Welcome to the "Players!” It is another year, and once again it is an honor and privilege to welcome you to our 84th season. Experiencing live theater can and should be invigorating on many levels, whether making us laugh, cry, or feel other or even new emotions. Every now and then, you may hear from “professional consultants” that live performances are financially doomed because they cannot be replicated in a cost efficient manner. Yet arts organizations continue to thrive. Why? Maybe because we do not give standing ovations to film or electronic versions, no matter how entertaining they may be. And each year, Greg and Brian seek to give us all another season of great theater. We have been busy during our quiet period in improving and building amenities for you, our patrons, and for our actors, professional theater staff and interns who all live on campus during our season. Seasonal housing continues to be a challenge for all organizations in Door County. Given the condition of much of our decades-old housing, we continue to explore building new staff housing. I mentioned this in last year’s letter, and progress has been made. But we need to act prudently and consider available options to assure ultimate success. So for now, all I can say is “stay tuned.” Peninsula Players has been fortunate to have the support of many, whether through attendance at performances, being a sponsor or playbill advertiser, or contributing to our Annual Fund drive. Even a kind word now and again is inspiring. This support is the life blood of all performing arts organizations, and your dedication has meant and will continue to mean the world to all of us at the Players. Door County is fortunate to have an abundance of exceptional performing and visual arts organizations, making our community a truly amazing place to be. We encourage all of our artistic colleagues to be the best they can be giving us a vibrant arts community for all to enjoy. And with your continuing support, Peninsula Players will surely be one of the crown jewels in the Door County’s artistic tiara.

Thank you and enjoy the show!

Welcome to the 84th season of Peninsula Players’ entertaining shows, crackling bonfires and gorgeous sunsets! The warmest of welcomes to all of you new faces who are experiencing the Players for the first time - we truly hope you enjoy your stay with us! And the heartiest of welcomes to old Players - to you returning friends who have relished the Peninsula Players experience, some of you for many decades! We are very happy you are and continue making us part of your Door County adventure. I am delighted with the variety of shows we’re presenting this season, from the world premiere of A Trick Of The Light, a comedy about a man who finds he has the ability to make himself invisible (and what does he do with that?!) to a classic Agatha Christie in which the inimitable Miss Marple, with much danger to herself, discovers why A Murder Is Announced. From there we rocket into the rambunctious world of Ghost The Musical, a romantic fantasy thriller based on the iconic 1990 film, and then we travel to 1898 Harvard for the beautiful Silent Sky, where a troupe of intrepid lady astronomers bravely change the course of science. Lastly, we snagged the Midwest première of George Washington’s Teeth, a madcap comedy that is, shall we say, somewhat historical. It’s a lineup I’m especially fond of for lots of reasons, one of which I didn’t realize till after I’d put the season together. And that’s the fact that, I think probably for the first time since I started at the Players in 1988, the number of women’s roles outnumber the men’s two-to-one! Nice to see the tables turned for a change! I love all these shows and hope you will have a terrific time with them as you enjoy the whole experience here at Peninsula Players Theatre! A warm welcome to all!

Enjoy Your Visit to Peninsula Players Seating. The grounds, canteen and Beer Garden are open 90 minutes before curtain. Seating in the theater begins 30 minutes prior to each performance. Late arrivals. To ensure the enjoyment of our patrons who arrive on time, and in respect to our performers, guests arriving late will not be seated until an appropriate break in the performance. Please note that you will be seated in the back of the house until intermission. At that point, you may move to your assigned seats. This minimizes distraction for other patrons. Lost ticket. If you must leave during the performance, please do so quietly through the rear house doors. Re-entry while the performance is in progress is at the discretion of the House Manager. Restrooms. Restrooms are located north of the theater near the lower parking lot. As you exit the audience pavilion on the Beer Garden side, follow the foot path past the canteen to the next building beyond. Follow the “star lights” for your respite. Exchanges. Tickets for exchange must be received by the Box Office no later than 24 hours before the performance. Single ticket exchanges are good only for the 2019 season while season ticket exchanges must stay within the same show. PENINSULA PLAYERS AWARDS LOCAL STUDENTS

