. Greg has performed extensively in Chicago, appearing at Chicago Shakespeare (39 productions), Goodman, Steppenwolf, Court, Writers, Northlight, Marriott Lincolnshire and Victory Gardens theaters, and has received three Joseph Jefferson Awards (12 nominations), two Artisan Awards and an After Dark Award. Regionally he has performed at Milwaukee Rep, Paper Mill, Fulton, Pittsburgh Public and BoarsHead theaters. Greg appeared on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning revival of West Side Story and also at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Barbican Theatre in London, Vienna’s English Theatre and Singapore Rep.

At Peninsula Players we generally follow the school-age and up rule. One or two of our shows have adult themes that may be inappropriate for young children. In general, we suggest ages seven and over attend for attention span purposes. Everybody attending a performance must purchase a seat. Babes in arms will not be allowed in the theater. NEIL BROOKSHIRE Actor – A Trick of the Light; A Murder is Announced; Silent Sky

His previous work with Peninsula Players includes Miss Holmes and The 39 Steps. A Wyoming native, Neil earned a BA from Boise State University and an MFA in Acting from Northern Illinois University. Other theater credits: Great Lakes Theater, Company of Fools, Boise Contemporary Theater, Idaho Dance Theatre, Opera Idaho, Seattle Novyi Theatre, People’s Light, Cadence Theatre Co, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Door Shakespeare, Renaissance Theaterworks, and ten seasons with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival. His screen work includes the features “The Pact” and “Coming Up for Air.” Neil is also a visual artist and founder of Dirt Hills Productions, which produces films and audio plays.

Outstanding Student Awards Peninsula Players Theatre Scholarship

Peninsula Players Theatre is pleased to announce the launch of a scholarship for Door County high school seniors pursuing a major or minor in arts management, music or theater. Five $500 scholarships were available, one to a student at each of the Door County high schools. This award was created by Peninsula Players Theatre and its Board of Directors to foster the career path and arts education of graduating high school students across Door County in the performing arts. Peninsula Players Theatre, America’s oldest professional resident summer theater, is proud to support the higher education of Door County seniors pursuing an advanced degree with a major or minor in arts management, music or theater. Last spring, Peninsula Players fashioned the Outstanding Student Award to recognize and reward graduating high school students across Door County for their achievements in and enthusiasm for the performing arts. “The Board of Directors is thrilled to provide five scholarships to students wishing to further their education in the performing arts beyond high school,” Peninsula Players Managing Director Brian Kelsey said.

The four recipients of the Peninsula Players Outstanding Student Award are from top left Evan Henry, a recent graduate of Gibraltar High School; Kole Mallien, a recent graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School; MaCayla Moore, Southern Door High School; and Natalie Meikle, a recent graduate of Sevastopol High School and the inaugural recipient of the Peninsula Players Theatre Scholarship. Each student has demonstrated a high level of participation and creativity in the arts, including drama, music or chorale, during their academic matriculation.

Peninsula Players Theatre and the National Standards for Arts Education agrees that the arts are an inseparable part of education and of the human journey. Arts education extends beyond academics; students show an increased self-confidence and selfunderstanding, enhanced communication skills and improved cognition.

Arts Education. “We value them for themselves, and because we do, we believe knowing and practicing them is fundamental to the healthy development of our children’s minds and spirits. Thank You James ‘Digger’ DeGroot! Peninsula Players Company Member Since 1969, Board Member 1983-2018 For over 50 years, Digger has volunteered his time, energy and gregarious personality to Peninsula Players Theatre. Digger began his association with Peninsula Players in 1969 when, on his days off from Coast Guard duty, he was an apprentice and stagehand. He received meals as payment while living at the theater and helping to build the scenery and park cars. “I couldn’t read a blue print and once built a fireplace backwards,” he said. Digger eventually became an acting apprentice and appeared in a number of plays including Anything Goes, 6 RMS RIV VU and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Digger worked alongside steadfast Players such as Joseph Bell, Carle Benson, Jeanne Bolan, Vicki Childers, Dennis Kennedy, Jeannette Leahy, James B. McKenzie, Jean Sincere, Francesca Zambello and more. His favorite costars at another venue were six monkies. In 1978 he bought the Feedbag Gourmet Drive-In near Peninsula State Park’s entrance in Fish Creek and re-named it Digger’s. “My acting buddies thought it was great,” Digger shared with the Peninsula Pulse. “It was a ‘real job’ and my name was up in lights.” Digger’s became known as the Sardis of Fish Creek when autographed photos of actors who graced local stages adorned its walls. Everyone at Peninsula Players is grateful for his generous service on the Board and for serving as Treasurer during the construction of the stage house and audience pavilion. We are exceptionally thankful for his uplifting spirit, encouragement, gleeful sense of humor and unwavering support of all things Peninsula Players. Once a Player, Always a Player.

