Good Evening Playgoers, On behalf of the Board of Directors and company of Peninsula Players Theatre, I would like to welcome you to our historic 80th season! I am very excited for this year’s productions chosen by Artistic Director Greg Vinkler in collaboration with our Managing Director, Brian Kelsey. There is no question that it will once again be a season to remember. A great deal has transpired at the Theatre in a Garden over the past 80 years. We have presented more than 500 productions, apprenticed over 600 interns, entertained hundreds of thousands of patrons and witnessed countless stunning sunsets over Green Bay. We are all extremely proud of the accomplishments that have taken place throughout the years, none of which would have been possible without the tireless effort of our professional actors, directors and designers, dedicated seasonal and year-round staff as well as our energetic interns who are learning their craft. Each season they all work diligently to insure your experience is second to none and one to remember. But none of this would be possible without the continued support and generosity of you, our patrons, donors and volunteers. Thank you! It is hard to imagine that our “new” theater is not so new anymore and that this season marks our tenth anniversary in our modern space. As with all of our facilities, time and the elements, if ignored, will take their toll. Your support through contributions to our Annual Fund are crucial to our long-term success and necessary to ensure artistic productions for generations to come. Those before us were faced with challenges and rose to meet them. I am certain that we will face many challenges in the future but will continue to rise to make them opportunities with your unwavering support. It is our mission to continue the heritage and legacy of Peninsula Players Theatre. A visit to the Peninsula Players is more than just a night out at the theater…it is the perfect blend of nature, art and community. It is my sincere hope that your experience this evening will leave you not only satisfied, but that it will encourage you to tell your friends and family to come and experience it for themselves. Help us keep one of Door County’s artistic crown jewels shining for years to come.

Greetings to our 80th Anniversary Friends! This was the Players’ first season 80 years ago: Hay Fever by Noël Coward Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen Criminal At Large by Edgar Wallace The Second Man by S.N. Behrman The Mad Hopes by Romney Brent It was quite a mixture: from a classic like Hedda Gabler, which premiered in Munich, Germany in 1891, to a brand new play like The Mad Hopes, which had its New York première in 1932. In style, the slate of shows ranged from the realistic and sober drama of Hedda Gabler, to the outlandish and high farce of Hay Fever. In between, those audiences also saw the grown-up literate comedy The Second Man, the murder mystery thriller Criminal At Large and the delightfully sprightly comedy The Mad Hopes. The 1935 season was composed of a quintet of shows that had a little bit of something for everyone - thoughtfulness, laughter, suspense, social commentary and excitement. What I’m happiest about is that this is what we continue to do at the Players to this day. And 80 years of audiences continue to be attracted to this kind of slate of shows and to be delighted with this wide variety of entertainment. Clearly the Players’ founders had a good idea. Our 2015 season indeed follows and embraces the tradition which was so elegantly laid out in that first season long ago. We again have quite a mixture: from a classic like Dial M for Murder, which premiered in 1952, to a brand new play like A Real Lulu which has its world première here! In style the slate of shows ranges from the truthful and prickly romance of Outside Mullingar to the door-slamming and operatic farce of Lend Me A Tenor. In between we have the human literate comedy of A Real Lulu, the murder mystery thriller Dial M for Murder and the frolicsome musical nonsense of Nunsense. As in 1935, our 2015 season has something for everyone - thrills, belly laughs, human frailty, romance and music. So here’s to you, our audience! A new season; a new smörgåsbord! The past 80 years of audiences salute you going forward!

Flagstone Staircase Re-opens for Players 80th Season You may have descended this historic flagstone staircase this evening to join the Players. Since 1937 the staircase has been a gateway for generations of theatergoers. At first, patrons descended into an open grassy knoll and they sat on garden chairs where they were enchanted by performances under the stars. The staircase was the original entrance to Camp Wildwood for Boys, which occupied the property prior to 1937 when the Players moved in. The stairs were an iconic, nostalgic and functional element of the Peninsula Players experience. Many were heartbroken when the stairs were unexpectedly lost during the demolition, excavation and construction of the new theater. The upper portion survived but remained roped off, unable to be safely used by patrons until this season. Peninsula Players, with support from the Raibrook Foundation, was able to rebuild a portion of the Players past. We are thrilled, once again, to greet patrons via this magical entryway to the theater-in-agarden for generations to come.

He also wrote the screen adaptations of “Alive” and “Congo.” His original screenplays include “The Waltz of the Tulips,” “Live From Baghdad,” “The January Man,” “Four Dogs and a Bone” and “Five Corners,” which won a Special Jury Prize (screenplay) at the Barcelona Film Festival.

Shanley is the son of an Irish immigrant and was raised in the Irish-Italian working class sector of the Bronx. Shanley has written many plays and screenplays, but it took a trip with his father to the family farm outside the village of Killucan, near the town of Mullingar, before he became interested in writing about his Irish heritage. The strong bonds between his family members left a lasting impact on Shanley. He was influenced by their loyalty to and love for one another. “I wanted to put on stage something I hadn’t seen” Shanley told the Seattle Times. “Sometimes a son and a father, a mother and a daughter, just love each other, without equivocation, without apology.”