Outstanding Student Awards Peninsula Players Theatre Scholarship

Peninsula Players Theatre is pleased to announce the launch of a scholarship for Door County high school seniors pursuing a major or minor in arts management, music or theater. Five $500 scholarships were available, one to a student at each of the Door County high schools. This award was created by Peninsula Players Theatre and its Board of Directors to foster the career path and arts education of graduating high school students across Door County in the performing arts. Peninsula Players Theatre, America’s oldest professional resident summer theater, is proud to support the higher education of Door County seniors pursuing an advanced degree with a major or minor in arts management, music or theater. Last spring, Peninsula Players fashioned the Outstanding Student Award to recognize and reward graduating high school students across Door County for their achievements in and enthusiasm for the performing arts. “The Board of Directors is thrilled to provide five scholarships to students wishing to further their education in the performing arts beyond high school,” Peninsula Players Managing Director Brian Kelsey said.

The four recipients of the Peninsula Players Outstanding Student Award are from top left Evan Henry, a recent graduate of Gibraltar High School; Kole Mallien, a recent graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School; MaCayla Moore, Southern Door High School; and Natalie Meikle, a recent graduate of Sevastopol High School and the inaugural recipient of the Peninsula Players Theatre Scholarship. Each student has demonstrated a high level of participation and creativity in the arts, including drama, music or chorale, during their academic matriculation.

Peninsula Players Theatre and the National Standards for Arts Education agrees that the arts are an inseparable part of education and of the human journey. Arts education extends beyond academics; students show an increased self-confidence and selfunderstanding, enhanced communication skills and improved cognition.

Arts Education. “We value them for themselves, and because we do, we believe knowing and practicing them is fundamental to the healthy development of our children’s minds and spirits. That is why, in any civilization―ours included―the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term ‘education.’ We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts.”

“The arts are such a critical part of a student’s overall education as well as continued personal development,” said Peninsula Players Managing Director Brian Kelsey. “It is with great pride that we reward and encourage the development of careers in the performing arts. The Door County peninsula is alive with a wealth of diverse visual and performing arts organizations, and our communities are perfectly situated to play a critical role in the continued education of our students and adult population. It is so rewarding to see that our schools in Door County still value the arts as part of core learning and the adult population embrace life-long learning.”

Special thanks to donors Bill & Betty Parsons for their generous contribution towards establishing the scholarship fund. For more information on contributing to the Peninsula Players Scholarship Fund or applying for the scholarship, please contact Development & Events Manager Danielle Szmanda at 920-868-3287 or danielle@peninsulaplayers.com. More information and a full list of qualifications for the Peninsula Players Scholarship is listed at www.doorcountyscholarships.org.

Thank You James ‘Digger’ DeGroot! Peninsula Players Company Member Since 1969, Board Member 1983-2018 For over 50 years, Digger has volunteered his time, energy and gregarious personality to Peninsula Players Theatre. Digger began his association with Peninsula Players in 1969 when, on his days off from Coast Guard duty, he was an apprentice and stagehand. He received meals as payment while living at the theater and helping to build the scenery and park cars. “I couldn’t read a blue print and once built a fireplace backwards,” he said. Digger eventually became an acting apprentice and appeared in a number of plays including Anything Goes, 6 RMS RIV VU and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Digger worked alongside steadfast Players such as Joseph Bell, Carle Benson, Jeanne Bolan, Vicki Childers, Dennis Kennedy, Jeannette Leahy, James B. McKenzie, Jean Sincere, Francesca Zambello and more. His favorite costars at another venue were six monkies. In 1978 he bought the Feedbag Gourmet Drive-In near Peninsula State Park’s entrance in Fish Creek and re-named it Digger’s. “My acting buddies thought it was great,” Digger shared with the Peninsula Pulse. “It was a ‘real job’ and my name was up in lights.” Digger’s became known as the Sardis of Fish Creek when autographed photos of actors who graced local stages adorned its walls. Everyone at Peninsula Players is grateful for his generous service on the Board and for serving as Treasurer during the construction of the stage house and audience pavilion. We are exceptionally thankful for his uplifting spirit, encouragement, gleeful sense of humor and unwavering support of all things Peninsula Players. Once a Player, Always a Player.