About the Playwright/Composers ... BRUCE JOEL RUBIN Book & Lyrics – Ghost The Musical

Bruce Joel Rubin, born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, is an Oscar-winning screenwriter, meditation teacher and photographer. His films often explore themes of life and death with metaphysical and science fiction elements. Rubin won an Academy Award for his original screenplay, “Ghost,” which was the highest grossing film of 1990 and was nominated for Best Picture. “Each film was an attempt, successful or not, to witness and explore the unseen world of our lives,” he said on his website. “I wanted to speak to adults and to children and to touch the inner mystery of our shared being.” He has written numerous other screenplays including “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Deep Impact,” “Stuart Little 2,” “The Last Mimzy,” “The Time Traveler’s Wife” and “My Life,” which he also directed.

Six-time Grammy award winner, Glen Ballard, is one of popular music’s most accomplished producers/ songwriters and arrangers. He has sold more than 150 million records worldwide and has worked with a diverse array of the finest singers and artists in the business, from Aretha Franklin to Van Halen and Aerosmith to Michael Jackson. One of Ballard’s biggest successes involved chart-topping, multiplatinum album Jagged Little Pill (33 million worldwide, four Grammys -including Album of the Year) which Ballard co-wrote and produced for Alanis Morissette, and was named Best Album of the Decade (1990s) by Billboard magazine. Ballard has most recently had success writing hit songs for film, including the Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated song Believe for “The Polar Express,” Ordinary Miracle for “Charlotte’s Web” and A Hero Comes Home for “Beowulf.” Ballard’s newest chapter of this vast legacy is his recent work in musicals.

Acclaimed songwriter, musician and Eurythmics co-founder, Dave Stewart is recognized as one of the most respected and accomplished talents in the music industry today, with a music career spanning four decades and over 100 million album sales. Stewart co-wrote and produced each Eurythmics album in his world-famous duo with Annie Lennox, and has also produced albums and co-written songs with Tom Petty, Gwen Stefani, Jon Bon Jovi, Stevie Nicks, Bryan Ferry, Katy Perry, Mick Jagger, Sinead O’Connor, Joss Stone and many others. Along the way, his work has garnered numerous awards including UK Best Songwriting and Producing Awards, a Golden Globe, and Grammy Awards. Stewart has scored films for several directors, including Robert Altman, Paul Verhoven, and Ted Demme, and has written and produced the title songs for many hit movies, including “Madagascar 3.” Together with Mick Jagger, he wrote and produced the score for “Alfie,” starring Jude Law, which won the pair a Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Stewart, along with songwriter/producer Glen Ballard, wrote the music for the musical adaptation of the 1990 Jerry Zucker film “Ghost,” which opened to rave reviews in London’s West End July 2011 and premiered on Broadway April 23, 2012.

The Kathryn A. Doerr Apprentice Fund

Established in 2013 in memory of Kathryn A. Doerr (Katie), by her family, this fund provides critical support for Peninsula Players apprentice program. During her lifetime, Katie was an advocate and supporter of art education, notably to art education in the Door County community she loved. Her legacy will provide scholarships for three apprentices during the Players season. This season’s interns supported by the Kathryn A. Doerr Apprentice Fund are Jalen Jones, whose career focus is on stage management; Nate Dorband, who is honing all aspects of his technical theater skills; and Leah Peavler, who is excited to expand her knowledge of arts management and development. Peninsula Players A Brief History of the Theatre in a Garden Take a rustic, woodsy site outfitted with a few little cabins that once served a boys’ camp along the bay. Add a dream, a barnlike proscenium stagehouse and a hundred or so seats open to the stars above and you have the early days of Peninsula Players. Richard and Caroline Fisher, a young novice brother-and-sister team, started the troupe in 1935 when they produced Noel Coward’s Hay Fever at a site behind the former Bonnie Brook Cottage/Motel in Fish Creek, now the Fish Creek Town Park.

continued their careers in the arts, either on- or off-stage, and some have even gone onto stardom.