His 1987 script for “Moonstruck” won both the Writers Guild Award and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. An Academy Award for Best Actress was also awarded to Cher for her performance in “Moonstruck.” Shanley’s full-length plays include The Big Funk, Beggars in the House of Plenty, Italian-American Reconciliation, Women of

Shanley recalls listening to his relations converse around the kitchen table with vigor, emphasis and conviction in the introduction to his script for Outside Mullingar. “[Aunt] Mary’s declarations came out at the rate of water gushing from a fire house,” he said. It was a gloomy and dark day, yet no lights were on. When Shanley inquired if there was a power failure he “set off a series of denunciations and exhortations about the light switch, which was finally thrown by my cousin Anthony as if he were setting fire to the national treasury or electrocuting the only woman he had ever loved.”

About the Playwright (Continued from page 27) Something clicked for Shanley while listening to the family banter and quibble in their thick brogues. “I was listening to people talk in the kitchen of the family farm my cousin now runs; I got it,” explained Shanley in an interview with the Seattle Times. “I thought, ‘Yes. These are my people.’” Shanley honored some of his Irish relations by naming three of the four fictional characters in Outside Mullingar after his Uncle Tony and cousins Anthony and Rosemary. Outside Mullingar opened on Broadway for a limited run January 3, 2014 and marked the Broadway debut of Debra Messing and also featured Brian F. O’Byrne. Outside Mullingar earned Shanley a Tony nomination for Best Play. To learn more about Outside Mullingar, visit the Players’ donor board near the theater.

Peninsula Players A Theatre in a Garden Take a rustic, woodsy site outfitted with a few little cabins that once served a boys camp along the bay. Add a dream, a barn-like proscenium stagehouse and a hundred or so seats open to the stars above and you have the early days of Peninsula Players. Richard and Caroline Fisher, a young novice brother-and-sister team, started the troupe in 1935 when they produced Noel Coward’s Hay Fever at a site behind the former Bonnie Brook Cottage/Motel in Fish Creek, now the Fish Creek Town Park. By 1937 they realized the ensemble had outgrown the motel site so they purchased the 22-acre Wildwood Boys Camp, the present site of the theater. Now, in its 80th season, it is no longer just a dream: we are America’s oldest Camille, 1941 with Margot Fisher professional and Leo Lucker resident summer theater. In the 80 years Peninsula Players has performed at the Theatre in a Garden, more than 1,000 actors have crossed our boards. Some had their first professional experiences at the Players. Many continued their careers in the arts, either on– or off-stage, and some have even gone onto stardom. Although Peninsula Players began under the stars, a canvas top was draped above the audience in 1944, and in 1957 Caroline’s dream of a permanent roof came true when the open-sided pavilion was built.

Peninsula Players, circa 1937

In 1960, after 25 years of involvement, the Fishers sold the theater at public auction to Kenneth Carroad, a New York City attorney. Jim McKenzie was hired to oversee the Players operations as producer. He and his wife, actress Jeanne Bolan, both associated with the Players since 1947, took on the Fisher legacy. The non-profit organization, Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc., was formed in 1962, to operate the theater, and in 1978 Carroad sold out. McKenzie became owner of the property in 1978 and continued as the company’s producer. Caroline shared to stretch imaginations, provide reason for laughter and tears and furnish cutting edge theater experiences is still the hallmark at Peninsula Players. Safeguarding that dream and this lovely Theatre in a Garden is paramount to the Players Board of Directors which is committed to –

Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc. in 1993. As a member of the Players Board of Directors, McKenzie continued to help preserve and improve the theater’s facilities and environment until his death in 2002. More than a decade ago many improvements were made including actor housing and public restroom facilities, expanded and upgraded rehearsal and storage areas and a computerized box office. The close of the 2005 season brought the beginning of the Players largest improvement – a new stage house and audience pavilion. Through the generous support of many donors, benefactors and volunteers, all intent on continuing the magic of live theater for future generations, the Players built a new facility in the same foot-print of the first theater. Included are up-todate wiring, more space for actors and scenery and a redesigned space to p r o v i d e b e t t e r sightlines for the audience, not to mention new comfy seats. Peninsula Players Internship Program

Theater is one of the few professions where apprentices can learn from those who practice their art. The internship program at Peninsula Players Theatre is part of a tradition which runs as deep as the roots of the theater itself. Since the Players launched its first season in 1935, interns, then called apprentices, have been given the opportunity to work side-by-side with professionals, learning the craft by observing and participating in it. “Working in theater necessitates being well-rounded,” said Business Manager Audra Baakari Boyle. “Having experience in a professional setting helps one to communicate with one’s co-workers. Our internship program is a wonderful opportunity to find out if theater is a career you would like to pursue. The interns at Peninsula Players work with professional actors, managers and technicians for 14 to 20 weeks in all aspects of theater, making us unique among internship programs.” The program’s diversity and atmosphere attracts interns yearly from across the country. Mixing work and responsibilities, interns are offered opportunities to enhance their résumés, try different areas in theater production and make contacts with working actors, designers and managers. Interns participating in our 2015 season came from a variety of academic programs in Ohio, New York, Tennessee, Wisconsin Breakfast, Lunch & and West Virginia.