Meet Henrietta Swan Leavitt ...

Her Life and Legacy By Chris Chan

Henrietta Swan Leavitt, the central character of the play Silent Sky, was an astronomer whose discoveries helped to calculate the size of the universe. Born in 1868 on the Fourth of July in Massachusetts, Leavitt was the daughter of a Congregationalist minister and the eldest sibling of seven. The family moved between Massachusetts and Ohio for most of her youth, and Leavitt’s higher education consisted of a couple of years at Ohio’s Oberlin College, focusing on a special college preparatory program, and later music, followed by studies at the Society for the Collegiate Instruction of Women (later known as Radcliffe College, often referred to as the “Harvard Annex”). Her work studying mathematics and astronomy led her to take a volunteer position at the Harvard College Observatory. For about two years, her parents paid her expenses while she worked as an unpaid research assistant. Most of her assignments were connected to analyzing photographs and measuring star brightness. One particular point of focus was the pulsation of star brightness, and Leavitt took many notes on how stars grew brighter and dimmer at regular intervals. This was painstaking work that required incredible focus and dedication, along with close attention to detail. Eventually, she developed severe eyesight problems, and ceased her work in order to travel to Europe and recover. Leavitt had a connection to Wisconsin as well. Her father’s ministry took him to Beloit at the end of the nineteenth century, and Leavitt spent some time there after her initial stint at the Harvard College Observatory. She worked as an arts assistant at Beloit College for a while, before returning to Harvard. In 1902, Edward Pickering, the director of the Harvard College Observatory, offered Leavitt a job as a “computer.” At the turn of the century, over six dozen trained women were working at the Harvard College Observatory, performing calculations and evaluating data connected to astronomical research. Peninsula Players A Brief History of the Theatre in a Garden Take a rustic, woodsy site outfitted with a few little cabins that once served a boys’ camp along the bay. Add a dream, a barnlike proscenium stagehouse and a hundred or so seats open to the stars above and you have the early days of Peninsula Players. Richard and Caroline Fisher, a young novice brother-and-sister team, started the troupe in 1935 when they produced Noel Coward’s Hay Fever at a site behind the former Bonnie Brook Cottage/Motel in Fish Creek, now the Fish Creek Town Park.

Peninsula Players, circa 1937

continued their careers in the arts, either on- or off-stage, and some have even gone onto stardom.

By 1937 the Fishers along with their parents (“Mama” who designed and made costumes and fed the company and “Papa,” the general handyman) realized the ensemble had outgrown the motel site so they purchased the 1941, Camille with Margot Fisher and Leo Lucker 22-acre Wildwood Boys Camp, the present site of the theater.

Although Peninsula Players began under the stars, a canvas top was draped above the audience in 1946, and in 1957 Caroline’s dream of a permanent roof came true when the open-sided pavilion was built. In 1960, after 25 years of involvement, the Fishers sold the theater at public auction to Kenneth Carroad, a New York City attorney. Jim McKenzie was hired to oversee the Players’ operations as producer. He and his wife, actress Jeanne Bolan, both associated with the Players since 1947, took on 2008 Born Yesterday with Erica Elam and Kevin McKillip the Fisher legacy.

Now in its 84th season it is no longer a dream, we are America’s oldest professional resident summer 1953 Affairs of the State with Robert theater. Thompson and Simon Scott

The non-profit organization, Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc., was formed in 1962, to operate the theater, and in 1978 Carroad sold out. McKenzie became owner of the property in 1978 and continued as the Company’s producer.