By 1937 the Fishers along with their parents (“Mama” who designed and made costumes and fed the company and “Papa,” the general handyman) realized the ensemble had outgrown the motel site so they purchased the 1941, Camille with Margot Fisher and Leo Lucker 22-acre Wildwood Boys Camp, the present site of the theater.

Although Peninsula Players began under the stars, a canvas top was draped above the audience in 1946, and in 1957 Caroline’s dream of a permanent roof came true when the open-sided pavilion was built. In 1960, after 25 years of involvement, the Fishers sold the theater at public auction to Kenneth Carroad, a New York City attorney. Jim McKenzie was hired to oversee the Players’ operations as producer. He and his wife, actress Jeanne Bolan, both associated with the Players since 1947, took on 2008 Born Yesterday with Erica Elam and Kevin McKillip the Fisher legacy.

The non-profit organization, Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc., was formed in 1962, to operate the theater, and in 1978 Carroad sold out. McKenzie became owner of the property in 1978 and continued as the Company’s producer.

In the 84 years Peninsula Players has performed in the Theatre in a Garden, more than 1,000 actors have crossed our boards. Some had their first professional experiences at the Players. Many 34

More than a decade ago many improvements were made; this included actor housing, public restroom facilities, expanded and upgraded rehearsal hall and storage areas and a computerized box office. The close of the 2005 season brought the beginning of the Players’ largest improvement – a new stage house and audience pavilion.

Through the generous support of many donors, benefactors and volunteers all intent on continuing the magic of live theater for future generations, the Players built a new facility in the exact same footprint of the first theater. In June 2006, the 621-seat audience pavilion opened. She was also the first stage management intern ever at BoarsHead Theatre. Eileen is thrilled to be back at her home away from home, Peninsula Players Theatre. Eileen is originally from Detroit, Michigan. She was a 2010 intern at Peninsula Players and has been lucky enough to come back to work at Players as a scenic artist for many summers now. Eileen now calls Chicago home, where she just finished her first season as the scenic charge at Northlight Theatre. She also works as a freelance scenic artist at a few other theaters in the city including Raven Theater, American Blues Theatre and Red Orchid Theatre.

JOE COURT Sound Engineer – Ghost The Musical Sound Designer – Silent Sky

Joe is excited to return for his second season at Peninsula Players. He has spent the last 22 years working professionally as a sound designer, engineer, and educator. His work has been heard in Chicago (TUTA, A Red Orchid, Mary-Arrchie, Emerald City, and many, many more), New York (59E59, Off-Broadway), Los Angeles (REDCAT at the Disney Concert Hall), McCarter Theatre Center (Princeton, New Jersey), The Clarence Brown Theatre (Knoxville, Tennessee), Great Lakes Theatre (Cleveland, Ohio), and the Idaho, Lake Tahoe, and Illinois Shakespeare Festivals. Joe is an artistic associate with TUTA Theatre, Chicago. Joe served as the sound engineer for the Chicago production of the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet. JEFFREY D. KMIEC Scenic Designer – Ghost The Musical

Jeff is an award-winning, Chicago-based scenic designer. His designs have been seen at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Paramount Theatre, Drury Lane Theatre, Marriott Theatre, Timeline Theatre, American Players Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Porchlight, Raven Theatre, The Artistic Home, Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre, Heritage Theatre Festival and The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. He received three consecutive Equity Jeff Awards for his designs on The Little Mermaid at the Paramount Theatre (2017), Deathtrap at Drury Lane Theatre (2016), and Les Miserable at The Paramount Theatre (Co-Design with Kevin Depint in 2015). Jeffrey received his MFA from the University of Virginia and is a member of USA 829.

KÄRIN SIMONSON KOPISCHKE Costume Designer – Ghost The Musical; Silent Sky

Kärin, in her 19th season with Peninsula Players, has designed costumes for more than 47 Players productions. Kärin has received the Joseph Jefferson Award, AriZoni Award and a Prague Quadrennial nomination for her costume designs for regional theatre Tony winners American Conservatory Theater, Chicago Shakespeare, Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf, Long Wharf, Victory Gardens, Children’s Theatre Company, Crossroads, Huntington Theatre, Utah Shakespeare Festival and Cincinnati Playhouse, as well as Milwaukee Rep, Skylight, First Stage, Door Shakespeare and American Players Theatre. Kärin taught costume design at The Theatre School of DePaul, Northwestern and Carroll Universities before heading the costume design department at Lawrence University. She designed costumes for the feature film “Feed the Fish” with Tony Shalhoub and had the privilege to design new works for Harry Connick Jr., Stephen Schwartz and Kevin Puts’ 2012 Pulitzer Prize winning opera “Silent Night.” She is a proud member of United Scenic Artists (USA 829).

GUY RHODES Lighting Designer – A Murder is Announced; Ghost The Musical

Guy is excited to make his debut at Peninsula Players. His Chicago-area credits include Dames at Sea, Cabaret, Ghost The Musical (Theatre at the Center), Hedda Gabler (Theatre Northwest), Mother Hicks (Hammond Academy for the Performing Arts), Hairspray (Star Plaza Theatre), Jitney (West Side Theatre Guild), and The Rainmaker (Falling Drum). National credits include The Polar Express Train Ride, four tours for R&B singer Anthony Hamilton, and hip hop artist Kendrick Lamar’s performances at the British Summer Time Festival in London and at Essence Festival in New Orleans. Guy frequently works in the visual disciplines of photography and video production. Top assignments include the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korea (USA Today Sports Images). Previously at Peninsula Players, Barry designed Heroes (2010) and Nunsense (2015). Adaptations: Myths to Musicals Ghost The Musical All cultures enjoy sharing a good story. Before television, film, novels, or stage plays, stories were passed to the next generation through oral tradition. Folktales, myths, and everything from Aesop’s Fables to the Brothers Grimm collections were recorded. Eventually, stories and novels were adapted to the stage, stage works to films, as well as films to the stage. Ghost The Musical is based on the 1990s film by Bruce Joel Rubin. The romantic and heartwrenching film starred Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, and Whoopi Goldberg. Ghost The Musical was first adapted to the stage for London’s West End in 2011 and made its Broadway debut in 2012. It was then reshaped in 2016 with a smaller cast into a more intimate version in a co-production with The Fulton Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Maine State Music Theatre (MSMT) Brunswick, Maine. Ghost The Musical is one of many works that have been adapted to the stage. Shakespeare is the most filmed author in any language. The Guinness Book of Records lists 410 feature-length films and television versions of his work. Last year’s Tony Award winner for Best Musical was The Band’s Visit, which also earned Tony Shalhoub (star of the Door County film “Feed the Fish”) a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, and was inspired by a 2007 Israeli film. The 1982 novel “The Color Purple” was first adapted to film in 1985 and then into a Tony Award-winning musical in 2006. The Full Monty was first a film produced in 1997 before it was adapted into a musical in 2000 and into a play in 2003. Whether one appreciates the aesthetic of turning the page and creating visual images in your imagination or being engrossed as an audience member by the craft of the filmmakers or stage artists, generation after generation, good stories continue to enthrall, inspire and captivate audiences. “Ghost” the film first entranced moviegoers in 1990 and had audiences believing in the endless power of love.

“Ghost” follows the story of Sam and Molly, whose romance takes a shocking turn after Sam’s unexpected death. Sam enlists the aid of Oda Mae Brown, a phony psychic, to help him reach Molly. Oda Mae’s initial disbelief and reluctance hilariously clash with Sam’s emotional desperation. Twenty years after the film’s success, Rubin was approached by producers about adapting the story into a musical. In the Lancaster Online, Rubin said he originally did not want his story turned into a Broadway show. “I fought it for years,” Rubin said. “The movie succeeded in the way I wanted it to. The story touched a nerve with people.” MSMT and The Fulton Theatre’s re-tooling of “Ghost” returned intimacy to the story, and Rubin loved it. “It has shifted into something other than what it was, but it is so right,” he said. “It’s a rebirth.” Marc Robin is Fulton Theatre’s Executive Producer and helped re-shape the musical. Robin directed the musical Dames at Sea for Peninsula Players in 2002 and moved to Lancaster in 2005 after spending almost 24 years working in Chicago. Curt Dale Clark danced and sang in the 1991 Peninsula Players production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and is now MSMT’s artistic director. “I love the story and the music, and with this version, we could go back to theater magic,” Robin says. “Sometimes shows have so much packaging; you don’t see the story. Look at The Color Purple. It was a huge show, but they brought it back as a chamber piece. Strip everything away, and if what’s underneath is good, the story will shine.” Good stories are what Greg Vinkler, artistic director of Peninsula Players Theatre, wants to bring to Door County audiences. “At its heart, Ghost The Musical remains a beautiful love story featuring a couple very much in love,” Vinkler said. “But it’s also a thriller with a supernatural twist that has some enormously funny comic moments. It’s absolutely wonderful storytelling.”