In the 84 years Peninsula Players has performed in the Theatre in a Garden, more than 1,000 actors have crossed our boards. Some had their first professional experiences at the Players. Many 34

Anticipating significant renovation and repair to the theater pavilion and surrounding support buildings as well as the need for new production and housing facilities, McKenzie decided to sell the place to the Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc. in 1993. As a member of the Players Board of Directors, McKenzie continued to help preserve and improve the theater’s facilities and environment until his death in 2002.

furnish cutting edge theater experiences is still the hallmark at Peninsula Players. Safeguarding that dream and this lovely Theatre in a Garden is paramount to the Players Board of Directors which is committed to – • Preserve America’s oldest professional resident summer theater; • Support the most exciting theater company possible; • Provide freedom, tools and facilities so artists may entertain, uplift and inform audiences; and

More than a decade ago many improvements were made; this included actor housing, public restroom facilities, expanded and upgraded rehearsal hall and storage areas and a computerized box office. The close of the 2005 season brought the beginning of the Players’ largest improvement – a new stage house and audience pavilion.

• Foster future generations of theater professionals through internships. We hope you enjoy your visit as you explore the theater where the sun sets, the curtain rises and the stars shine.

Through the generous support of many donors, benefactors and volunteers all intent on continuing the magic of live theater for future generations, the Players built a new facility in the exact same footprint of the first theater. In June 2006, the 621-seat audience pavilion opened. Included are up-to-date wiring, more space for actors and scenery a redesigned space to provide better sightlines for the audience, not to mention new comfy seats. (Comparable work can be seen in the book and movie “Hidden Figures.”) The standard pay was 25 to 30 cents an hour. Though to modern sensibilities this is a beggarly sum, at the time, considering inflation, this was a modest yet livable wage, comparing a bit better to many other full-time positions available to women. This work required incredible attention to detail, as a miniscule error in measurement or a simple math error could lead to gigantic mistakes. At Harvard, Leavitt worked on calculations connected to the undulation of brightness in stars, leading to her writing the paper 1777 Variables in the Magellanic Clouds in 1908. The subjects of her study were known as Cephid variable stars, and in her paper, Leavitt outlined the patterns she discerned regarding minimum and maximum star brightness. Brightness and the rate of pulsation were connected, and Leavitt concluded that if two stars have the same pulsation cycle from their dimmest to their brightest points and back again, and one star appears brighter than the other, then the brighter star must be closer to Earth. By developing a formula, it was possible to calculate the distance of stars from Earth based on variations in brightness. This was Leavitt’s great contribution to her field: a way to determine how far stars were from Earth, which became pivotal in calculating the size of the universe. Throughout her career, Leavitt battled with health problems, including issues leading to both loss of hearing and sight. Having money of her own, Leavitt was able to take several extended vacations over the course of her career in order to travel and attempt to recover her health. Leavitt died of stomach cancer in 1921 at the age of 53. She remained a bachelorette throughout her life, and maintained strong ties with her family. She remained devoted to pursuing both her religious and scientific interests. Not long before her death, she was appointed the head of stellar photometry at Harvard. A few years after her passing, the Swedish mathematician Gösta Mittag-Leffler was so impressed with Leavitt’s work in astronomy that he wanted to nominate her for the Nobel Prize in Physics, but the proposal came to naught, as all Nobel candidates must be alive to win. Leavitt’s career went overlooked for decades, and it is only in recent years that her work is beginning to gain more deserved widespread recognition and acclaim.