VALERIE MAZE Music Director – Ghost The Musical

Valerie is excited to return to Peninsula Players for her eighth season! Some past Peninsula Players productions include The Drowsy Chaperone, The Bridges of Madison County, Peter and the Starcatcher and The Full Monty. Recent Chicago credits include Conductor with Drury Lane Theatre’s White Christmas and Goodman Theatre’s Brigadoon. At Lyric Opera of Chicago, in addition to serving as Assistant Conductor and Dance Pianist for several operas, she has served as Assistant Conductor on My Fair Lady, The King and I, Carousel, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma! and Showboat. Other Chicago credits include productions with: Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Writers Theatre (A Little Night Music, Jeff Award nomination), Theatre at the Center (Cat’s, After Dark Award), Light Opera Works, Provision Theater, Elgin Opera, and DuPage Opera. JANET ANDERSON Musician – Keyboards – Ghost The Musical

Janet is a piano teacher and freelance musician with the Anderson Music Studio of Sturgeon Bay. She is currently pianist and choir director at Bay View Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay and for The Peninsula Singers. Janet has played keyboards locally for Peninsula Players, Northern Sky Theater, Isadoora Theatre and several area schools. Over the last 26 years, she has taught keyboarding classes and accompanied for the music and theater departments of both UW-Green Bay and St. Norbert College. Janet is married to trumpeter Andy Anderson and enjoys living and raising her family here in Door County.

LYNN GUDMUNSDEN Musician – Violin – Ghost The Musical

Lynn has thought of Door County as home since age five when her mom opened the Ull Butikk shop in Ephraim. This is her second time performing with the Peninsula Players. At age 15, Lynn joined Jean Janes, a piano player, and together they were the “pit orchestra” for the production Dirty Work at the Crossroads. Lynn began violin at age 9, but wanted an instrument that would accompany singing, eventually learning the ukulele and guitar. A high school graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and classically trained, Lynn began performing folk, blues, country and bluegrass while living in Alaska many years ago. Although she has an MS degree in mathematics, music is her true passion. Currently you will find her performing throughout Door County in the David and Lynn duo and with “One Voice,” a gospel trio dedicated to bringing live music to seniors across the country.

BRUCE NEWBERN Musician – Drums – Ghost The Musical

Bruce is happy to be spending the summer with Peninsula Players. He’s previously been on the Player’s stage in Peter and the Starcatcher, as a drumming priest in Nunsense and in the Bobcat Band in Always...Patsy Cline. Bruce has spent other summers playing in the park with Northern Sky Theater. During the off-season, he spends quality time teaching music at Saint John Bosco Catholic School. He lives in Sturgeon Bay with his wife Karen and enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren. GEORGE SAWYN Musician – Guitar – Ghost The Musical

George started playing guitar at the age of 12 after five years of piano lessons, motivated by good old American peer pressure. His earliest musical heroes include The Beach Boys, The Ventures and The Beatles. After about two years of hoping to be America’s next rock star, he discovered Chet Atkins, and with him, a whole universe of musical styles, including jazz, country and classical music. George’s other musical influences include jazz guitarists Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny, jazz pianist Marian McPartland, and classical guitarists John Williams and Andrew York. After 38 years as a professional guitarist in the Chicago area, George relocated to Door County in 2010. Since then, he has performed and recorded with many of the country’s best musicians. He has done session recording at Han Christain’s Studio 330 and was the guitarist for Peninsula Players’ productions of The Bridges of Madison County, The Full Monty and Always…Patsy Cline. www.musicbygeorge.com.

CRAIG McCLELLAND Musician – Bass – Ghost The Musical

Craig is delighted to return to Peninsula Players where past credits include The Drowsy Chaperone, The Bridges of Madison County, The Full Monty and Always…Patsy Cline. Craig studied bass at LA’s Musician’s Institute and holds degrees from the University of New Mexico (BS/Music/ Communication) and California State University (MA/Humanities). He is a composer as well as a performer. Craig’s works were recently featured at the UNM International Composer’s Symposium in Albuquerque, NM and the Phoenix Experimental Arts Festival. Craig may also be seen this summer playing bass, tuba, and ukulele with the Vespus Marimba Band, the Sukey Jump Band, and the Gazebo Guys. When not performing, Craig most enjoys spending time with his wife, Amy, and his children, Mari and Connor.

MICHAEL DEWHIRST Musician – Cello – Ghost The Musical

Michael serves as Principal Cello for the Weidner Philharmonic, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UWGB) Festival Orchestra and Civic Symphony of Green Bay (GB). He also performs with the Manitowoc Symphony and Birder Chorale Orchestra. An active proponent of new music, he co-founded a very small consortium (chamber) and I/You (Sop/Vcl), both active at UWGB. He is Instructor of Cello at UWGB and has collaborated on numerous faculty recitals on both cello and bass. He performs on electric cello with Vic Ferrari Symphony on the Rocks and Celebration Church and also appears with Trans Siberian Orchestra, Doctors in Recital, Cornerstone Jazz Orchestra and Blue Diamond Orchestra. He serves as a clinician and low-string specialist with UWGB Summer Music Camps, the GB and Howard/Suamico Public Schools, the GB Youth Symphonies and Rock Infused Orchestra, all while staying busy in his private studio.

Let art begin at home and let it spread through the children and the parents, and through the schools and the institutions, and through government. And let us start by acceptance, not negation-acceptance that the arts are important everywhere, and that they can exist and flourish in small places as well as large, with money or without it, according to the will of the people. Let us put firmly and permanently aside the cliché that the arts are a frill. Let us accept the goodness of art where we are now, and expand its worth in the places where people live.” The Wisconsin Arts Board embraces this vision: it guides our belief that the arts are basic to human life and essential to the human spirit. 39c

Peninsula Players again ranked high among applicants for these state grants, which are awarded on a competitive basis through a rigorous evaluation process. Panelists cited the 84-year old theater’s long-term financial health, increasing attendance, range of programming and creative efforts to stimulate community interest. The awarding of this grant indicates the Players programming and community engagement provides the highest level of excellence.

Join the Pre-Show Seminars at Peninsula Players The Players will host Pre-Show Seminars before select performances of the 2019 season. Audiences are invited to arrive early for special seminars on topics related to the shows. Pre-show Seminars begin at 6:30 p.m. in the theater. General Admission Seating, no tickets necessary. AUDRA BAAKARI BOYLE Business Manager

Audi has called the Peninsula Players home for 25 seasons. She has served as the Box Office Manager and Public Relations Director before her appointment as Business Manager. She has worked throughout the Midwest at various theaters serving as Assistant Sales Manager at The New Theatre Restaurant in Kansas City, Kansas and as Business Manager for the University of Fayetteville, Arkansas. She earned a BFA degree in technical theater, an MA in theater history and public relations and certificates in human resources and non-profit administration from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Danielle is thrilled to be celebrating her ninth season with Peninsula Players! She is a native of Chicago and a proud alumna of St. Norbert College earning a BA in business administration and theatre studies. Danielle has an array of theater experience both on and off stage, as well as behind the scenes. She has had the privilege of working in various theater positions with a variety of theater professionals and audiences. CODY WESTGAARD Production Manager

Cody is thrilled to join Peninsula Players for his third season. Assistant stage manager for 42nd Street, White Christmas, Saturday Night Fever and Hazel at Drury Lane Theatre, Mamma Mia! at Paramount Theater, and The Joseph Jefferson Awards (2006–2018). His other credits include Assistant Production Manager (APM) at NYU Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama (2011– 2015), APM at Williamstown Theatre Festival (2009–2011), PM at Noble Fool Theatricals (2007–2008). Cody also works for MACE (Movement and Combat Education) as the Operations Manager and co-create the Stage Management Intensive. Cody earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre at Loyola University Chicago and Master of Fine Arts in Production Technology and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. He is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association.