Peninsula Players Internship Program Theater is one of the few professions where apprentices can learn from those who practice their art. The internship program at Peninsula Players Theatre is part of a tradition which runs as deep as the roots of the theater itself. Since the Peninsula Players launched its first season in 1935, interns, then called apprentices, have been given the opportunity to work side-by-side with professionals, learning the craft by observing and participating in it. Working in theater necessitates honing very well-rounded skills. Gaining experience in a professional setting, such as the Peninsula Players, develops communication skills, provides hands-on training and builds networking opportunities with working professionals. Participants in the internship program work with the theater’s professional actors, managers and technicians for 14 to 20 weeks in all facets of theater, from backstage to front office, making the Peninsula Players Internship Program unique among theater programs. The program provides participants a chance to explore many aspects of theater production. As each show opens, the intern’s daytime and evening assignments rotate, thus creating a constant path of growth throughout the season. The program’s diversity and atmosphere attracts applicants from across the country. Mixing work and responsibilities, interns are offered opportunities to enhance their résumés, try different areas in theater production and make contacts with working actors, designers and managers. Interns participating in our 2019 season came from a variety of academic programs in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Texas, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin. For information about our internship program, phone the Box Office at (920) 868-3287 or contact Production Manager Cody Westgaard or Business Manager Audra Baakari Boyle.

Join the Post-Show Discussions at Peninsula Players The Players will host post-show discussions after select performances in 2019. Audiences are invited to stay after the shows and chat with the actors, designers and directors. Please watch the Players website for pre-show seminar dates. OUR 2019 SEASON June 18 – July 7 A TRICK OF THE LIGHT

An astonishing comedy and a world première comedy by Peter Moore.

Eddie is a 40-something guy who one day discovers a very unexpected and extraordinary skill—he can become invisible. Vanish. Disappear. He confides in his good friends Marty and Darrell, but they can’t help him. When he tells his loving and dazzling wife Beth, the vanishing doesn’t happen in front of her! Why? What to do? As Eddie navigates this extraordinary gift, he and his hilarious buddies learn a little about themselves, life and love.

July 10 – July 28 A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED

A gripping whodunit by Leslie Darbon. Adapted from Agatha Christie’s novel. A small-town newspaper advertisement reads: “A murder is announced and will take place on Friday, October 13th, at Little Paddocks – at 6:30 p.m.” Is it a joke? A party invitation? Unable to resist, a group of curious villagers gather at the appointed time. Suddenly, the lights go out, and a gun fires. What follows is a classic Miss Marple mystery - a puzzle of mixed motives, concealed identities, a second death and a determined Inspector grimly following the twists and turns.

July 31 – Aug 18 GHOST THE MUSICAL

Book & Lyrics by Bruce Joel Rubin. Music & Lyrics by Dave Stewart & Glen Ballard. Based on the Paramount Pictures film written by Bruce Joel Rubin. A timeless romantic fantasy about the power of love. This musical-thriller follows Sam and Molly’s romance, which takes a shocking turn. After Sam’s untimely death, he finds himself trapped between two worlds and refuses to leave Molly when he learns she is in grave danger. In an attempt to communicate with her, Sam enlists the help of a phony psychic, Oda Mae Brown, to hilarious and harrowing effect. This smart, funny, suspenseful and very romantic musical love story features the Righteous Brothers’ classic “Unchained Melody.”

Aug. 21 – Sept 1

SILENT SKY

Sept 4 – Oct 20

GEORGE WASHINGTON’S TEETH

A stellar play by Lauren Gunderson. A “luminously beautiful play.” With warm-hearted wit and infectious joy, the riveting true story of these hidden figures comes to light. In 1893, Henrietta Swan Leavitt, a pioneering scientist whose discoveries opened the galaxies, and her female coworkers at Harvard Observatory are human “computers.” They measure the stars. They are not allowed to touch a telescope, yet Henrietta makes significant observations of the universe and changes how we look at the heavens and the earth.

A new comedy by Mark St. Germain. False teeth, false history and genuine laughter. This zany comedy follows the exploits of the struggling New Bunion Historical Society. With time running out to renew their lease, they must find creative ways to lure visitors to their sleepy New England town. When a set of George Washington’s dentures turn up they brace themselves for all-out war. Heartfelt and somewhat historic, this madcap comedy proves differences don’t divide us, they make us stronger.

June 18 - Aug. 31 - Tues. to Sat – 8 p.m. Sun. 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4 - Oct. 19 - Tuesday – Sunday 7 p.m.