NATHAN ANGRICK Technical Director

Nate is delighted to return to Peninsula Players for his second season as Technical Director. Nate was born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and graduated UW-Stevens Point with a BFA in technical theater and design. He moved to the East Coast and worked as technical director for the Plimoth Players and Payomet PAC in Massachusetts. He has spent the past few years working as a scenic carpenter at The Juilliard School in New York City. After this summer, he will attend the Yale School of Drama to obtain his MFA in Technical Direction and Production.

KYLE PINGEL Costume Designer – George Washington’s Teeth Costume Shop Manager

Kyle returns to his home by the bay for his eighth season as a Peninsula Player. His most recent costume design credits at Peninsula Players include: Salvage, Almost, Maine and Nunsense. When Kyle is not at Peninsula Players, he is the Costume Production Coordinator for Illinois Wesleyan University’s School of Theatre Arts. Additionally, Kyle is a mentor for RE:THEATRE, a program that helps create art that matters. He enjoys building and designing wigs as a freelance artist in his spare time.

Erin joins us from Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she is a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 140. Most recent works include Assistant Lighting Designer for A Night with Janis Joplin at the Ivoryton Playhouse in Connecticut; Head Electrician for Million Dollar Quartet the National Tour (Barter Theatre & Gershwin Entertainment). She was Assistant Master Electrician and a Lighting Designer for the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. She is a graduate of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise with a BFA in Theatre, where she focused in lighting design.

The Peninsula Players Winter Play Reading Series

Join the Peninsula Players in the winter months for its ninth season of free public play readings. The Play’s the Thing is part of the Players’ winter outreach programming, presenting professional play readings for the public. In 2019, the Peninsula Players presented Apparitions by Kristine Thatcher, in coordination with Door County Reads and its exploration of “The Death and Life of the Great Lakes” by Dan are Anne Herring, Amy Ensign, Erica Elam, Egan and “Wintering” by Peter Geye, opened the Pictured Carmen Roman and Cassandra Bissell as they perform three-part play series. in a reading of Tales of Men and Ghosts adapted by Steve Pickering from stories by Edith Wharton before a capacity The play series also included Tales of Men and crowd at Björklunden in March of 2019 Ghosts adapted by Steve Pickering from stories by Edith Wharton and The Gentleman Thief, a new screwball comedy by Mark Brown. Peninsula Players Internship Program Theater is one of the few professions where apprentices can learn from those who practice their art. The internship program at Peninsula Players Theatre is part of a tradition which runs as deep as the roots of the theater itself. Since the Peninsula Players launched its first season in 1935, interns, then called apprentices, have been given the opportunity to work side-by-side with professionals, learning the craft by observing and participating in it. Working in theater necessitates honing very well-rounded skills. Gaining experience in a professional setting, such as the Peninsula Players, develops communication skills, provides hands-on training and builds networking opportunities with working professionals. Participants in the internship program work with the theater’s professional actors, managers and technicians for 14 to 20 weeks in all facets of theater, from backstage to front office, making the Peninsula Players Internship Program unique among theater programs. The program provides participants a chance to explore many aspects of theater production. As each show opens, the intern’s daytime and evening assignments rotate, thus creating a constant path of growth throughout the season. The program’s diversity and atmosphere attracts applicants from across the country. Mixing work and responsibilities, interns are offered opportunities to enhance their résumés, try different areas in theater production and make contacts with working actors, designers and managers. Interns participating in our 2019 season came from a variety of academic programs in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Texas, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin. Go Behind the Footlights at Peninsula Players Since 1935, Peninsula Players has entertained and delighted Door County audiences. Patrons are curious about how shows are produced at Peninsula Players. A free backstage tour provides a peek into the behind-the-scenes work as well as a review of the Players history. In this walking tour, patrons see for themselves the work environment, from workspaces to a bird’s eye view of the stage from the tech gallery. Those interested should phone the box office to reserve a spot on a tour as space is limited. Tours will begin at 2 p.m. on the following Sundays: June 23, 30, July 14, August 4, 11 and 25.
